Book Description

Sandy Kinsolving's once-glittering life hangs by a threat; his future depends on his wife's inheritance and whether or not she's about to throw him out on his ear. What he wouldn't give for a solution to his money and marriage problems.

If this were an Alfred Hitchcock movie, the solution would be obvious. Enter a stranger with wife problems of his own, who offers a violent -- and mutually advantageous - proposal.

Them in the time it takes to whisper a word, Kinsolving's normal life ends. What radiates like a mirage before him is wealth, security, and freedom. But lurking in the shadows are a brutal murder he cannot prevent, and a madman who stalks his every waking moment.

5 out of 5 stars A real thriller.......2007-09-05

I have read a lot of Wood's books, and I found this very entertaining. It moved real fast, and had suspense, and a few twists. I think it was one of my favorite of his. Sure it was a retread of the Hitchock movie, but that was the whole point. Wood's is always a fun read.

5 out of 5 stars Imperfect Strangers.......2005-03-26

What a great book, could hardly put it down with the catchy plot , but at 2;00 AM just had to give it up so I could get a couple of hours sleep before work!

5 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable - quality but still easy, fun reading.......2004-08-27

Picture yourself in the aftermath of a moment in which, after feeling frustrated to the point of believing your life to be doomed after someone plans to screw you over, you give in to a nasty temptation seeking revenge, but just as you realize how stupid you've been, you are suddenly in too deep to escape. That is what happens throughout this book and it makes for an interesting read.

I think this is a great Stuart Woods book and understand why it was nominated for an award.
The fundamental plot is disturbing, but perhaps more disturbing is the lack of moral awareness (at least much of the time) of the two main characters in the book (Sandy and Peter) - Sandy thankfully decides not to proceed with the plot until he is essentially blackmailed into fulfilling his end of the bargain, but Peter goes from being merely a suspicious character to outright diabolical. I think the book is interesting because it features a flawed hero dealing with an array of nasty problems created in part by his wife but also by his own actions which inevitably come back to haunt him. You never really "like" Sandy 100%, or even 80%, but you perhaps become sympathetic to his desire to escape from this situation.
Woods' writing and imagination in this book are very good, better than in some recent novels (see Reckless Abandon). I enjoy this book a lot and would recommend it to anyone heading to the beach.

3 out of 5 stars Nice Book but Two Glaring Errors.......2004-04-13

I enjoyed this book, having found and bought it on sale at a local bookstore. The concept begins simply enough - two men meet on a trans-Atlantic plane flight, both of them are in unhappy marriages, and they end up making a deal to kill each other's wives. The protagonist of this book, Sandy Kinsolving, decides to back out of the deal, but the other man has something else in mind and goes ahead with his part of the bargain and kills Sandy's wife. The story spirals from that moment on and is, for the most part, quite interesting.
There were two editorial errors though. One: Sandy's wife is killed while he is waiting in a limo for her. While waiting, he takes a mobile phone call from his brother-in-law, but is OFF the phone at the time of the actual killing. However, he and his bro-i-l both tell the police that they were talking at the time ("I was still talking to him [his bro-i-l] when...the doorman came to get me") and that was simply not the case. I thought at first he was trying to cover himself but that was also not the case.
Second error: Sandy states later in the book that his wife had told him that she had pictures of him [commiting adultery]. Well, that never happened, at least in the conversation written in the book regarding why she wants a divorce and I would think that that would certainly be mentioned.
The book is typical Stuart Woods material, meaning certainly enjoyable but nothing worthy of any awards or high praise. I read this one in about 3 hours on a rainy Sunday. So if you enjoy Grisham-ish books and have a few hours to kill, this is certainly for you.

4 out of 5 stars Gotta love Stuart Woods!!!!.......2003-03-24

Stuart Woods always gives a quick read, filled with action. This book is no different. Within the first two chapters, the plot of the book is layed out. Sandy Kingsolving and Peter Martindale meet on an airplane. Ironically, they are both having difficulties with their wives, and plot to kill each others wife! They meet and work out the details, but Kingsolving has seconds thoughts and calls the entire thing off. His wife still ends up dead, and Martindale tries to blackmail him.

Will Kingsolving finish through with the plan and kill Martindale's wife next? Or will be go to the police and hope they believe him? Won't you be surprised when you find out just who Sandy is really supposed to kill...

5 out of 5 stars And the truth will set you free.......2006-06-27

Sometimes the truth is the last thing we want to hear. In this book, thirteen year-old Jocie stumbles upon one family secret after another. There is however, one truth that she's not sure she wants to hear, a truth that might forever change her relationship with the person that has always been there for her: her father.

Her mother left them years ago taking Jocie's sister,Tabitha, with her. She calls herself Dee Dee now, and has been in one unsuccessful relationship after another after leaving David, her preacher husband. The plot comes to a climax when Tabitha comes home pregnant, causing Jocie and David to think about the past.

The book is full of colorful characters. There is Zella, the snoopy secretary at the Banner newspaper office; Wes, a motorcycle riding confidant of Jocie's who says he's from Jupiter and who Zella says has surely been running from the law; and Sallie, the observant senior street singer and beggar of Hollyhill, who knows many secrets about the people in the community.

The author weaves a story that keeps you wondering: why has Aunt Love, the Bible quoting spinster, never maried? Will David fall in love again? Will the people at Mt. Pleasamt Church call him to be their pastor? What is Wes running away from? Is David Jocie's real father? Will Ogden Martin, one of Mt. Pleasant's Deacons, stop trying to thwart David's ministry?

This is a great read. You will fall in love with the characters and the town. It's like Mitford in Kentucky.

4 out of 5 stars Solid Story Line and a Pleasant Read.......2005-07-09

Until the summer of 1964, the most Jocie Brooke had to worry about was trying to be nice to obnoxious Ronnie Martin, being bombarded with Aunt Love's Scriptural quotes and wondering whether her father would become interim preacher at Mt. Pleasant church.

She hadn't had an entirely easy childhood. Her mother left, taking along Jocie's older sister, seven years earlier.

Outside of a general curiosity about the woman who gave birth to her and periodically missing the sister she fondly remembers, Jocie had come to terms with having an unconventional family. She had her father, of course, and her grandmother and great-aunt.

Perhaps the most important person in her life, after her own dad, was "Jupiterian" and newspaperman extraordinaire, Wes. He had shown up out of nowhere not intending to stay, but an instant attachment to young Jocie meant he was still there a decade later.

Now, God had answered two of Jocie's prayers--for a dog and the return of her sister Tabitha. Both were blessings in their own way, yet both also proved to be portholes to long-buried family secrets.

Jocie, having been weaned on the Bible and newspaper publishing, was a truth seeker and therefore determined to discover everything she could. However, when one hidden detail hit too close to home for her, she decided she wasn't ready to face it. Soon the greater threat of having to confront tragedy just might be what's necessary to put things into proper perspective for her.

The majority of Ann Gabhart's novel has the feel of the relaxed summer it's set in. Life, and the plot progression, is initially simple and easy-going.

One never knows what surprises God and nature has in store, though. Turbulent skies and unsteady pasts can change a person's life in an instant.

Readers should not be fooled or prematurely disappointed by what appears to be a sluggish beginning. In The Scent of Lilacs, surprises wait around every corner.

                    5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2005-07-01

This book is very inspirational and heartwarming. The characters and the community are so much like where I grew up that it brings back many childhood memories. The book also has several unexpected twists and turns that will keep you on the edge of your seat wondering what is going to happen next. I enjoyed the book very much and highly recommend it. I can't wait for the sequel to be published.

5 out of 5 stars inspirational family drama.......2005-05-25

In 1964 Hollyhill, Kentucky, the owner of the Hollyhill Barrier David Brooke knows why he can only be an interim pastor at the Mt. Pleasant Church because the congregation expects its leader married. Thus David works the newspaper to feed his extended family and the church out of love. Seven years ago, David's wife Adrienne left without a look back taking their older daughter then thirteen years old Tabitha with her. She left behind their other child then six years old Jocie. David's septuagenarian Aunt Love lives with them, but he feels more like a referee between his two female relatives than their kin.

Jocie wants to know about her family to what made Aunt Love into a preaching stoic spinster who is turning senile except for her biblical citations and why her mother left especially without her. She would also like to see her older sister who turn twenty shortly. As Jocie investigates her recent roots, secrets some would prefer left hidden begin to surface; she learns more about her aunt, her parents, and even the newspaper pressman.

THE SCENT OF LILACS is a well written Christian historical family drama that sub-genre will deeply cherish. Jocie is a great inquisitive young teen struggling to understand the dynamics that engulf her in a shroud. The totally in black Aunt love will surprise readers when they learn alongside Jocie about her past. Finally, David is split apart as suffers guilt over his broken marriage and loss of a child and finding solace tending to his flock so that secularly he feels broken while spiritually connected. Ann. H. Gabhart provides an inspirational family drama.

2 out of 5 stars It was readable.......2004-08-31

I will start off by saying that the book did have some interesting elements and at times can be kind of spooky. I might have given the book 3 stars if it had not been marketed as a romance novel. As an avid reader of romance I expected the relationship between the two characters to be the main focus of the story. The story centered more on the ghosts and the relationship between the two siblings. Furthermore the romance between Kate and Luke wasn't really developed and it happened suddenly. I felt that it should have occurred more slowly and realistically. I also was not satisfied with the ending, it didn't provide a lot of closure in my opinion. Overally, I would say that the book is readable, but not as good as it could have been.

2 out of 5 stars Melodrama with insufficient romance.......2003-02-08

Kate is the sister of Edwin Whittingham, who has just inherited their great-uncle's house and fortune. There is a condition to the will, however: they must spend every night of the entire month of October in Bryce House, Edwin's inheritance, and only then will the fortune be his. When they get to the house, they discover that it is haunted, and so bad are the ghostly apparitions that the servants will not remain in the house after dusk.

There are two ghosts: a `gentleman' who wears Cavalier-era clothing and carries a dagger, and who tends to pace up and down and throw furniture about, and a `lady' who always smells of lilacs and looks sad. Sceptical at first, on her first night in the house Kate is terrified. Both ghosts appear, and she also finds an ice-cold stretch of corridor which makes her sense something of danger.

However, she also meets, and falls in love with, their neighbour, the Earl of Bryce - yes, he is linked to Bryce House, but it's a long story and not essential to the plot. So even if she thought of leaving, there is a reason to stay. But will the ghosts drive her away - or even worse, drive her insane?

To like this book, I suppose you'd have to be a fan of both Gothic novels and first-person narratives. I don't mind first-person - and after all, one of the best romance novels of all time is both first-person and Gothic: Jane Eyre. Having said that, Barbara Hazard, though not bad, is no Charlotte Bronte.

As another reviewer commented, the romance element was very much part of the background, and that's simply not good enough for me. At first, Bryce seems cynical and unwelcoming, and later he behaves as if he wouldn't be averse to a casual flirtation with Kate. It's a very sudden step from there to his proposal, which actually happens very early in the book: after he kisses Kate, I did expect him to act as if it was nothing serious.

The main plot is not the romance, but the truth about the ghosts and what's really going on at Bryce House. That wouldn't have interested me as much in any case, but I also felt in the end that the solution was too improbable. Unlike another reviewer, I hadn't seen through the plot at an early stage, and to me the dénouement was insufficiently foreshadowed so as to make it incredible - and also left too many questions in my mind.

Ultimately, therefore, I found the book unsatisfying, and now I need to go and find a proper *romance* to read instead.

1 out of 5 stars WARNING!!!! FIRST PERSON!!!!.......2001-11-03

If you don't like first person, you will not enjoy this book, even if you enjoy Barbara Hazard. The previous review is correct. It's a great gothic if you enjoy gothic. I don't. I also don't enjoy "first person" writing. Rex Stout's Nero Wolfe stories are an exception. You get to know all the characters through the eyes of Archie. (If you want to stick with regency era, Joan Wolf also does great first person.) Not in this book. Barbara Hazard has always been a sure read for me. This book so disappointed me I was unable to get past page 10. I went through the book randomly trying to get the book to catch my interest since it's Barbara Hazard, I still couldn't. When I read the last 20 to 30 pages of the book randomly, I'm glad I didn't waste my time. As I said before, I enjoy Barbara Hazard, and if you usually enjoy Barbara Hazard, try the book with the above warnings in your mind. You might enjoy the book, but probably not.

4 out of 5 stars a good old fashioned gothic romance.......2001-08-13

"The Scent of Lilacs" by Barbara Hazard possesses all the ingredients of a gothic romance -- Edwin Whittingham receives unexpected news that he has inherited his dead great-uncle's wealth and home in the coastal town of Lechton. And so, happy at the prospect of no longer being penniless, Edwin and his younger sister, Katherine, make for Bryce House. There is however one small condition to this inheritance: Edwin must stay at Bryce House for a whole month, nights included, or else forfeit the inheritance. And when Edwin and Katherine finally reach Bryce House, they discover the reason behind this strange condition: apparently Bryce House is haunted by a gentleman ghost, and a weeping lady. Edwin and Katherine must prove their mettle by sticking it out for an entire month.

Of course neither sibling believes in ghosts. But their belief suffers a few knocks when first they realise that all the servants refuse to spend the nights at the house, and when they themselves begin to hear and see the ghosts. However it is only to Katherine that the weeping lady appears before, leaving behind her a scent of lilacs... Strong minded and practical, Katherine, however refuses to allow a couple of ghosts to faze her -- finally she has a home of her own, and money to be able to indulge in new clothes and a horse. She even finds romance with a dashing and enigmatic neighbour, Luke Tremaine. But as the deadline for month's stay at Bryce House draws to a close, things begin to fall apart for Katherine. Edwin disapproves of her romance with Luke, and the ghosts seems to have become nosier and more sinister, and seem to have decided to concentrate on haunting only her. Katherine is beginning to fear that the ghosts are driving her to madness. Could she be right?

"The Scent of Lilacs" is mainly a gothic romance because while the romance between Katherine and Luke does figure into this novel quite a bit, it comes of as being a little incidental. I, for one, was totally caught up in the haunting and the fact that halfway through the novel, only Katherine was singled out as the beneficiary of all that ghostly dos. It is rather obvious what is going on and who is behind all the incidents, but Barbara Hazard does a masterly job of making you wonder if Katherine would indeed be frightened into madness or if she would be saved. Katherine is a rather unique heroine in that not only is she beautiful, intelligent and practical minded, but that she also suffers from bouts of depression, thus giving credence to Katherine's own fear that she may be losing her mind. However, I did find it a little galling that given that Hazard had painted Katherine as a clever and sensible young woman, that she did not allow for Katherine to suspect what was really going on, even when she had the evidence before her very eyes. It was a little irksome (for me anyway) that Katherine had to be rescued, though I'll admit that this did add to the "fearful" atmosphere of the novel, as you wondered if Katherine would be rescued in time or not.

If you're in the mood for a gothic romance very much along the lines of a Victoria Holt-like novel, then "The Scent of Lilacs" will more than satisfy you. The romance bit is almost completely sidelined, but the ghostly goings-on will more than make up for that lack! "The Scent of Lilacs" is something quite different form the usual Regency romance novels, but is nonetheless still quite a fun read

                      4 out of 5 stars Heartwarming story........2004-07-13

The above review by HK is excellent and I agree with it totally.
The story has it all. The beautiful, selfish sister. The plain, compassionate sister who is in love with her sister's beau. The new start in an arena that is challenging to say the least. The hunky beau who is a big self absorbed with thepossibility of an early death but in actuality shows us how research may have begun in the early years of medicine. It deals with gender bias andof course the plight of the unmarried woman. And somehow it all gets tied up in a pretty bow so that the ending is believable. It's fairly unusual to find a story with a likeable piglet, chickens you feel sorry for and scarey "big" guys, Indian and others who become familiar, enjoyable characters. But this one did it all quite nicely.

5 out of 5 stars Heartwarming combination of western and Americana.......1998-02-20

Lexy Tate has loved Jake Westfield all her life even though she is aware that he loves her flighty and shallow sister Megan, who marries someone else. Jake and Lexy attend medical school together. Jake becomes distraught when he loses a pregnant patient and her unborn child. He turns to Lexy for solace, but soon the pair makes love. However, at the critical moment of their coupling, Jake calls out for Megan, destroying the experience for Lexy.

She immediately throws him out of her room and, even though she is pregnant, ultimately out of her life. Due in part from Lexy's suitors' shenanigans, the couple fails to see each other for four years. They meet by accident when Lexy visits an isolated California military fort where her pregnant sister is living. Jake is the medical physician at the installation. Lexy realizes that her feelings for Jake still thrive as do his for her. Both have reasons to remain silent, at least that is until their mutual love for their daughter forces them to examine their past ghosts and deal with them so that they can find a future together.

SCENT OF LILACS links the action of a western romance with the emotional depth of an Americana. This brings to the readers a special romantic blend that could only successfully come from someone with the remarkable talent of Jane Bonander. The hero and heroine, in their own unique ways, capture the heart of the audience. However, it is their daughter and a piglet who steal the show (never star with children or animals) as that duo offer the needed relief from the tensions of an emotionally heartbreaking and deep love story.

From Booklist: *Starred Review* Thirteen-year-old Jocie Brooke prays God will send her a dog and wishes her senile aunt would stop quoting scripture. The setting is semirural Kentucky. The story revolves around Jocie's dad, David, a newspaper editor and the "interim" pastor of a little Baptist church. Where is Jocie's mom? She left seven years ago, taking Jocie's older sister with her. David's strange marital status explains why he's always "interim" and also why he's so sad. Jocie gets her mutt, the onslaught of Bible verses is ameliorated, and real drama emerges as Jocie explores her family's secrets in this universal tale of growing up. Book Description

A story of the lasting power of love, told amidst the grandeur of the Atlantic coast from Block Island, Rhode Island, Ocean City and Assateague Island, Maryland and south to the Florida Keys. Hank Gaskins, running to escape the consequences of a barroom fight, attempts to hide in the sword fishing industry of Block Island. There, one summer, he meets a woman who will change his life forever. And then she is gone. Scent of Lilacs is an enduring love story of a relationship between a seafaring man and the woman that captures his heart; it is a tale of a relationship that spans life and death and of the special woman that makes it so. Gaskins goes on to become one of the country's most successful lawyers and businessmen, finding riches, power and prestige almost beyond imagining. In his later years, he returns to Block Island seeking a final reunion with the woman of his dreams and bringing the answer to the mystery of what had happened fifty years before. From the pulpits and dories of the Block Island sword fishing fleet of the 1950s, to the conference rooms of the major law firms and the halls of power in Washington, to the creation of 'Buffington,' Gaskins' famous estate, and a return to the sea, the author spins a tale of the sea and of the land, of love and of tragedy, of a lifetime searching for answers, and the events engendered when the answers are known. A surprising ending to a larger and a longer than life love story.
