Customer Reviews:
not too interesting.......2007-02-27
Holly is best when she stays in the obedience ring. Her sidebar into Massachusetts history is forced and uninteresting and so are the characters she introduces in this one.
A little different for Holly this time........2007-02-05
In this book Holly Winter is trying to write a story about humans instead of dogs. This decision was brought about with a bet between and her lodger, Rita. She delves into colonial history to research and write about Hannah Duston (a pioneer woman who was captured by Indians in 1697, who was remembered historically for her killing of her captors). While she is researching this, Holly is also drawn to an 18-year-old murder that seems to be connected somehow to her research. This is a good book, and even though there is less about dogs and the dog world in it, we still get to see Rowdy and Kimi. Ms. Conant also depicts a disfunctional family, and her characterizations of the people in this family are believable. The best part about these books is the three-dimensional characterization that Ms. Conant creates.
Animal Appetite.......2007-01-22
The usual fine work by Susan Conant. I enjoy all of these dog books, with enough mystery to keep me interested.
animal appetite.......2005-09-05
Good reading. Susan Conant's Holly Winter series just keeps getting beter. If you're looking for some light reading that is pure entertainment, look no further.

I love all of SUSAN CONANT's mysteries. Featuring
Holly Winter and Rowdy her Alaskan Malamute. They
are all original stories and each one is different
from the previous. I have read them ALL

A book for poem and art lovers of all ages........1997-03-25
After three kids and hundreds of children's books, this new addition to our personal library is already getting well worn. The beautiful artwork and entertaining poems are as enjoyable to myself as the are to my 21-month-old daughter. I recommend this book to every parent (and child)

Book Description
There is now enough basic work to sketch out the principal systems at all levels of the brain, from prefrontal cortex to lower brainstem, which are orchestrated to provide control of food selection, preference and consumption. At the same time, the complex interplay between central systems and signals generated from peripheral systems include the gut, liver and fat stores, as well as the interactions with the neuroendocrine system can be described in some detail. A continuing theme throughout the book is that the functional analysis of appetite and food intake cannot be limited to a single focus, e.g. hypothalamic neuropeptides and their interactions, but must be based on a fully integrated view of the several contributing systems.
Appetite and Body Weight: Integrative Systems and the Development of Anti-Obesity Drugs provides an expert guide to the neural, neurochemical, autonomic and endocrine interrelations which underpin appetite and the controls of food intake and body weight. The book covers many of the neurochemical entities that are currently under investigation, including: neuropeptides, leptin, insulin, monoamines and endogenous cannabinoids in relation to appetite and body-weight control. In addition to the neuroscience analysis, there are also chapters that provide an expert guide to some of the key psychological concepts that the researchers believe are essential in trying to understand the phenomena under investigation. The volume will also serve as an authoritative guide to the current emphasis on the development of novel, efficacious anti-obesity medication.
* Provides an integrative view of the many systems involved in appetite and how they interact to effect food intake (i.e. the brain, endocrine, gut, liver etc.)
* Considers psychological aspects such as incentive, preference, liking and palatability, and sets these concepts in their behavioural, pharmacological and neural contexts
* Examines the development of novel anti-obesity drugs, drawing on experience of pharmacological development work, pre-clinical tests for anti-obesity efficacy, and clinical trials of candidate anti-obesity compounds

Book Description
This book deals with a novel aspect of a topical problem that is of widespread concern. Obesity and other eating disorders are significant human health problems that are proving highly resistant to prevention and cure. The recognition of important genotype/environment interaction in the causation of these problems and of the extensive genetic homology of higher animals justifies the importance of cross-species comparisons.
The book covers observations made on animals in the wild as well as experimental data on laboratory animals and farm animals in order to lay out the basic genetic and environmental factors underlying the control of appetite (including diet selection) and body weight. Breakdown in these intricate mechanisms are then compared to examine the possible common candidate genes and their interaction with non-genetic factors, particularly the availability of diet choice and of levels of body activity.
Animals have much to tell us about these mysteries and may significantly aid progress in dealing with what are still highly intractable and serious diseases of the modern world.

Book Description
This book brings together the behavioral, physiological, and neuroendocrine regulation of calcium. An understanding of how the brain orchestrates whole-body demands for calcium is introduced. The approach is one in which behavior in addition to physiology serves bodily maintenance. The book links basic and clinical literature surrounding calcium homeostasis, as a wide variety of clinical syndromes are tied to calcium metabolism. Because calcium is so important during life stages particular to women, an emphasis is placed on the relevance of calcium to women's health throughout the book, though not exclusively since calcium is fundamental to both sexes.

Customer Reviews:
Fantastic work, one annoyance.......2002-12-27
Of all the official and third-party expansions that have come out since the release of 3e, I have to rate this as my #1 favorite as both an indespensible reference and a fun read.
Although written for the very-specific "Scarred Lands" world, most of what can be used directly or adapted easily to your own world. In fact, it is much more adaptable than most other works I've found for 3E or other systems. Like any expansion, you will need to consider the impact of items and spells to your campaign, as some of what is presented is quite powerful.
The highlight of the book is the descriptions of spells and items. The level of detail, the thought behind the entries, and the insight it gives you into the Scarred Lands is just fun reading, whether you ever use the item or not.
The book has the added bonus of being inexpensive for a hardcover game supplement, and especially compared to Wizards' official expansions.
The only annoyance of the work is the magic items. There is no "cost to create" numbers associated with any work, and while you can rederive this using the standard 3e tables, it's exclusion deprives you of the ability to spot-check the power of an item, relative to other items in the book.

A Must Have Relic For Any DM.......2002-01-07
The book, Relic and Rituals has to be one of the most well done 3rd party game books out for the Dungeons & Dragons, 20 game system.
The book adds many intersting and worth while spells to acheive for any arcane or divine spellcaster. Wizards, Clerics, Paladins, Rangers and Bards or any other character can benefit from this book as it can be incorperated into any game world.
The material in the book overall is excellent and I cant stress enough that it is a MUST BUY, it also adds new spell option called "Rituals". While very interesting I have not found a great use for this; yet.
The prestige classes are small but was very pleased with the quality of there prestige classes. One Example is the "Blood Witch" which sacrifices his own or his enemies blood for more powerful spells.
Overall I give this book 5 stars for spell design, magic item, and overall usefullness. No matter what game setting you play; IT CAN BE INCORPERATED IN ANY SETTING which makes it worth while no matter what you might use or not use from the book. Dont be dissapointed with the mildly lower quality book printing and detailed art compared to Wizards of The Coast, as big money and flashy design, cant compare to R&Rituals useful content.
Honestly to say this should be on every DM's game shelf. A must buy. PERIOD.
decidedly NOT a relic.......2001-10-12
top notch work, typical of Swords and Sorcery Studio. This adds a corpus of new spells and magic items, plus new rules about a form of ritual magic. this can definitely add a plus to most campaigns (and certainly mine). The only drawback may be that the whole work is keyed to the authors "scarred lands" campaign setting, possibly needing some work to adapt it to another campaign world
Interesting Bag of Tricks.......2001-10-09
Let me start off by restating what a few other reviewers have said about this release: many of the prestige classes, spells and magic items presented here are powerful. That said, this book creates a slew of new options for DM's to use in their campaigns. There are literally 100's of new spells and magic items that range from the mundane to the very interesting. There are even several new Minor and Major artifacts for your perusal. The benefit of this sourcebook is that the players can have a wider range of spells available, as well as the dm, in order to specialize their characters. That being said, the villians can have them to present new challenges to the characters. The same can be said of the magic items. While many of the ideas presented are interesting and quite possibly very useful, they also tend to be powerful and may need to be used very carefully in order to not unbalance a game. As for the appearance, the book is well done, obviously a quality piece of work. I was very pleased with it's appearance and overall layout. A good work for DM's to inject some new blood into their campaigns, just watch where you place some of the goodies.
Decent, not outstanding.......2001-09-14
This book fleshes out several areas, such as ritual magic, and provides a host of new spells and magical items.
The spells are, for the most part, workable and not out of balance with the rest of the campaign world. Many of the Prestige Classes are out of whack, but that is a trend that Scarred Lands is just echoing from a great many of the D&D 3 class sourcebooks.
Most of the magical items are overpowered and are not well explained as to function.
The section on Ritual Magic is good and provides a new set of options of characters, particularly at a low level, who would like to stack metamagic feats but lack spell levels to do so. The rules are fair and balanced, but often-times are not clearly explained.
True Rituals are interesting, but difficult to incorperate for anyone other than Dungeon Master as a plot-hook.
If you are a Dungeon Master looking for an interesting expansion to the magical rules, I can recommend this book just for its sections on ritual magic, even neglecting the spells (which aren't half bad).
For players, there really isn't a need.

Impressions from a contributor.......2002-10-08
I maybe a bit prejudiced since one of spells in here is one I sent to White Wolf as part of their Open Call for writers. My first impression is that they took the format they used in the first Relics and Rituals(which I loved, especially the Vigilant prestige class) and repeated much of it with new material. Among the great new features includes Astrology as part of the game mechanics for play and a Prestige Class that is basically an old kit from the Shair's Handbook of the old Al-Qadim campaign setting for 2nd Edition(based primarily on 1001 Arabian Nights, good campaign setting to run that kind of campaign) revamped and made a little more divorced from that setting. Spells are nice, I like a few of the enchanted stuff and the rituals are always nice. Tattoo magic was interesting concept and they expanded it in this edition slightly but not at the expense of other sections. All in all, it's a great rescource for the Scarred Lands in particular and D&D/D20 in general.
Get this book!.......2002-10-07
Now don't get me wrong, i'm a huge fan of forgotten realms and dragonlance settings, but, Scarred lands has won my heart with this book. Imagine, adding the zodiac into your campaign, mixing arcane and divine with cabals, new prestige classes like the Sage and the High Astologer, of course great new spells weapons and all in all cool stuff, but also...(are you sitting down?) yes psionics! finally we learn about the Slarcians and how they... well, read the book. also, some great tomes. all in all the book is great. wonderful stories, great gameplay material. as always a little ~enh on the artwork, but definately not too bad. and of course, find it hard to keep track of what spell is where? yes the spell list tells you where to find all the coolness!... enjoy.
Book Description
Buddhism is popularly seen as a religion stressing the truth of impermanence. How, then, to account for the long-standing veneration, in Asian Buddhist communities, of bone fragments, hair, teeth, and other bodily bits said to come from the historic Buddha?
Early European and American scholars of religion, influenced by a characteristic Protestant bias against relic worship, declared such practices to be superstitious and fraudulent, and far from the true essence of Buddhism.
John Strong's book, by contrast, argues that relic veneration has played a serious and integral role in Buddhist traditions in South and Southeast Asia-and that it is in no way foreign to Buddhism.
The book is structured around the life story of the Buddha, starting with traditions about relics of previous buddhas and relics from the past lives of the Buddha Sakyamuni. It then considers the death of the Buddha, the collection of his bodily relics after his cremation, and stories of their spread to different parts of Asia.
The book ends with a consideration of the legend of the future parinirva&ndot;a (extinction) of the relics prior to the advent of the next Buddha, Maitreya. Throughout, the author does not hesitate to explore the many versions of these legends and to relate them to their ritual, doctrinal, artistic, and social contexts.
Book Description
Buddhist chronicles have long been had a central place in the study of Buddhism. Scholars, however, have relied almost exclusively on Pali works that were composed by elites for learned audiences, to the neglect of a large number of Buddhist histories written in local languages for popular
consumption. The Sinhala Thupavamsa, composed by Parakama Pandita in thirteenth-century Sri Lanka, is an important example of a Buddhist chronicle written in the vernacular Sinhala language. Furthermore, it is among those works that inform public discussion and debate over the place of Buddhism in
the Sri Lankan nation state and the role of Buddhist monks in contemporary politics.
In this book Stephen Berkwitz offers the first complete English translation of the Sinhala Thupavamsa. Composed in a literary dialect of Sinhala, it contains a richly descriptive account of how Buddhism spread outside of India, replete with poetic embellishments and interpolations not found in
other accounts of those events. Aside from being an important literary work, the Sinhala Thupavamsa. is a text of considerable historical and religious significance. It comprises several narrative strands that relate the life story of the Buddha and the manner in which Buddhist teachings and
institutions were established on the island of Sri Lanka in ancient times. The central focus of this work concerns the variety of relics associated with the historical Buddha, particularly how the relics were acquired and the presumed benefits of venerating them. The text also relates the
mythological history of the Buddha's previous lives as a bodhisattva and concludes with a prediction about the future Buddha Maitreya. Reflection on Buddhist ethics and instruction on the Dharma, or the Buddha's teaching, are found throughout the work, indicating that this historical narrative was
meant both to recall the past and give rise to religious practice among contemporary readers and listeners.
This new translation makes a significant work more widely accessible in the West and adds to our knowledge of how local Buddhist communities imagined and represented their religious and cultural heritages in written works.

Examines the practice of relic veneration in a variety of forms of Buddhism.
Book Description
Nineteenth-century philologist and Biblical critic William Robertson Smith famously concluded that the sacred status of holy places derives not from their intrinsic nature but from their social character. Building upon this insight, Mecca and Eden uses Islamic exegetical and legal texts to analyze the rituals and objects associated with the sanctuary at Mecca.
Integrating Islamic examples into the comparative study of religion, Brannon Wheeler shows how the treatment of rituals, relics, and territory is related to the more general mythological depiction of the origins of Islamic civilization. Along the way, Wheeler considers the contrast between Mecca and Eden in Muslim rituals, the dispersal and collection of relics of the prophet Muhammad, their relationship to the sanctuary at Mecca, and long tombs associated with the gigantic size of certain prophets mentioned in the Quran.
Mecca and Eden succeeds, as few books have done, in making Islamic sources available to the broader study of religion.

Relics of the Christ
ASIN: 0226743160 |
Book Description
The famed linen cloth preserved in Turin Cathedral has provoked pious devotion, scientific scrutiny, and morbid curiosity. Imprinted with an image many faithful have traditionally believed to be that of the crucified Christ "painted in his own blood," the Shroud remains an object of intense debate and notoriety yet today.
In this amply illustrated volume, John Beldon Scott traces the history of the unique relic, focusing especially on the black-marble and gilt-bronze structure Guarino Guarini designed to house and exhibit it. A key Baroque monument, the chapel comprises many unusual architectural features, which Scott identifies and explains, particulary how the chapel's unprecedented geometry and bizarre imagery convey to the viewer the supernatural powers of the object enshrined there. Drawing on early plans and documents, he demonstrates how the architect's design mirrors the Shroud's strange history as well as political aspirations of its owners, the Dukes of Savoy. Exhibiting it ritually, the Savoy prized their relic with its godly vestige as a means to link their dynasty with divine purposes. Guarini, too, promoted this end by fashioning an illusionary world and sacred space that positioned the duke visually so that he appeared close to the Shroud during its ceremonial display. Finally, Scott describes how the additional need for an outdoor stage for the public showing of the relic to the thousands who came to Turin to see it also helped shape the urban plan of the city and its transformation into the Savoyard capital.
Exploring the mystique of this enigmatic relic and investigating its architectural and urban history for the first time, Architecture for the Shroud will appeal to anyone curious about the textile, its display, and the architectural settings designed to enhance its veneration and boost the political agenda of the ruling family.
Customer Reviews:
Some excellent stuff in here.......2004-12-31
Of all of the D&D-related material not made directly by Wizards that I've found, this is definitely my favorite. The suggestions for classes are all quite true to genre conventions, and there are some excellent suggestions in here for adopting an Arthurian flavor into your campaign. The Knight core class is a lot of fun, as are the new prestige classes. My favorite is by far the Green Knight--it's definitely an NPC-oriented class if you're going strictly by canon, but it gave me a little bit of a rush to see the classic Gawain tale made manifest in a full stat block (They even get vorpal immunity!).
If I have one complaint, it's that this is one of the most poorly copyedited pieces of D&D material I have seen yet. Typos abound, even in section headings! I understand that this is a minor detail, but it shows a certain amount of carelessness in a book that is otherwise so full of great new material. I don't think this will be a make-or-break point for any buyer, but it did detract from my enjoyment of the book.
All in all, I've had a lot of fun implementing the Arthurian elements into my campaign world. This book will make a great start for all of you young squires ready to become knights, to woo fair maidens, and to battle evil the world over!
Excellent.......2004-08-19
This is a great guide to roleplaying in an Arthurian setting. It provides roles for nonhuman PCs to fill in the campaign (depending on whether or not you want them to be near-human or otherworldly) and a niche for almost all the classes. They even managed to give monks a tiny bit of breathing room. Also, the Honor system is definitely worth taking a look at, as it is extremely well-crafted and realistic (of course, there are far more ways to lose Honor than to gain it). Finally, there's the magic. The book strongly advises that you don't use the "big bang" spells unless it's a dire situation or unless the foe is a dishonorable cur, since these are considered dishonorable uses of power, and in fact the book makes these spells harder to cast (more time, expensive material components). The book also draws a sharp line between wizards and sorcerers (sorcerers are more spontaneous and suited for adventuring, but wizards craft longer-lasting magics and are more prized as councilors for kings). All in all, my hat goes off to Sword & Sorcery on this one. Well done!
Book Description
Western scholarship has largely ignored the practice of venerating the physical remains of the Buddha, a practice that has been a central focus of both monastic and lay Buddhists for more than two millennia. This study draws on textual and archaeological evidence from India and Sri Lanka to examine the place of relic veneration in the history of South Asian Buddhism. It contributes to current work on the history of Western Buddhology, to the discipline of religious studies, and to the history of Indian and Sri Lankan Buddhism.
