Book Description

Now back in print: the "superlative spy novel" (New York Times) by the author of the red-hot forthcoming thriller A Firing Offense. A national bestseller in its hardcover edition, Agents of Innocence is the book that established David Ignatius's reputation as a master of the novel of contemporary espionage. Into the treacherous world of shifting alliances and arcane subterfuge comes idealistic CIA man Tom Rogers. Ordered to penetrate the PLO and recruit a high-level operative, he soon learns the heavy price of innocence in a time and place that has no use for it.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Central Theme Flawed.......2007-10-03

Compelling spy novel, and very realistic, it puts you right there, but in the end the central theme is flawed. The Israelis/Americans are not the same as the terrorists of the world--there are definitely two sides out there, one with good guys and one with bad guys.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating, thrilling and sad all at the same time.......2007-10-01

Very well written - in depth and fascinating. Sad because it seems to be so close to the truth about the CIA and its various spy agencies really work. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent spy novel.......2007-08-19

Ignatius writes with a wry wit and educates the reader as to the sensual sights, and smells, as well as the culture of the Levant. He presents the espionage business in a brass tacs sort of way thankfully devoid of much of the James Bond. If the reader enjoyed this book one of whom's main motifs is that the CIA had a special relationship with an Arafat underling who is obviously the Red Prince, I would recommend that the reader also follow up by reading the books: The Quest for The Red Prince and Striking Back.

4 out of 5 stars Thoughtfully written and currently relevant.......2007-07-12

Although this is a work of fiction set more than 25 years ago it reads as if it could be describing events today. The author tries to present the espionage game as it probably really is rather than dressing it up to make for a more "exciting" story. The novel is much more John le Carre than Robert Ludlum but it does not suffer any lack of drama or excitement.

For anyone who likes a good dramatic and suspenseful story and who would also like to gain some perspective on the Middle East this is a great choice.

4 out of 5 stars Compelling, Informative, More Relevant than Ever.......2007-06-22

CIA operative Tom Roger's work in Lebanon (from the 1960s to the 1980s) is this book's basis. It is no wonder that this is reputed to be required reading at "The Farm" due to the author's understanding of Lebanese politics, his apparent understanding of a case officer's acitivities, and the continuing grim relevance of terrorism.

Two downsides to the book: some of the substance is offset by gratuitous sexual content, which in parts makes it seem more like a trashy summer romance novel than a potential intel classic. Also, there could have been some more character development, especially with some of the major players.

              Book Description

The aim of Gold-Hall and Earth -Dragon is to re-create as fully as possible for modern readers the original force of the poetic language of Beowulf. Lee makes use of a wide, archetypal literary context for Beowulf to provide illuminating parallels and contrasts with poems and fictions from other times and places. He demonstrates how the poem's symbolic system reveals itself through the metaphorical workings of the Old English words, patterns of imagery, and more general narrative structures, and how the poem might have been experienced and interpreted by the Anglo-Saxons in the light of other Old English poems. The critical tools that Lee uses - combining certain techniques of New Criticism and close reading with postmodern theories of the self-referentiality of language and with Northrop Frye's conceptions of structure and polysemy in literature - make possible a fresh new account of Beowulf as a work that is very much alive in its poetic language, a finely wrought symbolic work of imagining, still resonant with meanings old and new.

              Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Kennings and the Christian Context.......2000-05-25

The book is divided into two major sections.

The first section's greatest contribution is its perspective on individual Old English words. If you are intrigued by kennings, then there are two or three interesting chapters in this book which seem to offer a novel treatment of the subject. This work has a comprehensive bibliography and seems solidly based in text.

The Christian context, in structure, language, character, etc. is the overarching theme of the second half of the book, which is divided into chapter length essays. This section would be most useful to someone investigating the pagan/Christian juxtaposition in Beowulf. At times I disagreed with various points/premises, but the overall argument was compelling.

Here's a beautiful supplement for the Forgotten Realms - this sourcebook details the famous (and infamous!) mercenaries and heroic fellowships of the world. There are chapters on history, guidance, and maps; most importantly, there are complete details on the fascinating characters themselves; their powers, dreams, motivations, and secrets are all revealed here. A huge, beautiful display of color plates crowns this section. And, as a coup de grace, there are complete BattleSystem statistics in the back, so you can have these proud elite contingents fight in your epic battles! Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Novel.......2001-12-14

This is a precusor to some of the more recent historical fiction by authors such as Margaret George. I picked this up as a kid in the used bin at a bookstore on Amsterdam Ave. and around 118th Street (near Columbia) for about 50 cents in 1978. This book was my first exposure to the Norman Conquest, but from an English point of view, and I re-read it once or twice in the next few years. Just recently, I picked it up again to see if it was as good as I remembered, and it stood up well. There are now many more sources of historical record regarding the Norman Conquest that are not weighted with the natural prejuicide of the conquerors (example: David Howarth's 1066 - The Year of the Conquest), but at the time, R. Sprague's book was an engrossing and entertaining precursor to those works.

              5 out of 5 stars Gold star!.......2000-09-12

This is a really terrific book. The main character is fictional, but many of the other characters are very much real. I liked this account of the Norman Conquest, especially the way that Sprague depicted King Harold II's personality. An all-around good book.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful account of life during the Norman conquest.......1997-05-19

Red Lion and Gold Dragon by Rosemary Sprague is a well-written, warm account of life growing up during the Norman Conquest for young readers. It is the story of Aelfred Ansculf, an young Englishman who had everything until his baron father married a Norman. From that point on, everything will change for this young heir.Throughout this book, Aelfred will lose nearly everything, but in the end, he comes to know the true meaning of sacrafice and true love

For 2 years I attended countless seminars and read many books searching for guidance and information that could help me grow my business. Dragon Spirit is the book that let in the light that I had been looking for. In a unique one on one style, I felt that the authors were talking directly to me offering the type of advice that anyone wishing to succeed with an enterprise should pay serious attention to. I did and it changed the way my company does business and had an immediate effect on the way our customers viewed our services and the way we viewed ourselves. If you have a business or if you are trying to start one, this book can make the difference you've been looking for.

If you have a business or are in the process of starting one or if you have been on the fence needing just the right push to get you on your way to undertake your dream, this is a must read book which guides and gives authentic steps on how to create and market a suceessful enterprise.

              2 out of 5 stars Poorly written.......2004-07-12

Ever read the instruction manual for a product from China which was obviously a bad translation from Chinese to English? You know the kind, where some of the sentences come out to nonsense? Two words for Rubin and Gold: proof readers. This has to be the most poorly written book I've ever read. If you can wade through all the errors, you might find a tidbit or two of useful ideas or motivation. I can't imagine how much they must have paid for their endorsements, or better yet, who would have risked their reputation by standing behind them. Perhaps these "Ministers of Tea" should stick to their hot drinks and leave the writing to those who understand English.

              5 out of 5 stars Loved It!.......2004-06-13

As a hard core coffee drinker I wondered what a couple of guys that ran a tea company could offer someone like me, an individual who has been trying to get a commercial design firm to reach the level of success that it can. I was over taken in the very first pages of this book by its language, wit, humor and straight forward advice. This is a fast read that tells you what you need to do in order to run and market a business of any size successfully. Now that I have read the other books in the Zentrepreneur series I discovered that these books all seem to be part of an ongoing info-fest that will invoke and inspire you as they did me into doing what needs to be done without anchoring yourself with the kind of doubt and hesitation that keeps you from reaching your goals in business or in life. Time spent reading this book is time well spent.

              4 out of 5 stars A Potential Hero.......2003-05-01

Dragon's Gold is the first novel in the Kelvin of Rud series. John Knight was a Terran and a fugitive from the Queen's dungeon when he meet Charlain while trying to steal her horse. Charlain was a fortune-teller and knew that John was coming and that they would be married, so they were wed the next day and had two children, Kelvin and Jon.

In this novel, Kelvin and his sister Jon are dragon hunting with Mockery, the mule they have just bought. Jon finds a scale and then another and then more, following the dropped dragon scales up and over the nearby hill. On the other side is a dragon, which she first thinks is dead, but then only injured. To resolve the problem, she bounces a stone off the dragon's snout with her sling and gets his attention. Now she decides that she is in trouble and yells for Kelvin. Coming down the hill, she falls in a hole and can't get out. Kelvin goes to her rescue and falls into the same hole.

The dragon doesn't see Jon when he comes over the hill, but he does see Mockery. As he goes after Mockery, Jon pops up, yells that he can't eat their mule, and bounces another stone off him. Now the dragon is after Jon again. When the dragon grabs Jon with his tongue, Kelvin and Jon drop a boulder on it. The dragon reflexively lets go of Jon and tries to pull his tongue out with no success. Kelvin sends Jon after the tent pole to use as a weapon. Of course, she has to ask why he wants the pole and then checks out the injury on Mockery where the dragon has pulled out the mule's tail, but finally she brings back the tent pole. Kelvin sharpens the pole and stabs the dragon in the eye, which causes the dragon to jerk up his head, with pole and Kelvin attached thereto. The resulting fall knocks Kelvin unconscious.

When Kelvin comes to, he finds himself up a tree, the dragon dead, and Jon busy prying off scales. They remove as many scales as they can reach without moving the dragon and start home. However, a bandit acosts them, steals the scales, and heads off to sell Jon to the Boy Mart (he hasn't yet noticed that Jon is a girl). Kelvin tries to stop him, but is totally ineffective. The only thing left for him to do is to follow Jon and the bandit, but instead he goes home and reports the kidnapping. The guardsmen identify the bandit -- a former guardsman -- but kick Kelvin out for wasting their time. The youngest guardsman, however, refers Kelvin to his father, Mor Crumb.

This novel is about a prophecy of the Roundear that will unite the kingdoms of Rud. Kelvin has round ears from his Terran father and so is supposed to fulfill the prophecy. He has fought a dragon, but he has a long way to go before he is ready to lead armies. His sword play needs a lot of work. So does his aggressiveness; Jon has more than he does.

This story is a magical quest tale, searching for the magical artifacts of Mouvar the Magnificent. On the way, Kelvin learns to fight and to be an effective leader. He has plenty of help, starting with Jon and Mor Crumb.

Recommended for Anthony fans and anyone who enjoys light adventure tales with a touch of humor.

              5 out of 5 stars Dragon's Gold.......2001-03-07

I absolutely loved it!It was a truely imaginitive piece of work. I'd like to see more work of this caliber. A sci-fi / fantasy ride from start to finish.

4 out of 5 stars This book is wonderfly entrancing!.......1999-05-21

I first read this book six years ago when I was twelve. Recently I was going through some old boxes and I found this old dusty book. I read it and just like that I fell in love with reading all over again.I definetly recomend reading all of the books in this series.(Dragon's Gold, Serpent's Silver, Chimaera's Copper, Orc's Opal, and finally Mouvar's Magic.)

              3 out of 5 stars A book about a prophecy and technology.......1998-08-24

This is an interesting book about what happens when a rift which connects many worlds brings both technology and magic into a single world. This is not one of the best of Piers Anthony's novels, and yet it would be enjoyable to anyone who likes the concept of gloves of stregnth, swords, ray guns, and jet packs all in one. Makes for one interesting book, but definately not on par with some of the series that Piers Anthony has created.

5 out of 5 stars This is one of Piers Anthony's best books........1996-07-04

It is a very good boook, about an alternate world where all people have pointed ears, but some exist from the reality of Earth with round ears, and are hated. In the BOok of Prophecies, it says that a round ear will unite the kingdoms, and make the world better. A boy name Kelvin, a round ear, beins to unknowingly fulfill that prophecy..

Piers Anthony is the best author ever! Only he could make his books in such an imaginative manner!

                  1 out of 5 stars Juvenile.......1998-02-21

The Xanth series is on a downward spiral toward childishness. Kind of Sad, I loved Spell.

2 out of 5 stars Anthony churns out another poor effort.......1997-09-18

Some authors work on bulk. The problem is that once an author is established (s)he can write and write and no one seems to care if the writing turns to junk. Copper is a perfect example. The cliches are forced and painful. The writing isn't too bad, but there's nothing there to make a reader care. The characters have no depth, and the basis of the entire plot is unimaginative. The idea might have been interesting in book one (and I stess MIGHT HAVE) but by the third installment of the series, we really need something fresh and new. Not rehash.Anthony will continue to churn out 2-3 books per year. His name is firmly established and bookstores eat up big names. But until he sits down, thinks up a good idea and takes the time to pull it off, don't bother. Personally, I'd take my chances with a brand new author. You know a new author can't publish this kind of empty junk.
