Best book on the topic.......2003-09-03
I read this book when it first came out several years ago and I still think it is the best book available on the topic of pregnancy loss because it is so intelligently written and profoundly moving. Its not just a book about loss, its a book about life! I have recently read a couple of negative reviews of this book--which seem to be based solely on the fact that the author includes abortion in several short sections of the book. I was shocked and dismayed to see that someone called the book "insensitive" for including abortion--clearly that reviewer is a very angry person! I hope that no one will be discouraged from reading this book because of that, because the compassion the author brings to both the topics of miscarriage, still birth and abortion is very healing for all.
Must read if you've had a loss!!!.......2003-04-21
This book is broad, covering abortion as well as miscarriage. If you have had a miscarriage and can get past the pain of dealing with the fact that some people intentionally end their pregnancies, this is a great book. It covers how other cultures deal with pregnancy loss and gives you ways to work through your feelings. I have read many books about miscarriage looking for answers, a way to get through what I was feeling. This was the last book that I needed to read, it managed to give me a sense of closure that I never thought I'd find. I got this book from the library and am now buying it to have around, for the days when I need a lift.
An insensitive approach.......2002-09-08
My son was stillborn at 26 weeks, and this was one of the books I looked at in the aftermath. I had been too upset to notice the word "abortion" in the title, so it wasn't until I was paging through the book -- and reading about a woman who chose to abort her child -- that it hit me. The author was actually treating what happened to me -- my very much wanted child died due to a cord accident -- with those women who choose to abort their children. I do think that a book dealing with the emotional aftermath of abortion would be a good topic to explore, and it might be very helpful to those women how have had abortions. But I view the death of my child as an unbearable and tragic loss, and to treat my loss the same as an abortion is not only tacky, its cruel.
Don't need anymore therapy.......2000-11-04
The most helpful and healing part of this book was when the author shared her own experiences of how she came to peace with her own infertility and losses. There was too much about how pregnancy loss shed light on the unresolved childhood issues of her patients. LONG before I ever tried to get pregnant, I did my time in therapy (years of it) where I uncovered my childhood hurts and forgave my parents, etc etc etc. Yes infertility pushes some buttons about being a teenager for me for sure, but what I want the most right now are words to help me deal with the present pain of the losses from infertility and miscarriage. The author's personal experience on the last 2 pages was worth getting the book for those of us who don't need anymore therapy.
Comforting, Insightful..........2000-10-12
I found this book to be a great help to me during the months following my miscarriage. Its focus is broad, but I found that helpful because it made me feel less alone. My husband read the section on men and found it very moving. It is not a how-to book so much as it is a book that touches your soul.

Although Luis Buñuel, one of the great filmmakers of the century, was notoriously reluctant to discuss his own work in public, he wrote--and wrote well--on many subjects over the years. This collection proceeds chronologically, from poetry and short stories written in Buñuel's youth in Spain to an essay written in 1980, not long before his death. Newly translated into English, the writings offer startling insights into the filmmaker's life and thought.
The earliest pieces came well before Buñuel joined the Surrealist movement in Paris and created the landmark film Un chien andalou with Salvador Dalí. Yet these and the early Surrealist writings reveal the inventiveness of the mind that would later create such masterpieces of cinema as L'Age d'or, Los olvidados, Viridiana, The Milky Way, The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie, and That Obscure Object of Desire.
Later writings, which include screenplays and reflections on his own and others' films, illuminate many aspects of Buñuel's career, as well as the ways of thinking and perceiving that underlie his unique cinematic style. The final essay by this extraordinary artist sums up his view of the world--still vibrant and full of contradictions--at the end of his life.

The "return" of the master. Although not as good of a read, imho, as MY LAST SIGH, this is still required reading for Bunuel fans, and still retains all of the great artist's power, humor, and insight. In an era of big bucks and ready-made food, it stands out like a whale among minnows.

This is a wonderful and funny collection of surreal writings from one of the greatest filmmakers of all time. Many of the earlier, surreal writings by Bunuel, written when he was with the Surrealists in France, are imaginative and funny. There is also the complete collection of poetry originally titled An Andulsian Dog, which is surprisingly strong. The criticisms by Bunuel, along with the autobiographical material, offer insight to his aesthetic beliefs and his thinking. There are also snatches of the last screenplay on which he was working before he died in addition to the original screenplay for Andulsian Dog and a Hollywood treatment for an unrealized film GOYA. Overall, this is a big treasure for those who love Bunuel and who have been anxiously awaiting to read his hard to find pieces. It is a great companion to Bunuel's MY LAST SIGN.

Best book I ever read!.......2001-12-31
This was Merton's favorite book (of his own writing), and my favorite book as well. He was a scholar and a poet, and his essays reflect that: he does not write down to his audience. Merton was that great rarity: an existential mystic. He had incredible insights; his writing had a profound influence on ME. These essays are meant to be disturbing. Written in the Sixties, they are as meaningful today as then.
Essential to the Christian Contemplative.......2000-06-22
Merton is regarded as one of the few prophets of the 2oth century by the Catholic Church, and Raids makes it clear why. A series of essays and drawings, Raids on the Unspeakable provides valuable insight into the cultural phenomenon known as the 60s. While some of Mertons essays are hard to understnad, on a whole the book is well written and provides interesting philosophies on life. Merton's prophecies also seem to deal wiht many present day problems. Some highlights of the boke are Rain and the Rhinoceros', and Meditations in the Memory of Adolf Eichelman.

Lovecraft on LSD!.......2004-09-17
The Unspeakable written by Dan Clore is definitely not for the squeamish. Good horror literature as this, is indeed rare. Deeply dark without being prurient. Each tale is a fantabulous mind-bending trip of Lovecraftian proportions. All the tales (stand seperate), form a cohesive binding whole that makes the Unspeakable, speak. Each story is a "penny dreadful" written by the exo-outerly enigmatic Lord Weyrdgliffe of the Waughters. Highly recommend this in small doses on those nights you want to be creeped out!

It is reputed that the author suffers from chronic pain. It is not clear whether that pain is the cause or a consequence of his writing style. My guess: the former.

Over the top grotesques, similar to C. A. Smith if he had been un-edited. Makes Stephen King look like a sissy.
