Book Description
With "a cunning mind for crime fiction" (New York Times Book Review), Anthony Award-nominated Michael McGarrity ratchets up the stakes in his novel of a vengeful killer with an unspeakable agenda: offing people with ties to the criminal justice system. Next on the list: Santa Fe Police Chief Kevin Kerney, his wife, Lieutenant Colonel Sara Brannon, and their unborn son.

i'm kinda wondering............2006-05-31
if several of the later kevin kerney series were actually written by mr. mcgarrity. because judging from the very first to the fifth, then gradually the series suffered a slow but steady decline. the writings have also become more and more blanded in the middle and rushed in the end. maybe mcgarrity has been using his son as his ghost writer behind the scene? is there any possibility? like 'big gamble' is almost so obviously proved that some goofy ghost writing really was going behind. this one also read like porky's pizza that tasted quite blanded. when writers become too old, usually their sons or daughters would become the ghost writers, like clive cussler using his son to co-write by feeding him a storyline but left the most writing part to his son . i've noticed that in mcgarrity's earlier novels still with hand drawn new mexico maps, the map drawer, noel mcgarrity, might be doing the writing for the older mcgarrity now. am i right or wrong?
Formula Writing.......2004-12-28
After about one fourth of the way into this book I began skimming pages and still easily followed the plot. The author has written some fairly decent books but this is not one of them. This book is evidence of formula writing at its worst. The plot is too ambitious with gratitious carnage - cumbersome transition - characters not well developed.
So-so McGarrity, But Always a Superior Mystery.......2004-09-16
I've been an avid reader of McGarrity's Kevin Kerney police novels since the first, because he is a highly skilled writer, the plots move quickly and smoothly, the characters are quirky and intuitive, Chief Kerney is very empathetic, and the scenic descriptions take me right back to New Mexico state. Despite the provocations of sociopathic killers, Kerney always remains laconic and cool, in control of his emotions and, seemingly, the events. For good or ill in its attractiveness to the reader, the author never ratchets terror high, even when a killer stewed in revenge, as here, intends it.
My total enjoyment of this story had only two blemishes. Midway through, the author mistakenly let us see how the murderer is planting a false trail (rather than let us make that chilling conclusion). Rather than a clever twist in the plot, this view quite took the rising suspense out of the next 50 pages for me. (Perhaps McGarrity should be excused, in view of the subsequent shocking twist he gives to the "false" suspect.) Second, the ending was too rushed, both as a scene and relative to the intricate build up to it. The climax was too vaguely described, leaving me in doubt as to who had their finger on the final trigger. Minor disappointments are that we never do find out all the ways in which the killer got his incredibly detailed info on his targets; and Kerney allows his wife, Sara Brannon, a military policewoman, to insist on committing a great breakdown in discipline, leading to a more dangerous final confrontation.
Thankfully, this is the first time McGarrity has used the plot device--targeting and terrorizing the hero's family--that, repeated, turned me right off of later Cornwall and Patterson mystery series. I'd not like to lose McGarrity, too. The art on recent covers is too generic, urban even, which the horse-loving rancher/policeman Kerney is not at all about; the art should return to New Mexican scenes of the earlier and strongly atmospheric books, please.
Best 'who-done-it' in the series.......2004-05-26
Even though this novel is a stand alone book within the Kevin Kerney series of novels, it would probably help to read a few of the others first, only to flesh out some background history on some of the characters.
I think that's beneficial only because the murders that plague Santa Fe, NM and Kevin Kerney's department hits close to home. First a seemingly random, yet planned murder of a gay attorney in town has the community and the police baffled. As the story progresses and the body count increases, it soon becomes evident that the murderer is singling out and sending a very private yet cryptic message to Kerney.
Kerney then realizes that his pregnant wife, and his estranged son may also be targets, and the clues are vague at best. This is no ordinary killer, this one has spent a lot of time crafting his trade and will have the reader guessing for quite sometime on who's next and where we are going.
That's the testament to this novel. You can really empathize with Kerney as he begins to feel helpless for not only himself but those few remaining close to him. The novel does a great job in pacing the action and guesswork, and you'd be surprised how fluid it moves along, all the while the bodies start stacking up.
The only issue I had that prevented me from assigning 5 stars was the very last chapter. After the climax, which was a little short after such a wonderful buildup, the last chapter jumped the reader a few weeks forward and everything was back to normal...too quickly and done within only a few brief pages.
Delightfully surprised!.......2004-02-05
I had never heard of Michael McGarrity, and found the cover and the plot summary both a bit off-putting, and wasn't expecting to like this book. I was delightfully surprised to discover that unlike many writers in the murder, mayhem and mystery genre, McGarrity didn't slipslide at all into the murky depths of horrifying psychotic evil, gratuitous garbage-language,-sex,-blood,-gore and cruelty, and wallow there for several hundred pages.
He wrote a book about a psychotic killer, yes, but he didn't allow his writing to sink to the level of the killer. It's a very good book with breadth and depth even with a "less-is-more" control over the verbiage, which I like and respect. His story line and characters are engaging. The mystery is compellingly presented. I finished it and rushed to my nearest bookstore to buy all the other Mike McGarrity murder, mayhem and mystery books and have since read them and found them as engaging as Everybody Dies! Keep on writing, Mr. McGarrity!

Customer Reviews:
If your marriage is worth a million dollars, then 12.95 is easily AFFORDABLE!.......2007-08-30
What Kenn Reese has to say in his book is ground breaking. He doesn't overwhelm the reader with psychology mumbo jumbo; instead he provides a summarized, direct, and to-the-point message using thousands of marital interviews over many years of compiled data.
Children are Born and Marriages Die, tells you what you need to know without any fluff. It's a smaller book, and is easy for you and your spouse to pick up and read without being overwhelmed or intimidated. Kenn also provides his readers with tools to help resolve arguments, as well as a "Self Assesment" evaluation to determine if the pre-marital relationship is right where you want it. There are so many things in the book that I think will save a lot of people future grief if they just read the simple facts. If you and your spouse both read this book, i'm sure it would do wonders for your relationship. It reminds you of the day you took your vows. The day you promised to love, to hold, and to cherish.. anything and everything. This book reminds you to work together as a UNIT, as partners, as lovers once again. And for new couples, it PREPARES you for what is to come, and what to avoid. This book hits it right on the money, and appeals to all couples, no matter what stage your relationship. New, unsure? Good? Bad? UGLY?
Kenn would tell you to avoid the big "D".
I also found the book to have some really fun and humorous stories to keep things well rounded and not "boring" or stale. While there are so many things to take with you from this book... remember to PUT EACH OTHER FIRST, improve on your own flaws, and CONTINUE to do the fun and wonderful things you did as a young married couple, even when you have kids. As an example? Kenn Reese made it clear...
You CAN live in a world where Children are Born and Marriages LIVE.

loved to pieces.......2006-06-19
My son loved this book from a very early age, unfortunately to pieces. Now at 20 months old, he has found all the pieces from the bottom of the book bin and STILL wants to read it. The front and back cover are ripped off, the little elephant which pulls out and compares in size to the other animals is missing, the ear of momma elephant is missing and he's torn off momma's face... AND he STILL wants to read it. He was able to learn all the animals quickly in part because of the high-contrast colors. I'm now shopping for another copy. As a parent I like the bright colors, the various animals to help him learn their names and sounds. We can easily point to the animals and count how many are on the pages. And of course comparing the size of the baby elephant to the animals and its mommy.

Great fun for babies!.......2002-03-16
The vivid colors and fun, simple pictures really hold a baby's attention. It's fun to compare the lion with the other "critters" and to make funny animal sounds along with the story. The lion, which is attached to the book with a ribbon, is a really great idea, because you can move the lion from page to page.

Simple & Cute.......2006-05-22
We've been reading to my daughter since she was two months old. It took a few weeks for her to show any interest at all, but now (at 4 months) she has a few books she enjoys. This isn't her favorite but she does like it, and we read it last every night before bedtime. The illustrations are clear and simple with bright colors. The text is pretty simple, too. I'd definitely recommend this one as a starter book.
my toddler's new favorite.......2001-08-02
As you can tell from the cover, this book has really cute, brightly colored illustrations that children prefer. The last page has a flap in the shape of a tree with the sleepy bear hidden behind. Kids love to open the flap and find the bear. Given the subject matter, I read it to my child at night, but she likes to "read" it all the time.

This is the ultimate book of the Petsitter's Club!.......2002-05-24
I am a first-grader, almost ready to go into second grade. I liked this book because it had one of my favorite dogs and I liked the people in the book. My favorite characters are Matthew and Sam. I think you should read this book because it is interesting and the beginning, middle, and end are very good! This was my first chapter book, and I read it all by myself!
Trixie and the Cyber Pet.......2000-06-01
The book was one of the Petsitters Club series and I like thewhole series. I thought this was a very good book. Everyone shouldread it because if you like dogs and if you like gigapets, you'll like this story a lot. The characters made me laugh. I learned that dogs are smarter than you think they are. I did a book report on this book and got an A+ on it.

Super Reader.......2007-09-28
Bad.
That would about sum this up. The majority of the writing in this book is not competent, let alone publishable. That is even publishable in a game supplement sort of sense. The names of the guilty are not on each story, but I suspect one of the writers may be more competent than the rest.
The ideas or plots for the stories are generally decent enough, barring the odd complete clone, and half a bonus point for the stuff at the back. This includes some newspaper report mockups, and some actual reports of real-life heroism, which was a nice touch.

Super powered conflict here.
There are three editors/authors listed on this book. If they are taking it in turns to write stories here it wouldn't surprise me. However, it looks like only one of them can write at all, so far, if that is the case.
Seeing it doesn't list who is who, I just picked the first one to use.

Rejoice, ye multitudes. The Cyber Age is upon thee........2000-11-12
Have you ever tried to find superhero based novels that are the author's creation? That aren't based on anything you see on the comic books stands? Well then look no further. Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Cyber Age. With a constantly changing website, gorgeous artwork, and some damn friggin' good stories, Cyber Age Adventures is definately one of the few good works of superhero fiction out there. But this is a review on the book. =) Although I didn't find the three chapter method to be necessary, these stories were originally posted as a 3-part story with the website/fan mail. But the flow of each one is still very well done. Each hero has his or her flaws that make him or her just a little bit more human in nature. And the use of the super abilties in new and interesting ways make it for an even more interesting read. For superhero fans out there, I'd recommend this in a heart beat. For those that like superheroes, but don't want to buy monthly, overpriced comics, then grab this book while you can.
A fascinating and original new look at the genre........2000-04-14
I checked this out on a lark, in the mood for something light and harmless. Instead I found an absorbing series of stories about a diverse cast of characters. It's superheroes for grownups, superheroes who have problems with their parents or their friends or their jobs or their car payments that are as real, and sometimes more dangerous, than their problems with the supervillain of the week.
I was really impressed with this anthology. The authors show a lot of talent and a lot of promise, and they've made a credible attempt to make the superhero genre into a literary experience -- without sacrificing innovating new powers or exciting fight scenes. It's definitely worth a look.
The Hero Within..........2000-04-13
True heroism is not about flying at the speed of sound or walloping the bad guys with expert martial arts ease or blasting through concrete with fist-propelled laser beams. No, true heroism comes from within, and the 'within' is all-too-human... all-too-real. This is what CyberAge never fails to tap into: the human reality, the power we all have and that we can all grasp onto, if only we choose to do so. The fantasy of these stories is undeniable, but the gritty realism hidden beneath is what makes them breathe, what makes them move... what makes them important. A must read!

Customer Reviews:
Sheer delight!.......2006-10-26
Frank Fradella's short story collection was a neverending array of wonderment from the first story to the last. In turns, heart-warming, bittersweet, romantic, sexy, giggle-worthy, and tear-jerking, SPEAKING IN TONGUES has something for everyone.
The book is filled with rich imagery and language that just caresses the synapses!
Fradella also blends cultures and genres in a seamless mesh of tremendous storytelling! His center section called "A Thousand Words" turns that old adage into truth as he creates stories of exactly one thousand words to narrate a picture. And as always, his love for superheroes weaves throughout. But Fradella's superheroes are more than just buff guys in spandex; they are men and women, they are sensitive, complex creatures, many of whom take their powers not from some far-flung planet or bizarre scientific accident, but from their own inner strengths and through the influence of the Old Gods. It was a departure from the superhero "norm" that I found truly delightful!
All in all, SPEAKING IN TONGUES was a delicious feast for the senses that left me sighing as I closed the cover on the last page.
Well done! I am ready for more from New Babel Books!
