Laurie King's 1993 debut novel, A Grave Talent, won American and British honors for Best First Crime Novel, and it quickly established a loyal following for her series featuring San Francisco detectives Kate Martinelli and Alonzo Hawkins. She followed up that early success with a clever expansion of the Sherlock Holmes mythos, The Beekeeper's Apprentice. That novel, and the three that succeeded it, partnered Holmes with Mary Russell--a woman very much Holmes's equal in spirit and mind despite her young age. A Darker Place is King's first book to break from these series as she continues to pioneer new territory between literary and thriller fiction.

The success of A Darker Place comes from its slow revelation of the back story, which illuminates the major players: Anne Waverly, Glen McCarthy, and the people of Change. King brilliantly portrays the psychological split that drives Anne to self-destruction, both in her sexual relationships and in her self-effacing work for the FBI. Though a respected university professor and expert on cults, Anne Waverly was once a cultist herself. For 18 years she has struggled with personal tragedies that wrenched her from that experience, and she has dedicated herself (through academic labor and her covert work for the FBI) to saving the lives of others who become embroiled in religious fanaticism. Now, despite a vow that she has ended her relationship with the FBI and its work in defusing cults, she returns for one last effort at the request of Agent McCarthy. Anne cuts her hair, changes her name, and gradually loses herself in her new role as a member of Change. But her investigation soon becomes a journey into her own psyche, into the dark places of her past, as she sees her own life played out again in the members of the cult. --Patrick O'Kelley

Book Description

Called "one of the most original talents to emerge in the '90s" by Kirkus Reviews, award-winning author Laurie R. King delivers an intelligent, terrifying, engrossing drama of good and evil, unlike any she has written before....

A respected university professor, Anne Waverly has a past known to few: Years ago, her own unwitting act cost Anne her husband and daughter. Fewer still know that this history and her academic specialty--alternative religious movements--have made her a brilliant FBI operative. Four times she has infiltrated suspect communities, escaping her own memories of loss and carnage to find a measure of atonement. Now, as she begins to savor life once more, she has no intention of taking another assignment. Until she learns of more than one hundred children living in the Change movement's Arizona compound....

Anne soon realizes that Change is no ordinary community and hers is no ordinary mission. For, far from appeasing the demons of her past, this assignment is sweeping her back into their clutches...and to the razor's edge of danger.

4 out of 5 stars Not a "nail-biter," but definitely engaging.......2007-01-11

I have read three of King's Mary Russell series, so I bought this book with expectations of a similar read -- at least a similar style. This book was quite different, however, which speaks of King's versatility. Honestly, the first 100 pages move slowly, but then the pace picks up never to slacken. The first part of the book acquaints you with the heroine in depth: your knowledge of where she is coming from increases the significance of her reactions to the events that follow. I found the one sex scene to be a little disturbing, and the constant references to Anne's middle aged body left me feeling both uncomfortable and admiring of King's realism. She also portrays the heroine's love for the two children in so frank a manner as to bring out the almost sensual quality of motherhood. Anne's reaction to 5 yr. old Dulcie (almost feeling her breast leaking with milk she hasn't produced in years) is a believable reaction from a woman in grief and guilt over the loss of her only child. The reader is let into Anne's MOST private thoughts, and the discomfort one feels only attests to the realistic characterization. Anne Waverly "got to me." I cared very much what happened to her all the way to the end.

If you are looking for a "nail-biter thriller," as the NY Times Book Review puts it, find another book. If you are looking for a realistic character who embarks on a dangerous journey of self-redemption, read this one!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully paced suspense novel.......2006-05-01

A Darker Place by Laurie R. King is a fabulous suspense book. Many authors who write different series use the same pacing or styling in their writing, so I was pleasantly surprised by this book. I've read all of King's Mary Reilly books, so I was expecting something similar. This was entirely different, but in a good way. Anne Waverly helps the FBI in situations with religious groups that are beyond their scope. After suffering the loss of her own family, she has the compassion and skill to help others, but two children inside The Change make everything personal for her again. The suspense started so slowly, it paralleled the slow way Anne/Ana came to join The Change in the book. As she circled them slowly, getting to know them, so the writing also crept up slowly in tempo. By the end of the book, the pacing was so quick I literally gasped on the last page. Another wonderful thing about King's writing are the minutiae of the subject that she's discussing. Whatever she writes about, she's studied thoroughly, and she passes clever tidbits along to the reader. In this book, I learned about alchemy and the psychological ramifications of hostage negotiation! I highly recommend this book to any suspense fan.

4 out of 5 stars An intellectual thriller.......2006-02-12

I have been a fan of LRK for several years now, having read most of the Mary Russell series and a couple of the Kate M. series. This novel, A Darker Place, is a fascinating and well-researched thriller that takes you into the mind of somebody being tormented by the consequences of a bad decision and the reparations she feels are still owed. It is almost like a Hitchcock production in the sense that it weaves a sense of normalcy with palpable evil. The characters are very well developed (in my opinion) and the story visualizations are superb.

I guess I would have to agree with some reviewers who think the ending is a bit abrupt. There is enough detail in preceeding chapters to clearly describe the cult leader's philosophy and dellusions. What is perhaps missing is some final confrontation between Anna and Jonas leading up to the struggle for the gun. It would have been interesting to see his reaction upon finding out that he had been infiltrated and hoodwinked by an FBI agent. Finally, it would have given a sense of closure to know if Anna had finally found peace within herself.

1 out of 5 stars Too Dark of a Place.......2005-03-26

While her Sherlock books are amusing -- this book is just too dark and too depressing for me. I've tried to read it and I keep finding excuses to read something else instead.

5 out of 5 stars Laurie R. King is an amazing writer.......2001-08-16

Not only has Laurie R. King created two amazing original series, the Kate Martinelli and Mary Russell books, but she has written this riveting book as well. She is a master at creating suspense, not in a cheesy John Grisham way, but deliberately leaving you hanging at the end of the chapter so you can't wait to turn the page and find out what happens. This book has a lot of interesting psychological discussions of people involved in cults and shows the mentality of the leaders, and the followers. I think King is a very fair and balanced leader and doesn't make the mistake some writers would make with this subject by showing all cult leaders as amoral, or all cults as harmful. The book keeps you hanging until the ending, which is concise bordering on abrupt. I could see how some people were dissapointed with the ending because it was so curt, but in a way, that's more interesting than books with a long drawn out conclusion and typical "happy ending." King leaves it ambiguous and more up to the reader's imagination (or maybe open to a sequel, I'm not sure). Once again, Laurie R. King shines in the world of shallow popular fiction, outstanding among her peers.

3 out of 5 stars Highways? .......2007-09-13

Yes, as others have mentioned, the editing is terrible! Punctuation (particularly apostrophes) are in all the wrong places. The subject matter is interesting, however the title is a misnomer. . . Strange Highways? Why did the author choose to call it that title when most of the stories are his personal experiences and those of his friends and family in his hometown? Other topics were covered, such as the Jersey Devil, Bigfoot, etc. but the information was basic and not anything you haven't seen in a thousand other books.

2 out of 5 stars Title is Very Misleading.............2007-04-27

If you're looking for strange highway stories across America, this book isn't it. Most of the stories are Tennessee based. That's because Jerry lives near there. Also, Jerry talks about happenings not even based in America like Springheel Jack. His cattle mutilations rant is very biased and he has little in his book to back up his claims. This book is a mess............Stay Away............

2 out of 5 stars True stories or campfire tales?.......2006-07-25

Overall, Strange Highways was a decent read; however I have some problems that bothered me throughout the book.

First of all, this book is deeply in need of a good editor...or at the very least, a decent spellchecker. The book is literally filled with obvious typos and grammatical errors. It really kills the flow of some stories when the eye is continually being distracted by these mistakes. Some sentences don't even make sense when read, so it seems hard to believe anyone actually took the time to proof read the book. Even the table of contents randomly stops listing page numbers half way down the page!

Next, many of the paranormal stories in the book actually revolve around Mr. Coleman's own purported experiences. At first glance, this isn't a bad thing, as it would seem to provide some fresh material for the reader. As I progressed through the chapters however, I became more and more suspicious each time he revealed a first hand experience from some point in his life. I am a believer in at least the strong possibility of paranormal events, and am a regular reader of this type of material. Despite this, I can safely report that I have never actually had any type of paranormal experience, be it cryptozoological, extraterrestrial, ghostly, etc. (Nor have any of my friends, that I know of.) Yet it appears that Jerry Coleman has had these experiences regularly, throughout his life; as have many of his friends. Hardly a chapter in this diverse book seemed to pass without a first hand account! Now I can accept if someone is unusually receptive to ghosts, or believes they've been abducted by aliens, but I find it hard to believe that anyone could experience the diversity of paranormal phenomena Mr. Coleman claims to have experienced. It seems everywhere he went in life a random paranormal occurrence fell upon himself or a friend! I have no reason to call him a liar, but it certainly seemed suspicious after awhile.

My third criticism of the book is that it attempts to be very diverse, yet does not evenly address any of its topics. The entire text is less than 200 pages, despite the fact that many of the topics within have been the subject of thousands to millions of pages of research over the years. It would take a real effort to compress that kind of information into a useful summary of each topic, and unfortunately Strange Highways did not succeed. Topics are simply addressed very unevenly. For contrast, I will use a book I thought provided an excellent overview of various paranormal topics: John Keel's "The Complete Guide to Mysterious Beings." In Keel's work one gets a very broad and thorough (although superficial) treatment of all the topics. By contrast, Strange Highways is completely hit or miss. Coleman chooses to skip discussion of the phenomena themselves, and plunge right into his random collection of stories.

Finally, there is a distinct lack of structure or scientific method in the information presented. There is very little done in the way of references for material, or documentary quotes or photographs. When you read some works on the paranormal, they're well documented, as you would expect a scientific report to be. Strange Highways reads more like campfire tales...they may be true, but there's little in the way of proof short of the words themselves.

I will give one upside to this writing: some of the material does seem fresh to me. Since it's based primarily on some of Coleman's own experiences and/or interviews, it makes sense some of these stories are not to be read elsewhere. You don't have to worry about being hit with the same old rehashed tales for the umpteenth time here.

So in summation, there are certainly better books available. If you already have experience with a given topic you'll be better served choosing a book focusing on that topic. If you're new to the paranormal you won't learn much here, as there is much more storytelling than discussion of the actual phenomena. I recommend this book only to pad the collections of avid readers of the paranormal who may be looking for a couple fresh tales.

2 out of 5 stars Mixed Review.......2006-07-16

It truly pains me to give this book such a low rating, because I honestly came away with a great impression of the author as genuinely good human being with much integrity. However.. the previous reviews regarding run-on sentences, fragments, and above all else- spelling errors- are absolutely true. At some points I couldn't even make sense of an entire paragraph, because the editor/proofreader not only misunderstood the point of the statement, he/she just all out butchered it without really reading it. You can tell this just by reading the paragraph in sequence. I've worked in testing, analysis and editing for many years, and it is evident to me that this book could have rated an additional two stars with a proper review and careful proofreading. I have no doubt the person meant well.. you just can't take ANY shortcuts when properly proofing a book. You must fully immerse yourself in the actual content, to really do your job. But enough on this subject..

As for content, many of the stories were engaging, full of personality and details. I was especially intrigued by the sections on The Mothman and Ghosts. The authors personal stories are interesting and engaging- I especially loved the story about his dear mother and her challenging life experiences. I hope to see this author evolve in the next book, as I plan to see it through. I really believe he is on to something here- he just needs help getting it across. This is true for all of us in our given fields though, and I'm happy to stick with Mr. Coleman on his journey.

4 out of 5 stars Strange Stories, Many Of Which Involve Mr. Coleman.......2006-06-12

Dealing with Cryptozoology to Mass Murderers. Ghosts and Springheeled Jack, there's something for everyone fascinated with the bizarre. Many tales are personal experiences of the author himself, like the time he was followed down the highway by John Wayne Gacy. Yikes! But as one previous reviewer has already noted, very much in need of an editor. Many errors throughout. And a terribly grainy quality to the photographs. But it will still hold your interest if you're into the unexplained.

1 out of 5 stars Lovecraft Wannabe..........2007-05-27

All the stories (well maybe one) in this book are seething with Lovecraft: just read Lovecraft, nevermind this trite slop. Come on Lumley, evil crocodile statues? Wow. Don't let the cover decieve you...

4 out of 5 stars A good short story read.......2006-07-17

Typical Lumley writing, which is enjoyable. The Lovecraft influence is obvious in this collection so if you enjoy the H.P. stories, then you will probably enjoy these.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent second rate Lovecraft.......2005-09-13

Brian Lumley is an excellent writer. That is fact. He has sold millions of books in his career. These stories are basically from early in his career, though, when he was writing very derivative, but very effective, Lovecraft pastiches. If you are a fan of HP Lovecraft, you will probably love this book. If you are not, then you will hate it. I loved it, and am glad that these stories are out in this edition.

3 out of 5 stars Some good "mythos" tales.......2005-01-14

Overall I found this a pretty good collection. "The Fairground Horror", Dagon's Bell", and "Rising with Surtsey" are very good Lovecraft-inspired tales, "Beneath the Moors" would be but it goes on too long. "David's Worm" is creepy, and "The Second Wish" is very good. "The Thing About Cars" is more about insanity than horror. "The Sun, the Sea and the Silent Scream" was disappointing after a good start. "The Big C" keeps this collection from a higher rating, the story was poor and there was no need for the bad language that slipped in at one point.

5 out of 5 stars a fun and scary read.......2002-12-23

this book was a blast. if youre a fan of horror (sometimes very graphic horror) order it today. Big C is one of the more original sci-fi/horror stories i've ever read. fantastic.

5 out of 5 stars Accurate historical account of Anglo and Ute interaction.......2003-01-19

Having grown up in Utah my brain was filled with positive stories of Mormon and American Indian relations. It would not until many years later, when I started researching local American Indian information, that my eyes were widely open to the myth of my childhood education.
I met Gary Weicks several years ago when he was compiling a manuscript from the intensive research he had done. It started as a project for a Forest Service archeological dig in the Strawberry Valley. He was researching for information on the Army maneuvers held there in 1888. However, it became very intriguing to him to read of the Ute interactions that were written in Army reports. It took him on a new adventure researching the history of the Ute and this adventure took many fascinating twists.
As I read the book it seemed there was a new twist every few pages. It definitely gives you a new look on Ute and Anglo interactions. I believe a book like this is way overdue. It's time to bury the myths of the past and teach the true facts of Utah history.
This is a must read book for anyone who is interested in the old west, military, Mormon, Utah or Native American history. The book also spends time telling about the Lost Rhoades Mines Legend and the early miners of the area. It reveals the comprehensive story of a previously unpublished chapter in Utah history.
Weicks states that, "For over 400 years before the Mormon arrival in 1847, many of the Northern Utes and their preto historic ancestors lived in relative peace and stability within the territory currently encompassing much of Utah. In less than twenty years of settlement by the Brethren in their newest Land of Zion, the collective authorities of the Mormon Church, Bureau of Indian Affairs and U.S. Army convinced Congress to officially dispossess these Northern Utes of all their traditional and best lands except for the sprawling and considerably barren wastes of the Uintah Reservation located in northeastern Utah. By Church Prophet and President Brigham Young's own accounting, several bands of these original first contact Indians - through starvation, pestilence and white inspired epidemics - had experienced somewhere between a 90% to 99% mortal attrition rate in their numbers by 1867."
He goes on to say that, "In the mid-1870s Brigham Young, searching for new areas to colonize with land-seeking church members, began a policy that actively encouraged the Utes to depopulate their reservation where treatment by BIA officials over the years was poor and inefficient. Through the Church leader's ability to significantly control both Indian movements and affairs in Utah, Brigham began quiet efforts to induce Congress to throw open the Uintah Reservation to homesteading. Though the soil was largely infertile, the valuable water, timber and grazing resources of the country were coveted by the surrounding Latter Day faithful as well as the large cattle companies."
Brigham Youngs death slowed down this progress. Problems in Colorado with the Ute pushed many Colorado Ute tribes into Utah in the late 1870s.
In the 1880s mining interests on the Uintah and Uncompahgre Reservations gave another push to move the Utes off their reservations. The depression of 1893 renewed this push.
Weicks said, "In 1897, when the great Klondike Gold Rush began in Canada, Americans were caught up in the frenzy of seizing the moment and embracing the chance of renewed wealth regardless of the ravages of the lingering depression. Additional strikes in Alaska in 1899 and 1902 inspired an entire nation to get swept away in the gold fever so prevalent, especially in the West. Old mining tales, such as the Lost Rhoades Mines Legend centered on the Uintah Reservation, were resurrected and received serious attention throughout Utah and surrounding states. These wild stories of incredible riches sustained additional forward momentum to throw open the Uintah Reservation shortly after the turn of the century."
I found This Was the Place: The Darker Side of Mormon Zion to be written passionately and with a folksy wit making it enjoyable reading. It is written in a way that makes it easygoing and hard to lay down.

5 out of 5 stars History of a people in turmoil.......2002-11-24

This Was the Place is the story of the fate of the Indians of Utah and Colorado in the 1800s. Like many Native American tribes, the Utes, Goshutes, and related tribes, were pushed from one piece of land to another, made promises by the government that were never kept, and were ignored when they were hungry and poor and their ability to feed themselves had been taken away from them.

Weicks gives a well-researched, detailed account of the machinations of government, civilians, military, and Indians as all jockeyed for position. He has used primary and secondary sources, and interviews with historians and experts of today. It's an intelligent accounting of who was there and the sequence of events.

Anyone interested in the history of Utah and Colorado, the tribes living in that area, and relations between white and Indian, will find this book of great interest.

          5 out of 5 stars Absolutely amazing!.......2004-05-29

Darker Places is a spectacular collection of never before published stories by Matheson. While reading, I found myself asking "Why?" Why were these stories never released? Why did he hold back on us? Luckily I don't have his phone number, so I couldn't call and ask. But boy, did I want to! This collection is definitely an excellent read!

The first few stories have an animal theme, as the main focal point was a dog. I found this rather interesting. I think Matheson was ahead of his time with the first story. The dog in "The Revolution" swayed the characters to start thinking about vegetarianism and was in league with other animals in the world to start a revolution. I'm not sure when Matheson wrote this particular piece, but throughout the whole book I felt as though I was traveling through the episodes of the "Twilight Zone".

In "The Puppy" we are taken through a "Pet Semetary" like journey. It begins with a boy desperately wanting a puppy, and the mother refuses... In the end the boy finally gets the puppy. In order to appreciate this story, you have to learn how the puppy gets to their apartment in the first place, as well as, all the trouble that is gone through to terminate this animal.

My favorite story in this collection has to be, without a doubt, "Little Girl Knocking On My Door." The dog in this story plays a small role, but he is there nonetheless. The main focus of this story is a little girl who comes knocking on the door of a family's house to see if the girl living there can play. No one knows where she comes from, and has never seen her before in the neighborhood. The best part is when the mother and father finds out that the address that this anonymous girl gives as her address is in reality, not a home. Definitely a spooky story!

While reading, I visualized these stories in black and white television. I could feel the stereotypical comforts of the 50's and 60's through the dialogue given by the characters. I could feel the pain, confusion, and fear that each character held. There are a total of 5 stories and 2 scripts in this collection. These stories definitely take you to darker places. Absolutely amazing!

However this is a good book, I quite liked the wrap up to a intriguing story. Read it!

            1 out of 5 stars A Great Read!!.......2002-10-01

With two such gifted authors, this book couldn't help but be great. It lived up to all my expectations, with unforgettable characters and a well paced story. The dragons were intriguing, not being the usual "bad" kind. I would recommend this to anyone that wants to read something that they will long remember.

5 out of 5 stars Just what to expect from one of the best..........2002-03-10

I have read all of Andre Norton's books, a couple months ago I thought this to be true and was rather saddened that I would never again be allowed to discover one of her spellbinding stories as found in "The Iron Cage", "The Beastmaster", or "Black Trillium". Naturally I was overjoyed when I found my thinking to be in error; as I was browsing through the library I happened upon "Elvenbane" and thus embarked on another adventure that certainly lived up to my expectations in every way. I have since also read "Elvenblood", the sequel to this amazing novel. Mercedes Lackey is also starting to make some waves on the sci-fi scene, and her styles compliment those of Andre Norton so well, yet add a flavor of diversity to the stories, just enough to let you know that without the collaboration of these two great minds this trip into the realms of the imagination would never have been possible. I hope you will enjoy these books as much as I have, and if you have not already read Andre Norton's books just know that you are really missing out!
