Book Description

While driving along a darkened stretch of Florida road, Travis McGee and friend Meyer encounter a young girl wearing little more than a frightened look as she leaps out from the shadows directly in line with their headlights. A skillful swerve saves the girl but finds McGee and friend upside down in ten feet of swamp water. Not two minutes later they are dodging bullets fired from a speeding pickup. McGee reports these unusual events to the local sheriff and finds himself arrested for murder!

5 out of 5 stars "Often when you are the most hopeful, nothing works.".......2007-08-25

Before reading The Long Lavender Look, I would have argued that Bright Orange for the Shroud was the best Travis McGee book. After careful consideration, I have to admit that The Long Lavender Look steals the crown, even though they both remain extremely entertaining. Since MacDonald sets a high standard for hard-boiled detection, this should tell you that I liked this book very much indeed.

McGee swerves to avoid a nearly naked girl running across the road, and ends up in a swamp of more than one kind. In order to clear his name, he has to find his way to the center of a secret at the heart of a small town Florida police department.

Smart. Fair. Entertaining. Easy to find at used book stores for a small bit of change. What's not to like?

5 out of 5 stars The Long Lavender Look.......2007-08-11

Master "helper" Travis keeps coming up with frightened damsels. And thankfully, Meyer is frequently there to offer advice and consent.

5 out of 5 stars A long, lovely read for McGee.......2004-11-01

While I still find "Flash of Green" to be my favorite John D. MacDonald book, there's something so appealing about the Travis McGee series that it keeps me coming back to them. And "The Long Lavender Look" is just another addition to the spectrum of colors that his novels get their titles from. Also "The Long Lavender Look" has such a gripping opening sequence of events, and such an array of fascinating characters, that you cannot put this mystery down.

And while I know that MacDonald enjoyed popularity in his time, it seems that his popularity is running out of gas. I hope I am wrong because he is horribly overlooked.

5 out of 5 stars Cool mystery.......2004-07-12

John D. MacDonald's mysteries are as tasty as the hamburgers of the same name! I love all the Magee books!

5 out of 5 stars Probably one of the top three McGees.......2004-07-08

Early every summer, I knock back one McGee mystery before July and, try as I might to resist, I usually end up reading at least one or two more by the time fall arrives. I have Hemingway that's unread; I have Mailer and Faulkner that continually remains uncracked; and I've been meaning to tackle "The Corrections" forfreakingever. And yet... I can't help it, there's something about sun-bleached days and cricket-filled nights that lends itself incredibly well to this series.

This is definitely one of the best of the McGee adventures. Trav and Meyer run afoul of backwoods law enforcement and McGee spends the rest of the book stripping away layers of vicious, small-town corruption with the admirable ease of a man peeling a banana.

All the great MacDonald hallmarks are here: there's a surprising amount of eroticism, several tense face-offs and twists and turns, some slick legal manuvering, a couple of pretty scary discoveries and a cast of cool characters: the top-heavy, man-hungry waitress Betty; a pill-popping psycho with a badge and a prostitution ring; and, best of all, a crazed, superhumanly strong, swamp-bred superbabe who likes to lift up Pintos and coo in womens' ears when she's torturing them. Added to which is a great ending, plus a nice vacation from the nautical details and dense business technicalities which are staples of the series but which, as proven here, don't have to be on full display every time around.

It began the way all McGee's adventures began. From left field. Only this time it was right in front of his car. This lovely young thing, wearing little more than a frightened look, streaked out of darkness into his headlights. McGee hit the brakes, missed the nymphet's tawny haunch by one micro-second, and landed upside down in ten feet of swamp water. Two minutes later, with McGee upright and limping along the deserted Florida road, someone zoomed by in an old truck and took a couple of shots at him. Well, this was not McGee's idea of Southern hospitality. So he went to the local sheriff to complain--and found himself arrested for murder. Then...well, read it yourself.

2 out of 5 stars I guess I'm just not the intended audience.......2007-08-22

I have to confess. Hard-boiled detective stories aren't really my thing. The stilted, deliberate dialogue style, the delving looks into a gumshoe's innermost thoughts and feelings, the archaic views of machoism and improbable heroics don't do much for me. I'm not sure Travis McGee's adventures can exactly be termed hard-boiled detective stories, since McGee isn't a detective, but the style was quite reminiscent. I read this because someone gave it to me, and I can't let a good mystery story leave my hands without reading it. Simply can't.

I was pleasantly surprised, although not overly so. Maybe if I'd read the first eleven color-theme-titled books, I'd be a bit more in touch with McGee's character and not find him to be an individual of such conflicting personalities. Maybe if I was a man, McGee's casual dismissal of most women either as unintelligent fluff pieces to be protected or scheming vixens to be resisted wouldn't bother me so much. Maybe if I could lower myself to the common denominator, I wouldn't notice that the book wasn't particularly thought-provoking or intellectually stimulating. It kept me busy for a couple of days (mainly because it was so forgettable that I suddenly found myself with time to do pretty much anything other than reading), but I won't be seeking out any more of Mr. MacDonald's writing. Average at best.

                  5 out of 5 stars Finally!!!!.......2006-11-04

I've followed a pagan path for 7 years. I've blown through various internet "101" courses left and right. I reached a point on my path that I wanted to start getting ready to teach my children when they were old enough. I wanted to spare them the hours upon hours of taking notes from dozens of books, transferring to note cards, then constructing them into a format that was condusive to learning. Guess what....that's what this book is!!!! By the way Mr. Batty...where were you more than a year ago when I started that "little" project?!?!?!? If you remember back to high school textbooks...this is the textbook that would have been in a Wicca/Witchcraft 101 class. The format is unbelievable!! It has study questions at the end of each section and even a comprehensive "Final Exam". It's designed for a teacher as well as a student of the craft. I've started a magical group and we'll use this as a textbook in our education course!! I've ordered dozens upon dozens of books off of amazon.com and other sites. I've never left a review for any of them. But I couldn't sit back without giving this one the recognition it deserves. This book is new and I actually think I'm the first reviewer. Scroll back up...and click that order button if you are new to the craft or a veteran wanting to teach others. There isn't another book like this...you won't be disappointed!!!

4 out of 5 stars A must-have for fans of the Warlock series..........1999-08-24

Okay, it must be understood that this is part of an ongoing series and as such has alot of back story holding it up. This book is the continuing story of the Gallowglass family that has it's origins in the book "Escape Velocity" and actually starts in "The Warlock In Spite Of Himself". This is the story of Gregory Gallowglass, the youngest of Rod & Gwen's four chuldren, and his first steps towards independance. This story also tracks the witch Finister who has been the nemesis of the Gallowglass children for five books now. The story begins where "Quicksilver's Knight" left off, with Gregory escorting the witch Finister to the Royal Coven. Stasheff, as always, recaps events from the previous books to fill in any reader who might not be reading the entire series. The story is a fun read, an excellent example of science-fantasy, where ESPers are seen as witches & warlocks and an entire future colony has gone SCA, for real.

3 out of 5 stars Wellllll, if your a fan of the Warlock series..........1999-08-10

Every once in a while a book comes along that is a must read...This one isn't.

Well, OK perhaps that is a little harsh, but unless your a diehard fan of the WARLOCK series, this is not the book to judge Christopher Stasheff by. As he says in his Note to the Reader, "The author is very much aware that the events in this book are extremely unlikely, if not downright impossible..."

Now with that out of the way it IS a fun book and if you follow the series, you can tell through the foreshadowing that there will be some interesting developments in the future. Keeping this in mind, (I did!) you will find that the book is best thought of as a transitional piece to allow certain plot line to emerge.

5 out of 5 stars Stasheff really knows his stuff.......1999-07-22

This is different from most of Stasheff's book's. It starts right after Quicksliver's Knight. With Gregory poised to fall in love with the most unexpected person. I think this book is extermly well written. Stasheff's knowledge of psychology really shined through. I was glad that Magnus was included in this book and not just mentioned. It' was also nice to see that he remebered some of the smaller details form previous books. This a book that I will be glad to read again and again. In fact I already have!

This book is great. It has the alphabet and has pictures with words under them like a picture of a cat and C-a-t. Also this book can be used for Spanish too. For instance, uno, dos, and other three letter words.

I Can Spell Words With Three Letters is a wonderful book! My son (who is 4, but doesn't talk yet) loves to spell his favorite words with this flip book. I really like how it contains three alphabets for kids to flip through to spell with so that even if they can't write yet, they can still practice spelling. I also like how the word is on the back of each picture so the kids can check their work. My only concern is that the flip cards seem flimsier than they were in my original copy, but I like that the book now has a velcro closure so that the cards won't get bent as easily. But it is well worth the money. In fact we got our second copy to give as a gift.

This book is great! Before this book, my daughter was able to recognize letter sounds but did not understand the concept of linking the sounds together to make a word. By flipping three different piles of the alphabet, she was able to see, and therefore understand, this concept. I recommend this book to any pre-readers.

5 out of 5 stars Fairy tales are us.......2003-03-26

There are dozens of fairy tale retellings in the fantasy market nowadays, but none better than this one - it is my favorite. (I'm including Robin McKinley!) It's wonderful, so read it if you can find it.

                  5 out of 5 stars Cinderella re-done.......2003-01-24

I first read this book in highschool, but have since read it a number of times. The story of Cinderella will never get old to me, and this is much like the original only a little more indepth than the version most of us heard as children. I fell in love with both of the main characters, spent my time wanting nothing but the best to work out for them, and was so thrilled when like every good story it had a happy ending. Well worth reading!

5 out of 5 stars very underrated book in the fairy tale genre.......2001-05-09

I first read this in high school and am sad to see it's out of print, now. It's a Cinderella story with an unexpected twist. Early on the fairy godmother is revealed to not be what she seems. The characters are all complex with their own motives. None are purely good or purely bad, unlike the two-dimensional kind you find in most fairy tales. It's well worth it if you can find a used copy, for kids or just adult-kids.

5 out of 5 stars Spelling Made Fun.......2003-03-26

Just like I Can Spell Three Letter Words, I Can Spell Four Letter Words is a big hit with my son. He's been spelling with both books for several years and loves being able to check his spelling by flipping over the picture card to see if he's right. There are three sets of cards for the alphabet and three sets of pictures for kids to learn with. The pictures are colorful and fun. These books helped my son (who has a speech disorder) learn to spell so he could have another way to communicate with us prior to his being able to talk. It really is worth the money to buy these books! I love them!

4 out of 5 stars Compact and Easy-to-Use.......2000-09-27

Four-letter words say it all (! ). They really do cover a good range of vowel and consonant combinations, and introduce new spellers to the most common spellings for short and long vowel words.

For my bilingual children, this and the 3-letter volume have provided a stress-free way to practice English spelling -- they told me story-time could wait, they'd rather spell a few more words! They enjoy the colorful design and compact size.

I also appreciate the fairly sturdy construction, and the double-spiral binding and velcro fastening, which allow children to mix-and-match letters without the risk and mess of losing individual pieces.

Very good book for the the newly engaged in such practices. Spells (no pun intended)it all out in very simple terms from A to Z and gives one the basics to a better understanding of a very old and rather mysterious religious belief system. I myself being rather ignorant of the Pagan beliefs found this book very entertaining, lighthearted and informative. The book says, practice makes perfect. It took 20 years of hard study to become a Druid, one that practiced Celtic rites and rituals so go figure.

I first met Mrs. Warlock at the Annual Harlem Bookfair. She was very kind and gave me a lot of pointers to help children develop a desire to learn. The book is very insightful and gives you various examples on how to engage your child while learning. It is obvious that Mrs. Warlock was a great mentor to new teachers because her warmth is felt through the instruction in the book. I felt as if I was being equiped with the necessary tools to make my classroom (my home) a success. It was also helpful for me the see the suggested benchmarks that should be met by children from 5-7. This book is a great resource for parents and I look forward to her next book.
