Book Description

In October of 667 A.D., Fidelma of Cashel - sister to the one of kings of Ireland, a religieuse of the Celtic Church, and an advocate of the Brehon courts - is struggling with her most challenging role yet, that of mother to her infant son Alchu. So it is with mixed feelings that she receives the summons from Abbot Brogan. There have been a series of shocking murders that have terrorized the villagers near the Abbey of Finbarr; three young girls have been violently slaughtered - one per month of the night of the full moon, the most recent only days before during the badger's moon, October's full moon. The villagers are angrily demanding answers from the abbey, who are housing three visitors from faraway--strangers who the villagers believe are behind the gruesome murders. As a respected Brehon, Fidelma, along with her companion Brother Eadulf, is dispatched by her brother the king to restore order to the panicked village and investigate the killings. But time is running out and Fidelma must act quickly, uncovering the complicated truth before the next full moon comes and the lunatic killer strikes again.

4 out of 5 stars When someone things the good of the 'me' is all that matters........2007-09-05

Young single women are being brutally killed during the full moon and after the third murder, the villagers demand the three strangers at the abbey be turned over to them for justice. The clan leader Becc stops the riot and sends word to Colgú for assistance. Sister Fidelma is sent to investigate and see that the law is served and the killer brought to justice. Fidelma finds that there seems to be many intertwining threads of hate, bigotry, and greed some of which may impact the case making the solution more difficult to achieve. Nonetheless, Sister Fidelma uses all her senses and logic to view the evidence and piece together facts to find the killer.

Badger's Moon is the thirteenth of the Sister Fidelma mysteries. Luckily for me in this case thirteen is not an unlucky number for I enjoyed this Irish mystery and look forward to many more visits with Sister Fidelma and Brother Eadulf and in fact this book ends on a cliffhanger for the next book. You don't need to have read the previous books to enjoy this one, as there is a historical note that explains many of the cultural and religious mores of Ireland in the 7th century.

In fact, I read the historical notes first and then the pronunciation guide before starting the book. The writing was straightforward and descriptions and historical and political digressions were smoothly entered into the narrative so that you hardly notice that you are also getting a bit of an education in Irish history as you read. This historical background is helpful in that gives you enough of the historical climate to not get dragged out of the book when something happens that just seems way too modern for the time period. I found myself constantly muttering to myself about how much freedom and control over themselves that women lost between the 7th century and when we got the vote in the 1900s.

One of the reasons that I read books is to learn. Tremayne's writing is clear and concise and while his background is in Celtic history, he never lets the background of the story intrude on the narrative plot line. However, the background is so rich and clear that you find yourself learning about history without realizing you are doing it. Since Celtic history has been an area that I've wanted to learn more about this series is going to be a perfect vehicle to learn more of an era, culture, and people that has interested me -- and with tight plots and suspenseful mysteries thrown in how could I miss.

5 out of 5 stars Book Thirteen in the Series.......2007-02-03

Peter Tremayne is the fiction pseudonym of a well-known authority on the ancient Celts, who has utilised his knowledge of the Brehon law system and 7th-Century Irish society to create a new concept in detective fiction.

The Sister Fidelma novels are taking on almost cult proportions and are becoming ever more popular with each offering from the author, whose obvious knowledge of the times and subjects he writes about shines out like a beacon on the shore.

When a series of horrific murders are committed in the Kingdom of Muman Sister Fidelma and brother Eadulf are called to restore order and find the killer. The victims are all young girls who have been killed with unspeakable violence on three consecutive full moons. The local people believe that three dark strangers from the distant land of Ethiopia, who are staying as guest of the Abbey at Finbarr must be the culprits and an angry mob attacks the abbey leaving the inmates in fear of their lives . . .

1 out of 5 stars Bulwer-Lytton candidate.......2005-08-07

Oy! How can any self-respectin' lover of things Irish (or, for that matter, reading) get past the first paragraph? Methinks Mr. Tremayne's relatives write his Amazon reviews . . .

I'd like to suggest an opening for the author's next installment of the forensic-detective-nun series:

It was a dark and stormy night; at least it seemed to be.

5 out of 5 stars a real page turner not to be missed.......2005-03-29

Fast paced and suspenseful, this latest Sister Fidelma mystery novel was a real page turner and is, so far, one of the best reads of the year.

All is not well at Cinel na Aeda: some mad person has been violently killing the young girls of the village. So far there have been three such deaths, each has been brutally cut up, and each was murdered when the moon was full. The chieftain of the village, Becc, is at his wit's end as to how to proceed -- his chief brehon is dead, and three strangers (all religious) who are currently staying at the Abbey of Finbarr are suspected by the villagers of having committed the murders -- and because he is a cousin of Colgu (the King of Murman and Fidelma's brother) Becc decides to go to ask Colgu for help. Or specifically to ask that Fidelma, a well known advocate of the courts and crime solver, come to Cinel na Aeda to investigate and help apprehend the murderer. A new mother, Fidelma is finding motherhood not all that it is cracked up to be and is almost relieved to be asked to solve this latest puzzle, much to her companion, Brother Eadulf's chagrin. But he agrees to go along with her to the village and to help her investigate. And Fidelma will need Eadulf's help for the case is very perplexing indeed and things at the village are very tense: the three girls were well liked and the villagers are scared and angry and ready for revenge. Confronted with prejudice against the mysterious strangers, closed mouth villagers and a lack of evidence, Fidelma will need to use every bit of her reasoning faculties in order to sort out this puzzle and so catch a seemingly insane killer...

Rich in historical and cultural detail and complete with a mystery subplot that actually invites the reader to reason along with Fidelma, "Badger's Moon" was a treat to read from beginning to end. The book was fast paced, and the suspense and tension was evenly maintained throughout. And not only were there enough red herring suspects and plot twists to keep any mystery addict happily preoccupied, the author also added a psychological element into the mix by juxtaposing a crisis that Fidelma was personally facing at the latest twist her life has taken (motherhood) and her not so nice (but completely understandable) feelings she had about it all. So that all in all readers are in for a very intriguing and compelling read, especially since they will be able to solve the mystery along with Fidelma -- though I'm not so sure about the cliffhanger at the end, even if it does make for some very slick marketing.

5 out of 5 stars fantastic historical mystery .......2005-02-27

Sister Fidelma of Cashel, an advocate of the law courts in Ireland in mid-seventh century Ireland, married her beloved Brother Eadulf of Seaxmund's Ham from the land of the South Folk and has a month old son. Fidelma is not contented to rest in luxury in the home of her brother King Colgu of Muman. She yearns to apply the law so that she can win justice for whoever needs her help.

Her cousin Becc, chieftain of the Cinel na Aeda asks Colgu for an advocate to find the killer of three young girls who were murdered in the past three months on the night of the full moon. When she and Eadulf go to Becc's territory, she finds frightened and angry villagers. Many believe that the three monks that are taking sanctuary in the church who come from Africa are the killers because the murders started soon after this arrived. A distraught person related to one of the victims blames the man who married his ex-wife after she divorced him or the man's son who was courting his daughter. Fidelma must cut through layers of lies and deceptions if she is to find out who the killer really is.

Even in an enlightened country such as mid-seventh century Ireland, the three black African monks are feared and mistrusted because of their skin color. The protagonist is at her very best as she interrogates people, sifts through misleading clues and works with her beloved companion Eadulf, following a trail that will lead them to a much greater mess than either anticipated. BADGER MOON has a shocking cliff hanger that will have readers breathless waiting for the next installment in this fantastic historical mystery series.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars superb drawing book.......2006-10-07

This is probably the best book on drawing dinosaurs out there, especially for adults. There isn't just one artist's dinosaurs pictured into this "how-to" book, but artwork from Brett Booth and Bryan Baugh as well. Many dinosaurs are featured in here, including Triceratops, Spinosaurs, Therizinosaurus, Chirostenotes, Saltasaurus, and dozens more. Generally depending on which dinosaur you are drawing, it can take you between 1-4 steps to complete your picture. Also, there is information for each dinosaur you draw, which makes it all the more interesting. The artwork is very detailed and sleek. Excellent for any beginner or if you're just trying to brush up on your skills.

5 out of 5 stars The best book on the subject yet!.......2006-04-19

You may think me biased, since some of my reconstructions where used in the book, but I did not write any of it (and I don't recieve royalties based on sales). While there are a few nit-picky details I would change, this is easily the best book on how to draw dinosaurs ever made. It is the only one where the reader is given a short anatomy lesson, and shown skeletal reconstructions so artists can learn how to reconstruct extinct animals themselves. It also shows off the remarkable diversity of dinosaurs to good advantage. Highly recomended.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2005-07-29

What a wonderful book. This covers all types of dinosaurs from T-Rexes to flying bird dinosaurs. Hundreds of great drawings throughout. I can't draw but I still enjoyed looking at it and my ten year old son will not put the thing down. He was allowed to take one book on our vacation and he chose this one. I don't think he put it down for the whole 6 hour drive to Disneyland. There are some technical drawings of skeletons and muscles and stuff I don't think he understands yet, but the how to steps are easy enough for him to follow. Highly recommended if you have a dinosaur lover or artist in the family.

    Product Description

With the first illustrated edition of Jules Verne’s Journey to the Center of the Earth, 1867, readers began a fascination with the concept of dinosaurs and prehistory. Although rudimentary paleo-fiction had actually gotten its start decades earlier, it was the partnership of Verne and illustrator Edouard Riou which gave dinosaurs a visual life and essentially set the stage for their artistic and literary depiction. Over the next century or so, writers would time and again come back to dinosaurs as an element of fantastic fiction, often using these creatures—through the venue of the written word—to reflect the world of the writers’ own time. From Jules Verne to Michael Crichton, this literary survey examines how paleoliterature originated, developed and matured from its inception in the 1820s to the present day. It follows historical trends on the crafting of classic dinosaurs, investigating the enlivened figurative and metaphoric meaning of fictional dinosaurs and related prehistoria. Also discussed are the ways in which dinosaur fiction mirrors contemporary ideas about subjects such as geology, the Cold War, environmentalism, time travel, evolution and bioengineering. Texts included are limited to those which are available in English and which emphasize dinosaurs, although other favored pseudo-dinosaurs are sometimes discussed. Featured authors include Ray Bradbury, H.G. Wells, and Poul Anderson, among others. In select cases, the novelizations of movie scripts are also utilized. An appendix provides brief summaries of deserving dinosaur texts, organized alphabetically by author. Illustrations and an index are also included.

I remember reading this book as a child and loving it. Today I think I love it even more. The illustrations are so rich and well executed. I'm sad it isn't published in hardcover anymore. Every household should own a copy.

5 out of 5 stars If Norman Rockwell illustrated dinosaurs..........2007-03-13

You might just end up with "Dinotopia". That's how good the illustrations and paintings in this book are, and should be the primary reason for purchasing the book. The artwork is absolutely first class, and the book can be enjoyed by children and adults alike. I purchased "Dinotopia" in 1992 when it was first released, and subsequently, picked up its sequel "The World Beneath". They both still hold a special place on my book shelf more than 10 years later. HIGHLY recommended!

5 out of 5 stars realistic alternative history.......2006-02-19

This book has a lot about dinosaur names and how the dinosaurs lived, even the plants they eat. There are a lot of pictures that can help you to learn to recognize them. It is all very well drawn.

But it has a different perspective because they think of time differently, not as 1 o'clock but as when to do certain things, such as times to harvest.

It is very good realistic fiction because it makes you feel like you are a part of the story. It is written as a journal, kind of like talking to you, which makes the story seem more real.

The plot is very complicated. So it always keeps your attention and keeps you turning the pages. There is not a lot of action, but when there is it is very realistic because you feel the danger and excitment.

          5 out of 5 stars It's the pictures.......2005-08-30

I first discovered this book the year it was released. I skimmed through it's pages, but never bought it for myself...just others (nieces, nephews, friends). Now, I am a dad... so, of course I had to buy it for my kids (and for me).
The story is good. However, it is the pictures that sell the book. What a talent!

          5 out of 5 stars A True Classic!.......2004-12-17

This book is based on a fictional diary found by James Gurney, which tells the story of Arthur Denison and his son William Denison, shipwrecked during one of their voyages and saved by dolphins only to find themselves on an incredible island, unknown to the world, and habituated by dinosaurs.

The incredible thing is that the dinosaurs in this island live side by side with humans. Arthur and his son soon find out that the people in Dinotopia are very friendly as are the dinosaurs. Arthur and his son travel trough the island discovering and learning about the island and about a civilization where there is virtually no violence or war or prejudice of any kind. This island is a true Utopia.

The way the story is written you can't help it but fall in love with this place. The illustrations are so beautiful you feel like Dinotopia could exist. The story is very touching. This book is one of those books that really make your imagination come to life. The whole journey trough the island is incredible. Although this is a children's book, this book can be enjoyed by people of all ages.

An lucid indication that a literary anthology is proving compelling reading is the vigorous twirling of the sundry wayward whiskers dangling dangerously from my scruffy countenance. "Dinosaur Fantastic" provoked such behavior as an noteworthy ensnaring of dinosaur tales. A+ tales include: "Cutting Down Fred" which features a limerick-reciting tree borne of an acorn/contraceptive fusion; "Rex", the story of a harried and henpecked husband's battle with the household carnivore; "Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Dinosaur", part non-fiction and part speculation of future dino-story themes; "Just Like Old Times", with a homicidal Canadian physician being sentenced to imprisonment within the confines of a T-Rex's mind; "Dino Trend", a hearty and incisive stab at the trendcrazies that corrupt our culture. On the flip side, a trio of duds: "After the Comet" utilizes an omnipotent observer to account a herd of triceratops seeking sustainance, but this voice is obnoxious like a narrator from those Walt Disney nature shows from the 1950's; "On Tiptoe" showed promise--blurred images in a photographer's pix may be dinosaurs living on the fringe--but concludes without appeal, satisfaction, or style; "The Skull's Tale" also dazzled initially but lost its lustre by the second page. Don't let the 3 unwise inclusions prevent you from the acquisition of an otherwise stalwart entry into the dino-fiction universe.

Allen, Roger MacBride: The narrator's *very* paranoid friend Bueber has finally outdone himself with the "Evolving Conspiracy", starting at the *very* top regarding Who could fake fossil evidence. (Bueber has echoes of both Sherlock Holmes and of one of Lord Peter Wimsey's most famous opponents.) No relation to Allen's FARSIDE CANNON.

Cadigan, Pat: Nanotechnology makes it possible to customize anything almost instantly, from interior decoration to body shape; Cadigan avoids exposition altogether and *shows* the reader what can be done. Marcia and Randall are playing with the current "Dino Trend" of assuming dinosaur shape, since she brought home a free sample of Bronto-Cream. (Tyrannosaurs are so popular that they're about to become passe.)

Casper, Susan: Eldon found the mosasaur while fleeing a false accusation as a child, and believed she'd brought him luck in exchange for silence. Now that his luck's turned as an adult, however, he feels the sting of "Betrayal".

Delaplace, Barbara: "Fellow Passengers" The narrator's boss at _The Blatant Inquirer_ hated breaking the story of a *real* deinonychus preying on cattle, only to be elbowed out by the mainstream press. Then the animal-rights people weighed in to release the carnivore back into the wild...

DiChario, Nicholas A.: "Whilst Slept the Sauropod" inside Sleepy Mountain, the human villagers had only dim records of its existence, since it woke with earthquakes only at very long intervals to feed; this awakening is a harbinger of change to this place forgotten by the world.

Fawcett, Bill: The triceratops were among the last survivors "After the Comet"; this follows the leader of one shrinking herd seeking shelter from the winter that brings no spring.

Feeley, Gregory: "Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Dinosaur" - Interesting essay, mixed with assorted story outlines.

Gerrold, David: "Rex", the only carnivore in spoiled little Jill Fillman's miniature dinosaur collection, has been so overfed that his aggression and size allow him to escape his enclosure regularly, but the greatest toll is on the Fillmans' marriage. Jonathan feels that the main difference between tyrant-lizard and tyrant-child is that Rex eats hearts only once...

Hernandez, Lea: The narrator (all 1st-person present tense) always knew her familiar would be a pterodactyl, but the summoning ritual for "Pteri" acted like a dose of truth serum.

Kerr, Katharine: Lilas Rock-shaper narrates "The Skull's Tale" - that of the peace-token between her and the Hookclaws given for their warning of a trespasser on her family's territory.

Koja, Kathe and Malzberg, Barry N.: "Rex Tremandae Majestatis" ("Awe-Inspiring King", see Mozart.) Depressing, with a sexually explicit opening scene, but well-constructed story. Leona's depression clothes entropy in dinosaur images, which are only reinforced by her ex's cartoon-show work and her 6-year-old son's toys.

Lackey, Mercedes and Dixon, Larry: "Last Rights" The 3 self-styled animal-rights 'guerillas' seeking to liberate GenTech's DinoSaurian experiments have a dismal track record on predicting consequences or learning from experience.

Meacham, Beth: Combine the narrator's friend who photographs bizarre architecture + chameleon skin + dinosaurs sneaking around "On Tiptoe" = move over, NYC sewer alligators...

Nimersheim, Jack: "The Pangaea Principle" = 'To know yourself, you must be willing to learn from others.' Pietor Sinkovich's father carved his favorite proverb as a gift for the day Pietor took his Biogenetics degree in St.Petersburg. Now his old friend Rashad, a paleontologist, has an interesting sample for him to work with - but what is Pietor's true objective?

O'Donnell, Kevin (jr.): The vermin infesting the Copes' apartment are a "'Saur Spot" that persuades even Gideon's wife that they need a 6-inch Coelophysis for pest control.

Resnick, Laura: "Curren's Song" The legend of how St. Columba once saved a swimmer from the Loch Ness monster, from the swimmer's viewpoint. Why wouldn't he be grateful?

Robinson, Frank M.: As the museum's titular director (read: chief fund-raiser) explains the meteor-strike theory of "The Greatest Dying" to a reporter covering the new 6-story dinosaur exhibit, Reid Locke is examining some *very* unusual amber, and avoiding both the director and the *real* research chief (who doesn't subscribe to the meteor theory).

Rusch, Kristine Kathryn: Young Willi's witch powers mean that she needs to learn her mother's "Chameleon" skills to survive among humans, but the only things that don't taunt her there are the animals and the replica dinosaurs.

Sawyer, Robert J.: "Just Like Old Times" is in non-linear braided format. In one thread, Cohen has been sentenced to end his life in a tyrannosaur's mind (unable to affect its movements, thus avoiding a butterfly-effect on history). In the other thread, the trial unfolds, with a judge who strives to fit punishment to crime.

Sheckley, Robert: "Disquisitions on the Dinosaur" suffers from pointless exposition and discontinuity; bored time-travellers introducing dinosaurs to Nero's Rome.

Sherman, Josepha: "Wise One's Tale" is her just-so story of how her people got their wings.

Smith, Dean Wesley: The city plans on "Cutting Down Fred" - the limerick-prone oak who broke up the narrator's relationship by commenting at an awkward, sexually explicit moment - who can access his ancestors' memories. (A ginkyo would have made more sense.)

Stith, John E.: "One Giant Step" - although the reptilian time-travellers have gone millions of years into their own past, rather than to the Moon, in this alternate history.

Tarr, Judith: By the time a couple qualifies to have children, they're usually ready to split from the stressful testing. The narrator's ex has this year's custody of their 4-year-old daughter, despite the fact that he joined an Ice Age commune. (The custody system's interesting in its own right.) Nevertheless, mom takes Janie to the "Revenants" petting zoo.

West, Michelle (as Michelle M. Sagara): April Stephens follows a quiet, solitary routine, with only occasional wistful glimpses of colour in other people's lives that her own lacks. There's no one to really care when the "Shadow of a Change" first falls upon her sleep.

              3 out of 5 stars A slow book........2000-05-10

Dinosaur fantasic was overlong and some of the stories had little to do with dinosaurs. And a few that did were ones that had been put into every other collection of dinosaur stories. So I had to reread a lot of ones that I had already read.Very dull reading
