Murder in the Back Country.......2007-08-03
When the National Park Service puts a bounty on a killer mountain lion, it rubs National Park Ranger Anna Pigeon's fur the wrong way. It's a knee jerk reaction from the Park's leadership: Mountain Lion Attack! Kill the animal first, ask questions later. Or maybe no questions need to be asked at all. Something stinks at the Guadalupe Mountains National Park, and it's not just the brutal death of a fellow park ranger whose half eaten dead body was found by Anna in the back country. It's the naturalist vs. the politicians. The Park Service, neighboring cattle ranchers and developers all want the mountain lion disposed of. It seems Anna, suspicious of things that are a little too neat, is the only one taking the animal's side.
This is Nevada Barr's kick off novel, and a good one it is. Anna Pigeon, park ranger, is the hero. Unlike most, Anna is a law enforcement ranger. She didn't think there would be much law enforcement to do in this remote park in West Texas. Most enforcement types are stationed in parks close to urban areas where most crime takes place. Anna chose the law enforcement route because the Protective Division does not only the serious cop stuff, but Search and Rescue, where the real action is. When a mountain lion kills a human, it is not a crime, but when the humans make it look like it was done by an animal, yes, no matter if it is in the bedroom or on a city street or the back country, that is murder.
Because of the excellence of the writing, the natural world as a backdrop, and the character of Anna Pigeon, I've read several of Barr's books and have enjoyed them all.
What a start!.......2007-07-15
Nevada Barr begins her series of Anna Pigeon mysteries with this intriguing story set in Guadeloupe Mountains National Park (Texas). Having read A Superior Death first (the second novel in this series) and then Endangered Species and Deep South before going back to read the series in consecutive order of publication, I was wondering how I'd see Anna in Book No. 1. She's not an altogether sympathetic main character, but she grows on you. The intricacies of the plots in the novels seem to grow, but even that in "Track" is full of detail and enticement. For those who are "detailed" people, I'm sure they will find these mysteries alluring. I look forward to reading all 13 of the mysteries.
Another Winner.......2007-06-29
Nevada Barr tells a good tale with interesting characters and setting. I highly recommend her books.
Track of the Cat.......2007-05-15
Good beginning to the Anna Pigeon series. A couple of murders, mysterious only to Anna, but intriguing in their setting: the Guadeloupe Mountains in western Texas. Well written, not heavy, entertaining.
track of the cat.......2005-12-05
The starting of this book is very slow, then it turns into a book you can't put down. The main character in the book is Anna Pigeon, who is a park ranger in West Texas. She is hiking down in the walls of McKiirick Canyon and she find another park ranger dead. The ranger had cat scratches on her. Everone thinks a cat killed her but Anna just can't believe that a cat in West Texas would kill and not eat its prey. Anna start investigating on her own. She uncovers other clues. As she does many other deaths occur. The end of this story is a big surprise. Read it, it's very intertaining.

Guide to Owning an Abyssinian Cat.......2000-01-31
I would recommend this book to any first time Aby owner. It is excellent value for money - covering the essential elements of background, care and behaviour of your new Aby. It is a slim volume with a soft cover, glossy pages and lots of pictures. It contains a good description of the history of the breed and carefully debunks the old theory that the Aby is a direct decendent of the ancient cats of Egypt. It contains clear guidelines for how to take care of your Aby and what kind of behaviour to expect from your new friend. For a book published so recently I would have liked to see more information regarding the new Aby colours - Chocolate and Lilac. I also felt that the 2 page spread of one Aby was not a good example of the breed and did not deserve the glowing description provided in the accompanying caption.
Customer Reviews:
Great Book.......2007-08-21
The book is almost as much as a classic as Moby Dick is. It's the same thing, man versus nature. And Mr.Clark tells the story with such detail that you believe you're standing there with the characters.
Uneven but at times powerful evocation of Sierra Nevada.......2000-07-07
Clark's follow-up to City of Trembling Leaves and Ox-Bow Incident is an ambitious but not totally successful attempt at conveying the cold indifference of the natural world and man's supreme isolation in the universe. Often melodramatic, this tale of a clasically dysfunctinal family of ranchers living in the Sierra Nevada is most notable for one extended tour-de-force sequence: Clark's detailed, snowflake-by-snowflake description of a man's disorientation and eventual descent into madness as he tries to find his way out of a mountain blizzard. This harrowing section of the book may be justification enough for reading Track of the Cat.

Had to have it the minute I saw it..........1999-05-08
What a great book! Even people who aren't really into tigers will be interested in this book. It's hard not to pick it up and flip through all the pictures. Unlike other books I've seen, this portrays the tiger as it really is, a magnificent, majestic, powerful animal, a creature of true design. For tiger lovers and animal lovers alike, this book is one that you should not pass up.

A Tail Within A Tale .......2006-07-15
Even the cover is deceiving.
We see a big black and red locomotive steams towards a dark tunnel, but as "Trouble" gradually reveals, all is not as it seems in this cleverly surprising book. There are sly hints about the real setting, but adults and kids alike will be distracted by Kathy Mallat's bright colors, and tricked by her slyly composed text and detailed but deceptive pictures. Kathy Mallat opens with low perspective pictures of people boarding a train, the conductor shouting: "All aboard! Next stop, Black Cat Crossing."
The train "rumbles through villages where faces are familiar." It speeds along under the engineer's watchful eye, until he spots "trouble" ahead. Soon, the figures watching the train seem unusually static and their faces look indistinct. Many of them point upwards, striking a similar pose--as if they all came from the same mold. Still, it's not enough to give away the surprise, or that there even is a surprise--until the next page, where two large golden eyes stare out at us from a black face, and the engineer yells, "Oh no, Trouble on the tracks." (Note that it's capital "T," Trouble--as in a name...)
Finally, after the train is partially derailed, and trees have fallen (and we begin wondering, "What kind of a book IS this, anyway?), Mallat introduces Trouble the Cat, a cat owned by the "engineer" who constructed the toy train and its realistic-looking town. Mallat changes to human-level perspective, and we seet the black cat dwarfing the train set; suddenly, we notice that the people are posed on barely visible, translucent stands. As the young engineer fixes the train and sounds the whistle, the train once again "rumbles through villages where faces are familiar," and "Trouble" (seen hiding behind "Bapa's Village Store") lurks and waits for another pouncing opportunity.
"Trouble in the Tracks" is an enchanting tail within a tale, and it triumphs both as a straight train book and as a trompe de l'oeil. Like a magician's audience that has been told what to look for, Mallat's reader and listeners are now her confidantes, and they will want to revisit this book looking for clues, proud of their newfound expertise. Some may even get the urge to own a train set, especially if they have their own four-legged "Trouble" at home to complete the create-destroy-repair cycle that makes pretend play so exciting. A wonderful book that will be read many times over.
Great book.......2005-11-04
My 18 month old loves this book. All you have to do is say people and he runs looking for this book (since the train goes through villages and farmlands were people are familiar). He also enjoys pointing out the cat that's lurking at the end.
Watch Out for "Trouble"............2001-09-26
"All aboard! Next stop, Black Paw Crossing!" The engineer makes his final train check, a few last minute passengers climb aboard, the conductor gives the all-clear and we're off. The train pulls away from the station and begins its journey across the countryside. Oh Oh...looks like there's trouble ahead on the tracks. That's Trouble with a capital T, because Trouble is the "engineer's" cat. A cat who likes to "upend" trees, "trample" houses and "derail" TOY trains..... Kathy Mallat has authored a charming picture book with a clever twist that will delight and amuse your little engineer. Her spare, simple text takes a backseat to the beautifully bold and colorful artwork that really tells the story and youngsters will love poring over all the marvelous detail in each picture. Trouble On The Tracks is just right for pre-schoolers and emerging readers and is a story all young train lovers will want to read again and again.

Great Aby Pix.......2000-05-28
Review of Popular Cat Library: Guide to Owning an Abyssinian Cat by Judah Track
This book is the hardcover version of "The Guide to Owning an Abyssinian CatE by the same author. I'm quite disappointed that this was not pointed out in the general description on the Amazon.com site, as I purchased both books, thinking that they were different books! This book has nice, glossy photos, with several fine specimens of Abyssinian cats and kittens in various stages of development. The text is informative and detailed. It covers many areas Ehistory and development of the breed, temperament and conformation (in detail, too), feeding, grooming, health care, exhibitions, etc. etc. There are sections on the interactions between a new Aby and existing pets, or between a new Aby and children. Also, there is some good coaching on how to train or discipline your Aby. I also like the section on accessories, but I wish there were more details and ideas here. The book includes a general index, but it is too general to be of good use. There is no bibliography or suggestions on further reading, which I think is a miss. Overall I think it is a really good read for a first-time Aby owner, or someone considering to be one.

Book Description
A gripping epic of feline survival ...
The Australian feral cat is very much a product of human carelessness at best and callousness at worst. As truly wild as the great cats of Africa and Asia, the feral cat is perhaps the most successful predator in the Australian bush - and a growing threat to the rare native marsupials, birds and reptiles. Its agility, speed, hunting acumen and lack of natural predators make it one of that country's most destructive introduced species, and naturalists and conservationists see its eradication as vital but unlikely. Love it or hate it, the cat is a world-class survivor!
This is the story of such a cat, seen partly through the cat's own eyes and partly through those of an old bushman who is fascinated by a creature his logic tells him he should hate and despise. The cat's life-long fight for survival is an elemental story of the animal world, its interplay with the world of humans, and of the natural forces which shape both.
Customer Reviews:
Novel vs Nature Writing........2006-05-28
I think this is really nature writing posing as a novel. It is a story of Australian feral cats told mostly from their own perspective. There are two men who have minor roles but the cats are the stars.
Toby, a Show Siamese, is taken on a picnic by his foolhardy owners, and answers the mating call of a feral female. A previous reviewer must have skimmed, citing that Toby has the greatest sex in his life. Yeah, well, Toby has never been put to stud, so he's never had sex and I doubt he'd make comparisons. The greatest sex to an animal is the current sex. It's an instinct, not a romance. Toby returns to man, drawn by the smell of bacon but his mating results in a litter of 4 kittens for the she-cat. Fifty years ago, when I was young, people did not have pets spayed, so the she-cat's care of her kittens reminded me of the delight in watching domestic cats rearing and training their kittens. Hopefully, in today's world, most pets are being neutered.
The story continues with the fate of the kittens, the wide variety of edible game for them in Australia, and it continues to follow the life of the one tom cat from the litter. Particularly upsetting was his encounter with an abandoned mixed terrier dog. Dogs have an even smaller chance of survival on their own. And, of course, that is the ultimate message to be found in this absorbing story featuring a wide assortment of exotic creatures, even a flood, that impacts the life of this cat.
The book is a fascinating and educational read.
For cat lovers from 9 to 99!.......2003-06-22
This book is a masterpiece that deserves more stars than Amazon allows. I read it in one sitting, and have read it several times since. The publishing world should be proud of carefully-crafted gems like Cat Tracks. I look forward to more novels from Aalborg.
This is (great) adult fiction!.......2003-01-14
Amazon states that this book is for children, ages 9-12. Not! Like Cat Fancy magazine, I would recommend Aalborg's CAT TRACKS for readers 12 and older. It's a marvelous book, and Aalborg certainly gets inside his cat-protagonist's head, but the mating ritual, the search for - and fininding of - food, and the inherent danger from owls and foxes, might be way above a 9 year old's head. An adult, however, would be truly caught up in the suspense of a feral cat striving to survive. I'll echo what Cat Fancy magazine said: If one person who was considering abandoning an animal reads this book and changes his or her mind, then Aalborg has achieved more than just a good work of fiction. Highly recommended!!! Especially for adults.
The best book about cats I have ever read!.......2003-01-09
I loved this book from start to finish. The author did a wonderful job making you feel like you were right there with the cat. I was so sorry when it ended. What a sad but beautiful story. Everyone needs to read of the plight of abandoned animals and thrie feral offspring.
Commentary on today's world.......2002-07-04
To say that this book is magnificent is not giving it enough praise. To say that this book is so realistic is not enough. To say this book is a commentary on our world is not enough. This story of a feral cat is such that you are there with the cat, thru every positive and negative moment. You wonder just what is going to happen next. I laughed and cried and mainly worried throughout the novel. Such is the way of a great story teller. You live the book. You become the cat.
I could not put the book down, I was riveted to the story line from the beginning, following his growth, learning what he needed to survive thru trial and error. The ending was such a surprise to me.....I am encouraging everyone I know to read this book.
I learned as much from this book as the tomcat I believe. And to me, that is worth it. The care to detail Gordon took gives the belief you are there, with this cat, going thru all he has to, surviving. The human, Dave, is a caring man. Someone you want to cheer on as he attempts to aid in several ways.
I am going to insist my grandchildren, especially the oldest one, read this book. He will learn much and hopefully pass on what he has learned to others.
