Book Description

Dan Broderick was one of California's most successful attorneys; his wife, Betty, a beautiful socialite. But when Betty discovered Dan's hidden life, the façade of LaJolla's golden couple was shattered. What followed was a vicious five-year battle that finally ended in a shocking double-murder.

A Harvard Law School graduate, Dan manipulated the law to strip Betty of everything she loved: her home, her friends - even her children. When she frantically tried to fight back, he had her committed to a mental hospital. His new wife, Linda, even sent the once-beautiful Betty wrinkle cream ads and weight loss pamphlets.

Consumed by hatred and thoughts of revenge, Betty's rage exploded on the night of November 5, 1989. Before the sun rose the next day, Dan Broderick and his gorgeous new wife were dead - their bullet-riddled bodies wrapped in the blood-soaked sheets of their bed.

5 out of 5 stars Hell hath no fury ..........2007-07-10

Betty Broderick. Where oh where to start with this case? This was a murder case that spoke to us on so many levels, made us all shake our heads, turn our noses up, and secretly fear our own insecurities and what we are capable of.

Betty and Dan were high school / college sweethearts, who started off with such hopes and dreams that they would have a wonderful life together. Their family started almost immediately after they married (their first of 5 children arriving nearly 9 months to the day they married). Dan went to medical school and later law school while Betty raised the kids and did the primary bread winning as a school teacher. Once Dan had completed his education, he accepted a job with a California law firm and they moved to the west coast. From there he began to build his career to become one of the most successful and wealthiest men in town, and Betty could quit working to dedicate all her time to her kids.

It wasn't, however, a fairy tale. Dan and Betty's relationship was troubled from the beginning. They would eventually divorce, and it was anything but a peaceful affair. Betty went from being a "normal person" to a pathetic, psychotic hysteric. Dan began to cheat with Linda, and would eventually marry her. Betty's hysteria went from reasonable to destructive (driving her car through the front door of the house which got her thrown into a psych hospital, for example). It all came to a head when she bought a gun, snuck into her ex husband's house one morning, and shot both him and Linda while they slept. Now she's behing bars.

It's so hard to take sides in something like this. You see so clearly what Betty wanted and what was taken away from her. Yet you also see what Dan wanted, and what was taken away from him. Not to mention Linda. And the kids. And their friends, and their families. So many marriages start off so innocently and with such hopes, and so many end so bitterly. Where are those two people who were so in love once in the wedding pictures? Their partnership fell apart. But then again, as I have seen, the majority of people I have seen marry never should have. They were not right for each other. And sometimes we have to realize that and leave the marriages. It's when one doesn't want to that you will get a crazy story like this. Divorce is never pleasent, that's for sure, and you will face terrible times as you realize you have just had the rug ripped out from under you. But, have some dignity. If not for yourself, for your family and friends.

And, Betty, as far as I am concerned, has a genuine element of evil in her. I understand her sense of despair, her jealousy of the other woman, etc., but she has caused such chaos. It would not could not end until someone died. Dan and Linda had to die before Betty's rage was satisfied. To this day she has expressed no remorse over the fact that the both of them are dead. She says "Dan wanted me dead, but I'm alive". Alive to rot in prison, alive to have lost everything, and alive to be a sad joke to many.

4 out of 5 stars There are No Winners Here! Just Losers!.......2007-06-12

I first saw the television film adaptation which was pro-Dan and Linda all the way. They never showed Dan and Linda bad-mouthing Betty. In the film, Betty was portrayed brilliantly by Meredith Baxter but she played her as a demented, sore loser who never got over losing Dan, her man. In the book, we read more about Betty's feuding which was more like a World War and Dan's indifference to his former wife's well-being. He tossed her aside when he found a suitable replacement like hiring and firing but Betty didn't go easily or ever. She was obsessed with Dan and Linda and defeating them no matter what the cost. The book dispels that Dan was a wonderful husband and father only when he was forced too by Betty dumping the kids off one by one. Betty was smart, attractive, and wittier than some of the most professional comedians according to one of her close friends. She discharged by her husband rather because he decided to have a younger model and version. Now, I don't condone Betty's actions when she shot and killed them in their sleep. Of course if I was Linda, I would run away as fast as I could. Yes, you're in love but look at his first wife. I don't understand why Dan disowned his daughter Lee Gordon Broderick upon his death maybe for siding with Betty over Dan. Dan never liked to lose in life but he lost in death. There is a website where you can't leave flowers and notes on Dan and Linda's graves because it has been misused. That blockage is usually reserved for dictators and serial killers. I think Linda was in way over her head when she married Dan not seeing this coming and thinking that Dan could save them both. I remember in the film where a senior secretary played by Debra Jo Rupp warned Dan about how to treat people fairly when she saw Linda rise above her. It was a poignant moment in the film and maybe showed a side of Dan's egotism that he can handle everything. Like I wrote, there are no winners from this situation. I feel sorry for the children the most for suffering through the loss of their father, stepmother, and their mother's role in their murders.

2 out of 5 stars Betty.......2005-12-07

This book was ok but not near as good as until the twelfth of never. that book really gives you more of an inside look into the life of Dan and Betty Broderick. This book is a quick read if you are looking for a light read on the story and not a lot of details.

3 out of 5 stars One of The Lighter Books,Another Quick Read.......2005-09-29

I feel like a professional as far as this case goes. LOL I have stated before that after seeing the totally pro Dan and Linda movie (The Betty Broderick Story) I started reading and watching everything about this case, including the court tv show, A&E Justice Story, MNCBS Headliners etc...While I will grant that Betty murdering them was over the top, some of the stunts of Dan and Linda were over the top too. You also have to keep in mind that Dan was the one whose "friends" were the lawyers and judges, not Betty. In spite of friends saying she could have gone to another county to find a lawyer, it really was not as easy as all that. The woman was completly blind-sided by this man she had worked so hard for. It truly was a sad, sad story. This book was quick, but did not have many details and certainly not reserched as the book by Bella Stumbo was. It was okay and added maybe a little more insight to the case but not much.

5 out of 5 stars WOW!!! Real life drama.......2005-08-29

I became introduced to this case through court TV and many documentaries, and all I can say is WOW!!!! No matter what you feel about the victims or Betty, you have to feel for the children who were put through this. I was heartbroken while reading this book. It has the same feel of the book I read for the movie "Goodfellas" and you do sort of feel caught up in the mess. It's sad really, but it's a teaching lesson if you look it at in a positive light.

5 out of 5 stars Not For The Queasy.......2002-04-13

A heartbreaking as well as frightening look into the mind of one truly sick, twisted individual. Should make every parent aware of the predators that sometimes lurk behind the faces of seemingly harmless strangers. I'm glad I don't have children, otherwise after reading this book I doubt I'd ever let them out of the house again. I pray readers with children will take away lessons to teach to their kids concerning strangers. God save them from monsters like Dodd.

5 out of 5 stars a must read for all parents.......2000-09-26

As a true crime reader and a parent, I found this book very disturbing but interesting. It made me speak again to my children and what can happen to them in a blink of an eye. Westley was a TRUE MONSTER. It is a shame that he never got all the help he needed. The story is very graphic but it gets the point across. It almost makes me never want to let my children out of my sight again. Read it you will not be sorry!!!!!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars A shocking true crime book- one every parent should read........1999-02-01

Driven to Kill is indeed a shocking true account of the most disgusting of all crimes, child murder. Gary C. King has included in this book accounts from the law enforcement agencies involved in the case of Westley Allan Dodd, as well as segments from Dodd's 'diary of death'. The details of Dodd's crimes have not been left out by King which only emphasizes the true horror of his crimes. Every parent should read this book as it opens your eyes to what kind of people are really out there and emphasizes the need to watch your children at all times. Photographs of his victims, the law enforcement officers and signifcant places involved in the case are included in this book. Segments of the trial testimony have been added including statements from the victims' families and Dodd himself. Police interviews have also been included. I was engrossed while reading King's account of this twisted serial pedophile, although at times I felt sick thinking about what had happened to these boys. It truly opened my eyes to the vulnerability of the most precious thing on earth - our children.

I could have written this book. It contains nothing more than what was already in Texas Monthly, the local news, and Dateline. Mr. Linedecker threw this together in a hurry and it's not worth your time or money.

4 out of 5 stars Oh Lord, Won't You Buy Me a Mercedes-Benz..........2003-08-24

Ok, I admit it: I cheat my diet now and then with a nutritious Krispy Kreme donut, & sometimes I read the ever erudite Enquirer - what else to do when stranded in a slow-moving check-out line? Cliff Linedecker, Best-Selling Author in his own write, has teamed with National Enquirer staffers in several recent rush-to-print-while-the-story's-still-hot "true crime" books. And the results are, amazingly, pretty good.

This book goes beyond the quickie sound bites and sensationalistic snippets I saw on TV. (Alas, I must toil every day to earn my Daily Bread and so, to my chagrin, cannot lie about the house all day watching Court TV and eating bon-bons.) It is the saga of the dynamic duo of Clara and David Harris cum Texas triage with the infiltration of trollop Gail Bridges. The cover aptly features the "murder weapon," a 4,000 pound Mercedes and embossed tires tracks all around. There are many "Wow! I didn't know that!" moments. Clara was a Columbian dentist. That Texas law regarding justifiable homicide if catching one's wife in flagrante delicto was not as sexist as Urban Legend had it.

While reading this book, just remember the tabloid from which it sprang: an entertaining diversion, a guilty pleasure about as substantial and nutritious as a Krispy Kreme, and devour them both. Reviewed by TundraVision, Amazon reviewer

5 out of 5 stars enthralling mystery.......2006-02-01

Rebecca Monroe own Vintage & Classics, a car restoration shop in Head Tide, Maryland, which is the prime reason Racer Peyton Madison's chief mechanic hires as part of the crew in the open-wheel race at Indianapolis. She is glad to get away from home after learning the people who raised her aren't her biological parents and she has a grandmother she knows nothing about. Being at Indie is a dream comes true for Rebecca who loves driving vehicles from the sixties, seventies, and eighties.

The dream turns into a nightmare when a rash of accidents happen including a cut break-line, watered gas and stripped lug nuts occur. The car originally supposed to race is so torn up that Peyton replaces that car with the more expensive and glamorous Lotus 49C. Rebecca is positive that the accidents were really sabotage in disguise; her assertion is confirmed when someone shoots at them hitting the windshield. Needing the money and not wanting any negative publicity, Peyton refuses to call the police, a decision that will cost him when the saboteur comes after him. Rebecca is determined to find out who the criminal is and why Peyton is the target; a choice that puts the life of an innocent child, who attached herself to Rebecca, in danger.

In DRIVEN TO MURDER, Judith Skillings provides a racing mystery that is complex and cleverly constructed with so more crossroads readers won't know which path is the right one. The protagonist charges into danger knowing doing nothing will not make things safer. Rebecca is spunky, kind and independent, which brings her the affections of two very different men. Readers will thoroughly enjoy this enthralling mystery.

3 out of 5 stars Going for a Drive When You'e Got all the Time in the World to Kill!.......2007-01-12

Driven, a simply written novel is an easy read that grips you into the storyline so much that you don't want to put it down. Granted yes, it is very basically written, but the fact that the action kept coming and coming meant I didn't want to put it down.

Driven is the story of a homicide detective who loses his grandpa to a serial killer who uses other people's cars as weapons and somehow always manages to not only survive each substantial crash, but escape as well. Gavin, the detective is obsessed with catching up with the killer, he has no intention of asking him twice to freeze when he has him at gunpoint. Krogan, the killer is not going to stop and will punish anyone trying to make him look bad or who gets in the way of his fun.

Got a little concerned when the biblical elements of the storyline started to appear, was very worried I was about to be preached to like when you unknowingly stumble across a tunnel vision Christian writer when you thought you were picking up a normal thriller or supernatural/horror novel. Authors such as Terri Blackstock and Robert Whitlow have certainly disgraced themselves by doing this and ripping off the unsuspecting public in the process of hard earned money. To my pleasant surprise Griffiths never started trying to convert me to his beliefs.

Driven is no masterpiece, but it is a pleasant enough way to pass the time.

2 out of 5 stars Shadad this book.......2004-06-11

For those of you that didn't get it, the Shadad that Krogan keeps yelling is the Hebrew word meaning "to devestate or to destroy". So, how come a Christian minister can expell the devil? I think that parts of the story actually show that a Christian minister and the devil are on the same side. Just my considered opinion, if Amazon.com still allows me to have one!

4 out of 5 stars Riveting!.......2004-04-23

A book such as this one touches on a realm that Christian fiction often doesn't address. Could it be called "Christian horror"?

I picked up this book at the local library after reading Malchus, another Griffiths book, and I was very impressed.

Mr. Griffiths style of writing is flexible and polished. Any of his works would definitely be worth reading.

2 out of 5 stars childish.......2003-11-19

Moderately compelling plot line drowned in boring characters weakly drawn and juvenile writing. Actually, for young teens it's probably a moderately satisfying read. Only managed to finish it for lack of something else handy to read. The second book (takedown) is surprisingly even more shallow and comes off as nothing more than a harlequin romance with a slightly better plot line. So bad I just couldn't finish it, which is a rare thing for me. Got both books because they sounded interesting and had strong reviews. Simply shocked by the celebrity reviews; what, did these people even read this book or were they just bought off? If you are interested in supernatural detective cross-over novels, give F. Paul Wilson's Repairman Jack series a try, they won't insult your intelligence and are a heck of a lot more fun to read.

5 out of 5 stars Very Unusual!!.......2003-11-04

This novel has delved into the super natural realm .It is done in a very believable way. The characters are strong and believable, there is a lot of depths to there personality. This novel along with "Takedown"(by the same author)are the best books in the Christian Fiction field that I have read.Other Christian authors could learn from Mr.Griffiths.

            Customer Reviews:

            5 out of 5 stars Great story.......2007-07-26

EmBee has already given a synopsis of the book's beginning, so I won't add my own. Dog Wizard is the third tale set in this particular world (the other two are, in order, The Silent Tower and The Silicon Mage). As usual with Hambly, multiple plots come together and must be resolved before the book's end, the heroes are unusual, fully-fleshed out people, and there's a love story. The Windrose Chronicles is one of my favorite Hambly series, and Antryg is one of my favorite characters. So to finally get to read a story written from his point of view was a real treat. Let me emphasize that again just in case the author ever reads this and cares what I think: I LOVED having Antryg narrate. We also get a close up look at the Citadel of Wizards, and the men and women who live there. The secondary characters here are compelling, enough so that a spinoff book, The Stranger at the Wedding, was written about one of them, and the Citadel itself is fascinating.

Dog Wizard cries out for a sequel, and the author has apparently said she intend to write one...someday. I hope that day comes soon.

            5 out of 5 stars A must-read for fans of Antryg.......2004-03-02

Read The Silent Tower and The Silicon Mage? Wonder what happened to Joanna and Antryg after the miraculous save and his exile to magicless Los Angeles?

Well, they lived happily ever after. For a couple of months. Suddenly everyone Antryg knows has the same distressing dream... the senders can't get to Antryg, and they know it, but the message is clear: we can hurt the people around you.

And then Joanna disappears, kidnapped again across the Void. Antryg obeys the summons and is nabbed by the Council of Wizards. There's trouble again in Ferryth, and they want his help... if he's not the one causing the trouble himself.

Not trusting him one bit, the Council binds Antryg's power - leaving him with only his wits to defend himself, find Joanna, and get to the bottom of this before reality flies apart at the seams.

This book is not as wham-bam fabulous as the Windrose chronicles, but it's a good read, some of Hambly's better work. And if you, like so many, really need just one more dose of the daft wizard hero, you gotta get this book.

5 out of 5 stars Great to see things from Antryg's perspective.......2003-08-23

I've watched Barbara Hambly improve as a writer since her first books (not something every writer bothers to do when they get published) and I've been very impressed. I loved "The Silent Tower" and "The Silicon Mage" when they first came out, more than anything else because the character of Antryg Windrose was so compelling. When I finally got hold of "Dog Wizard", I was very struck by it, because for the first time I got to see things through Antryg's eyes, and it did not disappoint. Antryg's past experiences still haunt him, and shape who he is, rather than being thrown out with the last plot as many writers would do. Emotionally it rings very true to me, and embodies what I think is some of the best of Hambly's writing.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful book, even if I haven't read the others, yet..........1999-05-20

This book was picked up on chance, I enjoyed the Untrained Wizard so tried this one. The characters are so realistic and the story was such that the ending was not as was expected. I haven't read the others and was able to enjoy this one as a single book so that says alot for her storytelling. Now I will be reading the first two and hoping for a fourth or fifth. If anyone wants to read a book about magic and good vs. evil then this is one of the best to read.

            5 out of 5 stars My Favorite.......1998-09-30

I've read every Barbara Hambly book published, but I think this is my favorite. She has a knack for inventing characters that are complex and real, but Antryg and Joanna are not only believable but wonderful. I can't think of them without a feeling of fondness that I'd usually associate with my own family.

            Book Description

Rage Winnoway’s closest friends have always been her four dogs: Bear, Billy Thunder, Elle, and Mr. Walker. When Rage sets off for the hospital where her mother lies in a coma, the dogs and the neighbor’s goat tag along. On the way, they run into the firecat, who talks them into going through a magical gate. And something wonderful happens! Each of Rage’s friends is transformed. Bear becomes a real bear; Billy Thunder, a teenage boy; Elle, a warrior woman; Mr. Walker, a small, large-eared gentleman; and the goat, a satyr with an inferiority complex. Together, Rage and her companions embark on a quest to save the world of Valley, a journey that is somehow tied to Rage’s family. In this brilliant tale of courage and transformation, Isobelle Carmody captures the magic of Narnia and the whimsy of Wonderland without losing sight of the real world and all its difficulties.

4 out of 5 stars Rage, Rage Against the Dying Light . . ........2006-06-06

Sometimes it's all in the name. And author Isobelle Carmody has a talent for them. Take the heroine of Night Gate, for example. Who doesn't immediately become intrigued by a name like Rage Winnoway? The minute I heard the name, it conjured up all sorts of images in my mind. And I'm glad to say that Rage lives up to the name she was given. Night Gate is the first book in a fantasy trilogy by Award-winning Australian author Isobelle Carmody. While her books are not as well known in the States, this will hopefully change as more of her exceptional work is made available here.

At it's heart, this story is a fantasy quest that starts in the contemporary world. Rage Winnoway's mother is in the hospital in a coma. Convinced her mother needs her, Rage recklessly decides to go to the hospital herself. But when she leaves, her four dogs and the neighbor's goat tag along on the trek. On her way, Rage encounters a strange creature called a firecat who tells her the only way to save her mother lies in running an errand for a wizard. To do so she must step through a mysterious gate that transports her to another world. Her animal friends are transported along with her, but each of them has been transformed into a human, or human like creature. But the firecat's quest is not so simple as it seems, and to save her mother, Rage may also have to save a dying world where the magic is disappearing. It's a fast moving tale in a world where oppressive order in a male dominated city is set against free spirited magic of the female led wildlands. Rage must find a way to navigate through the cast of characters to find her answers to the firecat's riddle. There's some decent world-building and character building in this story. While I felt that the "oppressive patriarchy" got a bit overdone and simplified at times, the author did not allow her characters to fall into stereotypes of good and evil. Rage's companions are especially vivid in their depictions, and Rage comes to understand both their joy and sadnesses in life, in turn understanding her own life better. While this remains a quest fantasy, part of the story is about Rage's own understanding of her childhood and family history, and how caring for others can change entire worlds.

What Ms. Carmody does exceptionally well is that she breathes life into her words and weaves familiar elements into new shapes. The story itself may be conventional, but the characters and the telling of it make it something new again. It's a good example of female protagonist fantasy fiction for the 9-14 year old age range. This is clearly the first book of a trilogy, but the story told in this book wraps up nicely by the end, so that while we know there's more to come, readers aren't waiting to find out what happened to their characters at a cliffhanger moment. Overall, I really enjoyed the story and the progress of the characters and felt satisfied at the ending. I can't give it quite five stars, but I'm hoping that the next book in the trilogy, Winter Door, will be better than this first.

Readers who like this quest fantasy series may also want to check out Gregor the Overlander by Suzanne Collins or, for a classic series, try The Dark is Rising sequence by Susan Cooper. If you're looking for more of Ms. Carmody's work, be sure to check out her Obernewtyn chronicles: Obernewtyn, The Farseekers and Ashling. These post apocalyptic SF are for a slightly older crowd, but well worth a read.

            Happy Reading! ^_^ Shanshad

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for kids and adults!!!!.......2005-07-05

I loved this book, it made me feel like when I was a kid and read the Narnia books for the first time. It's got animals, magic and a GIRL as the lead main character. And, animals get to talk in the book. What else could you ask for? The story had a small little hint of sadness to it that made it realistic, or made you feel close to the main character, but it wasn't completely depressing.

I love this author's story and I plan on reading her other books and buying them to support her work!! I am anxiously waiting for the next book to come out but I might have to order it from Austrailia and not wait for Random House to publish here in the U.S.

AMAZON you better get the other books of this triology and make them available or I'll have to shop somewhere else for them!!!!!

The girl, the apprentice, and the dogs of iron is full of excitement and jealousy all at the same time! This is a book that people can learn from. It shows kids like us how to work together, even if you are against each other or are people who don't want or even don't like to work together, but no matter what that you have to work together. When I finshed this book I felt lucky that I'm an only child and that we didn't have to many family gatherings. It is a very exciting book and I hope that you will agree with me after you read this book, this might be the best book you have ever read!
