Like Marcia Muller, Sue Grafton, and Sara Paretsky, Linda Barnes deserves credit for usurping the male dominance over American private-eye fiction in the 1970s and '80s. Her six-foot-tall, redheaded Boston snoop and part-time cabbie, Carlotta Carlyle, started out (in 1987's A Trouble of Fools) as a savvy, self-reliant former cop whose potential to become Sam Spade in a skirt was mitigated by her emotional sensitivity and resistance to brash risk-taking. More than two decades later, Carlotta shows herself to be as compelling and credible as ever--if a bit wiser--in Deep Pockets.

"Look, I made a mistake. I slept with a student," concedes Wilson Chaney, an African-American professor at Harvard Medical School, as he hires Carlotta to find and foil the person responsible for blackmailing him with love letters he'd sent to Denali Brinkman, a startlingly attractive freshman rowing champ who evidently committed both suicide and arson at a Charles River boathouse. Carlotta thinks to curtail this squeeze by unearthing information damaging to the extortionist. But when the suspect turns out to be another of Denali's boyfriends, 30-year-old ex-con Benjy Dowling, and then Dowling perishes in a hit-and-run involving Chaney's van, the PI must reassess both her tactics and assumptions about this investigation. Is her client, already afraid of losing his job over an ill-advised intimacy, now being framed for murder, perhaps by another one of Dowling's blackmail targets? Could Chaney's troubles be traced to a rival or enemy at Harvard? Or to his wealthy, pregnancy-obsessed wife? Or maybe to his cutting-edge research into drug treatments for attention-deficit disorder? As Carlotta confronts the case's multiplying puzzles, she wonders whether there are answers to be found in Denali's sketchy past--answers that could not only clear Chaney, but protect this gutsy gumheel from an increasingly dangerous adversary.

Carlotta's distractions in Deep Pockets are numerous, from her ebbing relationship with a black FBI agent to her concern over the half-dressing habits of her fast-developing "little sister," Paolina. Yet she rarely misses a clue--except, of course, when it adds to the story's tensions. Barnes fails to fully explain a couple of dramatic plot turns in this 10th Carlotta Carlyle novel (after The Big Dig), and you needn't boast a Harvard sheepskin to figure out her tale's principal twist well in advance of its conclusion; however, those faults are outweighed by one's delight in seeing the pertinacious Ms Carlyle again get her man without entirely losing her femininity. --J. Kingston Pierce

Book Description

Harvard professor Wilson Chaney's position in life is hanging by a thread; his marriage, his reputation, not to mention his tenure at Harvard are in the hands of a blackmailer, someone threatening to sell Chaney's secrets at very high prices. His enviable life could disappear into thin air should the blackmailer's evidence - proof of his affair with a young student - become public knowledge. So he hires Boston private investigator Carlotta Carlyle to track down the blackmailer and put a stop to the scheme. Can she do it? Of course, but should she? The professor doesn't inspire much loyalty-after all, he did commit adultery with one of his own students-but Carlotta agrees. Digging into the case, nosing around Harvard and the possible suspects from the rest of Dr. Chaney's life, she uncovers a suspicious death as part of the backstory to Dr. Chaney's situation. Suddenly Carlotta's sixth sense is telling her the case might be more complicated-and more dangerous-than it first seemed. Fresh from the success of The Big Dig, the masterful Linda Barnes delivers a bold and engaging novel infused with the deft touch and intricate suspense that have become her trademarks.

5 out of 5 stars Barnes just keeps getting better and better.......2006-10-24

I am baffled as to why Linda Barnes is not at the top of every mystery lover's list. Her character, Carlotta Carlyle, is like a blend of Kinsey Millhone and Stephanie Plum -- she's got chutzpah when it's needed, but there are some soft edges to her, too. Barnes' stories are impeccably plotted with just enough twists and turns to keep you guessing until the end. And her writing is smooth and fresh.

"Deep Pockets," the tenth in the series, is as complete a mystery package as anyone could hope for. All the quirky characters from previous novels (Leroy, Paolina, Sam, Roz, and more) make their appearances, and we get to see Carlotta continue to wrestle with her never-ending attraction to Sam. The relationship between Carlotta and her adopted little sister, Paolina, also matures. I appreciate how Barnes keeps these relationships growing and changing instead of letting them stagnate as mere backdrops to the storyline.

If you like Grafton, Paretsky, Muller, or Dunlap, try Barnes. You'll love her.

4 out of 5 stars Boy Carlotta knows how to find trouble...or it finds her..........2006-03-22

CArlotta has a mouth on her. A big mouth, and an attitude to match. Even though I am not crazy about Barnes tendency towards foul language, I guess it comes with the territory. There are only a couple of writers I will bother with who use this type of language in a mystery, and at least with Barnes, she doesn't have it every other sentence, or use the language to cover up for a bad plot or characterization.

Barnes books have interesting and engaging characters in it to say the least. This time Carlotta gets hired by a Harvard professor who did what they often do (professors...), get involved with one of their students. And he didn't even bother to make it a grad student. Undergrads are strictly prohibited even within the universities own moral systems...really, really frowned upon.

The girl he gets involved with dies in a questionable fire. A lot of the information Carlotta finds out about the girl makes her more intriguing then a lot of victims and you almost wish Barnes had spent more time developing this particular character. But most of the time and plot is spent with the professor, his batty wife, and those working with him in bioengineering (a new area of very questionable ethics for mystery writers to delve into). Then we find out the girl is not exactly who we were lead to believe she was...but that's telling.

Carlotta meets up with her old boyfriend, who is, then isn't in the mafia. Can't seem to make up his mind. That's okay...she can't make up her mind about him either. The story is pretty good. Stirs in the pot of bioethics and educational ethics that I am deeply involved in so it got my attention right away.

3 out of 5 stars Fun, Not Fabulous.......2005-11-08

Following on "The Big Dig," this latest entry in the Carlotta Carlyle series seems a bit flat, a bit contrived. Nevertheless, it's Carlotta, so we have to love it!

The plot concerns a Harvard professor who is being blackmailed after having an affair with a student who later killed herself. It seems straightforward, and Carlotta identifies the blackmailer in fairly short order. But that only begins the ever-deepening mystery of who is dead and who isn't, what the professor really knows and why, and the much more serious plot that lies beneath the blackmailing.

The story is good, but there is a curious lack of reality in here, as we only HEAR about the usual characters: Gloria, Roz, Paolina. They are almost added as afterthoughts, like a pinch of salt. I found that very strange and unsettling, having read every book in the series. We do get a rare and satisfying glimpse of on-again, off-again beau Sam, but not enough to really add to the mix.

I recommend this book to all Linda Barnes fans. If this is your first introduction to the author, I'd go for one of the previous books, even The Big Dig, as a better look at Carlotta and who she is.

4 out of 5 stars Diverting if not earthshattering.......2005-09-16

Carlotta Carlyle has been Linda Barnes' female private eye main character for almost two decades now. The tall (6'1") redheaded former cop and part-time cabbie is a well-liked character in private eye fiction, and in this latest outing she's hired to figure out who's trying to blackmail a Harvard professor over his affair with a student, and of course stop the blackmailers once she finds out who they are.

There are the usual Carlotta sideplots: Roz, the very alternative upstairs tenant/assistant with tattoos, weird boyfriends, and a spacy attitude towards everything; Sam, the mafia boyfriend she can't seem to get rid of; Paolina, her little "sister" who's grown up waaaaay too fast and dresses like she's grown up even more, etc. They're all entertaining, and there's an interesting twist to the story that I will confess I didn't see coming. I enjoyed the book and would recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars An affair, murder and deception.......2005-02-15

Carlotta Carlyle, PI and sometimes cab driver, notices someone following her throughout Harvard Square. She hides and then confronts him. He swears he wasn't going to hurt her. He says he was trying to work up the courage to talk to her. He wants to hire her.

"His friend" is being blackmailed. He paid once and now they're asking for more. He finally admits that he, not his friend, had an affair with freshman student Denali Brinkman. He is a tenured Harvard Professor Wilson Chaney. If his affair is made public, it will ruin his career. He wants Carlotta to uncover the identity of his blackmailer so he can then persuade him to stop.

When Carlotta starts digging, she finds Denali recently committed suicide in a fire in the boathouse at Harvard. She was a rower. She tries to interview Denali's roommate and an ex-boyfriend. The more she digs, the more she questions everything her client has told her. Plus she finds more pieces to investigate the deeper she gets.

Plus Carlotta is dating Leon, an FBI agent she met on her last job. Carlotta isn't sure where this relationship is going. She doesn't have much time to devote to it either due to her investigation.

I really like Carlotta. She is a great PI. I don't feel that she puts herself in dangerous situations without the proper tools like in many mysteries. This is very believable. I like the way that she is able to find out the needed information without just calling someone else to find out everything. Her roommate is a great asset as well.

I also like the Boston setting for this series. The author has done a great job of creating the characters and location in the book. I highly recommend this book.

Book Description

In this landmark book, Neil Vidmar looks beyond the common perceptions of medical malpractice litigation and finds a system that is fair, impartial, and intelligent. Firmly grounded in a wealth of empirical data, the author presents a fresh look at a civil jury system that has been maligned as out-of-touch, capricious, and disposed to awarding exorbitant, unjustified amounts to plaintiffs whenever they have the opportunity. In an era when tort reform is high on the congressional agenda, Medical Malpractice and the American Jury is almost alone in voicing reason and fact.
Written in a thoroughly inviting, jargon-free style, Medical Malpractice and the American Jury places those cases that go to trial in the broader context of litigation, noting that only about ten percent of malpractice cases ever result in trials. Of those that do go to trial, the author notes, more than two out of three cases are decided in the doctor's favor--repudiating the view that jurors are inherently biased against doctors and are motivated more by sympathy for the plaintiff than by the facts of the case.
Neil Vidmar comprehensively addresses all the claims that have been leveled against the performance of malpractice juries. For example, he compares actual jury decisions on negligence with neutral physicians' ratings of whether negligence occurred in the medical treatment and finds a remarkable consistency--repudiating the view that jurors are unable to understand experts or uncritically defer to their opinion.
"Medical Malpractice and the American Jury is quite simply the most compelling, comprehensive examination of the American jury system yet written. It brings reason and fact to the debate in a way that puts the lie to the many myths surrounding medical negligence cases. For anyone genuinely interested in just solutions, this book should be required reading. To act in ignorance of its findings invites disaster." --Trial
"For anyone really interested in the evidence about the daily grind of the courthouse mill, Neil Vidmar's Medical Malpractice and the American Jury is a good place to start." --Washington Post Book World
Neil Vidmar is Professor of Social Science and Law, Duke Law School, and Professor of Psychology, Duke University.

Finally some empirical truth on this issue: rich insurance companies playing doctors and lawyers against each other like pawns. The real losers are the patients.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Pretty much useless as field/pocket guide.......2005-05-04

I bough this pocket book and haven't found useful even once. In Internet age, this book renders itself pretty much useless. The book mainly has one pages with color photo of one of the deep sky objects and a very dry short description on the other page. That's pretty much about it. You can find all these photos on Internet in much better resolution or in the software like TheSky just by clicking on object. The accompanied description is just dry numerical tid-bits printed in font that discourages reading it. There are no constellation maps. You can find much better quality and interesting history, significance and field notes on Internet. May be this is not the authors fault. The description is supposed to be limited to that tiny page, what else they can do?

5 out of 5 stars Stunning Images of Deep Space.......2005-03-14

If you have ever wanted to know the difference between a barred spiral galaxy and an irregular galaxy, this is the book for you.

Beautiful photographs of these galaxies, and so much more, await you in this wonderful little book. It has served as a reference for me for several years now. Even with oodles more Hubble shots available these days, this book is still not dated.

Each photo is given a description as to type of deep-sky object it is (a spirial galaxy or an emission nebula, for instance), light years distance away from us, where in space it is located and a little data about the nature of itself.

Andromeda, the Pleiades, the Ring Nebula and much more await you in this little pocket book by the National Audubon Society.

Much recommended for the "space nut"!

5 out of 5 stars A superb picture book of the cosmos........1998-10-20

Easy to read and even easier to look at, this little book is a giant. The photos are beautiful and their full-bleed format makes them look like little windows to the universe. If it's photos of the deep-sky objects you want, this book is the perfect place to start.

5 out of 5 stars Deep Space Pocket Space Guide.......2006-06-13

This should be on all school's book lists. This is the second book that my children have read from this series and has proved invaluable for their school projects. Even their teacher wants a copy! Informative, easy to read without being childish - fantastic!

5 out of 5 stars Deep Space by Steve Whitfield.......2006-06-08

The most fascinating thing about this book and, indeed, this series of books from Apogee, is there access to NASA's records. Deep space is an endlessly interesting subject; and this particular book is quite well done. Whitfield knew what to put in and what to leave out in order to maintain the flow.

          Book Description

Big Rockets, Deep Pockets is a fanciful roman 'a clef ramble through the space age, highlighting some of the characters and adventures that took place not only in space but at suppliers facilities across the nation. From the Oklahoma redneck welder Grady Green, whose competitors believe to be a crafty and devious manipulator but must respect, if not his methods, the results they achieve as president and CEO of Tulsa Fabricators, to Cray Reynolds, young rodeo cowboy and his partner Fess, whom Grady subsidizes illicitly but unknown to them, by misapropriation of Government funds. Such activities worry Milli Angeli, Grady's beautiful Girl Friday whose job it is to manage the technical and legal details that Grady chooses to ignore. Milli's leisure time activity is membership in and exclusive nudist resort. And Ben Okara, decorated Nisei war veteran, now supervisor of on-site inspection for Space Air Corporation. Avoiding conflict of interest, the friendship between Grady and Ben is an anomaly to say the least. We also meet Hans Frederick, President of Tech Nitro Technology (TNT), Ben's closest and most trusted friend. Hans has a capricious side, he is also owner of a bar employing sixty scantily clad girls.

              Book Description

Sun-haired maiden Cindy Ellis is on her way to Tuba City to train a horse for a friend. But when she meets an old woman along the way, she begins a journey to a world she never imagined. A world torn apart by poverty and sorrow. A world the old woman-the Godmother-watches over. And with her spindle in hand, she spins a web of love-so beautiful, so magical...

2 out of 5 stars It may be PC to like this book, but I don't........2002-03-13

Two gripes about _The Godmother's Web_:

              (1) Cindy must be the dimmest heroine I've seen in a long time. First of all, what on earth does she see in Raydir? He only appreciates her when she's gone. Second, and more importantly, why must she spend chapters upon chapters upon chapters NOT realizing that Grandma Webster is supernatural? Cindy has met a real-life fairy godmother; it's not like she's never seen magic before. And here she is, traveling with a little old lady who nonetheless has boundless energy and physical fitness, whom everyone in the entire Southwest seems to know personally, and who has food that regenerates itself. After a hundred pages of this, you'd think it would have dawned on Cindy that Grandma is a little bit more than the average nursing-home escapee.

(2)...In _The Godmother_, though the characters frequently break into political rants, the speeches take a back seat to the story, but this book seems to be one long political speech about the plight of the Hopi and the Navajo. It doesn't matter how worthy the cause is; it doesn't matter whether you agree with her views or not. I agree with almost everything she says, and yet I don't appreciate being sledgehammered with a moral when I sit down in my chair looking for a good story. There are shining moments of good story--my favorite is the weaving scene, where Grandma manages to get a feuding family to see each other's worth again--but overall this reads more like a political tract. Gimme a break.

5 out of 5 stars In Peace Let It Be Finished.......2001-05-24

"The Godmother's Web" is the third in a series of godmother novels penned by Elizabeth Scarborough. Cindy Ellis, who appeared in the original "Godmother", has become a bit disenchanted with her relationship to Raydir Quantrill, the king of Alloy Rock. When Raydir leaves for a road trip Cindy decides she needs some time to think things out and tacks a job training a trail horse by riding it through the wilder parts of Arizona.

Cindy's first indication that the trip was not going to go according to plan was when she picked up an older American Indian woman whom everyone called Grandmother. Shortly thereafter, Cindy discovers that her hitchhiker had a slightly different voyage in mind and had no intention of letting Cindy get rid of her easily. Grandmother seems to be concerned about the pain and anger caused among the Hopi and Navaho by a recent land partition. By no means a political activist, Grandmother is intent on providing wisdom to her many grandchildren.

Among her extended family we will find Carl Loloma, a drug counselor, his daughter Sela, and her boyfriend Wiley Smiley. Also playing major parts are Michael Blackgoat, on a quest for a horse, Dr. Maria Chee, who has come back to the reservation to help her people, and Alice and Martha Tsosie, two sisters who are split over how to deal with land partition.

I shouldn't leave out an ill-intentioned Navaho witch, several representatives of a power company who intend to take advantage of the political situation to advance their own cause, and some other unpleasant `bad guys.' Confronted with inter-tribal anger and misunderstanding, horse theft, witchcraft and assassination, Grandmother has her work cut out for her.

Not only does Scarborough write one of her best tales ever; she shows a grasp of Hopi and Navaho culture that is truly astounding. She weaves legend, myth, culture and politics into the story without missing a step and never lets the story get bogged down by all the details. I learnt as much about these to American Indian cultures in a book intended for entertainment as I have reading books on the same subject. Because of this excellent mix of story and cross-cultural information I would recommend "The Godmother's Web" for everyone, young and old, short and tall.

5 out of 5 stars certainly a joy to read.......2000-02-03

this book was a wonderful way to escape into the world of the native americans and they problems they have faced in the past and are facing now in the present and future. The langauge mrs. scarborough uses is very humouristic and keeps your hooked. I can certainly recommmend this book. For the absolute experience you should really read the other 2 books about the fairy godmothers.

              5 out of 5 stars fantasy & very respectful re-telling of Hopi/Navaho stories.......1999-04-19

Horse, Cindy(rella), Hopi and Navaho stories, and another wonderful Godmother, masterfully worked into a modern fantasy that has been WONDERFUL to read!

5 out of 5 stars Great story with great writing, characters and location!.......1999-04-18

Ms.Scarborough again shows her talent for weaving so many apparently unrelated lives into one wonderful united tale. This third book in The Godmother trilogy takes place in modern day Southwest American Indian reservations and is full of their history, fables, and way of life past and present. I came away from this book more knowledgeable and that made this book an even better read. As in her previous books, the writing is clean, smooth and the characters are well written. I'm sad this trilogy has ended!
