Raising Cane
Abigail Timberlake Washburn understands the antiques game is a gamble -- so she doesn't know what to expect when she wins the bidding for the contents of an old locker that has been sealed up for years. It's a delightful surprise when she discovers inside a collection of exquisite old walking sticks -- and a not-so-delightful one when she pulls out a decrepit gym bag containing . . . a human skull!
The last thing the diminutive South Carolina antiques dealer needs is to be suspected of foul play. So she grabs her chatty assistant (and future sister-in-law), C.J., and heads out to search for a killer they can stick it to. But this cane case will be no walk in the park -- with its arcane clues hinting at poaching, counterfeiting, smuggling . . . and homicide, of course. And when a fresh corpse turns up, things are about to get really sticky for Abby and her staff of one.

Unpleasant surprise for Abigail.......2006-08-23
Abigail Timberlake is the owner of an antique store in Charleston, South Carolina. She makes a bid on the unknown contents of a storage area and is unpleasantly surprised to find a skull in a gym bag, along with a collection of old canes. Two bumbling policemen question Abby about the skull and she is soon a suspect in their eyes. When she has a conversation with a woman who is murdered shortly after, she becomes even more of a suspect.
I have read all of the previous books in this series, and I was disappointed in this one. The story could have been told in a much shorter book, and the plot seems to meander aimlessly as Abby puts herself in one crazy situation after another. Her connection with the skull and with the murdered woman is so thin that it doesn't seem even close to logical that the police would suspect her. The jokes about her friend C.J. (such as her aunt being a goat) and her crinoline-wearing, imprisoned-in-the-50's mother are wearing a bit thin. It may be time to retire this series before it becomes a shadow of its former self.
Abby Annoys Colonel Beauregard Humphry.......2006-08-17
Let us set the record straight right from the very beginning. If you are looking for a deep and puzzling mystery with serious sleuthing and hard-edged characters you will not like this book or this series. If on the other hand you like to take little flights of fancy and just read something that is fun, entertaining and just plain laugh out loud funny, this is an excellent series for you and this latest installment is simply wonderful.
Abigail Washburn, who uses the last name Timberlake for business purposes, has a highly successful antique store in the more snooty area of Charleston, South Carolina. Her problem is that her business keeps bringing her into contact with an unusually high number of dead bodies or parts thereof. Usually she finds that she is a suspect and jumps into action to clear herself because she says that she is too beautiful to go to prison. Don't get the wrong idea about her however for she says this in a very facetious manner. In this installment of the series she buys a locker that she is happy to discover contains some old walking canes. She is not so happy however when she discovers a skull that just might be human came with her purchase.
Once again she finds herself in trouble and heads out to do a little snooping and the fun really gets started. As usual the characters that she investigates are a highly unusual bunch and also as usual someone she has just talked to ends up dead. What is unusual about this entry into this series is that Abby actually solves the mystery in a way that would make Colombo proud. Usually she just bumbles around until the killer gets tired of her questions and tries to kill her. This time however she figures it all out for herself and finally confronts the killer from a point of strength. She still almost gets killed but this time she knows why.
As usual, Abby's quirky family and friends add much of the color and humor to the plot. Her friend CJ is about to marry Abby's brother Toy and Mama Wiggins is having a petite fit because CJ intends to wear a dress that is much too close to white. CJ also intends to have one of her cousin's from Shelby be a bridesmaid even though they are going to have to do a DNA test to see if she is a human or a goat. And finally, Bob of the famous Rob-Bobs drops a bombshell about his younger days.
This is probably not the best book to start this series with because so much of what is going on needs background information that can only be found in previous books, but I guarantee that you will have a ball bringing yourself up to date. This series and this book in particular barely qualify as mysteries, cozy or otherwise, but they are such great fun that I really don't worry that much about the plot. I just sit back and have a great time reading about the exploits of Abby Washburn who is quite possibly the funniest detective of all time. I absolutely can't wait for her next adventure to hit the stands.
the cane mutiny.......2006-06-27
abigail continues to rush in where more sensibly people would not go in the cain mutiny in her current mysterious hit and miss by luck investigations, she discovers a few bits and pices about her own family
The Cane Mutiny.......2006-06-25
I enjoy reading this series and learning about the antiques involved. The characters are funny esp. CJ and Abigail's mom.
It is a fast read not very in-depth murder, but is entertaining. Abigail won a locked trunk auction and when she opened it, there was a skull in it. Bumbling law enforcement wants to pin a murder on her, so Abigail has to solve it herself.
Humorous Mystery.......2006-05-17
Abigail Timberlake, owner of the "Den of Antiquity" an antique store, makes one of the winning bids on a locker at a locked trunk sale. She's pleased to discover that one of things in the locker is a collection of antique canes. She's less pleased to find a gym bag containing what looks like a human skull. She calls the police, who, after asking too many stupid questions, arrest Abby for obstruction of justice. Her mother quickly bails her out and Abby sets out to clear her name by questioning all the people who also bid on the locker, thinking one of them might be a murderer.
This is a very funny book with lots of jokes and very little mystery. The plot meanders all over the place, from who is getting into the store and moving the antique canes, to who owned the skull that Abby found to who murdered the housekeeper/lover of one of the suspects. Halfway through I wondered why I was even reading this book until I came to the following sentence (describing an author in the book) "(her) novels are merely witty, relying far too heavily on humor and wordplay". Tamar Myers must have had her tongue planted firmly in cheek when she wrote that as she describes her own books perfectly. Her mysteries are filled with eccentric characters such as Abby, who knows shockingly little about antiques considering she owns an antique store; her mother, Mozilla, who dresses like a mother in a 50's sitcom; and her friend, C.J. who tells the most outrageous stories about her relatives. The mysteries are thin, but the books are at time laugh out loud funny and yes, involve lots of word play.
Tamar Myers' mysteries are for those who love humorous books and don't mind reading a really light mystery.
Book Description
How the Miami Hurricanes rose from a laughingstock to a college football legend-and reshaped American sports.
When fans think of college football, they think of Miami-the cool school with street cred that all the kids dream of playing for. A powerhouse unlike any other, they are a dynasty fueled not by individuals but by the aura of "The Miami Vice"-a swaggering, trash-talking, us-against-the-world mentality. But less than 25 years ago, the program faced extinction. Now, five national championships-and five different coaches-later, Miami is the preeminent football factory, boasting such high-profile NFL alumni as Michael Irvin, Ray Lewis, Warren Sapp, Jim Kelly, Vinny Testaverde, Clinton Portis, and Jeremy Shockey.
Nothing is typical about the 'Canes. Not the brutal, "voluntary" 6 a.m. workouts in July. Or the merciless drilling of teammates who show fear. Not the constant pressure from their Godfathers, the ex-Canes who want them to uphold the legacy-and will make them pay if they don't. And certainly not the reputation that has made the Hurricanes synonymous with excellence-even among superstar athletes. Now, an award-winning sportswriter gives us a rare, behind-the-scenes look at the Miami program-after more than ten years of special access as a former UM student and beat writer. This is the amazing story of how Miami has won more national championships over the last two decades than Notre Dame, Oklahoma, and Florida State combined-and gone from near-death to dynasty.

A must for serious 'Canes fans.......2007-08-05
If you are NOT a fan of the Miami Hurricanes, you should really be a sports junkie to invest the time in reading this. But if you are, this book will be endlessly entertaining, even though it's a little (maybe a lot) rough around the edges.
Story of The U.......2006-12-14
This is an "OK" book. If you want to know about Miami football, this book is a good start. It traces the history of the program, from its inception to the the first championship season in 1983, all the way to the end of the 2004 season. Along the way the reader encounters many of the players and personalities that made UM what it is. And from that perspective, it's a decent book.
However, even though I am a UM fan, I found it to be somewhat biased. Referring to the team as a "dynasty" is a bit much, especially in light of the team's recent struggles. UM had a nice run, but all teams have their rough stretches too. One could make the argument that USC or a few others are just as much of a "dynasty" as UM.
Still, it was easy reading, and it was mostly fun to read. But I warn anyone who is not a UM fan - you should not read this book, because you will get turned off by its favortism for the U. But for those who don't mind, it is informative, and helps you remember some of those championship seasons!
Three stars.
Biased, not at all objective, and fairly ignorant summary.......2006-02-24
Hmmm... let me guess... Bruce Feldman went to the University of Miami? He did? Shocking!
The only reason I continued reading this book is because I am a big college football fan. The book goes something like this...
Feldman spends a few hundred pages defending the thuggery, classlessness, and corruption that is the University of Miami football program. It is a boring and pathetic defense, in which he blames administrators (wow, people actually want to emphasize academic integrity and sportsmanship?), the media (EVERYONE is just out to get the "U"!) and America (they hate us because we're black). Feldman, fess up: Miami is a pure embarrassment not only to college football, but to anybody with a degree from "Suntan U". Move on, folks. Some things just don't deserve a defense-- Miami football is one of them.
(Also, try to avoid listening to this guy whine when he's on ESPN. Brutal.)
An entertaining look at Miami's football program.......2005-11-10
This book describes the history (mostly recent) of the football powerhouse of the University of Miami Hurricanes. The author, Feldman, describes the beginnings of the Cane attitude, the former players and how they still feel part of the team, the problems that the team and the program have gone through, and the misperceptions. There won't be any incredible insights in the book, but it is a fun, entertaining, easy read. Good for a long plane ride.
Rene Ortiz' Review.......2005-09-21
I ordered the book an I had it in my hands within 3 business days. Excellent service. I would definitely recommend this seller 100%. The book is great; it tells great stories about players, coaches and the program itself. It is amazing how the U became a powerhouse.

On of the best Superman stories of all time.......2005-09-01
Every historian should listen to this serial. It gives a glipse into the mindset of the America before our time and how it related to the Second World War just after War's End. It is also a very exciting Superman story. I wish all of the Superman on Radio stories were made available. Anyone reading this who can help this happen?
Very Overated.......2002-10-19
I have purchased the CD version of this Radio Series and I have to say that the only worthwile feature of these episodes in the sound quality. Having said that the serial is [very weak].
I was so disgusted by it that I have thrown the lot in the dustbin where they belong. a total waste of money if ever.
There is no music or intro music to set the mood and pace of the serial and the sound effects are hopeless. As a real fan of both radio and film serials I have to say the Superman Vs. Atom Man is the most useless series I have come accross,... The only reason I have given this CD set 1 star is because I have no choice if I am to get my views on this site.
Superman's finest radio series.......2000-05-06
I have several collections or Superman on radio, and this is the cream of the crop. Superman gets to test his might against a true super-villain. The Atom Man has Kryptonite flowing through his veins, which gives him mighty atomic power. Bodies begin to pile up, including both Superman's allies and enemies. Superman is powerless simply standing next to him.
I have to admit that some of the Superman radio shows can be a little cheesy, and are best heard through a filter of nostalgia. This one is really exciting. I was actually in suspense as to how, or even if, Superman would survive.
One of the Best Superman Stories of all time.......2000-01-12
"Superman vs. Atom Man" is a powerful and exciting radio drama. It's full of suspense and adventure. In this classic story, Superman has to face off against the kryptonite powered Atom Man who has the power to destroy stadiums and level forests with his atomic kryptonite. The story is extremely suspenseful as it slowly builds up to its climax, a battle between Superman and the Atom Man with thousands of lives at stake. The end battle has to be one of the most dramatic sequences in radio thanks to the amazing acting and sound effects. This is a must have for any fan of old time radio shows or any Superman fan in general.
Tremendous exciting radio for Superman fans of ALL ages!.......1999-11-03
The serial is regarded as the greatest story line in all of juvenile kids radio. And it lives up to that lofty billing. Superman vs. Atom Man is truly exciting radio, well written and extremely well acted. Bud Collyer as Superman/Clark Kent and Mason Adams as Henry Miller/The Atom Man are superb. Just exciting radio that would be great for the entire family to listen to.

Listen to this with your kid!.......1998-06-30
You can really get the feel. I mean, what was it like to be a kid in 1945 and look forward to a daily adventure serial? I listened to this tape in the car with my eight year old son, and, do you know what? Now we feel we know.
Sure, the story is a bit corny when listened to with a modern ear. But the villains are bad, the plot is convoluted and actually takes some surprising turns. But more importantly, it really gives you a peak at the Man of Steel's roots. For example, did you know that it was this radio series that created Superman's pal, Jimmy Olsen, as well as the menace of Kryptonite? Both appeared in this series before it did in any comic book. Also, the great "Faster than a speeding bullet" intro that many of us remember from the old 1950s TV series with George Reeves also got its start here. In fact, you can see here that the very sound of that old TV series (such as the sound of Superman flying) was obviously taken right from this radio series. As a long time comic book reader, I was amazed to find out how much of our modern Superman legend came from these old radio dramas.
The author obviously made a brilliant selection of material. In the course of this ongoing serial, we get to hear Superman team up with Batman, the telling of Superman's origin by Clark Kent to Perry and Lois, and the second appearance of Kryptonite.
The sound is clear, and my son and I really enjoyed listening to it over several long (and short) car trips when we were on vacation. If you're interested in the Superman phenomenon, old time radio (all commercials are also included), or just want something to listen too in the car with a child, this collection is a must. Much more kid friendly than that scary Shadow guy!

Man-o-Man of Steel!.......2003-02-25
This is theatre of the mind at its best.I like Bud Collyer, the voice of the Man of Steel, better than ANY movie or TV Superman.I love the way he did Clark Kent as a tenor and Superman as a baritone-especially when Clark turns into his alter ego and Collyer would change mid-sentence-"This looks like a job FOR SEPERMAN!"The stories are action-packed and the serial format keeps you on the edge of your seat!Once you start listening, you won't want to stop!If you only know the man from Metropolis from books, movies nad TV you should get this.
Great for work or relaxation.......2002-04-09
I bought a copy of this great audio collection last weekend! I am a big comic book fan, and enjoy listening to and reading the classics. This is a must have for any comic book history collector! The quality is superior, and the great plots have you listening for hours on end. I enjoy having the tapes run in the background while I do my work in the office. I almost feel like I am reporter at the Daily Planet!
Classic radio at it's finest!.......2000-11-02
I love this CD set. This 5 CD set containing 27 action-packed radio episodes starts off with the explosion of Krypton and works in all of the classic Superman elements. Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen, Clark Kent and the Man of Steel. Did you know Jimmy Olsen appeared in the Radio Series long before his freckled face showed up in the comic?
This box set starts off with Supermans origin. A hero being useless without villians, he quickly faces off against serial style villians like the Yellow Mask and the Wolf. All the sound has been remastered and it comes in a great box set. I love it!
A must listen to........1999-11-30
These stories are great. Superman is powerful but not so powerful that nothing is a challenge. Clark Kent has a backbone. Lois is not annoying. The stories are not far-fetched space aliens, but actual criminals and gangsters. These radio dramas are well written and will not bore. They are all connected into two large stories which helps. They come with a booklet on the history of the radio dramas and entertainment at the time which is very informative.
These are classics........1999-11-04
You couldn't have stories that are more fun to listen to. These are why Superman is the premier Superhero today.

Product Description
THIS CDS CONTAINS A COLLECTION OF RADIO TRANSMITIONS OF THIS PROGRAM IN MP3 FORMAT.
The Adventures of Superman, adapted from the DC Comics character created in 1938 (see Superman), came to radio as a syndicated show on New York City's WOR on February 12, 1940. On Mutual, it was broadcast from August 31, 1942 to June 17, 1949, as a weekly serial. It was aired on a three-times-a-week schedule from January 31, 1949 to June 17, 1949. The series shifted to ABC Saturday mornings on November 5 1949, and then to twice-a-week in June, 1950, continuing on ABC until March 1, 1951. The character created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster arrived on radio not long after the comic book and took on an added dimension with Bud Collyer in the title role. During World War II and the post-war years, the juvenile adventure radio serial, sponsored by Kellogg's Pep, was a huge success, with many listeners following the quest for "truth, justice and the American way" in the daily radio broadcasts, the comic book stories and the newspaper comic strip. Airing in the late afternoon (variously at 5:15pm, 5:30pm and 5:45pm), the radio serial engaged its young after-school audience with its exciting and distinctive opening:
Faster than a speeding bullet!
Able to leap tall buildings with a single bound!
Look ! Up in the sky!
It's a bird!
It's a plane!
It's Superman!
Just as Superman's true identity remained a secret, the identity of radio actor Collyer also remained a secret from 1940 until 1946, when the character of Superman was used in a promotional campaign for racial and religious tolerance and Collyer did a Time magazine interview. Since there were no reruns at that time, the series often used plot devices and plot twists to allow Collyer to have vacation time. Kryptonite was the most famous of this which allowed Superman to be incapacitated and incoherent with pain while the secondary characters took the focus instead. At other times, Batman and Robin appeared in their own stories in Superman's absence. The scripts by B.P. Freeman and Jack Johnstone were directed by Robert and Jessica Maxwell, George Lowther, Allen Ducovny and Mitchell Grayson. Sound effects were created by Jack Keane, Al Binnie, Keene Crockett and John Glennon.

Book Description
On February 12, 1940, The Adventures of Superman hit the airwaves in a new syndicated radio series. An instant hit, the program ran thoughout the 1940s, with Bud Collyer playing Superman. The show introduced many of the characters and concepts that later became fixtures in DC's comic book stories, including Superman's first encounter with the deadly kryptonite and his adventures teaming up with fellow DC characters Batman and Robin.
Released first on CD and audiocassette in special boxed sets by Radio Spirits, in association with the Smithsonian Institution Press, the radio scripts of these shows are now being published for the first time in book form. The first volume of this series contains the classic 1945 "Superman vs. The Atom Man," which pitted the Man of Steel against his deadliest foe, a radioactive Nazi agent within whose veins flowed deadly kryptonite. Volume One also includes 16 sidebars focusing on such topics as Superman's comic book history as it relates to the radio scripts, the actors who performed in the series, the significance of the introduction of kryptonite, and the sociological context of the work given its airing during World War II.

Perfect for Superman collectors or fans of old radio dramas.......2002-01-06
Superman Radio Scripts presents original radio scripts from the 1940s radio series Adventures Of Superman, gathering scripts never before available and pairing them with sixteen pieces of classic cartoon art. It's the scripts themselves which are the highlight here: perfect for Superman collectors or fans of old radio dramas.
Excellent Work of Yesteryear.......2001-11-04
I have been a fan of Superman for many years, but I have always
particularly enjoyed the Golden Age. This book has the radio script from Superman's best radio play to my knowledge entitled "Superman VS Atom Man". Since I also own the radio show on tape, I can read along as I enjoy the story. There are also some wonderful old pictures that accompany the story. All I can say is that I would enjoy seeing more of these radio scripts in print. The book says "volume 1", so I hope that means more volumes may be coming out. If you want a script of this wonderful radio story, you won't be disappointed. And, overall, the price is right!

The Trio of Heros on Radio.......2003-09-08
It was radio that first teamed up Batman,Robin and Superman. Here are the complete, unabridged episodes!I like these tapes because all the action takes place in your imagination, not as some one else thinks it should look like!I also like the way Bud Collyer gives different voices to Superman and Clark Kent.We even here him in the first episode-as Jor-El!The music is campy and the commercials can get annoying, but if you like the keros, classic radio or both this set is a must.If you just want to enjoy these superheros in a different way, that's SUPER too!
HUGE collection of Superman on radio.......2001-10-10
This 20 cassette boxset is the most comprehensive collection available of Superman on radio. 119 episodes in total, there are no duplicate episodes from other Radio Spirits Superman collections. As a nice "extra," this set includes a rare 1939 audition episode that was never aired.
"Superman With Batman & Robin on Radio" contains several Superman milestones, including the serial "Knights of the White Carnation" (dealing with issues of racism, with white supremacists as the villains), for which the producers of Superman were honored with a humanitarian award. Superman's first encounter with Kryptonite is told in "Superman vs.. Kryptonite". Kryptonite was invented for the radio show, when Superman actor Bud Colyer wanted to take a vacation. Along with this is Superman's first encounter with they dynamic duo, Batman and Robin. They were brought in to replace Superman while Colyer was on vacation.
Other serials include "The Man Without a Face," "The Phantom of the Sea," "Mystery of the Lost Planet," "The Monkey Burglar," "Drought in Freeville," and "The Story of Marina Baum."
The only drawback of this collection is that it is not available on CD. Still, an excellent purchase.
Super Fun look at Nostalgic Radio.......1999-12-04
"Superman With Batman and Robin" is good fun radio. I have always been impressed with Bud Colyer's portrayal of Superman from radio, the Fleischer Cartoons, and the 60s TV series. But now we have a 20 cassette collection of 119 radio programs to enjoy. On top of enjoying these old programs, we get a rare treat of listening to the original Superman 1939 audition called "Clark Kent Reporter"! (Never aired). And we get to hear the last season of Superman where Collyer is replaced by Michael Fitzmaurice, who unfortunately simply cannot recreate Collyer's Superman voice. The reason I do not give it 5 stars is because there are some bad recordings in a few episodes, and also, I have to admit that I do get tired of the number of "Kelloggs PEP" commercials heard throughout the programs. But overall it is great family entertainment and I hope that RADIO SPIRITS crank out even more titles as time goes on. It's true SUPER FUN!

The Adventures of Superman, by George Lowther is basically the story of how Superman came to be the legend he is. It's similar to the famous Superman movies starring Christopher Reeve. It starts off in the planet Krypton and eventually the infant Superman's spaceship crashes on Earth and the Kents, who will soon become his parents, discover him. His new life begins as Clark Kent. This book took me through the many things Clark went through. For example, the discovery of his super powers, the death of his father, his new job as a reporter in the Daily Planet located in Metropolis, his problems with a co-worker named Lois, and an exciting mystery of ghost ships and enemy agents.
I had a great time reading this book because the author made me feel a strong personal connection with Clark. For example, when his dad died, I could feel all of Clark's anger, frustration, and sadness. I felt like I was by his side, going through whatever hardships or good times he was going through.
Also, this book always had something exciting and fun going on. This novel is full of action, yet it is also meangingful because it lets the reader know what is going on in Clark's head. I think it is important for all books to let the reader know what is happening in the mind of the characters in addition to their environment.
My favorite part of the book was when Clark discovered his first super power, x-ray vision, when he was 13 years old. At first it was of course awkward and maybe a little scary for him. But when he learned to control it, it became very useful. This part of the book was exciting because this was when Clark found out he was from a different planet. This is when the book picks up speed and starts to get even more exciting!

EXCELLENT book!.......2002-01-24
This is easily one of the best Superman books written. Clark Kent, as well as Superman, are heroic, classic, and timeless. I recommend this book (if you can find it) to anyone who enjoys a story from a time when heroes were HEROES, not super-powered people instead of heroes.
Please don't be fooled by the cover..........2001-12-17
This has got to be one of the best books I have ever read. I took one look at the cover, and laughed... but then I opened and thumbed a few pages... and ended up renting it from my local library. There's something to be said about a book that can have you toting it around all day just so you can read it again at the very next chance you get. But it does. Some may not enjoy the slow pace of the story, but you should wish that the plots in the comics were this good. If you ever, and I mean EVER have the chance to pick this book up, I suggest you do so.
A wonderful book that excites, delights, & opens imagination.......1999-06-02
The Adventures of Superman authorized by George F. Lowther is a highly recommended book for children and adults of all ages. It brings forth a realistic fictional plot. Superman "The Man of Steel", was the first of its kind to be written about in comics, and has amazed the many people who have read his daring rescues and his incredible feats against the most powerful supervillians. This book summerizes him as a child adult and as a reporter, as well as Superman. This book describes his first mystery, his first news article, and his first appearance as Superman.
