"On an island off the coast of Maine, a man is found dead. There's no identification on the body. Only the dogged work of a pair of local newspapermen and a graduate student in forensics turns up any clues. But that's just the beginning of the mystery. Because the more they learn about the man and the baffling circumstances of his death, the less they understand. Was it an impossible crime? Or something stranger still...? No one but Stephen King could tell this story about the darkness at the heart of the unknown and our compulsion to investigate the unexplained. With echoes of Dashiell Hammett's The Maltese Falcon and the work of Graham Greene, one of the world's great storytellers presents a surprising tale that explores the nature of mystery itself... "

Enjoyable and thoughtful.......2007-08-14
Not being a huge Stephen King fan, I found this story very enjoyable. It proves that you can have an intriguing story without the gore or supernatural or psychological mayhem. I listened to the audio version, which was nice because once you get in the rythym of the accent it is part of the story's charm (it reminded me of my childhood neighbors who were from Boston). The characters are a bit two-dimensional, but the point of the story is not the characters, I don't think. The point of the story is the idea of "story" and what you need to make a story work. And my dissatisfaction at the end only added to the point the book was trying to convey. And I admire how King worked the story out nearly completely within dialogue, which must hve been an interesting and challenging exercise.
A 180 page conversation about a mystery with no solution.......2007-07-26
First of all, I've read 10 books in the Hard Case Crime series and loved all of them except this one. I have also read all of Stephen King's novels up through "Misery". This is by far his worst book, judging by the ones I've read, and the worst entry in this series. If you're reading the Hard Case Crime series you might want to read this one to complete it, but it's a disappointment. Hope I'm not giving too much away, but the entire book is one conversation between three people about a mystery - if there had at least been a solution to the mystery at the end that would have been something. The mystery is uninteresting as it is - even more so without an answer.
The Return of Stephen King...Sort Of.......2007-07-23
This "novel" was the first release for King after his mini-retirement. Since it's part of a "hard case crime" series with a fantastic retro-pulp cover, you wouldn't be wrong to expect hard boiled crime...executed with King's immutable style. After the first two chapters don't go anywhere, however, you realize that this is really just a short story exercise for King that never picks up speed. In fact, King says as much in his afterword: This book is a meditation on unsolved mystery. There's no crime, no sex, and no tension--all of which makes for a maddening pulp fiction book.
Not one of Kings better efforts.......2007-06-18
This book is deservedly getting lambasted left and right. Their is not much to recommend here. You would expect King to have some idea of how to bring along this sort of story. After all he has done it remarkably well with such titles as Shawshank Redemption.
Basically, this is a story that concerns two old men passing down a story that has stuck with them through the years to a young intern at a Main local newspaper. King does a decent job of setting up a space where you can imagine these three bantering over a couple of hours about the past. When King starts to tell the story, you will probably find yourself sucked into what seems will be a great mystery.
The story is that of a dead guy found at a spot on the beach 25 years ago. Good set up right? Well King goes on for another half of a book and doesnt really add much else. I think he was trying to write a 'true' mystery book here. One with no neat wrappings. But as clever as King was trying to be, this one just doesn't work.
I would suggest that King read Paul Auster's Music of Chance to see exactly how this sort of book could actually work.
Waste of Time.......2007-06-15
I'm not a regular reader of Steven King, although I love his novels that have become movies. That is, the movie version. This book was something I grabbed for some mind candy at the supermarket counter thinking it was some old fashioned pulp fiction. Boy was I wrong. i felt like I was reading a newspaper article the whole time. It must be nice to be able to publish anything and have it so widely available, but this book belongs back in S.K.'s throw away pile.

Go to your local visitor's center.......2001-12-01
If you live in Colorado, I would NOT buy this book. It has no unusual or unrecognized destinations. Any of the information in this book can be obtained at your local visitor's center. If you live out of Colorado, or if you just prefer to spend the money on a bound copy of visitor info, this book is fine. Be aware that the educational content is geared to older (pre-teen) levels. Also, this book covers all of Colorado, so these are not daytrip destinations. The authors have the right idea, but I would like to see them issue some regional guides, e.g. Denver/Boulder area, Western Slope, Southwest Colorado, Colorado Springs area, and include some out of the way and more intriguing trips.
Very Cool!.......2000-05-07
This book is a great help in planning family vacations. It is easy to read and is very clear when describing activities/areas to visit/interesting info... It offers information about places that includes wildlife, nature, history, even questions that you and your child can try to answer as you visit these places.

I picked up this book one day to kill some time..........2000-11-17
Now I'm taking the time to find/buy the other books in this series because it was so great! I cant wait to read more! I loved it! It was definately different and a lot more interesting than the average "romance" novel and it was so different that you could swear it was a true story. Do yourself a favor and get the whole series.
Super read! A Great new mini-series!.......2000-04-18

Book Description
A suddenly single father--and nationally known environmental reporter--takes his children on a world tour of some of the world's rare and endangered life forms while reckoning with loss, change, and the challenges of parenting in this frank, funny, moving memoir.
After the death of his brother and the sudden end of his marriage, and after his ex-wife moved to another state leaving him alone with their two young children, Dan Glick embarked on single fatherhood in an unusual way: he took his kids on a journey around the world. The idea was to go see some of the world's rare life forms before they disappeared from the planet, and to do it before the kids themselves would grow up and chart their own paths.
In the summer of 2001 Dan, Zoe, and Kolya took off from Colorado for a six-month journey on which they would see the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, the orangutans of Borneo, Javan Rhinos in Vietnam, the tigers of Nepal, and more. Meeting countless challenges--emotional, logistical and physical--the threesome shared experiences they could not have imagined and would not soon forget. Glick weaves accounts of their encounters with the natural world--and each other--with intimate reflections on his own reckoning with loss, change, and fatherhood, illuminating the commonalities between our relationships with each other, and our relationship with the earth we inhabit. For anyone who dreams of travelling to the world's most exotic places, for anyone already navigating that wild journey called parenting, Monkey Dancing is by turns fascinating, funny, and wise.

Sign me up!.......2006-03-09
A great read for any traveller, but especially a parent who wants to expose their kids to the world but thinks it's a crazy fantasy. Lots of fun - hope I can take my kids on a similar journey soon!
Disappointed.......2005-04-28
I was looking forward to reading an account of a father travelling with his children and sharing their experiences. Instead, I found this book a diatribe about environmental issues and lacking in humour and interest. I couldn't identify with this man.
Fantastic for Book Clubbers.......2004-11-20
I recently chose this book as a selection for a book club that I am a member of. I bought the book on the basis of the editorial reviews found here at amazon, and based on the fact that it was a top book from 2003. Daniel Glick is a writer of such ease, grace, and intimacy. I felt that i was on this journey with Glick and his young children. The book sparked great discussion in my goup, such topics as loss, tolerance, accountability, conservationism, and parenting. Daniel Glick should be very proud of this work of art and of his most important two works of art, his children!
Couldn't finish it.......2004-11-06
I should have loved this book. I love travel writing, I'm a mom and I would love to do a trip like this with my own son someday. I just could not finish it. I'm amazed that it made Amazon's top 50.
I didn't find Glick or his kids very appealing. As I was reading I would think -- this part is supposed to be amusing, but it's not; this part is supposed to be touching, but it's not.
Him and his children on a journey around the world .......2004-08-07
What is a father to do when his brother dies of cancer, his marriage ends, and his life falls apart? Newsweek correspondent Daniel Glick decided his course of action would take him and his children on a journey around the world to see some of the planet's vanishing life forms, and Monkey Dancing is his account of that trip, taken in the summer of 2001. From the Great Barrier Reef in Australia to elephants in Nepal, Glick and his three children embarked on an unforgettable adventure and Monkey Dancing tinges their experiences with insights on loss, fatherhood, and world changes.

Customer Reviews:
Parents Beware!.......2003-01-24
This is not a book you would want your children to read! The short stories are inspired by modern-day, Frankenstein-like concepts (most having nothing to do with the movie or book characters) and there are explicit sexual scenes and references: pleasure robots, AIDS, rape, fisting, etc. Most of the stories are disgusting; I would not recommend them to anyone.
Brillant patch-work.......2000-12-18
A well-crafted compilation of tales; a good deal more discriminating than most monster/horror collections (because less material on Frankenstein's monster?). A great many of these stories are literature - some poignant, sentimental, mostly tragic and some actually scary; just like the myth that was their mother. The Vonnegut peice, "Fortitude" is a short play. While more simple in its statement and language than the other pieces, is fast and sharp on irony. "Monster of the Midway" is a short funny piece in a nontraditional arrangement, amusing even if you don't like football. "Pity the Monsters" has its pitiful and frightening moments. And Brian Aldiss' "Summertime was Nearly Over" almost made me cry. The creature that is the protoganist of Aldiss' story is achingly intelligent and well-spoken. But I think my favorite was "Creature on the Couch" despite its sudden and ambigous ending. It's funny and charming while being somewhat suspenseful, and maybe a little shocking as you re-read the ending again...
Some good stories but ultimately a collection of experiments.......2000-08-03
While some of the stories in this book are pretty good, most of them are just writing exercises by writers slumming in a collection. The Vonnegut story is dull and the cyberpunk story isn't anything new. Most of the other stories are either sequels to the book (which has the monster even more miserable than he was at the end of the novel) or to the movie (which are more fun just because the movies were more fun)
It's a short book and not terribly bad, but it's not altogether satisfying either.
