Book Description
Skillfully blending searing suspense, characters with grit and heart, and a dynamic plot, bestselling author Julie Garwood has written another electrifying novel of romantic suspense.
Kate MacKenna doesn’t have a bad bone in her body–or an enemy in the world. A woman who barely knew her father and has just lost her mother, Kate is a loving sister, a savvy business owner, and an unpretentious beauty who radiates kindness. So why are bombs igniting everywhere she goes?
The first explosion brings her face-to-face with a handsome Charleston police detective. The second one sends her into the arms of her best friend’s brother–a Boston cop who’s a little too reckless and way too charming for comfort. But Dylan Buchanan won’t let emotion prevent him from doing his job: Someone is trying to kill Kate, and Dylan is the only one standing between her and the monster who wants her dead. For Kate to understand the danger, she must learn all about desire–desire for pleasure, desire for power, and someone’s desire to kill.

Slow Burn.......2007-09-09
This was a great book, it kept me entertained and guessing right to the end.
Enjoyable story, held my interest and attention.......2007-03-19
This story was set in South Carolina, Savannah, and a bit in Boston. It is an action packed mystery with several possible culprits, and the suspense is held until the end. There is also a romance between the main character and her best friend's boyfriend, who also happens to be investigating in the mystery. I enjoyed the sisters, and especially the settings. I am left with a few very minor questions, but those lose ends didn't have anything to do with the main plot, just the side relationships of the characters. The characters in this book were positive and cared about doing what was right.
This is the first story I have read/listened to by Julie Garwood, and it seemed very possible that there were other books before this one that used these characters because they made many references to past experiences with each other. I would read a story by her again definately.
I have listened to a book narrated by Joyce Bean before, and again, I like her style. She differentiates the characters pretty well and uses special affects for phone conversations and things.
Good enough to try more.......2007-03-09
This is the first book I have read of Julie Garwood. I enjoyed the book enough that I plan to try out some of JG's other books. The plot was interesting. One thing I did get tired of was the way the author portrayed Kate's feelings for Dylan. I was happy to see a somewhat suprising ending. I would recommend this book to my friends. Actually one of my friends read it and loved it.
Julie Garwood never fails to tell a compelling story.......2007-02-27
Kate MacKenna has worked extremely hard to make a success of her business that she had started purely by accident when she made candles to give away as gifts. Her friends convinced her that they were marketable and her company grew from there. Just when it seems that everything should be going great, inexplicable events start happening.
Dylan Buchanan is the brother of Kate's best friend, Jordan. He also happens to be a detective in Boston. Dylan was injured in the line of duty and is currently on leave from the department. Dylan's had a crush on Kate for many years. He's never acted on it though, until now.
Unbeknownst to Kate or her sisters, a wealthy relation whom they'd never met changed his will, leaving each a very wealthy woman , but which puts them at great risk from the various money hungry relatives who are desperate to get their hands on the fortune. In Kate's world, everything is going wonderfully, her company is expanding, her sister's are both happy and well adjusted. The only exception is her sister, Kiera's attempts at `sexing Kate up' which includes wearing a Wonderbra. Little did Kate know that uncomfortable contraption would save her life! She'd worn the Wonderbra to an art showing that was being put on by a friend of hers'. When it became too uncomfortable, Kate was forced to go outside to remove it because the bathrooms were out of order. An explosion occurred and Kate was knocked unconscious. Once she is released from the hospital, Kate learns that her mother had put all her assets up as collateral before her death, one of the assets was Kate's company. When Kate had returned to college, she made her mother a partner so that she'd be able to make deposits and sign checks. The balloon payment is due within thirty days or Kate loses the company. Without her company how would she pay for her sisters' college tuition? Kate is soon given yet another reason to panic when she receives a phone call from Jordan. She'd discovered a lump in her breast and surgery was scheduled in a few days. Amidst all her worries about her sisters' tuition, her company, and their home, Kate flies to Boston from Charleston, South Carolina, to be with her friend. She'd never expected to see Dylan while she was in town, or have the one night stand she wouldn't be able to forget.
Julie Garwood has been one of my favorite authors for many years. Her books are smart, sassy, brilliantly humorous, and they always have an awesome plot that will keep you on the edge of your seat. SLOW BURN had me hooked right from the first chapter. You can easily envision the elderly relative's disdain for his self-indulgent relatives as he has someone videotape his explanation of his last will and testament to them all. It's a brilliant scene, and I absolutely loved it. The main characters are all down to earth, just the kind of people you'd want to have as friends. I was fascinated by Kate's ability to come through each crisis relatively unscathed, and was thrilled with Dylan's involvement in her life, especially after she practically ran out on him after a one night stand. Just when I thought I knew who was out to kill Kate and why, I reached the end of the book only to have to go back and reread it just because it stunned me the way it turned out. I have recently been told that Julie Garwood is the "Queen of Suspense" and I have to agree. Wonderfully done Ms. Garwood.

Very enjoyable. Listening to a book allows me to enjoy the story when I'm unable to read it. If you enjoyed the book, the audio version allows you to enter the world the story creates.

4 1/2 stars.......2007-08-14
This is a modern romance.
Kate Mackenna inherits 80 million dollars (yikes) from her uncle and survives several attempts on her life--by dumb luck mostly. LOL
She avoids getting blown up, while leaning down in her car seat to get her dropped phone. LOL Lucky her!
Her bestfriend sends her brother, Dylan (detective from Boston on leave) to help Kate.
This was a nice book to read. Good change from "hysterical romances." Well written, two likeable characters.
Excellent end.......2007-07-15
This is my first JG's book and I'll be looking for more. The book's story is charming. You'll really know the meaning of "good friend", that no-matter what problems overwhelm you you'll help your friend. But the paramount learning in this book is that you can't judge anybody if you don't have all facts. And a fact is that you won't have any inkling of how the book'll end.
I was expecting so much more..........2007-06-06
I've been a big fan of Julie for about sixteen years now. I've read most of her novels multiple times and so it was with great anticipation that I finally sat down to read Slow Burn.
This novel turned out to be a huge disappointment for me. It felt about 50 pages too short. We are told early in the novel that Kate and Dylan knew each other in the past, yet very little is said about how they came to care so much about each other in the present. Or more accurately, why they pretend not to care about each other. I wish that Julie would have taken some time to give us some flashbacks between Kate and Dylan. I think it would have fleshed out the characters a bit more. Overall the whole thing just felt a tad incomplete to me.
Also, the main character, Kate, seems to be a complete idiot and I found myself screaming at her more often than not. *SPOILER ALERT* Kate inherits more than eighty million dollars yet refuses to use any of that money for herself despite having a huge debt that will possibly cost her her business, her house and her sister's education. She doesn't want to use the money because of the person it came from. Self sacrifice is one thing, but this goes way beyond being believable.
I've always loved Julie's strong and self reliant heroines. Most of them are great and memorable characters that I love to revisit from time to time. I don't think Kate will be one of them. She feels more like a caricature of one of those great heroines.
No chemistry for a fire.......2007-05-16
Ok, Garwood tells us over and over how much Kate desires Dylan, and Dylan is clearly concerned for Kate. However, they are repetitive characters who don't grow. Besides, Kate goes from having a one-night stand with Dylan to being rude to him. She thinks he cat's about - though she claims she "understands" he must sleep around because he is an attractive man, it doesn't reflect well on either of their characters. Especially since they are together.
Also, Kate is ridiculously, masochistically self-sacrificing, not telling her sisters that their relatives might want her dead. She seems unable to communicate and connect with anyone, burdening herself with every problem. * SPOILER ALERT * And, she wants to get back at her horrible relatives, but she won't spend any of the money she inherits from their side of the family on her mother's enormous debts. It's one thing to make a statement, another to be financially retarded. Perhaps because she overdoes the self-righteous self sacrificing, she is passive-aggressive to her relatives and to Dylan.
Explosive..........2007-03-28
Honestly, if there were as many explosions around me as there are around Kate, I would curl up in a ball and cry. That being said, Julie Garwood's story is intriguing and you have to love the spunk that Kate shows in the face of repeated attempts on her life. The chemistry between Kate and Dylan is terrific. I was lucky and read this book after the second book had been released in Hardcover. Overall, a great read!

Book Description
This extra-ordinary sixty minute guided meditation by BC author and spiritual teacher, Jackie Haverty, was created to provide the listener with a profound, multi-dimensional experience in which the Higher Self is accessed for mystical insight and "true" healing. Through intent, the heart is opened to the timeless gifts of transformation and unconditional love from the Divine Self. This journey provides true liberation of our body, mind and spirit. Although primarily intended as a meditation tape, the soothing words by Jackie and the inspirational music by Paul Armitage make this CD a wonderful relaxation tool which can release tension and stress, inducing a healthful sleep.
Already in its THIRD PRINTING in less than one year, this success has inspired Jackie and Paul to release a second volume, entitled "Journey to the 5th Dimension" in February, 2004 (ISBN 1895814308).
Your Journey to the Crystal Palace begins with a deep, progressive relaxation during which you are encased in the loving presence of the white light. Continue your journey inward to your heart centre where you access the doorway to the magnificent Crystal Palace. Once inside the Crystal Palace, you will have the opportunity to absorb rays of healing light from all the colors of the rainbow. There are three large windows available to you. There is a window available for viewing past experiences with understanding, compassion and forgiveness; a window for viewing all possible future paths and choices; and a window for viewing solutions to problems and answers to questions.

Journey to the Christal Palace.......2007-09-03
This is the most beautiful guided meditation I have ever experienced. The message that the author conveys is uncoditional love that you will find within yourself when you get in touch with your devine self - "the kingdom of god that is within you." - I would recommend this medication to everyone who believes in a higher self.
Good for some, Not for others.......2007-07-09
I bought this guided meditaton to assist me in reaching a meditative state in which I could conduct my dicursive meditation as practiced by some Druids. The "Journey" as it turns out centers on a passage taken from the Bible in the Book of Matthew, Chapters 5 and 13. "The Kingdom of Heaven, which lies within you" is the passage.
This would make for excellent meditation for someone who is Christian or follows Christian Gnosticism. I myself am Druidic. Therefore being of Pagan belief and not necessarily believing in "Heaven" per se, I found the theme distracting and ineffective at inducing my meditative state.
Therefore, for me, it was no effective, but it would be ideal for some of different faiths. My advice, if you are pagan, go with some plain New Age music or record your own narrated guided meditation.
Excellent Guided Meditation.......2007-06-02
This is a fantastic guided meditation. I highly recommend to anyone thinking of purchasing this meditation. I have thoroughly enjoyed it.
Not bad once you get past the beginning.......2007-05-13
Jackie has the annoying habit of smacking her lips after speaking...once you get past this, it is a very relaxing cd, but have seen nothing divine or otherwise.....
Wonderful meditation cd........2006-02-09
I was blown away by the authors cd. Jounrney to The Crystal Palace. Jackie Haverty's voice is so soothing I began to relax almost immediatly. The back round music is so beautiful it to had an effect on me. I could feel my body, it felt like it was buzzing because of the energy. I actually met a beautiful Unicorn on my meditation. I would highly reccomend this to anyone who is looking for a high rate meditation cd that really and truly works...
Book Description
Built for the Great Exhibition of 1851, the Crystal Palace originally graced London’s Hyde Park with Joseph Paxton’s remarkable geometric design and groundbreaking use of glass elements, prefiguring the modern movement in architecture. After the exhibition a group of bankers, railway directors, and men of influence moved the structure to a new site in south London, rebuilt it to an even grander scale, and set about its promotion as a "palace for the multitude." Here were exhibitions, concerts, and spectaculars to fill a splendid day out for Londoners of all classes and interests. Filled with plaster casts of great art treasures, life-sized models of dinosaurs, waterworks, and gardens, the Crystal Palace became a center of both education and entertainment from the Victorian era through its destruction by fire in1936.
Copublished with C. Hurst & Co., London
Wisconsin edition for sale only in North and South America, U.S. territories and dependencies, and the Philippines.

Book Description
The grand exhibitions of the Victorian and Edwardian eras are the lens through which Peter Hoffenberg examines the economic, cultural, and social forces that helped define Britain and the British Empire. He focuses on major exhibitions in England, Australia, and India between the Great Exhibition of 1851 and the Festival of Empire sixty years later, taking special interest in the interactive nature of the exhibition experience, the long-term consequences for the participants and host societies, and the ways in which such popular gatherings revealed dissent as well as celebration.
Hoffenberg shows how exhibitions shaped culture and society within and across borders in the transnational working of the British Empire. The exhibitions were central to establishing and developing a participatory imperial world, and each polity in that world provided distinctive information, visitors, and exhibits. Among the displays were commercial goods, working machines, and ethnographic scenes. Exhibits were intended to promote external commonwealth and internal nationalism. The imperial overlay did not erase significant differences but explained and used them in economic and cultural terms.
The exhibitions in cities such as London, Sydney, and Calcutta were living and active public inventories of the Empire and its national political communities. The process of building and consuming such inventories persists today in the cultural bureaucracies, museums, and festivals of modern nation-states, the appeal to tradition and social order, and the actions of transnational bodies.
Book Description
A central part of a visit to any botanical garden is the conservatory, an enormous glass structure that houses a wide variety of exotic flora. America has an abundance of exceptional examples; many have been designated National Historic Landmarks. Crystal Palaces is the first book on garden conservatories in the United States from the Victorian-era structure in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco to the recently completed Quad City Conservatory in Rock Island, Illinois. Twenty-five conservatories are presented in detail through lavish color photos and evocative descriptions. Just a few of the spectacular conservatories included are Steinhardt Conservatory in Brooklyn, Fairchild Tropical Garden Conservatory in Coral Gables, Missouri Botanical Garden Conservatories and Climatron in Saint Louis, and Volunteer Park Conservatory in Seattle.

Beautiful reference book.......2001-02-06
Important background information on these lovely historic glass houses is matched with lovely photos. It would make an excellent book for planning travel to any of the cities where these conservatories are located. Well known properties are listed as well as ones less famous. This book is a "must" if you are a lover of gardens and plants.
excellent.......2001-02-04
This book contains beautiful photographs and is very well written. Ms.Cunningham has done a wonderful job.
A Beautifully Prepared View of Glass Houses.......2000-11-26
Gardeners, Horticulturists , or anyone else will enjoy the beauty of this book. What struck me was the beautiful preparation and the reproduction of the Photos. The color and architectural features leap off the pages.
The history of the development of Conservatories adds an extra dimension - and of course nearly every large city has one, open for visiting now !
A great read, and a terrific gift for anyone.

Good, but pales in comparison to Sorcerer's Son..........2001-05-26
I have to say: I absolutely loved the Sorcerer's Son (the book that this is the sequel to), and I thought that this book started out good as a sequel and as a normal book. However, although the book had many twists and surprises I thought that the overall experience was duller than the first book, and there are some errors that do not fit with the first book.
It seems that although Eisenstein has in some areas expanded the sequel from its origin, in other areas she has shrunk it back, at the expense of the book; for instance (no spoilers except if you haven't read Sorcerer's Son yet, and even then it's a minor one), we are now told that Cray's mother is the only sorceress/sorceror who is not evil and doesn't recruit demons in the whole world, wiping out a lot of possibilities for other characters and contradicting in a way with the first book.
I also thought that too big a chunk of the book was spent inside the crystal palace with somewhat repetitive talk going on between Cray and Aliza. I have nothing wrong with character development, but I would have preffered that Eisenstein had drawn out a story in which the character development could happen "on the move" as it did in the first book.
Another splotch for me was the badly chosen "evil" in the book. (possible spoiler) Having wiped out other possibilities by saying that Cray's mother was the only one who practiced magic besides recruiting demons, we get barely a sense of real danger from the evil sorcerer in this book since we see that he's not even as strong as the one in Sorcerer's Son. It seemed like Eisenstein kept on trying to add on special evil powers to him all through her book to cover what she realised was a rather weak archfiend.
However, I can't deny that I still love Eisenstein's writing more than most other authors'.
So I give this book a "4". In comparison with Sorcerer's Son, however, I would give it a "2.8"
SPECTACULAR!.......2000-11-15
This book has great memorable characters that you can identify with as well as think of them as your own friends.A fantastic sequel to the book,Sorceror's Son.Kudos to Phllis Einstein for her effort.A third book would very welcome.
A fitting sequel to the Sorceror's Son........1999-11-26
This book was, I think, one of the best fantasy books that I have ever read. In the previous book, Cray finds that he has inhereted a powerful legacy not only from his sorceress mother but also from his similarly empowered father. The Crystal Palace shows within its pages how Cray's knowledge - not his enthusiasm - of sorcery increases. To fill this void within himself Cray must look beyond his life and his world. Eisenstein is a mistress of her art and this book serves to exemplify her skill.
LOVED IT!!.......1999-02-24
Here is a brief synopsis. This is the 2nd book after The Sorcerer's Son. It follows Cray Ormoru's latest quest on saving the woman he loves from her Grandfather.
Romantic literary fantasy.......1998-07-06
I haven't yet fallen out of love for this book. The story is filled with longing desires, an emotionally intrinsic brand of sorcery, and villainous jealousy. That there were ends to the depths of her story have left me checking the ailes of bookstores for many years. (Where did I put my copy?)

Book Description
Whitney Walton approaches the nineteenth-century French industrial development from a new perspective--that of consumption. She analyzes the French performance at the Crystal Palace Exhibition of 1851 to illustrate how bourgeois consumers influenced France's distinctive pattern of industrial development. She also demonstrates the importance of consumption and gender in class formation and reveals how women influenced industry in their role as consumers.
Walton examines important consumer goods industries that have been rarely studied by historians, such as the manufacture of wallpaper, furniture, and bronze statues. Using archival sources on household possessions of the Parisian bourgeoisie as well as published works, she shows how consumers' taste for fashionable, artistic, well-made furnishings and apparel promoted a specialization unique to nineteenth-century France.
