Book Description

When retired policeman Herbert Molin is found brutally slaughtered on his remote farm in the northern forests of Sweden, police find strange tracks in the snowÉas if someone had been practicing the tango. Stefan Lindman, a young police officer recently diagnosed with mouth cancer, decides to investigate the murder of his former colleague, but is soon enmeshed in a mystifying case with no witnesses and no apparent motives. Terrified of the disease that could take his life, Lindman becomes more and more reckless as he unearths the chilling links between Molin’s death and an underground neo-Nazi network that runs further and deeper than he could ever have imagined.

4 out of 5 stars The Dance Goes On and On.......2007-09-23

As usual, Mankell makes the scenes in this book very realistic. One can feel the cold, smell the coffee, experience the fear. This is a complicated plot, knit tightly without a stitch dropped. No one tidies up all the clues and events like Mankell. I liked the Stefan Lindman character, found him very human, but I missed Wallender. Information about neo-Nazi movements in Sweden were interesting. The suspense goes on relentlessly - right to the end, but I felt the book would have been a bit better if it had been a tad shorter.

4 out of 5 stars "The past isn't dead, it isn't even past.".......2007-08-07

Stefan Lindman, a Swedish policeman in his late thirties who will be beginning treatment for cancer in a few weeks, learns that a former colleague, Herbert Molin--a man who had been something of a mentor to him--has been murdered in an exceptionally brutal way. Molin, always reserved, had almost completely cut himself off from human contact after retirement, retreating to the remote and isolated part of the Swedish countryside where his body has been found. Of what or whom was he afraid? Lindman, who, in the wake of his diagnosis, feels unable to make any other committment, gradually decides to join the investigation into Molin's death. The search for Molin's killer becomes an examination of Sweden's World War II past, the mystery of family relationships (particularly that of father to son), and the nature of death.

This novel, set as it is in a isolated and mountainous terrain as a bleak fall turns to winter, is indeed dark, but it is not without humor. The characters are remarkably fully developed, including that of the person who is the object of the police manhunt. Though coincidence plays perhaps too much of a role, this thought-provoking book is well worth reading.

4 out of 5 stars Neo-nazism in Sweden.......2006-10-24

Stefan Lindman is a policeman in southern Sweden. In the same week he hears that he has tongue cancer and that his ex-colleague Herbert Molin is brutally murdered. As a way to forget his cancer he uses the sick leave between the diagnosis and the start of radiotherapy to investigate the murder of Molin, who is slaughtered and left behind with a pattern of footsteps that gives the basic tango steps. He works alongside Giuseppe Larsson, the official leader of the investigation. Together they first discover that Herbert Molin was a convinced nazi until his death and they unravel a network of neo-nazies. But the murderer of Herbert Molin comes from his past. Already quite in the beginning of the book we meet the murderer, but his exact motives remain unclear until the end of the book.

The first book that I read after the Kurt Wallander series. And even though Stefan Lindman is no Kurt Wallander, he is an interesting enough character and the theme of the book (neo-nazism in Sweden) is interesting enough to read this book in a few days. Despite this, there was something missing: the plot did not grip me like the last few Mankells that I have read.

4 out of 5 stars Wallender isn't the only oddball cop in Sweden!.......2006-08-12

Mankell has evidently decided to give Inspector Kurt Wallender a vacation, and has come up with a very likeable new main character. Stefan Lindman is a cop in his late thirties in the town of Borås, single (though he has a lady friend), and without close friends. He also has been diagnosed with a malignancy in his tongue for which he's about to begin treatment. Stefan is, frankly, scared out of his wits, afraid he'll never see his fortieth birthday. To distract himself, he becomes involved in the investigation of the murder of a retired detective who had served for awhile as his mentor. The old man, now a recluse in the northern forests, was bullwhipped to death -- and the reader shortly finds out whodunit (Mankell gives this sort of thing away in every mystery novel he writes), but not who killed the victim's distant next-door neighbor a few days later. The murderer of the retired cop, and we get to know him pretty well and to understand his motivation, knows it certainly wasn't him, and feels bound to try to steer the police (who have assumed the two violent deaths must be connected) in the right direction. The author has some pungent things to say about Nazism in general and about the renascence of Aryan fascism in particular, especially in Sweden. In any case, I think we're going to see more of Lindman, and maybe also of his oddly named colleague, Giuseppe Larsson.

4 out of 5 stars Not my type of dance.......2006-04-04

This is another engrossing thriller from the Swedish king of murder mysteries, Henning Mankell.

Twin murders happen within days of each other in a remote isolated area of the forested Swedish hinterland. Mankell tells us a lot about the life of the first victim, Herbert Molin, an elderly ex-policeman and ex World War II nazi. He is murdered in the most grotesque fashion and a trail of his bloodied footprints is left behind marking out the steps of the Argentinean tango.

We are also introduced to his killer and his motives as he is about to depart from Sweden a day or two later. Very little is known about the second victim, nor the identity of his killer. What we are privy to however is that it is a different killer.

The main character is Stefan Lindberg, a policeman on sick leave with a cancerous growth in his mouth. He was a protégée of Molin and feels it is responsibility to help catch the murderer.

This story unfolds over a number of weeks and has the expected number of twists and turns which provide thought provoking material for the reader.

Well-written, well put together and a pleasure to read.

            Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

5 out of 5 stars The Lords of Destruction.......2003-12-09

This one was my favorite of the four books. It picks up immediately after Prisoner of the Horned Helmet. Gath of Baal is on a quest to find and destroy the Master of Darkness and tame the power of the Horned Helmet once and for all. Towards that end, he has taken the beautiful sorceress Cobra captive, intending to use her as a guide. Cobra, through her dark ties with the Master of Darkness, is able to remove the helmet, enabling Gath to wear the helmet without the threat of its imprisonment. But Cobra soon discovers that she has lost her power, and once again Gath is a prisoner of the helmet, which both makes him nearly invincible and yet feeds upon his great strength at the same time.

Meanwhile, The Nymph Queen of Pyram, Tiyy, a high priestess to the Master of Death emerges in the wake of Cobra's fall from power. The enchantments that have maintained her unnatural youth and beauty for so many years have weakened, and Tiyy senses the existence of a girl whose spirit might sustain her forever. This girl is Robin Lakehair, the girl that Gath loves, and now the only one capable of removing the helmet. Tiyy enlists the aid of the Lord of Destruction, Baskt, a primordial shark transformed into a manlike demon by the sacred black wine of the Master of Death. Tiyy charges Baskt with task of finding Robin Lakehair so that Tiyy might feed upon the girl's spirit, finally regaining her petulant evil beauty and unholy power.

All four of the books were flawless in my opinion, but this one respresented the high water mark for me. Like the others, the battles are violent, well orchestrated, savage but not mindless. Passions are rampant and destructive, lust, envy, rage. At this stage in the series, Gath is still dark and sometimes ambiguous, not yet quite equal with Conan's drving sense of honor, but more precisely measured with the destroying appetities of Kane. I have to say I fell in love with Cobra, who abandoned most of her evil ways at the end, becoming complicated and vulnerable. Tiyy was a consummate source of malevolence, a poisoned, corrupt beauty. Robin Lakehair tended to be the least developed of the characters, because she was simpler, more benevolent character with far fewer flaws and textures. The fight between Gath and Baskt was one of the best fights I've ever read, with Baskt far and away being one of my favorite villains ever.

I could not begin to recommend this book enough, if you enjoy this type of fantasy. It's a simpler, more elemental tale that hits you like a hammer. The primary experience is the writing, the journey, and their tribute to Frazetta. I don't know what ever happened to James Silke, But I mourn the fact that there were only the four books. Based upon the background I've read, the books came along at a time in which fantasy had lost some of its allure, and though there were originally plans to do more books, it just never happened. So treasure these four, and if you get your hands on them, do not give them up.

5 out of 5 stars C'mon, if you read the others, this is a must have.........2002-07-16

Great sequel, just like the others. He, in the mask of destruction, her, qwelling the beast within him. His axe, drinking the deformed enemies. Great, fun, Conan like adventure.

4 out of 5 stars Good entertainment (no more, no less).......2000-11-08

I had been a long time away from reading fantasy when I picked this one. It brought me back into fantasy stuff. The books strong points are it's agile storytelling and it's bizarre concepts. The author isn't excessively wordy, doesn't describe the settings and actions neither more nor less than he should. Concise writing. Good. He is also a little on the twisted side, as far as his villains are concerned. The evil on them is not comic book evil, or James Bond films evil - which are "light" villains. Silke's bad guys are "heavy"; really insane and mean. They don't need to boast to be cruel. There's a lot of sexuality in the book, which, added to the violence, would make me label it dark fantasy. And good one at that. For fans of the genre (who aren't disturbed by strong violence), I recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best books I've read.......1999-09-11

This book is one of the best books I've ever read. The whole series is just killer. If you like in your face and no-holds barred fantasy this is the series for you. I own the series once and lost it. I'm dying to get it again. the books have everything you could ask for in a series. Action, magic, suspense, and the good guys aren't always the nicest people nor do they always survive. For any SciFi/Fantasy buff this is the series to get. Have a nice day!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars It is a good book you will use often........2004-05-24

In the back of the book, you have a guide for all skills and what their characteristics are up to lvl 20, thats worth the price right there.

This means you can guestimate damage and strategize your skill investment and get an idea of what you max out or put 1 point into as well as where skills start to level off. i.e. you can compare the differences in the Sorc's cold shields. The second one has more defense bonus than the first and third. And we all know the "retaliate" thing is useless.

And how many times have you asked the question, which merc does holy freeze? or thorns? The book lists the mercs of act 2 norm, nightmare and hell. How about this question, how much strength does a shako need? Its in the book.

Granted it is not a 1.10 guide, but, if you play a lot like my friends and I, it is great to imagine a new character setup without looking at a website and getting their warped perception of what is an uber character. PLUS, you can look at the book during gameplay, I hate minimizing the screen to look at a website, doing that slows down gameplay.

Anyway, yes, it is old, but it is very good for understanding how some of the spells work and what benefit's they have to others. Pally auras, what are they? Does the radius grow when points are added? Granted 1.10 messed with this too :(

Newbies don't need the book, only old school, but if you've been around awhile, you know some skills go up and up and up and others level off, (like mana shield), it's nice to have the book around for experimenting. It lowers the anxiety of deciding skill point allocation (the most stressful part in the game).

I liked the book, and use it a lot, even though 1.10 kinda made things outdated. Still useful. I bought a second copy, and my brother uses it constantly. So thats 2 for 2 :) Anyway, if your a d2 fan, you'll love the back of the book, its cheaper than the ink you'll waste printing from a website.

I love D2, play a lot and refer to the book, it also makes a nice bathroom reader for those serious gamers.

Think about it, this book costs less than one 290, not that I have ever bought one, its worth it.

There is a person who didn't like the book, so they put like 5 bad reviews of the same review on the website? Whats that? If you play D2, you will pick up some stuff, even outdated a little as it is. Its like 80% accurate.

BART! If you make a 1.10 guide, I'll buy it!

To begin with, I believe that static, hardcopy guides to Diablo 2 are all useless, because the game is constantly being patched and changed. Monsters are given new abilities, the characteristics of certain levels are changed, and items are introduced, changed, or deleted altogether.

Therefore, the primary failing of this guide is that it is hopelessly out of date. The character building strategies are also hopelessly newbie-material - they provide the player with a 'balanced playing experience' but will give you a character that is much, much weaker than the best configurations.

This site has all of the up-to-date information, written by veteran players, that you could ever want to know, along with a forum populated by highly experienced and skilled players to help you. There is no reason to buy a guide when you can get much, much better for free.

Grading it on the basis of a hard-copy guide (that you can have open in front of you while playing, the sole advantage it has over diabloii.net), I suppose it isn't bad, which is why it got 2 stars instead of 1. While some of the information (such as items) is out of date, most of its tables are accurate and useful references. The strategies for using certain skills are also good to know - but keep in mind that these may not be the best, most efficient strategies.

I would only consider buying this book if you are absolutely, 100% new to the game.

...Warning! This guide will be of use to those who only want a very general overview of the new Druid and Assassin character classes.... HOWEVER, the rest of the book is hopelesss outdated, seeing as it was written for the 1.07 version of D2 and the game is currently in its 1.09d patch...with promises of another ( 1.10 version ) patch sometime in June/July of 2002. This guide went in the trash when Blizzard released their 1.08 patch a mere three weeks into LoD's public release. Since then everything has changed vastly. Character skills have been altered so the tables are totally wrong. Sets and Uniques....well just about all of them have been changed, some beyond recognition. For example the unique round shield orginally a + skills necro item is now a sorcess skills item with total different mod's. As for the unique Archon staff ( an elite weapon), well it no longer exsists; instead it's name has been assigned to the unique Giant Thresher, which has totally different mod's and is used by a totally diffent kind of character! Most of the Runewords and Crafted items spells ( advertized as new for LoD ) have either been blocked or changed... about 90% of them weren't even in the guide to begin with! Just about everything is changed so completely that this guide would have to be TOTALLY rewritten ( perferably by someone who has actually played the game, not just read the fact sheets Blizzard passed down to them ). Even nearly a year later I see this guide in various stores and have to warn off people who want to get it... Don't get me wrong, LoD is a great game to try ( I play about 20-25 hrs per week on Realms ), but this guide is very outdated. Hopefully, someone will wake up at Brady and rewrite this book so it reflects the true picture of what D2LoD is now like on the Realms. Well, off to kill Diablo and his brothers... *evil chuckle* ...bye...

            1 out of 5 stars Another dissapointment.......2001-09-13

This book (supposedly) provides info on the new features of the expansion set. The only really useful parts of it are the tables in the last part, and this does not work to those who haven't downloaded the 1.08 or 1.09 patch. There are many things in the guide that have changed after the last patch, including new items, rune words and crafted items.

If you have web access, search there for the info you need. This guide is a complete waste of time and money.
