Book Description

New York Times bestselling author Lisa Gardner is at the top of her form as she takes us on a desperate manhunt for a killer who preys upon his victims’ minds—just before he claims their lives.

What do you do when a killer targets the people you love the most? When he knows how to make them vulnerable? When he knows the same about you?

These are the questions that haunt FBI Special Agent Pierce Quincy. The police say his daughter’s death was an accident. Quincy will risk everything to learn the truth—and there’s only one person willing to help. Ex-cop Rainie Connor had once been paired professionally—and personally—with the brilliant FBI profiler. He helped her through the darkest days of her life.

Now it’s time for Rainie to return the favor. But this killer is like none these two hard-boiled pros have ever encountered. This twisted psychopath has an insatiable hunger for revenge...and for fear. As the clock ticks down to one unspeakably intimate act of vengeance, the only way Rainie can unmask this killer is to step directly in his murderous path. She will become a murder waiting to happen. She will be... the next accident.

4 out of 5 stars HE ALWAYS HURTS THE ONES YOU LOVE..........2007-09-15

When FBI agent and profiler Pierce Quincy 's troubled daughter, Mandy, dies in what is labeled as a DWI accident, Quincy is not buying it. He engages the services Rainie Conner, an ex-cop who is now in business as a private investigator. Pierce and Rainie are not strangers to each other, as they have been involved both professionally and personally before.

When Rainie begins her investigation, she doesn't hold out much hope that Mandy's death was anything other than what it was classified. As her investigations develops, however, it seems that Mandy's death may not have been as it was made to appear. Moreover, Quincy has started getting a series of disturbing telephone calls and has become convinced that what is happening in his present has its roots in his past. As the body count mounts, suspicion falls on Pierce, who is locked in a battle of wits with a clever and cunning psychopath hell-bent on destroying Pierce's entire family, one by one.

This is a clever and ingenious plot-driven thriller that will keep the reader turning its pages. There are numerous twists and turns in what is essentially a cat and mouse game between Quincy and his nemesis. The only problem with the book is the ending, as it is just a little too far fetched and seems to be a race to the finish. Still, the pleasure is in the journey that the book takes you. I am looking forward to reading some of the author's other books.

3 out of 5 stars Predictable, but Entertaining.......2007-09-14

Even though I didn't like Rainie from the last novel, I thought this one would be better because it deals with Quincy. I liked this book much better than the previous one in the series, but I thought that some things should've been presented in a different order. I thought it didn't make sense that Quincy didn't think that his daughter's drunk driving accident was an accident. The daughter on life support was a sub plot in the previous novel because she had driven drunk. I think that the accident should've been questioned after the events began to unfold througout the novel. Also, just because the passenger's seat belt is warped and stretched, doesn't mean that someone was sitting in the car with Mandy, the drunk driver, and set up the accident . It just means that at sometime in the vehicle's life, the driver hit the brakes to avoid hitting someone or hit something and the seat belt held the passenger in place. And then, once again, the motives for revenge were a let down. The book was pretty predictable, and this wasn't the best book, but it was entertaining.

4 out of 5 stars You ever wonder where your next accident will happen.......2007-02-23

I Like all Lisas' books, and this one did not disappoint.

5 out of 5 stars detective story.......2007-02-11

I love the way Lisa Garndner writes and her stories, this book was no exception. It is a very fast paced story and a great read.

3 out of 5 stars Only Fair.......2006-11-04

THE NEXT ACCIDENT is just an okay suspense thriller. As others have pointed out, Lisa Gardner is a good plotter, but a little weak when it comes to characterization and believable dialogue. The lead female character is more exasperating than sympathetic in many scenes. Also, there are some scenes in this book that are rather drawn out and predictable. I guessed the identity of the killer halfway throught the book, and was not satisfied with the out-of-left-field explanation of how he masterminded the crime.

I've read some of Gardner's more recent work, and found it much better than THE NEXT ACCIDENT. Also keep in mind that this book is a sequel of sorts to an earlier book, "The Third Victim," and you should probably read that novel before this one to fully appreciate the characters and their relationships to one another.

This novel is well written and moderately entertaining, but there are much better books out there, including Gardner's THE SURVIVORS CLUB and ALONE.

3 out of 5 stars For strong readers.......2006-06-24

We read this book as part of the creative writing class that I teach, and I was quite surprised at how this book played out with my young students (aged 8-12). I wanted to introduce them to a fantasy novel that many of them had never heard of and was amused to show them that Rowling hadn't actually invented the word "Muggles" (it's the name of the main character in "The Gammage Cup"). What I did find surprising is that many of my students found this book a difficult read and were confused about many different aspects of the story. As an adult, I quite enjoyed the humor in this book. In particular, I loved the mistaken identification of what is a "painting" versus what is a "family tree; but case in point--for many of my students just didn't get this joke and I find once a young reader loses interest in a book, they just give up on it. I think part of the problem is that the characters in this book do not paint strong visuals in the minds of modern readers. I find many of my students live in a highly-visualized world; perhaps this is a case of their imaginations not being so active or strong as the children in author Carol Kendall's day (or for that matter, mine), but nonetheless, perhaps this book would benefit from stronger illustrations that helped represent the otherwise well-conceived characters. I expected this to be a hit with my kids--I was wrong, but I still like this book and recommend it for those readers with strong vocabularies and big appetites for fantasy novels.

5 out of 5 stars Nonconformists -- remember them? .......2005-07-11

Merriam-Webester defines nonconformist this way: "1. a person who does not conform to an established church; especially: one who does not conform to the Church of England and 2 : a person who does not conform to a generally accepted pattern of thought or action.

When Carol Kendall wrote this book in the late 1950's, it was partly a response the scourge of McCarthyism. Now, in an America dominated by right wing zealots, with McCarthy's political apologists and heirs in firm control of every aspect of our government, this lovely, imaginative fantasy is more pertinent than ever. In the Land Between the Mountains, home of the peaceful, practical Minnipins, five outcasts, Muggles (more on this name in a moment), Walter the Earl, Curley Green, Mingy and Gummy, defy the rule of the reactionary Periods who run the little village of Slipper-on-the-Water and end up saving the village and the entire Land Between the Mountains from an ancient, deadly enemy. Gently satirical, but occassionaly stinging, the novel makes a sweetly reasoned plea for acceptance of the dreamers, the artists, and the misfits of society, as they often contain the very qualities they are accused of lacking: courage, praticality and grit. It is also a statement about the need for imagination and creativity as indipensible qualities for any civilization.

Kendall had a gift of naming to nearly rival Tolkien and her sister fantasist Mary Norton. Some of her inventions, like the names Muggles and Minnipins, have mysteriously appeared unaltered or slightly modified in the works of lesser writers like J. K. Rowling and Roald Dahl. Coincidence? You decide. No matter, "The Gammage Cup" endures. A golden fantasy from a golden age of children's books.

4 out of 5 stars The gammage cup good book.......2004-05-05

                    The Gammage Cup

I like the Gammage Cup. It's about a group of people sent away from their village for being different. I like the Ending but the start was not that great but it was still interesting. The characters were pretty interesting. They have strange names and habits. In the book there is one cool war scene. But the book is not all about war; there is only one scene of war and the other scenes have cool things in it you have to read it to find out. I GIVE THIS BOOK 4 OUT OF 5 STARS. This Book is great and I hope you like it.

5 out of 5 stars A ride back into your youth.......2003-04-07

I remember reading this book in elementary school. I read it so many times that it lingered in the back of my mind all through high school and into adulthood.
When my girls were what I thought old enough for me to read the book to them, I went out and found the book and bought it.
As I was surfing through the vast array of books, here it was again, the Muggles, with all their differences, colored front doors and curiousity for things not on the straight and narrow, words that didn't follow the rules set out by the high ranking Periods. The book always pulled at me, causing me to see that each of us are different and we need to celebrate these differences, because after all, that is what makes our world so unique.
Purchase the book, check it out from your local library, if they don't carry the book, make them purchase it. Read it yourself and float back to those lazy adolesence days, read it to your children and bask in their joy of a new adventure and remember when you too were in awe of the simple joy of a well written story.

                    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2002-12-30

This is a superb example of fine fantasy, and one of those "children's" books which adults will thoroughly enjoy. The story of the "misfits" who save their village is well-written, with many very clever and charming observations and turns of phrase (e.g., "When you say what you think, be sure to think what you say."). The characters are very appealing, and the story is quite moving. Read it--you'll love it!

FILLED WITH IMMENSE characters, this thrilling medieval fantasy filled with moral complexity and vision announces the arrival of a special new writing talent.

Phaedra, the beautiful daughter of a baron, has been visited in dreams by an elusive knight for almost as long as she can remember. And when his presence becomes a reality, she is forced to choose him and a new life over her home and her father. But this sets off a chain of events that she could not have foreseen—a battle between good and evil, which is in turn violent and psychologically compelling. This stunning novel grapples with the huge themes of life, and turns the reader’s expectations upside down again and again, with one vertiginious plunge after another.

This book is set in a King-Arthur type age. There is one kingdom and several regions each with a baron leading them. The main character is a baron's daughter, Phaedra. Phaedra comes of age and has several suitors. She marries someone her father dislikes, and she moves to his region.

After Phaedra moves to the castle, the storyline becomes dark. She starts seeing shadows and people close to her die. She feels aliented from the servants and accosted by the ghosts/demons/whatever in the castle. She begins to question what dark powers exist in the castle and if her husband plays a role in them.

I haven't reached the end of this book (about 20 pages left to go,) but I really like this book because it's different than ones I have read. My favorite books are romantic fantasy with a female lead (Sharon Shinn - Angelica, Angel Seeker, Samaria; Robin McKinley - Blue Sword; Garth Nix - Abhorsen, Liriel, Sabriel.)

This book is different. It's not an overt fantasy. The "shadows" that Phaedra is seeing seem to be madness. Not only is the fantasy played down, but romance is not a large part of the story. The story displays the ups and downs of marriage as in Mists of Avalon. Phaedra suffers when her husband is gone at war for months. Friendships become important when her husband leaves and they eventually end up saving her.

Overall, the writing is good and the story is great. It's a realistic fantasy that becomes more and more fantastic at the end. I loved the friendships and relationships in this book.

                    1 out of 5 stars Well...it's pretty!.......2006-06-06

I bought this book on a whim in the bookstore because the cover was absolutely beautiful and let me tell you, I learned my lesson. This book sounded so good and I had such high expectations for it. It sounded original and fresh and intruigeing. It started off okay and it was a bit interesting, even if the main character was slightly dull. It seemed as though things were rushed in some parts and dragged on in others. The writing was slow and boring and nothing happened in the plot. I didn't care what happened to the characters and my attention seemed elswhere. I honestly could not finish this book. I made it to page 300 and something before I could no longer force myself to sit down and read. That is only the third book I have ever not finished, along with The Golden Compass and A Game Of Thrones (which are terrible, if you were wondering). I ended up giving this book away, although it was missing a cover. That I had to save, it was too gorgeous! All in all, this book was not good.

5 out of 5 stars Fictional and Suspenseful.......2005-10-21

The Cup of the World is a great fictional, suspenseful novel. In a time of Princes and Princesses, Queens and Kings, Knights and Lords; there was black magic brooding. John Dickinson writes a tale of exceptional experience, of growing up and following ones heart instead of ones head. Truly a book that can be read and read, and still read again with out knowing everything The Cup of the World has hidden with in its pages. Based on one girl's, Phaedra's, time growing up and discovering herself along with others she thought she knew, this is a must read for any teenaged girl on the brink of insanity.

Wishing not to marry just anyone who comes along, Phaedra, daughter of the Warden of Trant, trusts her life to a man she loves, a man she had only met inside of her dreams. She runs away and finds herself in the lands across the vast sea starting, a now evident, civil war in the face. But what she finds out about her love, her husband, is that he uses black magic, like she was warned his family did. Her Father, and a few other people she knows and cares for, used this black magic too, and every one of them used it and paid terrible prices over her. But there isn't safety anywhere, will she ever find a place to protect her son, and will she ever see anyone she loved again?

Such excitement happens with in The Cup of the World's pages that it's a read that seems never ending. Accompany this book with its sequel, The Widow and the King, which is a must read if the mysteries still have a riveting effect after reading Phaedra's story. John Dickinson is a captivating writer, writing tales of heroines; tales of love; tales of why one shouldn't mess with things they don't understand; and how to over come some of the horrors a persons life could bring. So if a fantasy novel is a favorite, then this book will be up in the top 10. All and all, The Cup of the World is a book that could easily become a favorite that could be read over and over again.

                    3 out of 5 stars Great Plot!.......2005-07-01

This book is the type of book you want to read if you are looking for plot quality alone. This plot is beautiful, and well defined. The writing is a gem, though at times a bit confusing. The reasons that I couldn't give this lovely book a higher rating, is because of the characters. These characters weren't drawn out, and you never got to know them. At the end of the book, I knew as much about Phaedra as I had at the beginning of the book. Because of this, as well as because of the fact he never truly opened Phaedra up, I found myself not caring overmuch for Phaedra, or for the other characters. This was a shame because they were really lovely characters. Yet they were like china dolls-lovely to look at, dull to play with.
I also thought that this author could have switched around narratives. This author is a very powerful one- he has the ability to switch around narratives, yet he doesn't. Because of this, we never got a lot of good insite to other characters thoughts and personalitys, except for from Phaedra one-sided, slightly biased view.
Overall, this book is great, especially, if you want to see what a rich fantasy plot looks like. In the way of personalities however-I would look to someone else for a good read in this area, such as JK Rowling, author of the Harry Potter Books, or Juillet M. author of the Sevenwaters Trilogy, the first (and best) book being Daughter of the Forest.

3 out of 5 stars strong 3, good detail and atmosphere, character a bit weak.......2005-05-30

Cup of the World centers on Phaedra, daughter and only child of the Warden of Trant, an all-important land/fortress in a land with a long history of internal warfare. Her combination of looks, inheritance, and intelligence makes her the prime bridal catch, even one of the two princes is her suitor, but she rejects them all for two basic reasons: fear (of losing her independence and her life as her mother did, dying in childbirth) and love (of a strange man who comes to her in her dreams). Her father gives in as he has to her desires ever since she threw a hunger strike at him when he considered remarrying. Her marriage is resolved when she slips away with her dream man, who it turns is real and has some strange abilities. Her marriage, her choice of husband (though she didn't know who he was at the time), and her rejection of many of the land's proudest men spark political and personal problems. This is the first third or so of the book and the rest follows Phaedra through the years of warfare between her husband and the king. During that time, she becomes pregnant, gives birth to a son, begins to uncover some of the secrets underlying her husband's strange powers, and realizes her newborn child is being threatened by otherworldly creatures.
The plot intertwines several story strands and does so smoothly. We never leave Phaedra's point of view, which dilutes somewhat the impact of some of what is reported to her. The war is mostly background given in second hand reports or letters--those looking for the typical fantasy descriptions of big battles would best look elsewhere. The politics are relatively narrowly focused but not dumbed down. Chess is a frequent metaphor and an apt one throughout the novel--there are levels and levels of play and some characters look ahead better than others.
We spend a lot of time with Phaedra but despite that she never really held together as a particularly strong character for me--I never felt a sense of true depth to her. She wasn't poorly drawn, but she was more an adequate mover of plot than an interesting character in her own right. A statement I'd make about just about all of the characters. They served their purposes in the story, but I can't say I cared much about what happened to any of them (part of the reason for the three rather than a four). The same holds true for the major antagonist of the story, which is too bad because there was a lot of potential in his creation and basic description.
The detail and atmospheric description made up for some of this. It was mostly well-paced but started to lag a bit in some areas toward the end. The ending itself seemed a bit rushed or abrupt, where too much information was recapped by characters rather than allowed to flow naturally out of the story.
The same strengths of story and atmosphere combined with improved depth of character would make for a strong second novel. Somewhat recommended.

                        Book Description

                        THE CUP OF DEATH

Mortals, elves, magicians, and dragons represent both the world's future and its evil past. Who of them, in this battle of life and death, will ultimately triumph?

Book One of the Chronicles of the Dragons of the Magi begins millennia after the Great War, after those who had been placed in stasis are awakened. Through the labor of the First Seer and the Five Great Elemental Dragons, a simpler way of life has been created. The technology that led to worldwide destruction has been replaced by magic, while the old knowledge remains within the lost Shelter Cities.

Into this world of the ten island continents, a division between those who follow the path of life and those who follow death reemerges. Into this troubling time is born a young Magi, blessed with powers beyond his eighteen years. As an apprentice necromancer, he submits to training and tests, and quickly advances through the Guild's many degrees. But even as his powers grow, who knows if the young man's magic will prove great enough to defeat the Evil Alliance.

3 out of 5 stars So much potential (mellion108).......2003-07-21

Cormac MacDermot, High King of Ireland, is cast out of his homeland and wanders the countryside with his slavegirl Brigid (Biddy), and his faithful wolfhound, Podraig, in search of the magic cup and a magical princess. He leaves behind his dying father and his evil witch stepmother and encounters assasins, magical folk, allies, and pirates on his adventure. Although his lust for Biddy grows stronger as she develops into a lucious young woman, Cormac tries to convince himself that she is his foster daughter rather than a potential lover. The two bicker and argue throughout the tale. As Cormac grows closer to completing his quest, he begins to realize that young Biddy may not be the person he--and she--always thought she was.

This is the first book by Greeley that I've read, and that perhaps colors my opinion of his writing. Greeley includes a few pages of notes at the end of the novel to explain the origins of this ancient Celtic myth and how it later became translated and changed into a more Westernized and romanticized version of the Arthurian legends. This is perhaps the most interesting part of the novel, and the reason I rank this at 3 stars. I also appreciated Greeley's feel for the Irish countryside; his characters move in and out of these rich sounding villages and kingdoms, and that helps to create a very vivid atmosphere for the book. However, much of the novel focuses on Cormac fighting his desire for Biddy, on Biddy biting back at Cormac with an acid tongue, and on the two of them playing a will-they-won't-they sexual intrigue. There are a great many pages devoted to how some young wench looks in a wet gown. I found this to be quite tiresome, especially with lines such as "One could, after all, eat cheese and kiss a girl." I like the Arthurian legends, and I was looking forward to reading something that came from an even older myth. This is not the novel that I hoped to get lost in because I was constantly rolling my eyes at the descriptions of sexual chastity or voracity. This is, however, a quick read that most readers should be able to finish in an afternoon. You might want to read the afterward by Greeley first because that contains quite a bit of interesting history of the legend on which this tale is based.

                              4 out of 5 stars Must Read!.......2002-04-14

I've read this book over and over and still can't get enough of this version of the search for the holy grail. Brigid is likably annoying and Cormac's brooding makes me want to smack him in the head. The point is that it is the type of storytelling that gets a reader involved in the story.

The Magic Cup is wonderful. It is a romantic story with a plot that hinges on a prophecy much as does the movie Willow. The girl is adorable, the guy is great and both are believable characters. It is somewhat reminiscent of Morgan Llewellyn in its strong ties to historical events and the author's obvious familiarity with all the specifically Irish elements of myth. Lovers of her books and also of Diana L. Paxson are likely to treasure this hard-to-find book.
