Prayers for Rain is Dennis Lehane's fifth installment in his intricately plotted, beautifully written, and much underacknowledged Boston mystery series. Lehane's books reflect our morally complex times, when the borders between right and wrong are somewhat blurry.
Private investigator Patrick Kenzie is in the middle of a personal crisis--he's lost his passion for the profession, and is tired of people with their "predictable vices, their predictable needs and wants and dormant desires." Angie Gennaro, his occasional sweetheart, lifelong friend, and fellow investigator has quit the business. She's still deeply resentful about Patrick's handling of the Amanda McCready case, the focus of Gone, Baby, Gone. Without Angie, private investigating has lost its fizz.
The suicide of a former client, Karen Nichols, gives Kenzie his investigative itch back. Six months earlier, Kenzie tracked down a stalker who had been harassing Nichols, and put an end to his heinous hobby. But Nichols needed more help than this PI could ever have imagined. "She'd been drowning, and I'd been busy." The successful, middle-class young woman had been sinking into a sea of drugs, alcohol, and prostitution, hitting the bottom when she jumped from the Boston Custom House. Her death consumes Kenzie--he is convinced that someone pulled her into the vortex, although her nearest and dearest simply call her weak.
Kenzie teams up with his explosive, loving, gun-toting friend Bubba Rogowski, and, after a boozy reunion, Angie Gennaro joins them. This fearless threesome must surely be the most original team in contemporary crime fiction. Good at the core--but seriously screwed up by various demons from their pasts--tact and decorum is hardly their style. They work their way across Boston, doing whatever it takes to question Nichols's family and acquaintances. By unveiling the real Nichols, tragic family secrets, betrayals, and conspiracies are also unmasked.
If you haven't experienced Dennis Lehane's world before, be prepared for an invigorating new reading experience. --Naomi Gesinger
Book Description
The master of the new noir, Dennis Lehane delivers a shattering tale of evil, depravity, and justice that captures the dark realism of Boston's gritty blue-collar streets.
Private Investigator Patrick Kenzie wants to know why a former client, a perky woman in love with life, could, within six months, jump naked from a Boston landmark—the final fall in a spiral of self-destruction. What he finds is a sadistic stalker who targeted the young woman and methodically drove her to her death. A monster the law can't touch. But Kenzie can. He and his former partner, Angela Gennaro, will fight a mind-twisting battle against this psychopath even as he turns his tricks on them.

A fitting end..........2007-10-01
I love Prayers for Rain not only because it's a great book and you can really see how Lehane is shaping to become more than just a thriller writer but a true literary gem but because Patrick and Angie are really here in fine form. There are a lot of laugh out loud moments, a lot of tense ones too but this book has so much heart, it's amazing. Usually when a writer gets to their fifth book, they start to teeter out, take the high road. But not Lehane. Prayers is great not only for its story and its characters but also its heart.
I also hate Prayers for Rain. However, its not the book's fault. It's only because it's the last in the series for right now. And We're left wanting much, much more.
What You Expect From Lehane.......2007-08-19
In "Prayers For Rain", the fifth (and to this date last) installment in the Patrick/Angela series, Lehane delivers what fans expect from this gritty series.
With Angela and Patrick estranged after the shattering conclusion in "Gone Baby Gone", Patrick takes on a case to find out why an ex-client, a seemingly honest and pure young woman, has committed suicide. To Patrick, who has seen the absolute ugliest sides of human nature detailed in the previous novels, the suicide is troubling because this woman seemed to embody what is missing from his life: order, refinement and innocence. For the world to be devoid of even one persons goodness does not sit right with Patrick, so he decides to investigate her death under his own initiative even when her own family questions why he must dredge up the pain from a death clearly ruled a suicide.
"Prayers For Rain" contains all the elements that makes this series such a huge hit with the fans, but it begins to feel a little bit formulaic. It is difficult to write five novels with the same principle characters and keep it fresh, but Lehane almost pulls it off. The plot is interesting, provides a lot of tension, has all the trademark surprises and new characters. However (and I hate to admit it), it felt I had read many of the situations in his previous books from the series. Obviously the settings, characters and action were different, but on some level there was a "seen that, done that" feeling though out the book.
I don't want to suggest that "Prayers For Rain" is not a good book (I did give it four stars) because it is very engaging and well written. Unfortunately the novelties of the characters start thinning in this book slightly. Read it for the exciting well written thriller that is, and enjoy the ride because I think Lehane needed to work very hard to make this book live up to what we expect from this series. It did
A thrilling game of wits and violence.......2007-07-26
"The first time I met Karen Nichols, she struck me as the kind of woman who ironed her socks." Dennis Lehane's sharp, humorous, pointed way with words lets us know, even if his Boston private detective, Patrick Kenzie, is at first bemused and beguiled, that there is something pressurized under all that gentility.
He solves her stalker problem with ruthless aplomb and forgets about her, too busy to return a call some weeks later. Then Karen is dead, a suicide, having jumped naked from the Custom House. Wondering what upheaval could transform a woman's life so drastically, Kenzie learns enough about her peculiar Weston family, her boyfriend's odd accident and her downward spiral into homelessness and prostitution to enlist the aid of his ex-partner and ex-lover Angela Gennaro and his dangerously loyal friend Bubba.
Together they track down a sociopath whose favorite MO involves destruction of the psyche - tormenting his victims into killing themselves - only to find he's already got the trio comfortably in his cold sights.
The resulting game of wits and violence is nightmarishly thrilling, endlessly suspenseful, snapping at its own tail. Lehane's writing is gritty, witty and human, uncomfortably eye-to-eye with a Boston underside that lurks in the shadows of trendy coffee shops, hallowed landmarks and shady parks.
Deft plotting, edgy dialogue and vivid, unsentimental prose place Lehane ("Gone, Baby, Gone," "Sacred," "Darkness, Take My Hand") among the very best.
Lehane on a hot streak.......2007-05-26
There's a pattern to Lehane's books. Small story. HUGE, epic story. Small story. FRIGGIN' HUGE, epic story. And so on.
He starts off with A DRINK BEFORE THE WAR, a nice, small, enjoyable set piece. Then comes DARKNESS, TAKE MY HAND, a 500-page epic. SACRED, his smallest story yet, comes and goes and isn't that memorable. GONE, BABY, GONE explodes onto the scene as his biggest story to date, also garnering the most rave reviews. A true masterpiece.
With this kind of pattern, I was afraid his next title would be something like SACRED, or at best, small like DRINK, and I didn't want to wave goodbye to Patrick and Angie on that kind of note. So I slid my copy of PRAYERS FOR RAIN off my bookshelf and braced for the inevitable Lehane accordion.
And to my surprise, Lehane broke the mold.
PRAYERS FOR RAIN isn't on the same epic scale as DARKNESS or GONE by any means. But what Lehane did manage to do was carry over the fresh prose, the stark imagery, the cutting dialogue, and the compelling mystery of GONE with the small set structure of SACRED, fusing the best of both worlds in the process.
The end result is a fascinating mystery centering around a smaller number of characters but written by one of the best stylists in the genre. Lehane hooked me and kept me reading straight through the end, and unlike SACRED where the villain wasn't that believable or threatening, the bad guy in PRAYERS is truly menacing. Every character in this book is a treat to watch, and every scene is gripping. Just like GONE, but on a smaller scale.
If you liked A DRINK BEFORE THE WAR; DARKNESS, TAKE MY HAND; or GONE, BABY, GONE, check out this book. It shows that Lehane can do it all.
Series Just Keeps Getting Better.......2007-05-15
Just by happenstance I bought and read A Drink Before the War the first in this series and am I glad I did. If anything this is even better than the first. This book actually lives up to the usual hype used in cover blubs. The dialogue really does sparkle and I was happy to read that the two main characters, Kenzie and Gennaro got back together again. This is something since ahhh, they aren't real people. Their go-to sidekick Bubba remains just right, a guy that verges on a superhero and is always there for them. One minor complaint. The evil genius they battle is former Special Forces and, of course, was involved in a war crime in Panama. The author makes it appear that US Army usually just equals massacre by golly. Lehane is just so good I'll give him a bye just this once.

Book Description
"Every day I search in my memory for a Scripture that will help me get through the day. I feel as though I'm at the bottom of a well, screaming 'Help!' to the top."
Following the death of her father, the adoption of a child with emotional and behavioral challenges, and the start of her own physical deterioration, depression had a paralyzing grip on Nancie Carmichael. The wife and business partner of a busy publisher, mother of five children, and a leader in her church, Nancie had gone from being a healthy, confident woman to becoming physically and emotionally ill. But in the midst of this emptiness, she heard the gentle voice of the Father whisper, Just let go. By learning to hear His voice -- and through stress management, counseling, and healthier living -- Nancie emerged from the desperation with invaluable wisdom that she shares here.
Sometimes the things that make our lives full are what threaten to crush us. In Praying for Rain, readers will learn to take an honest look at personal losses, incorporate the principles of balance into their lives, and hear His voice in the wilderness.

These two separate volumes grew out of Susan Lenzkes's own flood of adversity. As her husband, Herb, battled cancer, Susan came to recognize the goodness found not only in refreshing spring showers but also in the raging torrents that threaten to wash away the very bedrock of our lives. These two books are now combined in a larger print edition that is gentle on the eyes and even gentler on the heart.
Customer Reviews:
Comfort, not Sermons.......2000-10-03
When we are hurting we don't always want to hear that we should "cheer up and trust God." Sometimes we just plain want to cry! Susan helps us cry through our pain to a loving God who is tenderly listening. Then she soothes our pain helping to give us strength to make it another day through scripture, encouragement, poems, and true life stories from the heart.
Susan is very familiar with pain...cancer stole first her Mom, then her Dad, and finally seven months later it claimed her husband Herb of 32 years. Shortly after that she lost her Mother-in-law to strokes. In her own words, "When you lose so much that's precious, you find the rain that is falling in your life is more from your eyes than from the skies." This is the book I want to curl up with when pain finds its way to me (and it will) and this is the book I want to share with my dear friends when they need gentle comforting, not a sermon. Unfortunately, there will come a time in everyone's life when they are going to need this book ... get it now so your comfort is just an arm's reach away.

Explains the theoretical basis of purification--the cause and effect principle of karma--which will allow us to achieve happiness.
Customer Reviews:
More than providing a theoretical basis for purification.........2006-04-23
More than providing a theoretical basis for purification, this book offers an exhaustive foundation for the practice to be done in order to acheive purification. This is the first time a teacher has kindly assimilated and analysed the theoretical and practical elements necessary for purification to take place. All that remains for the sincere student to do is to follow Geshe Jampa Gyatso's directions as provided so humbly in this precious volume.
In Buddhism, this is known as a preliminary practice which, when practiced with mental openness, opens doors to much insight and enrichment and other practice. Geshe Jampa Gyatso's commentary and teaching here, is an essential practiioners reference guide and will be much appreciated by those convinced that the verification of theory through personal practice, is the only way to go.
This book is also available in Italian, originating from Pomaia, Tuscany, where the author, Geshe Jampa Gyatso, is Abbot of the Je Tzong Khapa monastery and Master professor of the Masters programme in Buddhist studies.

Toucans with many-colored bills, tapirs with long snouts, and tiny leaf-cutter ants are all part of God's magnificent kingdom on earth. Yet humans are not always mindful of these wondrous miracles. In this vivid rendition of the Lord's Prayer, Bijou Le Tord examines the relationship between nature and humanity. In poignant yet simple words and exquisite watercolor paintings, she celebrates God's kingdom, His forgiveness, and the harmony of the natural world.

Customer Reviews:
Amen to the Lord's Prayer.......2000-08-06
It is rare to find children's books about God that aren't overly dramatic or dogmatic in their style; therefore, imagine my surprise when I finally discovered a children's book about God that actually had flare, originality, and a deep spiritual vein. Bijou Le Tord's story, The River and the Rain, is an enchanting retelling of the Lord's prayer. The universality of the story makes this Christian story a welcoming prayer for all, just as God would intend. Unlike other Christian authors, Le Tord does not liken God and prayer to trite depictions of right and wrong in the traditional sense of the word. Instead, she uses the simple elegance of nature, the destruction of nature, and the forgiving harmony of nature to reword a passionate prayer to the Lord. Le Tord's story is one that will be around for ages to come because in our more "liberal minded world", constrained views about religion will not be tolerated; thus it is an immense relief to see somebody trying to teach young people the beatuy of accepting all of God's creations, whether in nature or in daily life.
Book Description
Inside the Rain Barrel is the true story of a young man's extraordinary courage and commitment. He risks his life to save his family's prayer book from being destroyed during the Holocaust. The book represents the continuity and legacy of a Polish Jewish family. An 11-year old girl learns from her grandfather about family Jewish traditions that have continued on for a very long time, first in Europe and now in the United States.
With a warm and bright approach, the book weaves historic information - from the comfort of life in the shtetl to the danger of World War II - around a conversation between Grandpa Bob and Natalie, his granddaughter. Natalie learns that the tattered prayer book he shows her once belonged to her great-great-great-grandmother, Blumah Gelah. The book was hidden in a rain barrel to protect it from the Nazis. Natalie realizes that the book is a treasure to guard and to cherish.
Inside the Rain Barrel is a celebration of life, family and tradition. The story gives young readers much information and asks them questions about how they would act in certain situations. The story also makes suggestions to encourage and help readers to start a search about their own family members from the past, and to find precious objects that may be passed along from generation to generation.
Much of the Inside the Rain Barrel story plays out in very difficult times and places. The authors, both experienced educators, have taken great care to write sensitively in a manner that will inform but not frighten young readers. Inside the Rain Barrel is fully illustrated with color and black and white photographs. Some photos are more than 100 years old. A glossary has been provided to help readers understand the Hebrew and Yiddish words which appear in the text.

INSIDE THE RAIN BARREL.......2006-10-04
Subtitled A grandfather tells his granddaughter the true story of how a Jewish prayer book- and a young man- survived the Holocaust, this slim paperback was co-authored by a third grade religious school teacher and her father-in-law, who is the narrator's grandfather. From him, 11-year-old Natalie learns about a family treasure, a small prayer book that belonged to her great-great-great grandmother, Blumeh Gelah, in Poland in 1890. Written in Hebrew and Yiddish, her husband gave it to her for their 25th wedding anniversary, so she could help other women follow the services.
The hero, cousin Norman, Blumeh Gelah's grandson, is a Holocaust survivor and the author of three Holocaust novels. He hid his grandmother's prayer book in a rain barrel. It miraculously survived the Holocaust, and he was able to recover it after the war. He has spent his life educating people in the United States about the Holocaust.
The well-written, child-friendly text is accompanied by old family photos, as well as photographs taken by the senior Ringels on trips to parts of Poland where their family once lived and worshipped. Each page number cleverly appears on a small rain barrel. On the back cover is an enlarged photograph of Blumeh Gelah's prayer book. Included are a family tree of Norman and Natalie's family, suggestions to help readers learn about the history of their own family, and a glossary of terms. This can help introduce children to the Holocaust in a non-threatening way, as well as encourage them to learn about their heritage and the importance of saving things from the past. Book Description
With young King Kelson on the throne of Gwynedd, the priesthood of the Eleven Kingdoms felt its control deeply threatened. For Kelson was half Deryni -- part of that race of humans gifted with extrasensory powers...a race that had ruled two centuries earlier, but was dethroned and driven underground.
Now, the final battle for ultimate power was about to break into open conflict, led by the Church which equated the supernatural powers of the Deryni with witchcraft and heresy!
Customer Reviews:
Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03
The Church vs State fuelled war that began in the previous Deryni novel continues here, with the king out at the head of an army, trying to put down an anti-Deryni uprising.
While he does that, his advisors are looking to come to some sort of compromise with the church, diplomatically and religiously so that they can concentrate on stopping the violence.
Does this have to be the end?.......2002-12-28
I have followed the tales of the Deryni for years, and am hopeful that they won't end here, especially with such a weak ending. This is the third and last book of this series, but there are still so many unanswered questions. I am not the least bit dissapointed in what was developed in this installment, and truly loved the book despite my views on how it was ended. I would like to see much more however, and hope that Mrs. Kurtz plans to share more of the story with us in the very near future.
A rather interesting Ending to the Trilogy.......2001-04-20
With this novel, the initial trilogy of the Deryni comes to a close, and in ways that are ultimately unexpected.
The previous volume left quite a mess for King Kelson to clean up, with a civil war to the south, an invading army to the north, a treasonous Earl, an adamantly opposed Archbishop, all lining up for various reasons against Kelson. His internal opponents are so blinded by their own dogmatic resistance to be able to comprehend that they are making their own situation worse by their opposition. They are convinced of the evil of the Deryni, and will oppose a Deryni Duke, even if it means that an evil Deryni warlord will invade and conquer.
King Wencit of Torenth already has the upper hand by his trechary, having slaughtered the armies in the north, the Cassini and Kheldish armies and is ready for pitched battle against a divided Gwynned. But even then, he has plans to skip the battle, a new plot and counterplot, a master schemer he is, pitting himself against both Gwynned and the Camberian Council.
There are a few interesting twists and a rather unsatisfying ending, but it does work out for the best, with no small amount of pain on the part of the victors. War is hell, and it is difficult to be king.
Good Ending, but Characters Still Underdeveloped.......2000-12-21
The ending was a great surprise, and not the usual happy ending that we get thrown (I won't give it away). As a whole, the book was alright- much better than the other two. However, compared to most of the epic fantasies out there, this was weak. The characters were not nearly developed enough, and the dialogue was not a strong point. I'd say the series is worth your time, though.
Wonderful read.......1999-12-23
I thought this novel found a way to wrap everything up nicely from the preceedeing novels, yet still leave the readers wanting more. Mrs. Kurtz delved into her characters lives masterfully again, and it payed off completely. I loved the way everything came together, and the heroes were able to overcome. I also liked the way she accurately showed the "villains" points of view, so they seemed less "evil", then just simply prejudiced and wrong.
