Book Description
In 1195, high-spirited young knights, drunken squires, pickpockets, and horse thieves are pouring into Exeter for a one-day jousting tournament. Not even the discovery of a naked corpse in the River Exe can spoil the excitement. During the tournament, there is a serious altercation between Hugo Peverel, a manor lord from Tiverton, and a Frenchman by the name of Reginald de Charterai. When, two days later, Sir Hugo’s blood-soaked body is found in a barn on his estate, de Charterai would seem the obvious culprit. But there’s no shortage of people who wished the despised Hugo dead. All three of his brothers have a motive, as do his stepmother and his attractive young widow. And just what is the connection between Sir Hugo’s murder and the battered body in the River Exe? With so many suspects from which to choose, Sir John is confronted with one of the most difficult cases of his distinguished career.

History and Mystery.......2007-03-19
For a pathologist, he is an excellent writer. It is story and history combined and melds well with the subsequent century that Michael Jecks writes about regarding "Crowners and bailiffs." I regard both as good writers, which is an understatement.
Crown John's Patience is Tested.......2005-09-20
Bernard Knight's books are always a good read and well researched and authentic without overpowering the reader with information he either does not need to know or is not interested in anyway.
This case for Crowner John revolves around the tournament scene. These events took place regularly, but not always with the blessing of the King (Richard the Lionheart) and other later Kings, who quite rightly thought that a large gathering of heavily armed men was not always conducive the their own health and their grip on the throne.
Crowner John is called from the inauguration of the new sheriff and preparations for the tournament that is about to take place to an unidentified body. The death is not accidental, but a brutal murder and Sir John has to start tracking down who the man is before he can set about finding his killer or killers.
His inquiries lead him towards a well known family in the County the Peverals. Hugo who has already disgraced himself in the tournament is now head of the family after his father William was killed in somewhat strange circumstances at a tournament held earlier in the year.
Hugo has an older brother, who has been overlooked as Lord of the Manor because of the falling sickness, and Hugo has greedily taken the title. He also has two younger brothers, one of them Ralph is also well known on the tournament circuit.
The family do everything they can to block Sir John's inquiries and the relationship becomes so bad between them that it could have serious consequences for the Crowner . . .

From the supplier: The security director must be able to assess the quality of hate letters to determine whether these can escalate to physical violence directed against the recipient. The language, sentence structure, and content can help determine the writer's psychological state, motivation and seriousness of intent. Book Description
The mystery of the Taurus Reach is about to be revealed.
Ancient secrets lie on the fourth planet of the Jinoteur system, and three great rivals are fighting to control it. The Federation and the Klingon Empire want to wield its power; the Tholian Assembly wants to bury it.
But the threat stirring on that distant world is more dangerous than they realize. The Shedai, who ruled the Taurus Reach aeons ago, have risen from their ages of deathlike slumber -- to gather, marshal their strength, and take their revenge.
To keep Jinoteur from falling into enemy hands, the crews of Starbase Vanguard and the U.S.S. Sagittarius must risk everything: friends...loved ones...their own lives. But the sacrifices they make may prove too terrible for them to bear.

Great Finale for a great series.......2007-09-27
Reap the Whitlwind is a great finale to the Vanguard series (but hopefully not the last). Without going into too much detail, all of the characters return to the third part to finish investigating the mystery, as well as fight both the Klingons and Tholians in the mysterious-but-deadly Taurus Reach. The secret behind the metagenome is FINALLY REVEALLED! It all ties together on page 387 and the "true mission" brought to light in a very, very clever way.
If you're a fan of Trek, and have seen the movies, I highly reccommend this series. If you're bored of the "same old-same old" Trek we've been reading/seeing for the past 20 years (ie all the same, recycled garbage), Vanguard serves as a breath of fresh air.
Good story!.......2007-07-08
ANother well written and well constructed Vanguard story. If only more would be published sooner - it was a long wait from the first two to this one!
Harbinger review.......2007-07-03
This is the third book in the Star Trek: Vanguard #3: Reap the Whirlwind (Star Trek)series. This is a welcome addition to classic Trek lore.
Couldn't put it down!.......2007-06-22
I have to say I really enjoy the Vanguard Series of books. I agree that with there being a year between books it took a bit to get back up to speed - but it didn't take long for me to remember all the characters. I'm looking forward to Book 4. Even if you're not a Star Trek fan - you'll like this book. And seeing where a character from the Wrath of Khan gets started is quite intriguing. Maybe that can be explored in later books - even if only as a subplot.
Enjoy the read.
Fascinating Return to the Taurus Reach.......2007-06-21
It's difficult to keep up with a continuing series when the books come out a year apart. "Vanguard: Reap the Whirlwind" (published May 2007) is the third book in a series that started with "Vanguard: Harbinger" (published July 2005) and continued with "Vanguard: Summon the Thunderer" (published June 2006).
In the case of ordinary Star Trek books this perhaps wouldn't matter quite so much, everyone knows who Kirk, Spock and McCoy are, or Picard, Ricard and Data. But this series brings in a completely new cast of characters. Set in the period of The Original Series, it is placed on a space station in the distant Taurus Reach, an unexplored area contended for by the Federation, Tholians, and Klingons. It also contains a deep secret in the form of a massive genome left behind by a dormant, extremely ancient, and massively powerful people.
That said, there are a few characters from TOS, and in one case what might be a section of suspense isn't because anyone who has seen "The Wrath of Khan" knows a particular character is not about to die. But there's also a delightful surprise at the end when another character from that film suddenly appears.
Picking up "Reap the Whirlwind" a year after reading its predecessor, it takes a while to get up to speed. Author David Mack does a good job of reminding us who everyone is, and there is a very helpful "Vanguard Minipedia" in the back of the book, which unfortunately many readers may not discover until they get to the end of the book.
The story is good, many threads come together, and the book brings up interesting issues of ethics (or personal feelings) versus duty, or whether a potential threat to the survival of billions is worth a much more certain threat to thousands.

One of the best of the Plainsman series.......2001-07-06
Terry Johnston makes the battle come alive, the way he moves from how Crazy Horse is dealing with the battle, General Crook to Miles and Royall is incredible. I have become completely intrigued with the Rosebud Battle and looking for additional information. The whole Plainsman series is very good and I've enjoyed reading them all, they continue to get better and better. Can't wait to pick up the next one.
Johnson continues to make historical drama personal.......1999-09-04
His descriptions of the terrain, weather at the time of year, wildlife, and general conditions of the southeastern Montana Territory are so vividly accurate as to envelope the senses into believing you are there with Crook and his men (and woman). He takes a single historical act and brings it to life through the personalities of the characters replete with all of their emotions.Excellent reading. The pages move at a pace much quicker than expected.

Somewhere between 3 and 4 stars.......2003-04-21
This is a Mercedes Lackey novel. It has her style writen all over it. It's not up there with her best books, but her fans will like it.
Excellent.......2001-01-19
Reap the Whirlwind is an excellent collaboration by Lackey and Cherryh. Cherryh's work is obvious in the plot and setting; every scene fits yet the book isn't predictable or flawed by excess drama. Lackey's influence on the characters is equally obvious; they're warmer and better developed than Cherryh's usually are. Collaborations are often worse than either author produces alone, but as a fan of both Lackey and Cherryh I'm happy to say that this one works.
A Hidden Treasure.......2000-07-26
"Misty" Lackey (Mercedes) contributed to the writing of this delightful little book of "magic" ie...science...fantasy. It is set in a world where there is a society that is devoted to learning and knowledge. It also contains lots of swordwork and battles but with little gore. The heroine is an older woman who is fighting to keep her society from tearing itself apart politically. There are mongol type hordes fleeing from a greater danger, alliances, political intrigue, life, death, betrayal, love, and retribution. This is a wonderful summer beach read where you will laugh, cry, and even cheer the good guys in the end. This is a good read for high schoolers and an easy read for adults who just want a short escape for a while. If you are expecting a CJ Cherryth book, it's not in her style. It's more in the style of Mercedes who contributed most of the plot, style, etc. to the book. Girls will especially like this book since the heroines are real and believeable. The people in this book aren't shown as superheroes or perfect characters. The young have problems, the old have ambitions, and the innocent sometimes gets hurt. Pretty believeable for a story!
Lackey wrote it, not Cherryh........1999-12-09
Mercedes Lackey actually wrote the text of this book, not CJ Cherryh. If you are a Cherryh fan, you will probably not like it. It takes good basic plot and wordbuilding and ruins them with plebeian writing and puerile ideas, typical of Lackey's work.

Book Description
"Nothing can stay the same forever. We get in trouble in life when we think it can and will. Everything changes, or as King Solomon said in the Bible and The Byrds sang in the 60's, to everything there is a season and a time for every purpose under heaven. It's not a particularly easy lesson to learn, or a fun one for that matter. I learned it the summer between high school and college, and my life would never be the same."
Will's life is changing so quickly he can't keep up. He's moving out of his parents' home for the first time, changing careers, making new friends, and falling in love with the person he least expected. In the process, he's also learning a lot about himself. As if he doesn't have enough going on, his life-long best friend dies in what appears to be a drunken accident. But when Will receives a note hinting that it may not have been an accident after all, he finds that he can't rest until he knows the truth. With the help of Killian Kendall and his friends, Will begins an amateur investigation that will result in even more death. Will thought the biggest changes were behind him, but they had only just begun.
Reap the Whirlwind blends a coming-of-age story and mystery with a powerful love story. It is the winner of two Gay Writers Guild awards.

Coming-out with difficulty.......2006-12-05
Reap the Whirlwind is narrated by Will Keegan; he has just graduated and is considering taking a year out before college. He has grown up with two neighbourhood kids, Joey and Laura, his best friends. Will has a girlfriend, but somehow she is not the centre of his life, he'd drop arrangements with her at a moments notice to be with Joey. Laura also notices his preoccupation with Joey, and confronts him with the question, is he gay? Then at Joey's suggestion he moves out of his home to share an apartment with Aidan, who is openly gay. When Will is finally helped to admit to his true sexuality, he announces to Joey that he loves him. That's when the fireworks start, and he finds himself on a roller coaster ride involving rejection, love, his work, attempts at suicide, death and playing, along with his friends, amateur sleuth.
It is a gripping and certainly very interesting story, there is drama and suspense, a great deal happens in a very short time, and the characters are appealing. Yet somehow it just misses being totally absorbing. There is something not quite believable about it, perhaps it is the speed at which things happen, or maybe the characters are too young to be taken seriously in these circumstances. At times the dialogue is a little too gushing with overblown expressions of love and devotion. Then there is the feeling that there is some not very subtle campaigning going on here, pro-gay Christianity, anti-abortion, gay marriage, it is not a question of the right or wrongs of such beliefs, but being presented in this rather obvious way they detract from the story, and more importantly, one's involvement. What it comes down to is this, the story should have moved me, I should have been holding back the tears at the end, but it didn't, and I wasn't.
An Attempt At Being Original And Humorous.......2006-07-15
I had great expectations in regard to Reap The Whirlwind. I had read many reviews that Mr. Aterovis has written in the last couple of years. He's a stickler for detail and doesn't hold back with his opinions. So I knew I was in for a good read. However, I found him guilty of his own pet peeves. I don't know if this book was self-published...if it wasn't, the content editor, line editor and proof readers should all be shot. Above and beyond the typos - the characters were totally unbelievable. And then when the Bible stuff started coming in, it took all my effort not to throw the book out the window. But pat me on the back...I finished it. I'm so so disappointed. And a little bit of humor would have helped the story along. When he did try to work it in, it felt forced. And I'm sad to say that this storyline is one that I've read before. I'm sure that's an innocent thing but let's think up some really new, interesting material. And if that lead character started to cry one more time I was going to slap him! lol I really thought and hoped this was going to be a fantastic read. Mr. Aterovis is young enough that maybe he can learn from his mistakes.
Touching and engrossing.......2005-12-29
...though you do have to suspend your disbelief a little. Characters do have a habit of suddenly discovering they are gay, and they do have a habit of falling for each other left and right, but if you have an ounce of Romance in you, you will find the book as hard to put down as I did. I would rather the religious elements were left out, but they're not overbearing. I do hope, however, that the coming books in the series can move on from the coming out story. For being the second book in the Killian Kendall series, it could have had more Killian Kendall in it, though I can think of at least one plot development in future books that could explain it...
Needs an editor.......2005-01-30
It's always a bad sign when a book leaves me thinking that I could be a published writer, too. This author would benefit greatly from the red pen of a good editor.
Great basic concept but flawed execution.......2004-12-05
One can easily find a plot synposis on the WWW, so I won't put one in my review. I think it's kinda hard to judge that book. On the positive side you have its great basic concept. It's a mystery/detective novel with young protagonists. Next to the detective work Aterovis puts issues such as coming out as a gay male, Bible interpretations concerning homosexuality, self esteem problems concerning one's homosexuality and so on. That's something youth literature in German hasn't achived so far. German-language literature with gay male protagonists seems to be still muddled with stereotypes (just look at such books as "Mitte der Welt"!) and nonexisting plots. There are whole books just about (more or less stereotypical gay) boys wondering whether they're gay or not and whether that's a bad thing or not.
This book wants to present homosexuality as something as natural as heterosexuality and wants to present its gay characters not as "gay characters" (if you know what I mean) but as boys who happen to be gay just as there are boys who are straight.
And now to the negative aspects of the book. At the beginning, the protagonist describes himself as shy and introspective. Now that's okay with me, but during the book one has the impression he starts crying and/or get a hysterical breakdown and/or gets watery eyes on every third or fourth page (and not just because of serious issues). To put it mildly, I think that's rather too much crying going on here. The other gay boys in the book come across as real characters, but somehow they all seem to be very much like each other. Cute, clean with no rough edges, and with a certain urge to cry more than other people do. I don't want to sound rude but when one of the female characters told the protagonists "Get some b**ls!" I agreed with her. As the plot proceeds, the language and plot developement seem to get more and more overdone. There are really lots of "Oh my God"s in the dialogue and everybody always receives news with a mouth that is dropping wide open. People always have tons of ideas, are really thrilled to do something, stand somewhere for an eternity and so on. The protagonist gets married with eighteen (!) after he has known his boyfriend for two weeks or so. His boyfriend proposes to him in a field of rose petals he has decorated the apartement with. The marriage takes place in an apartement decorated in the style of Martha Stewart and with music by NSYNC playing in the background... The dialogue and the characters sometimes felt like lifted from one of those atrocious American TV-serials like "Dawson's Creek". All this really flaws the book in my opinion. Why is there no real variety in the gay characters? Why isn't there a gay character who is like Nikki's boyfriend or Joey?
Well, after all, I still can recommend reading this book because of all the information and the positive feeling about being gay it brings across. And if you want think positive, just think that this book at least gives you an impression of how you don't want to do certain things. A good companion to this book are Jay Quinn's "Metes and Bounds" or Bart Yates' "Leave Myself Behind" because of their different perspective and because they includes some of the aspects this book here lacks
