Customer Reviews:
An excellent textbook.......2005-03-03
This is the fourth edition of the classic text that appears to be one of the most authoritative and comprehensive on gastrointestinal pathology currently available. The book is written by eight authors who can be regarded as some of the world's most eminent gastrointestinal pathologists.
The overall style of the book remains similar to the previous edition in that conditions affecting the gastrointestinal (GI) system are presented systematically according to anatomical location. The strength of the book lies in the comprehensive nature of the descriptions on the pathogenesis, clinical aspects, macroscopic and microscopic pathology of each disease entity. The information provided
and the references appear to be up to date. The book is most useful for the pathologist who wants to UPDATE his or her knowledge on recent advances on specific conditions, particularly in relation to assessing diagnostic criteria,
description of new disease entities and classification of specific entities. This is NOT an atlas of GI pathology.
In summary, I regard this book as an essential reference on
gastrointestinal pathology and indispensable for both general surgical and specialised gastrointestinal pathologists.
The name of Morson is not sufficient!!!.......2003-12-05
I bought the book counting on the name of Morson. I have disappointed very much after I bought this book. The pictures are not of sufficient quality and besides the book is not sufficient in text too. I came back the book to amazon.com after one day I bought it.
Book Description
In the rowdy red-light district of Storyville, four players of the new music they call "jass" have turned up dead. When Creole detective Valentin St. Cyr begins to investigate, he discovers that every one of the victims once played in the same band, and the only one left alive has gone into hiding.
As he digs deeper, Valentin becomes convinced that a shadowy woman is the key to the mystery. His efforts to find her touch nerves, and soon Tom Anderson, known as the "King of Storyville," police lieutenant J. Picot, and even the mayor of New Orleans want him off the case. It's all the proof Valentin needs that there is something even larger and darker at the heart of this sordid business.
Seductively told, expertly plotted, and terrifically concluded, Jass is the perfect encore to Fulmer's first novel in the Valentin St. Cyr series.

A Compelling Follow-up to Chasing The Devil's Tail.......2007-03-03
New Orleans seems a natural setting for the ever-growing mystery genre. Working my way through James Lee Burke, Robert Skinner, Ace Atkins, James Sallis and others, I discovered David Fulmer. Fulmer's second Valentin St. Cyr novel is as compelling as the first, and for quasi musicians like myself, dusted with enough references to musicians, locales, and songs of the time to add a delightful layer of authenticity to the storyline. Given St. Cyr's background, the reader has no problem with his close friendships with Buddy Bolden (Chasing) or Jelly Roll Morton (Jass). Fulmer adds enough historical detail about the New Orleans of the 1900s, that we can almost imagine what "Storyville" looked like, sounded like, and what the lives of the "fallen angels" WAS like. Likewise, we watch street musicians, whorehouse piano players, and small orchestras create "jazz" right in front of our eyes. Fulmer is able to make his novels near-graphic without lowering them to the level explicity we sometimes see on TV. St. Cyr is a dangerous man in a dangerous "district" who knows how to handle himself, yet, like most of us, he has self doubts and and fears which make him human.
I GREATLY look forward to reading Rampart Street.
My only complaint with Jass is a slight loss of verisimilitude: I'm not sure that police cars (there weren't many CARS at the time) had "sirens" and Gibson (guitars)didn't introduce the Kalamazoo line (as played by Jeff Mumford) until the late 1920s/early 1930s.
Excellent.......2006-03-17
I ran across the first of David Fulmer's Valentin St. Cyr novels, Chasing the Devil's Tail, a year or so ago when it was just out in paperback. I bought it on a whim, and enjoyed the mix of atmosphere, history, Jazz, and New Orleans a hundred years ago enough that when a second book appeared, I immediately picked it up. I wasn't disappointed with the story: it's the sort of book that you'll think about for a good long while.
Valentin is still living in his relatively luxurious apartment on Magazine Street, still working security for Mr. Anderson, who runs Storyville, and still living with Justine, the girl he rescued in Devil's Tail. As this book opens, an old friend calls for him, demanding that he investigate the killings of several jazz musicians in New Orleans.
St. Cyr's friend turns out to be the renowned Jelly Roll Morton, a friend through St. Cyr's childhood friendship with King Bolden, the originator of Jazz and a character in the first book. Morton has suspicions that the musicians who've been killed have been playing in tony New Orleans, and that someone is opposed to them luring young whites into the dance halls they play. St. Cyr is originally skeptical, but when a bass-player-turned-preacher turns up dead, St. Cyr realises there's a much more sinister thread through all of this: the men were all members of a particular band some years before. It seems someone's after these particular jazz players, not all of them in general.
Fulmer seems very knowledgeable about the early roots of his sub-text, the music that was called "jass" at the time, which morphed into "jazz" later. His portrait of New Orleans at the turn of the last century rings true, his characters are interesting and well-rounded, and the whole story hangs together rather well. I enjoyed this book thoroughly, and look forward to Rampart Street, the next entry in the series.
Great noir mystery!.......2006-02-24
David Fulmer won the Shamus award for the first book in the St. Cyr series, Chasing the Devil's Tail. Rampart Street, the third in the series was released January 2006.
Set in the Storyville (red light) district of New Orleans in the 1900s, in the early days of jazz, Jass re-creates that fabled time like old photographs coming to life. The street names--Marais, Villere, Iberville, Bienville, Bourbon, Basin, Chartres.... the language and dialects alone evoke a New Orleans more real in the memories than in actuality.
The characters include historical people like musician Jelly Roll Morton and cafee and bar owner Tom Anderson. Anderson has hired Valentin St. Cyr, a Creole ex-policeman, and set him up in an apartment. St. Cyr is a bouncer in his establishment, and also watches over some of the bordellos.
Anderson is called the "King of Storyville," as he seems to control a great deal of the district. At the start of the story, Jelly Roll calls St. Cyr in to tell him of several suspicious deaths of jass musicians. Eventually three die (an overdose, a stabbing, and a poisoning) before St. Cyr gets involved. Then another who has given up music is drowned. It turns out they had all played in the Union Hall Band.
St. Cyr is distracted by girlfriend Justine's boredom, continuing headaches, and her eventual defection back to the "sporting" life (she becomes the mistress of a wealthy man). Pressure is put on St. Cyr to stop investigating by his boss Anderson, who has the perfect control: he can reveal some damming information about Justine.
St. Cyr's long-time adversary on the police, Lt. Picot, is back and seems to know more than he should about these murders. The landlady of the stabbed musician is killed, as is Dominique, the young girlfriend of one, who had come to St. Cyr for safety. He is first thrown in to a dark depression (he finds Dominique's body), but soon is energized by his cold rage, and uncovers the sordid truth.

Armchair Interviews says: Fulmer's excellent research has contributed to the steamy atmosphere of this great noir mystery.
Welcome to New Orleans.......2005-05-23
Fulmer has a wonderful style and ability to convey the feeling of New Orleans. St. Cyr is a wonderful character about whom we learn more in this book. There was a twist at the end I didn't see coming and a thread left to be resolved. This is a great series and I am looking forward to his next book.
Lushly Atmospheric.......2005-01-28
This is a good one. The story structure is a little clunky and the shocking revelation at the end isn't very, but the writing is excellent, the characters are compelling and, best of all, the author creates the historical period, New Orleans in 1908, vividly and convincingly. You can smell the air, taste the chicory coffee and hear the thumping beat of the jass. This is the 2nd book in what I hope will be a longer series.

Book Description
Differences in the diagnostic criteria for early cancer of the gastrointestinal tract between Japan and Western countries have been an interesting issue for some time, physicians in Japan being much more inclined to give a diagnosis of cancer than their European and North American counterparts. This book addresses those differences by contrasting the views of Eastern and Western endoscopists and pathologists on 24 cases presented in Part I. The following sections examine and discuss the Vienna consensus criteria, early cancer in Barrett’s esophagus, early detection of cancers, endoscopic treatments, the natural course of early cancer, and diagnostic methods and treatments for early cancer. These all deal with esophagus, stomach, and colorectal cancers. This book will be an indispensable and unique resource for all pathologists, endoscopists, and surgeons who are involved in managing gastrointestinal cancer.

Book Description
Pathology is not merely a static body of knowledge but a dynamic and evolving discipline interfacing with science, medicine and society. The growing trend towards integrated and self-directed learning on the one hand, and the commercialization of medical practice on the other, has resulted in a progressive loss of connection between teaching and the practice of pathology. Based on the specific discipline of anatomical pathology (histopathology) this text realigns education with modern, evidence-based practice and guides medical and health science students toward an understanding of pathology. The unfolding of key ideas is placed in historical context and emphasis focuses on the mechanisms underlying disease processes and the principles of tissue diagnosis.

Outstanding History and Intro to Concepts for Med Students.......2002-05-17
I checked out this book from the library to prepare for my first path exam -- I found it both comprehensive and very basic -- you don't find that much in medical texts anymore. The point is, Jass gives you the history and tools to understand why we think about disease the way we do, and how to recognize the body's standard reactions to disease. As a bonus, he includes a detailed storyline of discovery, in pathology as well as anatomy, microbiology, and immunology. I highly recommend it!

Book Description
This second edition of the highly successful WHO histological classification of intestinal tumours is the result of an international collaborative effort by pathologists from nine countries. Revision was undertaken where necessary to reflect important changes that have occurred since the first edition in 1976. A bridge between the purely morphological and the immunological classification of the lymphomas is given. The approach to endocrine tumours, based on a combination of routine stains and immunohistochemical methods, supplants the former criteria based on silver stains. Considerable attention is given to the dysplasias, whose relevance in diagnostic pathology has increased with the advent of endoscopy. Several new entities have been added, and the precision of the proven sections has been enhanced. These changes update the classification, which will continue to facilitate data comparison by providing a standardized, international terminology.

The authors lead you through a detailed description of all major waters in Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. Content includes timing of seasonal trout, bass, and salmon runs, suggested flies, site-specific maps and area hatch charts. Finally, what Northeast anglers have been waiting for, a comprehensive guide to flyfishing opportunities in the great northeast.

Spare the Rod ý NEGLECT the child........2000-11-14
No home movies, no photo albums, no old songs warm myheart more than traveling through New England to some of the very places described in this book. That's where my memories lie. That's where my father took me, and his father before that.
And while I have moved away, there are two great reminders of a childhood that I can only describe as ecstatic. A picture on my wall of E.B. White. And Hickoff & Plumley's book about the best places to fish. Some I've been to. Some I was taken to by these authors.
For those of you who are not as nostaglic and wistful about New England, let me with all honesty say that this book will serve as a superb and practical guidebook. And for those who have a little something more connected to the region, this book is a blueprint for irreplacable memories.
And damned good fishing spots and tips.
Fly Fishing in Northern New England.......2000-08-09
I had the pleasure of attending a seminar by Steve Hickoff last winter. I bought this book from him at the seminar, and have used it a lot more than I ever thought I would. My family and I were on vacation at Sebago Lake in Maine recently, and the information in the book on Sebago Lake, the Crooked River, and the Presumpscott River was invaluable. The maps of the Crooked and Presumpscott rivers especially allowed me to get up early, get to a good fishing spot, and even catch a couple of fish (all before the rest of the family even knew I had gone fishing). I really like the Crooked River, it has become one of my favorites. As an earlier reviewer stated, this book gives you the information to get to the good spots, without wasting a lot of time driving around. The book also provided information on what sections of the rivers were fly fishing only, and the local regulations for taking trout and salmon. I would highly recommend this book for anyone who plans on doing any fly fishing in Maine, NH, and Vermont.
ONE OF THE FINEST BOOKS, I'VE EVER READ!!!!.......1999-04-19
FROM THE MOUNTAINS OF VERMONT TO THE ALLAGASH IN MAINE TO SEACOAST OF NEW HAMPSHIRE. HICKOFF AND PLUMNEY KNOW WERE IT'S AT. FROM THEORY TO FLIES TO PRACTICAL INFO. THEY NOT ONLY TALK THE TALK, THEY WALK THE WALK. I WOULD RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO ANY FLY FISHERMAN RATHER A BEGINNER OR A EXPERT. TIGHT LINES, STEVE, KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK.
tells you what you need to know.......1999-04-18
I travel around New England regularly and usually have a fly rod in my car. It is always frustrating when I have a couple of hours of free time and I spend it trying to figure out where to fish instead of spending it fishing. This book has all you need to know to find a spot and catch (and hopefully release) some fish. Unlike some books the authors don't limit themselves to only one kind of fish or claim that every spot they talk about is going to rival the best place you've ever fished. Highly recommended for anyone who gets the privilege of fishing in New England!

Adventures in the Northern Wilderness.......2000-03-25
Adventures in the Northern Wilderness is a great book with many good adventures. My favorite is the most royal conspiracy which has a very large battle where even the most experienced characters have a good chance of losing. The only problem i have is that a second edition version has not been made yet
Good but outdated........1998-05-04
This book has some good info about Wolfen and the Northern Wilderness, however it is not up to date with the 2nd edition of the PFRPG. It also has several creative adventures; however they would not be good for a low-power party.
Book Description
There are few places on the planet that still offer true wilderness paddling. Northern Saskatchewan is one of them. Wilderness adventurer Laurel Archer takes us on 15 trips down 15 rivers: the well traveled and the less traveled. With detailed route descriptions, maps, sage advice on rapids, hazards, campsites, and special attractions, as well as notes on the recreational, historical, and wilderness value of each river.

Don't go without it.......2006-05-15
I took last summer off to float some rivers in Canada. This book is excellent both for deciding which of the rivers of Northern Saskatchewan to float and for use during your trip. It is exceptionally well organized and detailed. Ms. Archer will not steer you wrong and the book is full of helpful advice that comes from a person who has obviously done a multitude of river trips and who has an exceptional level of wilderness wisdom and skill.
The book you need.......2005-08-20
If you plan on going canoeing in N. Sask. this is the book you need. Almost every major river in this area is profiled with history, character of river, detailed map with UTM coordinates of important sites. Also includes info. on the type of fish in each river - important for the anglers. I have used it on several occasions when paddling in this beautiful area of N. Sask. The appendix includes important outfitter contacts and websites to check water levels.

A classic.......2003-04-03
I love this book and reread it every couple of years. It has always been my dream to live in the wilderness for a year, as this honeymooning couple did.
It is well and simply written, with a few maps but only disappointingly blurry pictures. There's lots of great description, including the occasional tedium of holing up for the winter, the joys they had exploring the area once spring arrived, and the terror of dealing with wolves (or was it bears?) trying to break into their cabin.
They are candid about what they did wrong and how they dealt with spending so much uninterrupted time together.

The author discusses the importance of choosing compatible companions, the use of guides and outfitters, how to reduce your impact on fragile areas and what to do in case of a wilderness emergency. He gives information on available services, resources available to recreational travellers, weather, regulations, suitable clothing, equipment and food, health concerns and animal hazards.
Product Description
"Northern Lights" by Ron Nicolas narrates the adventures of a 19-year-old in the wilderness of northern Manitoba. The adventures range from near-drowning to encounters with timber wolves and a hunt for a wolverine and the legendary Witigo. This story is presented as fiction, however, it is based on factual events with most of the characters and places representing real people and places. This is a great pictorial book. The description of the scenes are amazingly vivid and the author has the ability to transport the reader to the great outdoors. Using an elegant vocabulary and absolutely impeccable style, this book is a great piece of literary work to be read by high school teens and English majors. It teaches a style of glamorous and well written English.
