Jeffrey Deaver knows how to hook readers and keep them guessing with suspenseful, twisty plots. This early Deaver effort, originally published in 1988, will not disappoint fans dazzled by his subsequent, high-profile Lincoln Rhyme series (The Bone Collector, The Coffin Dancer, The Empty Chair.)
Manhattan Is My Beat takes its name from the (invented) 1947 film noir watched obsessively by murder victim Robert Kelly. Our heroine, Rune, (a punk with a heart of gold) works for Washington Square Video. On a routine pickup to retrieve Manhattan Is My Beat, she discovers Kelly just shot dead, the target of a professional hit. Rune and a woman jogger glimpse the presumed killer as he speeds off in a green car. While cops drag their heels in solving the mystery, Rune takes matters into her own hands, convinced that the motive for the murder is a missing suitcase stuffed with one million dollars--the subject, not coincidentally, of the film that Kelly and Rune both admired. An avid fan of fantasy novels and prone to see life through the prism of magic and quests, Rune takes up the challenge of finding the lost money and catching Kelly's killers. But the formidable hit team is intent upon destroying both possible witnesses to the murder, and their nimble crosses and double-crosses--some of which the reader sees, some of which are revealed at the end--make for fun reading.
Plotting moves briskly in this novel, except for a slowdown in the story--Rune's ambiguous romance with downtown poseur Richard has little to do with catching killers. The conclusion, while neatly wrapped, is marred by the sudden appearance of a crucial detail that Deaver produces like a fancy dish under the waiter's silver dome. But the gimmick to offset the conclusion's predictability feels like a cheat rather than a revelation. All in all, however, the novel is excellent mind candy, a thrilling romp lead by an agile, street-smart heroine. --Kathi Inman Berens
Book Description
Five feet two inches of slick repartee, near-purple hair, and poetic imagination, twenty-year-old Rune hasn't been in Manhattan for very long. But she's crafty enough to have found a squatter's paradise in an empty TriBeCa loft, and a video store job that feeds her passion for old movies. It's a passion she shares with her favorite customer, Mr. Kelly, a lonely old man who rents the same video over and over. The flick is a noir classic based on a real-life unsolved bank heist and a million missing dollars. It's called
Manhattan Is My Beat.
That's the tape Rune is picking up from Mr. Kelly's shabby apartment when she finds him shot to death. The police suspect a robbery gone wrong, but Rune is certain the key to solving the murder is hidden somewhere in the hazy, black-and-white frames of Mr. Kelly's beloved movie. But as Rune hits the mean streets of New York to find answers, she gets caught up in a dangerous adventure more chilling than anything Hollywood could dream up. As her story draws to its terrifying conclusion, Rune's final close-up may include the killer of a co-star.

A lot of fun.......2007-09-21
We see the roots of Deaver's work in this early effort from him featuring Rune (later to be seen in "Death of a Blue Movie Star" and "Hard News"). While not perfect - I personally didn't see the point to the whole Richard sub-plot - it's overall a satisfying mystery with enough twists to keep you guessing until the end - all three of them.
Rune is a young woman who has come to New York from Ohio and is squatting in a gazebo while the building is being renovated around her. She works for a video store and one day while out to pick up a video from a customer, she discovers the customer has just been murdered. She had been friends with the customer - Robert Kelly - and they had shared a love of movies; she decides that the murder has something to do with Mr. Kelly's favorite movie - "Manhattan is My Beat," which was based upon a true story about a bank robbery. She decides that Mr. Kelly had found the money from the robbery (which had never been recovered) and therefore had been killed for it. So she sets out to solve his murder herself, and to find the money.
There isn't much else of the plot that can be outlined without spoiling the plot for those who haven't yet read it. Suffice it to say that those who are fans of Deaver, those who enjoy mysteries and thrillers - they should enjoy this book. Just keep in mind it is an early effort and Deaver hadn't quite shaken all the knots out of his style yet. That said, I enjoyed it a great deal. Recommend from me!
Deaver Makes You See the World.......2007-07-16
Jeffrey Deaver is often called the master of ticking time bomb suspense. While it is true of most of his works, the Rune books, starting with Manhattan is my beat lacks the ticking time bomb, but instead immerses the reader into the world seen through the vivid imagination of a young woman who sees things through fairy-tale glasses.
Rune is an almost perfect portrait of an ENFP, who vividly lives in a world half real and half of possibilities, which would both attract me to her... though she'd drive me crazy at the same time. In this book, her quest is one half of justice for a kindly old man who kept renting the same videotape over and over again, and half on a quest for a mythical treasure of great worth. However, when the worlds of her fantasy and the worlds of reality crash, the result is a strange mixture of the two world that only a person like Rune could survive.
EXCITING! MIND-GRABBER!.......2006-02-19
This work by JD is really fast-paced and intricate at the same time! a page-turner if you ever saw one! if you're a native of NYC as I am, you'll like the way he describes the Village and Downtown Manhattan! really accurate; the story is fast-paced; Rune is kind of ditzy but determined to get what she wants regardless of the consequences. If you want to pass sometime and have some fun-reading, this is the book for you!
The Colorful World of Rune.......2005-06-10
Although not as highly publicized as his Lincoln Rhyme series, Jeffrey Deaver still delivers a suspense filled, highly entertaining book with MANHATTAN IS MY BEAT.
A whole review could be dedicated to Rune, the main character in this epic. She's punk, she lives in an abandoned apartment on a rooftop, and she doesn't care what anyone thinks of her. The reader is enraptured by her antics and I wished I could have such a carefree attitude, or at least know someone like her. The term colorful doesn't do her justice!
Rune works for Washington Square Video owned by an overbearing jerk. When customer Robert Kelly has a late movie that needs to be picked up, Rune is given the assignment. This simple task is muddied when Rune discovers Kelly's body, an obvious case of murder. As she exits his apartment, she and a jogger see a green car speed away that she guesses is the murderer. The police don't move fast enough, so Rune decides to investigate on her own. She's sure Robert Kelly's murder is somehow tied to the movie he constantly rented, "Manhattan is My Beat". As she plugs along looking for clues, the hit men are intent upon eliminating Rune and the jogger who witnessed the car.
Thrown into Rune's world is Richard, her boyfriend who is anything but what the reader expects. Rune is unpretentious to Richard's rigidity. It was almost as if Deaver had to put Rune in a relationship with a businessman so she wasn't so bizarre she would offend some readers. I would much rather have enjoyed Rune on her own and not have her fenced in by Richard. But then again, Richard only has a minor role, so he could easily be overlooked.
Some of the scenes are very predictable but Deaver always has a few that catch the reader by surprise. This mix, along with Rune's antics, make for a story that will have you not only trying to catch the killers with Rune, but also wanting to befriend her and just hang out. I laughed so hard at times that I had to stop reading and wipe the tears out of my eyes. Seldom does a character touch the reader like Rune, and when that happens, it's definitely a fun read.
MANHATTAN IS MY BEAT is a fast paced book that will capture you from the beginning. Not as mentally challenging as figuring out the villains in the Lincoln Rhyme series, it will leave you smiling and is a few hours well spent.
First effot by a stand out author.......2002-12-17
Deavers wrote this book under the name of William Jefferies. He also wrote another series under this name featuring a film scout. This character is a young punkish girl named Rune who is trying to get through her 20's and survive NYC. She is currently working at a video store and when a regular dies under suspicious
circumstances she becomes interested in the movie he rented numerous times. She becomes obsessed with plot of the movie as it is based loosely on a true crime. She thinks she can solve the case find the money and live happily ever after. This plot is hard to follow at times and sometimes I don't think the author is aware of what he wants the characters to do. I have read his later books and know he can write a good thriller. Too bad this book falls flat, I believe his publisher re-released to capitalize on his famous status. I will read more of the scout series and might try the next one in this series just because Rune is such a likable character.

Dead beat.......2007-06-04
The style of Deaver's "Manhattan" is not overly different to those of his peak phase (for mine, Maidens Grave - Coffin Dancer) in that it is simply written and developed, and with twists. However the twists themselves were anti-climactic (i read the whole book for that? come on), the attempted metaphors of New York as a fairyland and the connections to movies were lost on me, and the characters did not attract. I think I'll leave my Deaver collection to rest for awhile, 2.5 stars.
A BRASH AND BREEZY, PAGE TURNING READ..........2005-07-30
This is one of the author's earlier works, and while it is not one of his best efforts, it is still a cut above what is currently proffered by other writers of this genre. Jeffrey Deaver writes with a decidedly contemporary feel, his prose always spare and lean. While he does not dwell unduly on character development, it does not deter from the book, as it is wholly plot driven, with enough twists and turns to keep the reader guessing until the last minute. It makes for a quick, enjoyable read.
The book revolves around a decades old bank robbery in which the million dollars heisted was never recovered. This robbery was memorialized in an old bete noire film entitled "Manhattan is My Beat". Enter the story's unlikely heroine, twenty year old Rune of the purple hair, who works in a video store, squats in an abandoned loft that she calls home, and has an imagination that doesn't quit.
When one of her video customers is killed execution style in his apartment, Rune is drawn into events of the past, as they converge upon the present. The now dead customer had repeatedly rented the film, "Manhattan is My Beat", and Rune firmly believes that there is a connection between his death and the age old bank heist. Her do-or-die resolve to discover why her customer was killed leads the moxie endowed Rune on a merry and dangerous chase. It is one that keeps the reader fully engaged and entertained.
Book Description
Mornings on Horseback is the brilliant biography of the young Theodore Roosevelt. Hailed as "a masterpiece" (John A. Gable, Newsday), it is the winner of the Los Angeles Times 1981 Book Prize for Biography and the National Book Award for Biography. Written by David McCullough, the author of Truman, this is the story of a remarkable little boy, seriously handicapped by recurrent and almost fatal asthma attacks, and his struggle to manhood: an amazing metamorphosis seen in the context of the very uncommon household in which he was raised.
The father is the first Theodore Roosevelt, a figure of unbounded energy, enormously attractive and selfless, a god in the eyes of his small, frail namesake. The mother, Mittie Bulloch Roosevelt, is a Southerner and a celebrated beauty, but also considerably more, which the book makes clear as never before. There are sisters Anna and Corinne, brother Elliott (who becomes the father of Eleanor Roosevelt), and the lovely, tragic Alice Lee, TR's first love. All are brought to life to make "a beautifully told story, filled with fresh detail", wrote The New York Times Book Review.
A book to be read on many levels, it is at once an enthralling story, a brilliant social history and a work of important scholarship which does away with several old myths and breaks entirely new ground. It is a book about life intensely lived, about family love and loyalty, about grief and courage, about "blessed" mornings on horseback beneath the wide blue skies of the Badlands.
Customer Reviews:
American Aristocrat.......2007-09-11
I commend the author for forging a career as a non-academic historian. Few of our tenured scholars write this well, few could get tenure in this day and age expressing affection and admiration for this great republican President and his family of Dutch aristocrats. McCullough is thorough and critical, but never hesitates to show his warm-hearted respect for this extraordinary man who devoted his life to conservation and social advocacy, two fields of life-endeavor totally abandoned by the modern Republicans. Founder of both the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Natural History Museum, TD was the product of that strange era in American life when the rich identified with America but were not duped into celebrating mediocrity and such popular institutions as the public schools. TD was tutored at home and kept away from the "coarsening" influences of the general public. He then set about to enrich the masses by supporting great institutions. Interesting, TD's arch-rival, John D. Rockefeller, dedicated his life to the same goals. In the 19th century, the rich held the public in contempt for their "commonness" but also felt obliged to "give." This is a charming study of this most charmed family.
TR Fan.......2007-09-06
Excellent, well written book! One of the better biography's of the late, great TR. A must read for all TR fan's.
Bully for This Book!.......2007-09-01
This has to be one of the best biographies I have ever read. David Mccullough's storytelling draws you in, and gives you an intimate look at Teddy's pre-presidential days. The only negative is that it isn't long enough!
How the last "renaissance man" president was created.......2007-07-15
I'll admit up front that I believe Teddy Roosevelt is my favorite president and certainly one of our greatest. He was probably one of the last "renaissance men" of our time; a successful politician, reformer, war hero, historian, naturalist, and rancher (ok, not too successful as a rancher).
But the beauty of Mornings On Horseback is that it adds another dimension to Roosevelt. Unlike many other books on the man, which focus on his accomplishments as a politician and leader, McCullough has used diaries and letters to paint a picture of the family side of TR. Not just a more developed picture of TR himself, but also of his family and the impact of their relationships on each other and on the future president himself.
If you're looking for a book about TR's accomplishments, this is not the book. However, if you're looking for a book that provides insights into how the great man was created Mornings on Horseback fills that need. McCullough notes that he ended his story after TR came back from the "badlands" and ran for mayor of New York. Although the TR story goes beyond that time, the author feels that the essential TR had been created by then, and McCullough's focus is on that story.
Typical McCollough Masterpiece.......2007-06-15
With completion of this biography, I've read all of McCollough's works and am somewhat saddened that there are no more to enjoy. He is quite simply the greatest biographer I've ever read.
In this work, McCollough explores the formative years of Theodore Roosevelt, perhaps the most American U.S. President in our nation's history. In doing so, he tries to identify the upbringing and experiences that resulted in this fascinating individual. As always, McCollough's writing is riveting, his research is rigorous and his analysis is flawless. Typical McCollough. Enjoy.
Book Description
FROM THE #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF JOHN ADAMS
Winner of the 1982 National Book Award for Biography, Mornings on Horseback is the brilliant biography of the young Theodore Roosevelt. Hailed as a masterpiece by Newsday, it is the story of a remarkable little boy -- seriously handicapped by recurrent and nearly fatal attacks of asthma -- and his struggle to manhood.
His father -- the first Theodore Roosevelt, "Greatheart," -- is a figure of unbounded energy, enormously attractive and selfless, a god in the eyes of his small, frail namesake. His mother -- Mittie Bulloch Roosevelt -- is a Southerner and celebrated beauty.
Mornings on Horseback spans seventeen years -- from 1869 when little "Teedie" is ten, to 1886 when he returns from the West a "real life cowboy" to pick up the pieces of a shattered life and begin anew, a grown man, whole in body and spirit.
This is a tale about family love and family loyalty...about courtship, childbirth and death, fathers and sons...about gutter politics and the tumultuous Republican Convention of 1884...about grizzly bears, grief and courage, and "blessed" mornings on horseback at Oyster Bay or beneath the limitless skies of the Badlands.

Expecting more..........2007-05-14
I was really expecting more TR info in this book... a little more than I needed to know about his family and acquaintances and not enough about the man himself.
Excellent writing about Theodore R. and his family.......2007-04-03
David McCullough's writing is superb. I have to admit I liked Thedore Roosevelt better as a person in Theodore Rex. His personal correspondence in this book reveals too much about his apparent enjoyment in killing animals for my taste. IMO his image as a conservationist is tarnished by the joy he took in killing. I was especially offended by his shooting the neighbor's dog when riding his horse. If I had lived back then and he shot my dog, I can safely say it would have been the last dog he ever shot and his departure from life would have been made slow and painful...
But that dislike of his joy of killing aside, he and his family were extraordinary. One cannot change history, so I go with the flow to learn more about it and the people in it...
Review on Mornings on Horseback.......2007-03-25
This book is an excellent history material. For those who are studying or are just interested in American history, this a great secondary source that brings Theodore Roosevelt, Jr. to life. The style Mr. David McCullough uses is very easy to understand, and it is also very descriptive in nature which makes readers feel they were present at the scene. The only weakness is that the book limits T.R.'s life to a 19 year period, which happens before his greatest achievements. Basically, the author leaves you wanting more...
Great choice of biography, great author, and accessable price!
F.C, GA
Excellent Audio Version.......2007-01-08
The two readers for this meticulously researched biography of Theodore Roosevelt add appeal, especially when reading the parts with the southern lady or Irish accents. Well done!

She ruled Egpyt not as Queen but as Pharaoh, 35 centuries ago. Yet her name-Hatshepsut-does not appear in dynastic scrolls, nor is her reign celebrated on monuments. This is the story of the young woman who assumed the throne of Egypt, mastered the arts of war and government, lived her life by her own design, and ruled an empire-the only woman Pharaoh in history.
"A rich pageant."-Wall Street Journal
Customer Reviews:
Excellent true biographical re-creation from an ancient time.......2007-03-24
Gedge writes the most atmospheric, beautiful books on ancient Egypt. You feel as if you are there. She paints the picture of the time, place, and people whether peasants or kings believably. This book is a recreation of one of the most unlikely real people of history: the Pharaoh Hatshepsut, a woman Pharaoh, who ruled for 22 peaceful, prosperous years.
Rivitting Reads.......2006-11-20
A very good read well written and a good story.I would recomend it.
Difficult read........2005-03-22
Pauline Gedge is an incredible author and I have read many of her other books however I found "Child of the Morning" a slow and difficult read. Sure, there were spots in the book where there were moments of excitement and intrigue but they ended without resolve and I became frustrated at the end when there was no real answer to the burning questions of why.
Superb historical fiction!.......2005-01-06
Absolutely loved this. Child of the Morning was the first Pauline Gedge book I read, and I can also highly recommend her other ancient Egyptian fiction. The history is accurate and the novels have all been page-turning reads. For far too long, Nefertiti has always gotten the limelight and it's high time that Hatsepshut has been written about, and Pauline Gedge covered her life superbly.
As Compared to Her Other Works.......2004-05-12
Pauline Gedge is perhaps my favorite author because of her ability to write so well about a time in history veiled in mystery. I have read 4 of her books about Egypt, and I have to say that this is the least well written. As always, she does an exceptional job of describing the scenery and very atmosphere of ancient Egypt, but her fault lies with her characters. Every relationship held by Hatshepset seems shallow, especially that with her true love, Senmut. I felt that the book shouldn't have ended because of the lack of development. A must read, anyway.

Customer Reviews:
Really funny.......2007-08-31
This was a fun book to read. No beauty queen with a gorgeous figure here. Just regular folks with everyday problems. Yes the main character does go one quite a bit about her husband and son-in-law leaving them ill provided for. And perhaps she does obsess about her writer's block, but it is still a funny book. A nice change from the run of the mill mushy Christian romance novel.
Fun stuff.......2005-04-18
The Morning Shade Mysteries are a chick-lit version of the Mitford series. While billed as mysteries, they're really slice-of-life books with a light, no-harm-done mystery woven through it all. Maude, who's first person narrative marks every other chapter, is a wonderful, realistic woman stuggling with money, her mother in law, and faith. Despite being in a completely different period of life, I really identified with Maude like I haven't with the too-sweet heroines of Christian romance. If you prefer plot-driven books then pass this by, it's not what you're looking for. However if you're in the mood for a light character-driven book that will cause you to laugh, sympathize, and cause you to think about your own daily existance, then pick up this book. You'll like it!
Whiny Women!.......2004-06-02
In the guise of being "folksy", this book presents some of the whiniest women in literature. They spend an awful lot of time complaining about their not very interesting lives and how the men didn't take care of them. They act like they live in the 1950's and the poor women have to work to earn money. The writing style is actually rather good, the story is just boring and annoying.
Read the "Elm Creek Quilts" series if you want a good cozy read.

Through the lilting verse of Newbery Medalist Cynthia Rylant and illustrations beautifully crafted by best-selling artist Jane Dyer, the energy and exhilaration that sweetens every instance of toddlerhood will be relived again and again.

Great for reading aloud.......2005-12-10
I was given this book as a gift for my newborn son. We have read all the poems aloud many times, and I easily (without knowing I was doing it) memorized "Sleepy-boy" and it is now part of our bedtime ritual every night. These poems read alound well and describe all sorts of things your baby/toddler will know about, from getting up in the morning to going to bed at night. These are a great companion.
A favorite at our house.......2002-11-19
Very soon after receiving this book for Christmas, our two-year-old son had memorized it. (The best compliment a kid can give a book!) He asks us to read it to him almost every night, but we've never had to read -- he recites the poems to us, word for word. Jane Dyer's illustrations bring to life the characters in Cynthia Rylant's poems, making the children in the book as real to our son as his friends in the neighborhood.

Required Reading for Fathers-To-Be.......2002-03-06
There are plenty of books that tell you what to do when a baby comes, but this is the only that I found that gave me an idea of what I could expect to feel like as a new father. As a husband, as a father, as a person inhabiting the planet, Bob Greene very simply describes how his life and outlook are changing during the first year of his daughter's life. He is surprised by what he can and can't do, remarks how his wife's focus has changed. As a reporter, he is surprised to find how his view of the world is different now that he has a small life in his charge.
Some of it is very funny: the helplessness he feels when his daughter first arrives home and how woefully unprepared they are (versus what they thought the instant before). Other parts of it are coldly chilling: Bob Greene's feelings about the mysterious Tylenol Killer anonymously killing people in the Chicagoland area mirrored my own concerns when I heard about the shootings at Columbine High School. Fatherly concern can only go so far and what happens when it's not enough?
My son is almost three years old now and my memories of the first year of his life are melting together into some generic feelings and a handful of anecdotes. However, I have a journal of my son's first year to look back on. That was the most wonderful thing about this book. Bob Greene is a professional writer, but this book made me feel like I could do something similar for my son and - surprisingly - it wasn't all that hard to jot down a little bit here and there as time permitted.
I like to think Bob Greene looks back at this book the same way I look back at my journal.
A terrific book for parents-to-be!.......1998-12-31
My wife and I read this book when we were expecting our first child. It was easy to read and very entertaining. It actually inspired me to write my own diary of our son's first year. I highly recommend it!
Great book for expectant parents!.......1998-06-02
This book is terrific! My husband and I read it before we had our first child. Bob Greene got us super excited about the baby's birth! We tried to read it slowly, so we wouldn't finish much before we had out child. We give this book to all of our friends who are expecting a baby and they agree it's a must-read!

Sweet Anglund Poetry.......2007-05-26
Poems are short and well written, 31 in all. Dedicated to the Kennedy children.
Example poem:
A little train
rides through the grass
upon a silver rail.
It's just an engine
and caboose.
The trainman's name
is "snail."
Works Well for Lulling Babies to Sleep.......2004-03-20
We have used our copy of this book to lull our son to sleep since he was born. The poetry is very lilting and it has different poems to go with each season. Our son loves to hear the patterns of the words and at 20 months he still requests the book. It's not just for older children to enjoy!
Also, on my childhood copy, there is a dedication from the author to all of Robert F. Kennedy's children. I found that very touching, given that it was published a year after his murder.
Childhood Joy and Innocence at Their Best.......2001-06-11
I still own my childhood copy (1st edition) of this wonderful collection of Joan Walsh Anglund's poetry for children. The poems are simple and to-the-point, but coupled with Anglund's unforgettable illustrations, each becomes a classic! I've always enjoyed entering the author's world of childhood innocence and beauty. It's a shame this and a lot of her books are no longer in print, or are difficult to find. If you are able to secure a copy, DO! It will be worth your while.
