Virginia Lanier gets the fourth adventure of her heroine, Jo Beth Sidden, off to a brisk start, and keeps up the pace with her canine trackers all the way to a thrilling conclusion in the murky interior of the Okefenokee Swamp. Jo Beth is a steel magnolia who talks as tough as she is, packs a gun, and saves her softest feelings for man's best friends. In Blind Bloodhound Justice she solves a 30-year-old crime in less time than it takes to train a posse of law enforcement officers in the fine points of handling search and rescue dogs. That process alone is worth the read, but Lanier's fans have a lot more in store for them: another confrontation with her crazed, abusive ex-husband Bubba, a continuation of her on-again off-again romance with handsome sheriff Hank Cribbs, and the miraculous recovery of a blind-from-birth bloodhound who has a special place in Jo Beth's heart. Lanier's first mystery, Death in Bloodhound Red, was published when she was 63 years old, and it won a passel of awards, including the Agatha, Macavity, and Anthony. A southern Georgia resident, she writes so knowledgeably about the Okefenokee that the reader can feel the pull of the quicksand and the sting of the chiggers, and while her heroine is a bit too sharp-tongued and belligerent to be particularly lovable, her canine characters are totally captivating. --Jane Adams

Book Description

Legion of fans will cheer the return of wisecracking sleuth Jo Beth Sidden and her remarkable canine pals in Blind Bloodhound Justice, the fourth installment in Virginia Lanier's award-winning mystery series. In Blind Bloodhound Justice, Lanier gives readers what they have come to expect - a masterful combination of personal experience, authentic southern charm, unforgettable characters along with a healthy dose of adventure.

What do you do when you're trying to forget about the fact that it's been three months, six days, and five hours since you quit smoking, that there's no significant man in your life except your homicidal ex-husband Bubba, and that it's 35 degrees, a temperature most Georgians never have to contend with? Well, if you're anything like Jo Beth Sidden, the toughest breed of Georgia Peach, you get yourself mixed up in some crazy adventure, hop in your van with your trusty bloodhound sidekick and start nosing around.

Jo Beth's latest pursuit takes her back 30 years when she's asked by the sheriff to "quietly" look into one of the town's most crimes ghost stories - the kidnapping and murder of a nanny and child. It seems that the man convicted of the murders has been bounced out of the big house for health reasons, and now rumors are flying about who is moving back to the town to live in the house where it all took place. Of course, it wouldn't seem right for the sheriff to be seen poking into a crime from 1965, so as usual, it's up to gutsy Jo Beth and her fearless bloodhounds to track down the truth and expose the real killer.

Meanwhile, a search-and-rescue call plunges Jo Beth, along with her partner and friend Jasmine and two of her best bloodhounds, into the Okefenokee Swamp to track the mysterious disappearance of a mother and child. As night draws nearer, the search draws the rescue party deeper into dangerous and unforgiving territory, closer to a chilling discovery and face to face with death.

And as if she didn't have enough to do, Jo Beth continues to conduct her now-famous tracking seminar for bloodhound handlers, mends a friendship that has been put to the test, and narrowly escapes an encounter with Bubba, a man bent on nothing short of murder.

Virginia Lanier has done it again -- in the midst of all the tantalizing plot twists and quirky characters, Jo Beth stands out. Her wit, her southern feminism, her compassion and her humanity all make her character and this series the best of its kind. Even the most seasoned mystery lover will be left panting.

2 out of 5 stars I'm surprised and disappointed that no one else.......2004-06-19

is offended by Lanier's outdated, inaccurate, and incredibly ugly stereotyped depiction of a mentally disabled person as a vicious killer who is physically repulsive and morally corrupt. Mentally disabled people are far more likely to be the victims of crimes than they are to commit them, and they are no more prone to physical violence than the average person.

Lanier's having come of age at a time when our society treated the handicapped as less than fully human does not excuse her for having perpetuated such a negative image. Unless she spent her adulthood in social isolation, surely Lanier had ample opportunities to observe people with a variety of handicaps, both mental and physical, going about their daily lives in much the same manner as she herself did.

To resort to a nasty and downright false representation of the mentally disabled as a plot device suggests a serious lack of both imagination and knowledge on Lanier's part. I rather enjoy the other books in her "Bloodhound" series, which makes this offering all the more disappointing. I would like to think that Lanier came to realize that she had unfairly maligned the mentally disabled and regretted having fallen back on a such a negative stereotype instead of coming up with a more creative plotline.

There are other flaws in "Blind Bloodhound Justice." The main story line wasn't much of a mystery this time, with the solution to the three-decades old murder jumping out at the reader almost immediately. A likeable character featured in previous books is done away with and then rarely mentioned again, much less mourned. Further, for a woman who lived in a southern state, Lanier seems surprisingly uninformed about the use and spelling of uniquely southern words such as "y'all" (used as a plural only, please, and written and pronounced as one syllable rather than two as in "you all"). And as always, many of the characters are described in Lanier's trademark stereotypes - though none quite as ugly and false as that of the mentally handicapped woman - which some readers may find at least tiresome if not actually offensive. Aside from an unexpected development concerning one of Jo Beth's dogs, this book in Lanier's series is, unfortunately, not worth adding to the reader's personal collection. Check this one out from the library.

Just want to recommend this book, I actually enjoyed it more than the others. Well told, and after reading the other books in this series, you are really feeling like you know the characters and can identify with them. The very end is wonderful, and I can't wait to read the next.

5 out of 5 stars Not to be Missed.......2002-07-23

I started the Virginia Lanier series on the recommendations of the customer reviews. I wasn't disappointed. How interesting could a series be that spotlights the raising and using of bloodhounds in the field? I too wondered and happily found out. The only thing I can add to the other reviews is that after having bought all the books, I learned not to read them back to back. Although throughout the books, she earns the love and respect of not only current, but new friends and people she works with, her personal life is not always the most uplifting. Would I still recommend the series? -- it's not to be missed...

5 out of 5 stars Superb Reading.......2000-08-08

I have read all of Virginia Lanier's books (date of review 8/7/00). All five are full of excitement and suspense as well as romance and humor.

Being a dog lover myself, I was fascinated by the nuances of caring for, training, and working with bloodhounds.

I just finished her last book in the series and I will sorely miss Jo Beth and her adventures into the swamp with her magnificent dogs. I am eagerly awaiting the next one!

5 out of 5 stars House on Bloodhound Lane.......2000-07-09

Virginia Lanier grabbed me by the lease, sent me with Jo Beth and her bloodhounds on many a search through territory I'd never experienced before and she returned me safely to Bloodhound Lane. I've read the 1st four in the series and can't wait for the next edition. May there be many many more. .

            Book Description

Means is the most controversial Indian leader of our time. This is the well-detailed, first-hand story of his life so far, in which he has done everything possible to dramatize and justify the Native American aim of self-determination, such as storming Mount Rushmore, seizing Plymouth Rock, running for President in 1988, and-most notoriously-leading a 71-day takeover of Wounded Knee, South Dakota, in 1973. This visionary autobiography by one of our most magnetic personalities will fascinate, educate, and inspire. As Dee Brown has written, "A reading of Means's story is essential for any clear understanding of American Indians during the last half of the twentieth century."

3 out of 5 stars Good book on Russell Means.......2007-07-07

This is a thorough and long book by Russell Means about his life as an American Indian. He has a lot of hatred toward the white race, which is understandable, but it makes his book hard to read at times because his hatred comes through the pages. He is also obviously biased at points, but that is to be expected because it is an autobiography. However, this man has been through a lot and has done a lot for AIM (american indian movement) so this is a good read to find out about that. If you can get past the hatred in this book, it's worth the read.

This book is a must read for anyone who wishes to know the true struggles of our native peoples today. This book covers it all and thumbs up.

I am an African-American male, product of the struggles for humanity in the 60's. I started Russel Means book with great anticipationand finished it with unbridled digust. Where do i begin,Means lies when he says aim started the community patrols before anyone, incliding the Guardian Angesl and the Nation of Islam.Fact:The patrols were started by the Black Panther party when Means was still dealing drugs, and being an all the way live drunk. He talks of rhe confration at the BiA building and uses it to propogate his anti-black racist venom ,throught the book most African-Americans are depcited as reactionaries and/or fools. Means goes on to lie,how Indians would marry slaves and prefer to go into slavery than suffer the injustices of being Indian. Fact:Means trivalizes the holocaust my people suffered. In Dennis Banks book he cites the support the African-American community provided during the liberation of the BIA building. Means gets his cookies off villifying an dinsulting and denigrating people who, because of our shared oprresion in this country, should be his natural allies, While excusing blatant racists like Mcgovern and Janklow, and allowing himself to turn tricks for Larry Flynt. See Russell whore for 30 pieces and all the butt he can kiss. When one reads this book you get the impression there would be no Aim without Russell Means, every good idea is his,the people are lost sheep without him,Talk about mendacious meglomania. Even white supremacists group are given a greater degree of emmpathy then the African community, live a black person in America, and see how great life is,this short sighted fool cannot recognize people who have a common oppressor because of his reactionary racist tendacies. He condemns the black cops, and Ithis is the one thing er agree on,who did the oppressors biding during th biia liberation, asking how could they allow thenselves to be used to harm another disenfranchised people, yet he cannot see the simalarties with those of the Indians mecanaries who served in Vietnam and participated in the murder of a people who were fighting for their own destiny. This myopic egomaniac, see nothing wrong in murdering vietnamese for U.S. imperialiasm, not one indaian was killed by those D.C. cops. To reiterate Means neglects to mention How during the Bia liberation, the African American community provided food and spiritaul support,at yellow thunder camp,it is course a black man lacking character. Which leads one to conclude M eans is the worst type of anti-black racist, the racist who comes from the wretchded of the earth. In conclusion depsite Means facade at heart he is still a macintosh,a red and green apple(since this parasite will seel his soul for white money, despite his declarations to the contrary),but white to the core.

"Let her go to Italy!" he cried. "Let her meddle with what she doesn't understand! Look at this letter! The man who wrote it will marry her, or murder her, or do for her somehow. He's a bounder, but he's not an English bounder. He's mysterious and terrible. He's got a country behind him that's upset people from the beginning of the world."

When a young English widow takes off on the grand tour and along the way marries a penniless Italian, her in-laws are not amused. That the marriage should fail and poor Lilia die tragically are only to be expected. But that Lilia should have had a baby -- and that the baby should be raised as an Italian! -- are matters requiring immediate correction by Philip Herriton, his dour sister Harriet, and their well-meaning friend Miss Abbott.

In his first novel, E. M. Forster anticipated the themes of cultural collision and the sterility of the English middle class that he would develop in A Room with a View and A Passage to India. Where Angels Fear to Tread is an accomplished, harrowing, and malevolently funny book, in which familiar notions of vice and virtue collapse underfoot and the best intentions go mortally awry.

5 out of 5 stars Where Angels Fear to Tread.......2007-07-25

In E. M. Forster's first novel, an effete English family and their acquaintances encounter an authentic and vital society in the hills of Italy. Vacuous Lilia visits Monteriano in Tuscany and impulsively marries. She realizes her mistake too late to save herself but her English in-laws attempt to rescue the issue of her marriage. Upon arriving in Monteriano, they find that their wealth and education count for less than they thought. Rigid Harriett breaks herself against the local culture and provokes a tragedy, but the more sensitive members of the rescue party, Philip and Miss Abbott, profit in ways that they did not expect.

Forster uses a quiet, simple style that lets the reader be moved by his rather sudden plot revelations. While this is a short novel, Forster finds room for a sincere appreciation of the charms of fictional Monteriano and some gentle humor. I imagine that this very approachable novel would appeal to many different types of readers.

5 out of 5 stars Italy Charms Everyone in the Worst of Times [98].......2007-05-09

If one wishes to learn how Britain's rich entertained, lived and acted during the turn of the century, E.M. Forster and Evelyn Waugh deliver depictions as well as anyone of their generation.

This book delves little with interpersonal thoughts. Instead, it deals with dialogue. Rich, gooey, luscious dialogue where the characters reveal their characters, their thoughts, their inner beings by what words they choose to deliver to others.

In the staid world of turn-of-the-century Britain, the dialogue must be masterfully written as the people did not directly say what they felt. They were polite, but in a cold British manner. And, Forster's ability to write that type of British dialogue is unrivaled.

Additionally, this book - which is amid the wonderfully warm Italy - delivers a great ethical question: what to do with a baby born of a British mother (who dies in child birth) related to very impudent and snobby persons residing in the outskirts of London. Who does he belong to? His wealthy British relatives where he will be brought up well but little loved? Or with his loving Italian stallion 23-year-old father who has little money, knows nothing of rearing children and probably would fail (at least in a British perspective) in raising the child?

Forster delivered a similar ethical issue in "Howards End" where the last wish of a dying wife to her husband of many years (through oral bequest and written - but unwitnessed note - which contradicts her written will) is not followed by her husband and family who wish to keep their inheritance in exchange for dishonoring the matriarch's last wishes.

But, each issue is not finished with the sudden first response. In each book, more events occur which gloss the issue.

Read this book soon in time to "A Room With A View." Italy obviously touched Forster - this book and "Room With A View" are its derivatives. Thank you Italy for being you to Forster, who wrote that Italy ". . . sent me going as novelist."

4 out of 5 stars Somewhat dated but still a worthwhile read.......2007-02-03

This book suffers from dated style and tone. Also, its one of those book where nothing much happens until EVERYTHING happens. Still, the characters are drawn with universal qualities and weaknesses and so it was a book to which I could relate. Forester is a subtle master in developing the theme that everyone is different than what they initially appear to be. A cad really can be a gentleman in disguise. "Angels" is a worthwhile read.

4 out of 5 stars So Much Drama.......2006-09-06

Forster's novel highlights the interracial marriage between an English woman (Lilia) and an Italian man (Gino). Much of the discussion surrounds their marriage and its various negative and positive aspects, which are few. The characters revere the wealthy, English society as better than lower-class, Italian lifestyle, but their ideals are challenged by the death of Lilia and her son.

Even with the constant derision of the Italian culture, the characters do think Italians are more honest with themselves and their passions than the English are, and the characters who mention this idea are in many ways jealous of Gino and his people. The idea is raised that living in light of your passions could lead to a more fulfilling life than living with the standards of high English society. At the theatre, the Italian people are thoroughly enjoying themselves with a very intrusive atmosphere of theatre viewing, and the English characters will not put up with it. They consistently refuse to live life as it comes to them, instead deciding that it must be processed through the socially acceptable constructs of English culture.

4 out of 5 stars Good, short read.......2005-10-03

Hovering somewhere around 100 pages, _Where Angels Fear to Tread_ is a good, short weekend read. The novela tells the story of an upperclass British family that travels to Italy to save the son of their late daughter-in-law from a savage upbringing by his Italian father, their daughter-in-laws second husband. There aren't a whole lot of happy moments in the novella - on the whole it's pretty depressing, but it was never boring, and the characters, some lovable, some completely aggravating, were at least interesting. Having never read any other works by E.M. Forster, I am not cut out to comment on style, but knowing that this was his first work makes me really want to read his later novels - this was great for a first effort, so I'm sure his more mature work is fantastic.

              Book Description

“There is going to be a shooting here and it is a toss-up who is going to get the boy’s first round. The soldier, about ten years old, is jamming the barrel of his gun hard against my driver’s face, and unless the kid decides to go for me, the relief worker, my driver is going to get his head blown off.”

              WHERE SOLDIERS FEAR TO TREAD

John Burnett survived this ordeal and others during his service as a relief worker in Somalia. But many did not. In this gripping firsthand account, Burnett shares his experiences during the flood relief operations of 1997 to 1998. Ravaged by monsoons, starvation, and feuding warlords, Somalia continues to be one of the most dangerous places on earth. Both a personal story and a broader tale of war, the politics of aid, and the horrifying reality of child-soldiers, his chronicle represents the astonishing challenges faced by humanitarian workers across the globe.

There are currently thousands of civilian workers serving in over one hundred nations. Today, they are as likely to be killed in the line of duty as are trained soldiers. In the past five years alone, more UN aid workers have been killed than peacekeepers. When Burnett joined the World Food Program, he was told their mission would be safe, their help welcomed–and they would be pulled out if bullets started to fly.

When he arrived in Somalia, Burnett found a nation rent by a decade of anarchy, a people wary of foreign intervention, and a discomfiting uncertainty that the UN would remember he’d been sent there at all.

From Burnett’s young Somali driver to the armed civilians, warlords, and colleagues he would never see again, this unforgettable memoir delves into the complexity of humanitarian missions and the wonder of everyday people who risk their lives to help others in places too dangerous to send soldiers.

“Where Soldiers Fear to Tread is a rousing adventure story and a troubling morality tale....If you’ve ever sent 20 bucks off to a relief organization, you owe it to yourself to read this book.”--Michael Maren, author of

              5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2007-02-13

This is a well-written, fast-paced book that sheds an important light on relief work, its benefits and its risks. I knew very little about the floods in Somalia, and this was a great lesson as to what I missed.
Great read. You won't be disappointed.

              4 out of 5 stars Bullet Train.......2005-06-28

This book reads like a bullet train from New York to Mogadishu, from heaven to hell, a pageturner if ever there was one. You get a privileged insight into the life of a reliefworker, a first hand account of the absurd madness of a godforsaken place where anarchy rules and where lives have no value.

Speedboats donated by western governments to distribute relief supplies quickly turn into perfect terror tools for local warlords, who find them to be ideal to impose their will on the population, specially when mounted with a machine gun...

John Burnett completely repaints the picture that I had in my mind of a relief worker. Only guts, ingenuity and a whole lotta luck will help you to get out alive of a place like this.

From the comfort of your home to the nightmare of Somalia is just a book away...

              5 out of 5 stars A Great Read about today's Heroes.......2005-06-19

Superbly written and very hard to put down, this book throws quite a few surprises. Burnett provides first-hand insight into the adventurous and dangerous world of those on the field who distribute humanitarian aid.

Relief workers, like those they are trying to help, survive crocodiles, snakes and hippos, feuding warlords, and child soldiers. At the same time they are dealing with competing aid organisations and governments' political and military agendas. Through tears, anger and frustration, he reveals what it is like trying to save lives in a war zone.

5 out of 5 stars A Startling Real Life Adventure Story.......2005-06-14

"Where Soldiers Fear To Tread" is a startling, well-written book, that revealed to me a world I never knew existed. You hear about relief workers in some far away regions of the world and sometimes you read that they are kidnapped or killed. But to read a first hand account of how John Burnett survived these hazards brought the news of these stories straight home. Some of the scenes will likely give me nightmares for months to come. Whether or not you care about relief work, this book is a great adventure story that is hard to put down.

5 out of 5 stars The Real Heroes -- and a Great Read!.......2005-06-02

There are not many books that you pick up and don't put down until its finished but I've found one. It starts fast and stays that way, building the suspense. The TV survival shows pale in comparison to the events in this book. This is fascinating read and it certainly opened my eyes, from the politicizing of aid to dodging the bullets in a war zone. These people, the relief workers, are the real heroes. As the cover says - anybody who gives 20 dollars for a humanitarian crisis, better read this book.

                      Book Description

Where Angels Fear to Tread delves in depth into the universal questions about the nature of reality, the meaning of God, and the truth of human existence from the viewpoint of physics and science. What is God? Why do we perceive objects as solid, when in truth, they are not? Where does religion fit in? Is this life only a dream-like existence? What is the Dark Energy that fills the universe? Are we influenced by the values and beliefs of the masses? Can we influence our own life events, and if so, how? With a degree in physics and mathematics, author Alex Morrey provides answers to these questions in a provocative and powerfully written manner that will broaden every truth seeker's knowledge and leave readers captivated and greatly enriched.

Where Angels Fear To Tread: The Nature of Reality and the Meaning of God

This New York Times Book Review was written by Ellen Tanner Marsh.

What is reality? Is what we see really what is truly there? Not according to Alex Morrey's thought-provoking new book, Where Angels Fear To Tread. The Nature of Reality and the Meaning of God.

Forget what you think you know about the universe. Our universe, according to Morrey, is a consequence of our collective space-time beliefs. What we see and feel and sense are not really based on objective fact at all, but rather on our shared "universal belief" that reveals to us a reality we've all seemingly agreed to accept.

But what about the greater reality, one that encompasses dreams, psychic phenomena and precognitive dreaming? Can we be consciously aware of both the real world and this dream world? And how do we get closer to this ultimate reality, which encompasses both?

Morrey's book is filled with fascinating accounts of how the human brain can shape our world. True Reality in theological terms. Morrey says, is nothing less than "the mind of God," with Jesus of Nazareth as an example of how we should aspire to live within it, as a Real self. But can we make inroads to this Reality? Can we heal ourselves and, as good Christians or better still Realists, heal the world as well?

Morrey's prose is clear-eyed, inspirational and so provocatively smart that it's downright exhilarating. Read this book and you'll never look at the world the same way again.
