Book Description
Peggy and Pam were two desperately disorganized sisters. After analyzing their lives, they set up a rotating card system that scheduled their chores on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis. with a combination of the sympathy of a fellow former slob, and the firm resolution of a for-your-own-good mother, they show readers how they too can get organized.
Customer Reviews:
Read this book first!.......2007-09-30
I have been a fan of Pam and Peggy for over 25 years. Their system really works. I decided to get back on board the organization train as a new empty nester and decided to buy the second book, even thought it has been out for over 10 years. I wish I had read this book first. The card system is streamlined and easier to set up and follow. Have fun reading this funny practical guide to getting back on track.
From Pigpen 2 Paradise to Phil Donahue.......2007-08-14
These ladies have such a wonderful way to look at life. I've been following them since they were on the Phil Donahue Show in their early years. They changed my life over the years to take control of a very closet "pigpen" person. I've watched them when they've added family members, their grand babies, to when they have lost family members, their Mother & Father, God rest their souls. These ladies always feel like they are real people.....not just a book person trying to earn some extra money. I've enjoyed watching them over the years and think of them as part of my "own" family.
Their few point has been so helpful in getting the junk out of my world. From getting a handle of my messy house to getting a handle of a messy relationship.
If you are someone that is trying to get from out of the bottom of the pile.. this book is for you.
Peggy & Pam have been a lifesaver through out my life.
Saving lifes with Three by fives.
I hope they don't mind that I post this for them.
"Using humor, we are dedicated to helping people improve the quality of their homes. We know that the strength of the family has a profound effect upon the schools, the community, the workplace, the country and the world."
God Bless you Peggy & Pam.

an ok book.......2007-07-05
Some good ideas, shows those who are overwhelmed how to tackle things one step at a time. I am not using the method-I found it too constraining and made my own system. It did give some advice that I was able to chage to suit my own system but over all I don't think there is much here. If you can get a used copy for a couple bucks go for it! Personally I think if someone has so much junk in their house they can not move they need to see a professional to find out why they are holding onto junk-there is something deeper going on and they need help.
Erma Bombeck Meets Julie Morgenstern.......2007-06-23
Why I read this book: I got this book largely because of the title, because I work out of my home (and I fancy myself to be an executive!). However, in this book "home executive" refers to housewife... running a household. As a bachelor I could certainly use the help with that, so I read it anyway.
The strength of this book is it's home-spun style. Pam and Peggy are sisters, each of them tell their tales of woe... what it was like being disorganized slobs, and then tell how wonderful their lives are now that they have "the system." The way they unfold their story is very personal and funny. Kind of like Erma Bombeck. If you've had to run a household, particularly with kids involved, you will relate to them. They add to the personal nature of the book by including several pages of photos of them, them as kids, their kids, spouses, etc.
The Book's Weakness: The book is 165 pages, and only one chapter of 25 pages is devoted to the actual "system." Although it may work great for them, for most of us disorganized types we read it and say, "What?" I need a lot more hand-holding, step-by-step instructions. It seemed that this was a book of their experience and then they did a drive-by when it came to helping us put into practice what they did.
The guts of the book: Their system revolves around the use of 3x5 cards. I do like that part, because I have grown so weary of "lists," and have recently changed to index cards exclusively. Lists always need changed or rewritten. Cards can be "recycled" for future reminders, or thrown away if the task is done. And I'm just a more tangible, visible, feel-it type of person. Also, with lists, all I need to do is look at it once and I'm already feeling overwhelmed. I need to "see" one task at a time. In any case, the last thing I wanted to do after reading this book was to try and figure out and implement their particualar 3x5 system. Way too complicated with way too little instruction in how to really get it up and running, even though I've read several books on organizing, and have experimented with many "systems." I did pick up a few tips here and there that were helpful in my continuing quest for creating my own personal efficient and effective task, time, and information management system.
The flavor of the book: As well as home-spun stories with glaringly real anecdotes of their daily life, the book is interspersed with poems, cartoons, and their philosophy on life and happiness.
Evangelical Alert: The book is interspersed with occasional god-talk and spirituality, but loosely defined. On one page they quote Oral Roberts and Paramahansa Yogananda right after each other. In one chapter they discuss the effect that "getting their act together" had on their marriage. Peggy's went through some changes, but came out better. Pam ended up divorcing her "critical" husband.
Quote from book: A disorganized person's Christmas prayer (p. 96) "O Lord, bless my desperate search for the twenty-five gifts I need to find in two hours. Let ther be cash somewhere I havent' looked, and let my bank card work one more time without an authorization call. Let there be just one more Polly Puberty Doll somewhere and let there be batteries included. Guide me to just the right store, and lead me to the correct sizes and colors. Let each selection be exactly what my loved ones had hoped and dreamed for. Keep me calm as I grope through crowds, scrounge through sale items, and dash up and down escalators. O Lord, forgive me for leaving this to the last minute again. If you'll get me through this one more time, I promise I'll get organized."
Entertaining, outdated, but somewhat helpful.......2007-06-14
I just read this book and enjoyed it. It was entertaining, but somewhat outdated. The basis of their program is good. In fact, the detailed listing of household duties is helpful in putting together a personal program - using your computer. They did, later, insert some information about using your computer, but it is still outdated. I followed the recommendation someone else gave and purchased the book "Sink Reflections".

Book Description
Fourth in the Kurt Wallander series.
In the award-winning
Sidetracked, Kurt Wallander is called to a nearby rapeseed field where a teenage girl has been loitering all day long. He arrives just in time to watch her douse herself in gasoline and set herself aflame. The next day he is called to a beach where Sweden’s former Minister of Justice has been axed to death and scalped. The murder has the obvious markings of a demented serial killer, and Wallander is frantic to find him before he strikes again. But his investigation is beset with a handful of obstacles—a department distracted by the threat of impending cutbacks and the frivolity of World Cup soccer, a tenuous long-distance relationship with a murdered policeman’s widow, and the unshakably haunting preoccupation with the young girl who set herself on fire. Fascinating and astute,
Sidetracked is a compelling mystery enhanced by keen social awareness.

Good But Not His Best Novel: 4 or 5 Stars, Spoiled By Too Many Murders.......2007-02-11
I thank fellow reviewer Leonard Fleisig for bringing this author to my attention. The writing is simply superb. I am very interested in reading more books by the Mankell. So far, I have bought and read six novels in the Wallander series.
I thought that the novel was excellent up to a point. But then when the bloody and gruesome murders go on and on - and right to the end - it becomes a bit too much. For that reason I think that Faceless Killers or One Step Behind are his best novels. But the present novel is not far behind. This problem with the murders is that the story is set over a very short time frame, and Wallander does not have enough time to solve the case. I thought that Mankell was doing a great job with the novel and it might be his best, until the murders become tiresome. The novel reminded me a bit of the Peter Robinson Inspector Banks series and of course here the multiple murders set the structure of the novel.
The book opens with a map of southern Sweden showing the location of the town of Ystad. The latter is the primary setting, although the crimes are spread around the southern part of Sweden. The police station is located in Ystad which is near the most southerly part of Sweden, south and east of Malmo and on the Baltic. Malmo itself is on the west coast of Sweden, just 10 km across the narrow straights from Copenhagen. Part of the tale takes place in Malmo and part in Helsingborg, north of Malmo.
I will not give away the plot and the essential plot elements are outlined by the publisher: there is a series of murders and an unrelated suicide. The policeman, Kurt Wallender, takes a personal interest in the suicide, and is somewhat "sidetracked."
This is a great and a fast read that I was able to read with a great deal of enjoyment in less than a day or two - even though it is 500 pages. I read it while staying at a hotel in southern Sweden, not too far from the crime scene, and that the details and descriptions of the places, people, and other details are made to seem authentic.
This is a book that I highly recommend, but because of the multiple murders it merits between 4 and 5 stars. The writing is smooth and flawless.
Ah, take one consideration with another.......2007-02-08
A policeman's lot is not a happy one! W.S. Gilbert.
Even in Sweden if Henning Mankell's police procedurals provide any clue. Detective Inspector Wallander's lot is not a happy one in "Sidetracked". By the time you get through the first two chapters Wallander has seen an unidentified teenage girl douse herself with gasoline and watched helplessly as she burned to death. He is then placed in charge of the investigation of the murder of a former Minister of Justice who was killed with an axe and then scalped. To make matters worse, while Wallander is busy trying to solve these apparently unrelated events, Sweden has pretty much come to a standstill as the whole nation (with the possibly sole exception of Wallander) as it watches Sweden's run to third place in the 1994 World Cup. As Sweden's World Cup fever increases the scalper strikes again and again and Wallander feels as if he is the only person not glued to a TV set.
Mankell's Kurt Wallander series is often compared to the Martin Beck detective mysteries authored by the husband and wife team of Per Wahloo and Maj Sjowall. Wallander, like Beck, is a police detective in Sweden. Unlike Beck, whose beat was Stockholm, Wallander works in the small southern-Swedish city of Ystad. The Wallander series takes place in the 1990s while the Beck series took place in the 1960s and 1970s. Although I tend to prefer the Beck series, the Wallander books are entertaining page-turners. Mankell stays well within the `police procedural' formula and has not tried to reinvent the genre. However, he has done a good job of developing the character of Mankell and his supporting cast of characters. Wallander is no Sherlock Holmes and gets results more by perspiration than inspiration. He is also a fully drawn character. We see him dealing with the break-up of a marriage, an estranged daughter, and a father who is developing senile dementia. The supporting characters, particularly his fellow detectives, are also well drawn.
I thought Mankell did a good job in Sidetracked. As the plot is advanced we see Wallander struggling to find clues and then struggling to get a grasp of their meaning. The reader has an advantage in that Mankell reveals more to the reader than to Wallander. The interest for the reader (or at least for me) is to see Wallander gradually put the pieces together. Basically, this is a well-written police procedural. It does not break new ground or transcend its genre but it is a very entertaining, if sometimes depressing, book to read.
Potential readers should know that this is the fifth in a series of Kurt Wallander mysteries. (There is likely to be a Comment under this review with a list of Wallander books in chronological order.) Although each stands on its own as a self-contained story there is a lot of subtext that may be lost on readers who read the books out of order. Mankell's characters and their relationships with each other evolve over time. I suggest that anyone interested in this series start of with the first book, Faceless Killers, before picking up Sidetracked. Some books in the series are more entertaining than others but I don't regret having read the first five books. Recommended. L. Fleisig
A so-so book.......2006-10-10
I found this book being given away and figured I'd read it based upon the glowing reader reviews on Amazon.com and the CWA Gold Dagger award for this book. I'm sorry that I read it. It's a decent book, but not great. It was not worth my time. The characters are flat and uninteresting, the dialogue is flat, and it wasn't much of a page-turner. Basically, it's an unexciting book that leaves you on a down -- kind of like the Swedish personality in general -- which is a theme of the book itself. While I'm not a mystery-book junkie, I'm open to the genre. If this book constitutes an award winner, then I'm hesitant to read much else in this genre that is celebrated by the "experts."
A pleasant diversion .......2006-09-29
It's my wife who is the reader of mysteries in the family. And she highly recommended Henning Mankell's Kurt Wallander mysteries to me, and Side-Tracked in particular. This was a pleasant diversion and Mr. Mankell is an excellent writer and his detective Kurt Wallander is an interesting lead character. The book opens with a great start, a wandering middle and strong yet predictable ending. After all the reader learns half way though the book who done it and waits while Wallander and his Swedish detectives figure it out. One of the charms of the book is its Swedish local and yet that part of this particular book is not fully realized. This could just as well have been Kansas. So my read is a recommendation as the book is entertaining, well written, and if you're in the mood for a mystery I think you will enjoy your time with Mr. Wallander. But don't skip those other great Non-fiction books out there unless your looking for pure diversion. Yet, I will look forward to sampling another Wallander Mystery sometime soon.
A killer with the heart of Geronimo . . ........2006-07-08
This is the best of the four Inspector Kurt Wallender police procedurals I've read so far. No secret excursions across the Baltic, no geopolitical-racial thrillers. Just a solidly professional, sometimes uncertain, often brilliant, but always persistent detective plowing through disparate evidence to catch a serial killer. The title is important, too -- even a good, widely experienced cop can be led astray. "The first thing that happens isn't necessarily the beginning of the case," or words to that effect. Wallender is a fascinating character, and very human, too. He worries about his relationships with his father and his daughter, feels slightly guilty pleasure when his superiors compliment him, gets scared when he thinks he or those close to him are physically threatened. He even has vaguely erotic dreams about a female pastor he meets in the course of the investigation. But always, after spending an hour with his own bugbears, he shifts gears and becomes a cop again, and a good one. He's a loner who can organize and lead a crack investigative team, an anti-bureaucrat who knows how to orchestrate a productive meeting, a logical rationalist who always listens to his hunches. And even though you'll know pretty early who the killer is in this case, you'll hold your breath every time Wallender unknowingly comes near him. A terrific story.

As the Kitchen goes-- so goes the Home!.......2005-07-19
Whether you follow Pam and Peggy-- fly with flylady-- or what ever you do-- the kitchen needs a plan of it's own!!
This book helped me organize my kitchen layout- use storage space effciently- keep the room clean and shiney-- create delicious, nutritious dinners (without having to run to the store first!) AND-- didn't leave me a slave to the stove and kitchen sink!
If you have read other Sidetracked Home Executive Books- you won't find repetition, this was written to follow their first book, and does so beautifully. It is filled with the wit and charm we've come to expect from Peggy and Pam and plenty of down home wisdom and good ideas.
Highly recommended for the side tracked- overwhelmed-- wonderful creative woman who yearns for simplicity and success!
It couldn't be better!.......2002-02-09
This book is to kitchen organizers what Websters is to writers. It is a classic. Of course I use this book's strategies in my own kitchen, but as well, I employ its kitchen layout plans at my job: I design kitchen renovations. This book is absolutely outstanding.

Challenging ordinary people to live extraordinary lives.......2006-12-14
In "Sidetracked in the Wilderness" Michael Well challenges many of the shallow ways of thinking in our current societal morass. He advocates taking responsibility for our actions and then living in the joy and challenge of what comes. We don't know the future and can't control it, but we can trust God, if we will. Michael repeatedly addresses situations where people are hurting and shows them a way up.
In a chapter that focuses on theological issues he focuses on the KEY issue; "How will this help me live more like Jesus?" If it won't, then he does not worry about it. His comment is that the gospel is to be lived, not always understood. If we approach the Bible to understand it, then we miss much of the sacredness of the relationship with God.
I highly recommend this book for anyone who is struggling with defeat.

Helps me get motivated to have a lovely home.......1999-06-24
I found this once in a library in Texas - a nice change from most organizational books. Goes month by month, and gives a different focus idea for each month. Good ideas for getting motivated, but not too much nuts and bolts - get those from other books. This is for motivation and direction.

"Living" the Christian Life.......2002-05-20
I've been a Christian for over 25 years and this text is the most effective piece I've ever read on the subject of living the Christian Life. In our goal oriented society, the pressure to perform is more than God requires. Michael Wells explains in very human terms our responsiblity is to abide in him and God's responsiblity is to grow the fruit. God has made revolutionary changes in my faith and behavior as a result of me understanding the contents in this book written by Michael Wells. This book is a little known gem. You would be wise to take it to heart.
This is the most amazing and freeing book I've ever read.......1998-11-19
How often is the Christian life a series of highs and lows? How often are we continually working to experience feelings of God's acceptance? This book showed me that our acceptance by God is not related to how we are feeling It has nothing to do with who we are and Everything to do with who he is!! I Love this book, It has helped me understand so much. It is great to give copies away as gifts.
