      Book Description

An exploration of how LSD influences imagination and the creative process.

      • Based on the results of one of the longest clinical studies of LSD that took place between 1954 and 1962, before LSD was illegal.

      • Includes personal reports, artwork, and poetry from the original sessions as testimony of the impact of LSD on the creative process.

In 1954 a Los Angeles psychiatrist began experimenting with a then new chemical discovery known as LSD-25. Over an eight-year period Dr. Oscar Janiger gave LSD-25 to more than 950 men and women, ranging in age from 18 to 81 and coming from all walks of life. The data collected by the author during those trials and from follow-up studies done 40 years later is now available here for the first time, along with the authors' examination of LSD's ramifications on creativity, imagination, and spirituality.

In this book Marlene Dobkin de Rios, a medical anthropologist who has studied the use of hallucinogens in tribal and third world societies, considers the spiritual implications of these findings in comparison with indigenous groups that employ psychoactive substances in their religious ceremonies. The book also examines the nature of the creative process as influenced by psychedelics and provides artwork and poetry from the original experiment sessions, allowing the reader to personally witness LSD's impact on creativity. The studies recounted in LSD, Spirituality, and the Creative Process depict an important moment in the history of consciousness and reveal the psychic unity of humanity.

This is a great book. Not only doest it the 'core characters' of an acid trip, the book also includes first hand accounts from the subjects in Dr. Janiger's LSD experiments. There is sections of poetry and art created by subject on LSD. Its a pretty awesome book. :)

        Book Description

Currently, advanced art education is in the process of developing (doctorate or PhD) research programs throughout Europe. Therefore, it seems to us urgent to explore what the term research actually means in the topical practice of art. After all, research as such is often understood as a method stemming from the alpha, beta or gamma sciences directed towards knowledge production and the development of a certain scientific domain. How is artistic research connected with those types of scientific research, taking into account that the artistic domain so far has tended to continually exceed the parameters of knowledge management?

One could claim that the artistic field comprises the hermeneutic question of the humanities, the experimental method of the sciences, and the societal commitment of the social sciences. Will that knowledge influence the domain, the methodology, and the outcome of artistic research? Another major topic concerns not only the specificity of the object of knowledge of artistic research but above all whether and how artistic research and its institutional programs will influence topical visual art, its artworks and its exhibitions.

These complex problematics with their various points of view and management models are mapped out through the contributions of theorists, curators, and institutions, from Belgium, France, Great-Britain, Italy, The Netherlands, Finland, Germany, and Sweden. May these contributions be a constructive impetus for a versatile debate which may influence the future role of advanced art institutions and the position of artistic research in the next decade.

            Book Description

Improvised Dialogues is the first social-scientific study of Chicago improv theater. It focuses on the collaborative verbal creativity that improvising actors use to generate their unscripted dialogues. The author spent two years as a performer, and videotaped 15 different Chicago theater groups--both live performances and rehearsals--resulting in almost 50 hours of performance data. To analyze these dialogues, the book presents the theory of collaborative emergence, which focuses on how different pre-existing structures guide improvisation, and how actors use dialogue to jointly create a novel, dramatically coherent performance. Although the dialogue is not scripted, a highly structured performance emerges. Because these elements of improvisation are present in all linguistic interaction, the theory shows how these dialogues are relevant to all researchers who study verbal performance. Improvised Dialogues is thus positioned at the intersection of several fields, each of which includes a tradition of research on improvisation and conversation. In sociology, researchers such as conversation analysts have long studied how participants in interaction creatively produce an orderly dialogue. In folkloristics and linguistic anthropology, researchers have begun to emphasize the importance of creativity in performance. In psychology, contemporary creativity theory has begun to take account of interactional and social factors influencing creativity. All of these fields study collaborative, interactive craetivity; no single performer controls the group, but each performer is subtly influenced by the actions of the others.

Ettema and Whitney have collected essays that study the ways in which the organizational life of mass media limit, shape, and encourage the creativity of individuals within them. Commercial demands, the values of people within the industry, ideas of product image, and the forces that form broadcast news are among the subjects discussed.

'Ettema and Whitney have edited an interesting, often provocative collection whose unifying theme...represents an important application of organization theory to the communication process.' -- Journal of Communication, Spring 1983

                    Book Description

Description: "Michael Roberts is the Jean Cocteau of the fashion world," wrote the celebrated New Yorker editor Tina Brown in 1997, welcoming her new fashion editor to the most prestigious magazine in the world. Having already served for many years as a style editor (The London Sunday Times, Vanity Fair) and having produced numerous illustrations, photographs, paintings, and columns of fashion criticism for various media, Roberts had already had his name coupled with Cocteau's, but his striking visual style is collected here for the first time. From evocative pen-and-ink sketches to acrylic paintings to intensely witty New Yorker covers created from cut paper, these works capture the fads, foibles, and fashionability of our times. Anna Wintour, editor-in-chief of American Vogue, in her introduction to "this beautiful book" calls them "fiendishly accurate satire." And the shoe guru Manolo Blahnik writes, "His drawings grasp fashion moments like a photo could never do." That a major part of the book was created through the painstaking method of paper collage especially appeals to the internationally famed fashion designer John Galliano. He writes, "I have avidly collected his work, along with doing my own collages, for years, and I am honored to be a part of this book." --Grace Coddington

                    A Modern Master

I had no idea who Michael Roberts was when I came across this book, which idly adorned a naked shelf in the now historic Coliseum Bookstore. As I flipped through the book again and again and again I was awestruck by the sheer number of spectacular plates in one volume. I'd frame them all but wouldn't dare dissect this clothbound collector's dream. Mr. Roberts' artistic prowess is an inspiration--his bold colors, defined shapes that are chiseled as well as a body-builder's pecks, and imagery so striking it burns a place in your memory. Note the Pompeian mosaics--just mind-blowing.

I was so moved by his artistry that I purchased 2 of his earlier works, The Jungle ABC and Mumbo Jumbo, The Creepy ABC. How wonderful to discover the talent, wit and verse contained in these treasures for new readers--what a fun way to learn!

Thank you Michael Roberts for these treasures, I anxiously await your future masterpieces.

A beautiful book beautifully produced, laid out and printed. If you are looking at this review you know who Michael is and what you're buying, so all I can say is that you won't be disapointed, just hit your "buy now with one click!" button.

                    Book Description

Manolo Blahník's shoes inspire fanatical devotion. "Manolo Blahník's shoes are as good as sex," Madonna has said. "And they last longer." Diane Von Furstenberg has more than eighty pairs; Paloma Picasso has been a fan since she was fourteen; Bianca Jagger and Kate Moss, to name just a few, are fellow addicts. For three decades, Blahník's sense of the theatrical wedded to the finest materials and superlative craftsmanship have held the fashion world spellbound, and his creations have graced the catwalks of great designers from Yves Saint-Laurent to Isaac Mizrahi to John Galliano.

Here, collected together for the first time, are over one hundred exquisite drawings that Blahník makes at the outset of the design process. These sketches are executed with such exuberance and deftness that they have become as sought after as the shoes themselves (they often fetch up to $15,000.00 at charity auctions). Inimitable in style, the drawings, beautifully reproduced in this book with special inks, vividly convey Blahník's unique vision. Whether it's a Grecian sandal designed for Galliano, with a snake-like strap slithering up the calf, or an emerald- and bead-fringed satin mule, the seductive attention to detail in the drawings conjures up the shoe itself.

Illuminating introductions by Anna Wintour and Michael Roberts explore why Manolo Blahník's shoes inspire such passion, and these are complemented throughout the book by the words of admirers including Suzie Menkes, Donatella Versace, and David Hockney. Michael Roberts also contributes a photographic essay showing Blahník at work in his studio, making sketches, preparing the wooden lasts, and supervising the production of his shoes at his factories in Italy. A final "scrapbook" section includes Manolo Blahník's own photographs of family, friends, and inspirational places. 150 illustrations, 120 in color.

                    4 out of 5 stars good book.......2004-11-11

The drawings in this book are amazing. I think the book would be better with photographs of the finished shoe next to each drawing. Also, the about Manolo section is too small, it could have given a longer biography.

4 out of 5 stars Great Designer, Great Layout, Great Book.......2003-12-22

Maybe I am biased because I personally love the designer, however I think this book was a great idea and very charitable of Mr. Blahnik. He gives us a look into the process which he has artfully perfected

The Spanish designer Manolo Blahnik creates the most sought-after shoes in the world. On a supermodel, a Manolo Blahnik shoe completes the perfect ensemble; placed on a pedestal, it becomes a minor art object. Colin McDowell's Manolo Blahnik attempts to capture the genuine excitement generated by Blahnik's creations. It is only partly successful. The breathy writing style never rises above fashion-magazine gossip, though the shoes themselves extend beyond fashion into art and sculpture--even metaphysical meaning. The maestro never puts a foot wrong. The finest materials, gorgeous color, and a sense of the theatrical combine in elegant originals that consistently surprise. We are told that, besides their whimsicality and sexiness, his shoes are extremely comfortable and well made.

Blahnik, "sculptor and engineer," carves each wooden last himself, normally from beech, and supervises the Italian workshops that turn his designs into treasures. His originality may be explained by his lack of formal training, but it is also clear that Blahnik's success is founded on hard work, eccentricity, and boundless energy. The book's photographs and the designer's drawings (especially effective) present the shoes as formal objects in settings replete with rose petals and fashion-photographer textures. As a glimpse into the mechanics of the world of high fashion, Manolo Blahnik works well. Readers interested in contemporary culture, celebrities, and the master's thoughts on toe cleavage and other mysteries will rave about it. --John Stevenson

                    Book Description

For many years Manolo Blahnik was the open secret of the fashion world, his shoes de rigueur for any stylish woman. Then, with Absolutely Fabulous and Sex in the City, he became world-famous to millions. In this fully authorized book, Colin McDowell uncovers the man behind the label. Blahnik claims that his decision to be a shoemaker was 'one of those accidents of life. I could just as well have been a milliner or a fashion designer'. His choices were wide but he chose shoemaking and started his highly successful business in 1972. From the beginning Blahnik's shoes reflected his style, wit and flair. He draws shoes with a verve that is uniquely his own, capturing their spirit and mood in a few deft lines. As a total perfectionist, Manolo Blahnik controls every process in the production of his shoes and still makes the last of every shoe in a collection with his own hands. He has made shoes for everyone from Bianca Jagger, Jerry Hall and Diana Ross to Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell and Victoria Beckham. His designs have been described by Madonna as 'wonderful -- they last longer than sex'. He also creates shoes for many designers including John Galliano at Christian Dior and Oscar de la Renta. It is therefore of no surprise that the word 'Manolos' has become synonymous with the finest footwear in the world. Through his informative text Colin McDowell takes us into Blahnik's factory and homes to show us his life and his work, and combined with a stunning selection of photographs reveals this ultimate fashion icon as never seen before.

... I bought this book. I have a foot fetish, shoe fascination. I make shoes. I love this man. I came away from this book feeling that this man was very shallow.

The photos were disappointing. Those of us with shoe obsessions won't be satisfied with this book. The shoes shown aren't original; the manner in which they are shown isn't either.

Perhaps I was too hungry for something as original as Manolo.

as a long time manolo aficionado, i was deeply disappointed in colin mc dowell's tribute to one of the greatest artistic geniuses of our time, manolo blanhnik. as geniuses go, blahnik's a very complicated man, and i feel that mc dowell doesn't begin to do him justice. i came away from the book wanting to know more. besides that, i don't feel the photographs and sketches were necessarily indicative of blahnik's best work.

As a woman and a fan of shoes, I'm here to tell you that you can't get any better than Manolo Blahnik. His creations are sexy, stylish, and comfortable. And thanks to Sarah Jessica Parker and "Sex & the City", they are all the rage. But there is one tiny problem...they are also VERY expensive. For those of us that can't afford to run down to Neiman Marcus and slap down $600.00 for these sexy stiletto's, there's "Manolo Blahnik" by Colin McDowell. The pictures in this book will take your breathe away. You'll find yourself salivating over everything from linen mules to toe-ring slides. The book itself is more like a work of art than a book about footwear. It's also interesting to learn how Blahnik creates these beauties.

I suggest this book for fans of Manolo or those who wish they could afford them. Beautiful book! It'll make you go out and buy a few pairs!

5 out of 5 stars Peter Schlesinger: A Renewed Appreciation after Hockney.......2006-07-23

Anyone who acts the flaneur in David Hockney's current touring exhibition DAVID HOCKNEY: PORTRAITS cannot help but encounter the many portraits and influences of Peter Schlesinger, one of Hockney's clan of admirers and students. Hockney's portraits of Schlesinger show a handsome young man with stylish dignity and a most memorable presence. All that is to say re-reading Peter Scheslinger's 'Checkered Past: A Visual Diary Of The 60's And 70's' adds credibility to the observational skills he possessed and which were nurtured by his association with Hockney.

Schlesinger was invited by Hockney to London's Slade School of Art in 1968 at a youthful age 20. Hockney favored him and imbedded him in Hockney's wide circle of acquaintances and friends living and visiting in the Notting Hill district in London. Artists of every kind, from painters and sculptors to actors, musicians, dancers, photographers, interior designers, and yes, even the hoity toity of British society were gathered around the two. Schlesinger, himself a painter and sculptor, was wise enough to see the importance of the documentation of this pregnant artistic period and kept his camera in hand, capturing this inimitable time - the 1960s and 1970s.

Schlesinger was able to address his 'portraits' in the natural surroundings of his 'models', both in England and on the European Continent. The results are casual portraits of such luminaries as Hockney himself, W. H. Auden, Christopher Isherwood, Paloma Picasso, Twiggy, Robert Mapplethorpe, Yves Saint Laurent, Manolo Blahnik, Celia Birtwell, and Rudolf Nureyev, self portraits - many of these photographs were used by Hockney as sketch ideas for his drawings and paintings.

This entertaining and art history important book contains not only fine images, but also boasts comments from Schlesinger discreetly placed throughout the book, adding to the mood of that particular time during which the photographs were made. The controversial shoe designer Manolo Blahnik opens the volume with an appropriately campy forward, which sets a fine mood for what is to come. Once thought to be merely another photomontage of the 60s and 70s, Hockney's current exhibition throws new light and importance to Peter Schlesinger's book and his artistic career. It is well worth the price. Grady Harp, July 06

                    Book Description

Diana, Princess of Wales was the world's most photographed woman during the 1980s and 90s. Her every outfit was scrutinized, criticized, admired and endlessly copied, her every fashion choice proved enormously influential. But it was only towards the end of her life that she found her own true style and the panache and confidence to flaunt it.

The shy, aristocratic nanny made some notorious early fashion faux pas. But with expert guidance from Vogue and using her own sure instincts, she developed into a demure style icon who understood the subtle power of dress. Gathering together a stable of trusted designers and photographers--Catherine Walker, Gianni Versace, Jimmy Choo, Manolo Blahnik and Mario Testino--Diana learned to use her appearance to communicate with the public, and she succeeded in winning them over utterly.

Eminent fashion authority Colin McDowell has written an engaging and sometimes moving celebration of Diana's fashion journey, drawing on exclusive interviews with her designers, advisers and confidantes. Exquisitely designed and lavishly illustrated throughout with rare and striking images, Diana Style is an intimate, evocative portrait of one of the most admired women of our times.

2 out of 5 stars Save your money.......2007-09-26

I agree with the review left by "Dressmaker": save your money and buy it used, if buy it you must. There is only one picture, a fashion drawing by Roland Klein, that doesn't appear in lots (and lots!) of other Diana fashion books. The text contains a number of glaring errors of general fact, date, and dress description that could have been easily checked. For a very minor example, the Travolta Gown was described on one page as black, and on the next, as ink blue. Shouldn't a "fashion expert" have known the color of one of Diana's most famous gowns? Many of the designer comments are also available elsewhere, in better books.

That said, the text is an interesting take on Diana's use of clothing to make a statement, and her gradual development of the style associated with her at any given period. You won't see anything new here and shouldn't believe everything you read here, either -- by a long shot. If McDowell can't get his facts right, what weight should a reader give to his opinions?

3 out of 5 stars More verbal than visual.......2007-08-25

This book, on an ever-popular topic, is not as complete or well-illustrated as other, similar books such as "Dressing Diana," "Diana, Queen of Style," or "Diana: The Secrets of Her Style." However, it is more thoughtful in its analysis of her fashions and how they changed over the years. Most such books just burble about her eternal beauty and perfection; this one acknowledges some missteps and gaucheries from time to time, while appreciating her growth and maturity.

I noticed a couple of mistakes: A reference to a pearl necklace that Diana supposedly wore on her wedding day (she didn't wear a necklace at all) and stating that Fergie's gown was made of satin, just like Diana's (Diana's was taffeta). Odd mistakes, considering all you have to do is look at the photos to check the facts.

Overall, this is a nice little book with some good observations, but if you want lots of photos, buy one of the other Diana fashion books.

                          Book Description

Michael Roberts' rich view of Sicily--its people, traditions, and landscape--permeates his photographic work far beyond his well-known work in the fashion world. Spanning two decades, Shot in Sicily traces Roberts' shifting vision of a sensual and ambiguous country. With an occasional nod to Baron Wilhelm von Gloeden's late nineteenth-century images of the Sicilian town of Taormina, and the films of Visconti and Bolognini, Roberts' sense of Sicily moves beyond conventional and touristic aesthetic categories. His camera captures the beauty of youth, crumbling temples, traditional Easter parades and the theater of daily life, and genuinely recreates the allure of Sicily. This monograph is designed by Roberts and features an epilogue/homage by designer Manolo Blahnik.
