Likened to a "young Muhammad Ali," Alex Cross, the Porsche-driving profiler, doctor, detective, and father of two has seen his fair share of vicious killers. From a bloodthirsty butcher who came after his family (Cat and Mouse) to a devilish duo working cross-country (Kiss the Girls), Cross has managed to outmaneuver all of his enemies. Until he meets the Weasel.
A series of killings in the forgotten, crime-infested ghettos of southeast D.C. has sent Cross and his 6'9" 250-pound partner, John Sampson, in search of the "Jane Doe" killer. However, their racist, tyrannical boss George Pitman orders them to stay out of the southeast and investigate the high-profile murder of a wealthy white man. Cross already has suspicions that the murders are linked, but when Sampson's ex turns up in an abandoned southeast warehouse kicked to death, the two detectives carry on with their original investigation. Meanwhile, Cross's longtime love, Christine (Cat and Mouse), has taken prominence in his life, and it looks as if the two will finally get hitched--with one glitch: Cross puts everything he loves in jeopardy as he obsessively goes after the Weasel.
Akin to a slick Hollywood action flick, Pop Goes the Weasel doesn't have time for meaningful character development or thoughtful moral analysis. And it doesn't need to. Its winning formula is based on short scenes (chapters average about 3 pages), addictive plot progression, and mean dialogue: "Sampson sighed and said, 'I think her tongue is stapled inside the other girl. I'm pretty sure that's it, Alex. The Weasel stapled them together.' I looked at the two girls and shook my head. 'I don't think so. A staple, even a surgical one, would come apart on the tongue's surface.... Crazy glue would work." --Rebekah Warren

Things are looking great for Alex Cross. He is in love with a very special woman, and even a series of ghastly murders he's investigating can't diminish his happiness. Cross's pursuit of the killer quickly produces a suspect-a British diplomat named Geoffrey Shaffer. However, proving that Shaffer is the murderer is a difficult challenge. The diplomat engages in a brilliant series of surprising countermoves, in court and out, and Cross and his fiancee become the targets of a deadly cabal of killers masterminded by Shaffer.Pop Goes the Weasel is James Patterson at the peak of his power. It's his most dynamic and powerful psychological thriller to date. Here is a villain no reader will forget, a love story of great tenderness, and a plot of relentless suspense and heart-pounding pace.
Customer Reviews:
Another flawed plot.......2007-08-13
Shafer, The Weasel, is another of James Patterson's sadistic, super-intelligent killers who is way, way bigger than life. If you can accept such villains, this isn't all that bad, although it does drag a little in the middle and doesn't come to a very satisfying finale. Super villains are a staple of a certain type of fiction: There are Fu Manchu, Lex Luthor in Superman, Ming the Merciless in Flash Gordon, etc. But those are campy fun or comin book nasties, and we can accept them for that. Mr. Patterson crosses the line from comic book and would have us to accept the realism of The Weasel and his ilk. It doesn't work.
The totally un-necessary flaws are also what drag this down. At one point, Cross arrests The Weasel, after he has murdered a police officer. The Weasel has the victim's blood on his trousers. At the trial, the defense attorney implies that it was Cross's blood. A simple DNA test would have shown that the blood on Cross was his own, and that the blood on The Weasel was not Cross's but rather the victim's.
The second and third flaws: at the trial of The Weasel, the defense case seems to have been presented before the prosecution's. Most readers of this book will know that couldn't be. Moreover, Cross was called first by the defense attorney, with no mention that Cross was a hostile witness, although he is a policeman and was the arresting officer. Apparently the prosecution never called him at all--although they surely would have. But then the prosecution did not present their case first, which muddles everything.
Writers have some latitude in re-arranging facts for dramatic purposes, but not to this extent. Readers today are too savvy as a result of Court-TV and the many programs about forensics, DNA, etc.
This is pretty much standard fare for a Patterson/Cross novel. We are told a great deal more about Cross's love life than is significant or than I cared to know. His love life is not to be envied since his significant others keep getting in big trouble. We are also over-exposed to his so very cute kids and Nana.
Perhaps if the author spent a little more time on writing the books, some of the problems could be avoided--but who am I to advise him? His formula serves its purpose: as many books as he puts out each year, they become best sellers and make him rich. Literature his books are not: cash cows they are. Even Shakespeare can't spend his grand reputation.
Pop Goes the weasel.......2007-07-30
Another great Patterson Book. The weasel is a fantastic villian. If you read this one you will want to read more of the cross series.
Exciting.......2007-07-03
This is another Alex Cross mystery. Always excitng to read never dull. Speeds right along. A must read
Alex Cross Returns.......2007-06-17
Being a huge fan of the 2 Alex Cross movies, I thought that I would pickup and read a few of the Cross books by James Patterson. Turns out that this book was 4th or 5th in the series of 8 or 9 books concerning Alex Cross. So I went ahead and read through this book and enjoyed it very much. Cross is fairly level-headed and professional in this book. The antagonist is a british-trained agent that is a common psycho-path and takes on the entire police force and FBI.
Since finishing this book, I started reading Along Came A Spider, where Cross is much more unbalanced and volatile. Its going to be interesting to see how the character progresses throughout the course of reading the entire series.
I am definately a new James Patterson BOOK fan...
Thriller that is too thrilling..........2007-06-04
If you're looking for a book to distract you while you're exercising this book is fine. Otherwise it can be very annoying. Much of it is unrealistic and simplistic. A lot of it didn't make sense. The bad guy does all sorts of horrendous deeds over a period of years and never screws up. He also escapes over and over.

Book Description
My name is Jenna Solitaire and everything I thought I knew about myself, my family, and my future is wrong. My life is not my own. It never has been. I just didn't know it-until now...After the death of her grandfather, nineteen-year-old Jenna Solitaire finds an ancient wooden board hidden away in the attic of his house. Scorched by fire and covered in mysterious symbols, the board fascinates her-and scares her-at the same time. As does Simon Monk, the handsome stranger who has come into her life, claiming to know about the board. Even more frightening is the voice whispering in Jenna's head, calling her "Keeper." Does Jenna have power over the winds, as Simon claims? Is she truly the Daughter of Destiny?
Customer Reviews:
When the Wind Blows; for Fans of Charmed.......2007-04-11
Jenna Solitaire is the author and star of this novel. With the recent death of her grandfather, Jenna has really taken on her name. But at her grandfather's funeral things begin to change drastically for Jenna. There is a stalker at the funeral. Then her local priest introduces her to a former priest named Simon. Simon has made a study of Jenna's family line. There has always been one woman in each generation. That woman becomes the Keeper. Jenna is now the Keeper although she has never learned anything about it. Then she finds a spirit board in the attic and jokingly tries to contact her dead family. Unknowingly she awakens the board which is known as the Board of the Winds. Winds begin to blow.
Things really begin to get out of control quickly. While Jenna may be the Keeper, there are other forces out to get and control the Board. Simon wants to help Jenna. Jenna is the final branch in her family tree and known as the Daughter of Destiny. It will fall to her to find all of the Boards like the one she already has. Soon Jenna has to make some choices about her life as she, Simon, her friends, and her entire town become endangered by the awakened power of the Board and the evil people out to control it. Can Jenna gain control of the Board without it controlling her? Can she save those she cares about? Finally, will she be able to survive?
This is the first in the Daughter of Destiny series and, so far, the best of the three I have read. So far all of the books have glaring flaws throughout. In this one Jenna acquires the journal of the Keepers. For thousands of years the Keepers have added their stories to the journal. Never mind that they somehow all fit in one small volume or that books like this did not exist when the first Keeper wrote in it. While it is possible the book is magic so that it can hold all the information there is no hint that it has changed forms through the millennia. It would seem the author is a bigger fan of Charmed (everything in one simple book) than of Buffy (libraries full of information). I had better hopes for this but having read further into the series I have to say it has a similar lack of sense as Charmed. I would not recommend this unless you really like Charmed.
Completely Amazing.......2007-03-13
I have read thousands of books so far in my life and spent several years recently as a bookseller... and still there are some books that just grip me and I can't let go of them. This series was like that for me.
This series is slated towards teens and I am definitely not in that age group, and I still love this series! I had to buy it for myself after reading the first one in advanced reader form (booksellers get these). I waited for the rest of the series and it was well worth the wait!
There are few books I read that have such a blend of humor, action, struggle, magic, wonder, and destiny. You can read this as lightly or seriously as you choose.
Jenna has taken me on a journey I wouldn't have had otherwise, and I wouldn't change that for anything!
I was really surprised .. .. .. .........2007-03-08
.. .. at how good this series turned out to be. There are 4 books so far: Keeper of the Winds, Keeper of the Waters, Keeper of the Flames and Keeper of the Earth. The author's use of magic isn't over the top and she doesn't rely on it to carry the story. The anthropologist and historian in me really was fascinated with the detail in each book. I didn't stop reading until I'd had all four books read. I would definitely recommend this book series to any teenager or young adult.
Awesome series.......2006-12-17
I absolutly love this series and I've read a lot of books. I recommend this book to anyone and everyone. It's the young adult version of Radiers of the Lost Ark, with a female hero! Something that's not very popular in these HarryPotter-esque days. I love this book and I'm sure you will too.
This may be going somewhere.......2006-11-07
The Daughter of Destiny series starts out well, if not wonderful. While I'm not chomping at the bit to get to the next book, I am curious as to where the author will take things. The characters are fairly 2-dimensional, but they are likeable and have room to grow (hopefully) in the books to follow. The storyline is interesting, though far from novel. I gave four stars instead of three because the first book in a series is often lacking even if the series itself is wonderful- hopefully Daughter of Destiny fits this mold.

Customer Reviews:
Well, it's to MY liking!.......2001-08-15
I can only say wow! There wasn't anything in this book I didn't like. The hero had some personal issues and was trying to work through them. I can't wait to continue with the story. Whine on, Conar McGregor. As a man, I understood your agony!
Not to my liking.......2001-08-04
The first 2 to 3 chapters were okay. Even the plot of the story was okay. The main character male became too much of a whinner, unrealistic in his views and most of the book between chapters 4 and the end was about a spoiled child having tantrums. The humor that was in the first couple chapters got lost among the tantrums. There seemed to be an underlying thought of magic, but it never got revealed or not enough was put into the story. The strength that was shown in the beginning of the woman and the man also became lost in the whinning. Had the author not devoted so much time to drawing out the character's misery, she may have had room to explore their strengths.
This is a really sexy novel.......1998-03-15
A friend recommended this novel to me and from the very first paragraph I was hooked. Not many stories open up with action right off the getgo, but this one did and it was unrelenting the entire time....not a drag in the entire book. The lovers are believable, likeable and like another of these reviews states: they don't insult your intelligence with the girl getting into trouble and having to get extracted by the hero every time you turned around! I liked this book; I loved the characters and can't wait to read more about them; and I laughed, cried, and snarled in all the places the author surely intended for me to laugh, cry and snarl! Hurry up with the next one in the series. Conar and Liza are the best hero and heroine to come along in a long time.
When I finished the book, I wanted the story to continue........1998-02-18
Characters that I can relate to, compelling story and plot, and intriguing development of relationships between the characters, made this book a a dynamite reading experience for me. I eagerly await the continuance to this great tale! Not just names associated with actions, these characters possesed personality and depth that endeared them to the reader. I found myself caring what happened to Conar, just I did for Bilbo Baggins. This is Ms. Compos first published work, and she could not have gotten off to a better start......now lets have that sequel! :-)
And love conquers all..........1998-02-14
The Keeper of the Wind is a romantic love story with a life of its own. I found with great enjoyment that it has all the ingredients a good book should have: romance, intrigue, humor and mystery. Very rich in description. It makes you feel you are there with the characters. Lovable characters and witty. I had a great time reading it. Fans here in South Florida sure are waiying for the next book.

Book Description
Arapaho lawyer Vicky Holden and Father John O'Malley discover that both the supposed suicide of a young Arapaho on the Wind River Reservation and a hit-and-run accident in Denver may in fact be covered-up murders. Now they must uncover what it is about the reservation that people are willing to kill for...
Praise for Margaret Coel's bestselling series:
"Shouldn't be missed by anyone interested in either new trends in mystery writing or contemporary Indian culture. She's a master at both." (Tony Hillerman)
"Readers will be engrossed in the expertly crafted suspense." (Publishers Weekly)
"Margaret Coel joins the top echelon of writers who weave Native American culture into cleverly designed mysteries." (The Midwest Book Review)
"Seamless storytelling by someone who's obviously been there." (J.A. Jance)
"A superior series." (Booklist [starred review])

This series and Margaret Coel are one of my favorites! I enjoy the descriptions of the southwest and the relationship between the main characters.
Vicky and Father John on the trail of diamonds.......2007-06-05
I really like this series, and Father John and Vicky are two of my favourite sleuths. The descriptions of the scenery in Wyoming around the Windy River Reservation are breathtaking. I realize that Windy River Reservation is fictional, but Wyoming isn't, and it's a place I'd like to visit sometime. The mystery starts with the supposed suicide of a young Indian man. He apparently jumped off a cliff while he was seeking a dream quest. Father John knows it's not suicide, since no Indian would kill himself in a sacred place, but he has a hard time convincing the authorities. In the meantime Vicky is pursuing her own investigation in Denver when a man she is supposed to meet is run down deliberately on his way to a meeting with her. It turns out that the two murders are linked and Father John and Vicky pursue their investigations separately while keeping in touch by phone. This is a fast-moving story, that has a wonderful nail-biting ending (or two endings). And the bits of Arapaho culture are still there, salted throughout the book.
Be Careful Where You Meditate........2005-05-06
Some mysterious deaths, starting with young Duncan Grover from Denver (who'd journeyed to Bear Lake Valley on a vision quest) upset the status quo among the inhabitants of the Wind River Indian Reservation, located thirty miles north of Denver. A medicine man (shaman), Gus, tries to persuade the natives that evil spirits sent by the Thunder order had murdered (or at least caused) the death. He convinced the police that it was just a chance happening, a suicide.
However, there had been a witness to the tragic death who gave details in a confessional to the Irish priest, which is considered 'confidentail' information, not to be repeated even to the police. Thus, Father O'Malley finds himself in a dilemma.
Lexcon has found methane gas in different spots throughout the Reservation, and the "Boss' thought that Grover must have discovered what was going on. Why else would he camp out so long on that cliff, observing things from on high? He'd been deep in meditation with no food and was lightheated and unobservant as he walked toward the edge of the cliff. The police had determined it had been a case of suicide and not accidental, and no longer investigated. Actually, he had been hit in the side of the head with an iron rod by these underlings and thrown over the cliff below the crude carving (looks like an alien) called Thunder in the boulder. He didn't know what hit him or why!
Only after the confession, did the possibility of murder surface. Vicky is summoned via an anonymous phone call, but the caller was killed in a hit-and-run accident before she could get there from Denver. When it comes to big oil companies, anybody is expendable. For this story, Ms. Coel sought the services and expertise of geologists and an archaeologist.
She has written a series which includes THE EAGLE CATCHER, THE GHOST WALKER, THE STORY TELLER, THE DREAM STALKER, and THE LOST BIRD. More recently, she has released WIFE OF MOON, EYE OF THE WOLF, and THE TIVOLI.
Violent death in a sacred place.......2004-01-01
The Arapahos on the Wind River Reservation are shocked to hear that one of their own has committed suicide while on a vision quest in a place that is sacred to the Indians. Their doubt is reinforced when their priest, Father John, is visited in the confessional by a man who says that his boss killed the Indian. Meanwhile Arapaho attorney, Vicky Holden, who has moved to Denver in order to reduce her attraction to Father John, receives a phone call from a man who wants to meet with her and discuss a matter of concern about the reservation. As she is going to meet with him, he is killed in what is seemingly a hit-and-run accident. Even though these two friends are far apart, their two cases begin to intersect and they share information which will help them solve the mystery. Author Cole inserts some interesting moments in her two characters' lives, such as Vicky's son returning to Denver to live near her and Father John's problems with his assistant when a young woman sues him for sexual assault. The books in this series are all well-written and can be counted on to provide a good read.
Unique detection team pursues killers in big sky country.......2002-08-16
This mystery novel has two interesting features: its spacious settings in Colorado and Wyoming, and its detective team of an American Indian woman and a Catholic priest. Both these lead characters are sympathetic. Indian legends and a secret revealed in the confessional play parts in this story, which is competently told. On the down side, the scheme that drives the murders is not particularly original. The fortuitous intervention of a male friend saves the female sleuth from violence, a much overused convention. It would have been more interesting to read about how a plucky woman outsmarted the bad guys.

Publisher's review.......2004-10-25
This book is the sequel to the author's book, The Winds of Destiny, which The Midwest Review, readers, and other authors gave a five star review. Read the following synopsis and you will find this book very entertaining. The author continues the dramatic and tragic real life story about his family's secret. His previous novel, which critics and readers have given rave reviews, sat the stage for sequels to his dramatic story. Readers demanded sequels to the previous novel. The author agreed to quench their thirst with more true drama about his family. In this dramatic true story, the author finds and visits for the first time the grave of a relative who perished during the great family tragedy, though it is forty-five years after the tragedy occurred. The event was filmed by the author's hometown television station. In this offering, the author, Willie Tee, explores in depth the issues and problems that caused his family's burdensome tragedy during nineteen fifty-seven on his maternal grandparents farm. The tragedy would be kept as a secret from Willie, his siblings, and cousins, who were toddlers when the incident occurred. The secret and its burdens were revealed to them when they became teenagers. A series of tragedies spun from the secret over a forty-year period of time. Perhaps it was coincidental, but this sequel raises some issues about the tragedy that are laden with mystery. This memoir mentions that subsequent deaths and tragedies within the author's family had dates with similar numerical significance. This story explicitly depicts the relativity of dates on which family tragedies occurred. The dates indicate a pattern. It is often said that our lives and its events are destined when we are born. The pattern of dates in which tragedies occurred in the author's family seemed predictable and is eerie. Readers will be inspired by this masterpiece of a story.

Book Description
Features 20 lavish illustrations, detailed maps, more. In the Service of Dragons is the continuation of Robert Stanek's multilayered epic fantasy adventure for young adults begun with The Kingdoms and the Elves of the Reaches and continued through The Kingdoms and the Elves of the Reaches 2, 3, and 4. In his acclaimed The Kingdoms and the Elves of the Reaches books, he introduced us to the story of Ruin Mist, an extraordinary world of magic, adventure and intrigue. Now in the eagerly awaited follow-up, he once again proves himself a wonderful storyteller with a gift for fast pacing and believable storylines. Already hailed as a classic, Robert Stanek's powerful series has been enjoyed by readers all over the world. The Elves of the Reaches returned from exile, bringing grave news. War came to the Kingdoms. Many perished in the turmoil and unrest. An attempt was made to kidnap a princess and assassinate a king. Now, from the ancient past a dark power returns. "The Fourth Wind blows across the mountain tops," they say. And the Twelve Clans emerge from myth and memory. Bold, inventive, brilliantly imagined, In the Service of Dragons is a novel of magic and wonder-a tale of pure excitement you will not soon forget.
Customer Reviews:
Don't miss any book in this series.......2007-10-05
I've been a mother for 16 years and I've never had all of my children read and fight over the same book before. But then my husband started reading the first book at the same time as my 12-year old who didn't want anyone else to read it while he was reading it. My 12-year old started hiding it under his pillow but his brother found it and was sneaking reads too. All three fought over who got to read when all the way to the end of the fourth book.
The Titans and Dragons emerge from the shadows!.......2007-09-29
In the Service of Dragons is the first book of the Dragon series. The book picks up after the historic decision of King Andrew to support the elves and begins to tell the story of how the men of the kingdoms work to save the elves of the reaches. It is in this book that you get a better sense of the fantastic world Robert Stanek has created and all the wonders it contains. This book is pure excitement from the opening to the end, and I enjoyed every moment of it.
If you have been resisting the Kingdoms and Dragons books because they sound like a Tolkien wannabe, don't-read it now. Although the parallels are obvious--a world of elves, men and fantastic creates--the author is not out to mimic Tolkien but to offer a vastly different vision of what a magical world would be like. In Tolkien's world, the alliances between peoples is what saves the day, in Stanek's world, the alliances of old have shattered, men and elves were more often foes than friends, and the world was once ruled by dragons and titans.
For all its darkness, author Robert Stanek has crafted an extremely well-paced and exciting book. From the first page on, you won't be able to put it down until you find out what is happening and whether Xith will be able successful in his attempt to save Vilmos from himself.
As this is the first volume of the quartet, surely there is more excitement to come.
no details and no plot.......2007-09-19
The writing style in this book is so sparse that every page is a struggle to visualize what is going on. There are no vivid character descriptions and details of important places are often just noted by colors such as the "grey castle" or a "red mountain". Also very frustrating is the lack of plot. I mistakenly ordered this thinking it was a part of a stand alone series - but there are 4 books before this one (the kingdom and elves series). You would think that surely something must be going on at this point, but nothing seems to be happening. Most of the book consists of boring dialog from characters who all sound alike. The lack of imagination with the titles of the sequels (In Service of Dragons Book 2, In Service of Dragons Book 3, etc.) gives a strong hint on how dull this book is.
Harry Potter eat your heart out!.......2007-05-25
It's not Harry Potter and it's not meant to be. Robert Stanek has created a marvelous story that has captured readers from all age groups. His writing has been compared to JRR Tolkien, JK Rowling and CS Lewis. He deserves all the success he's achieved. I've read all 4 Kingdoms books and couldn't wait to start the Dragon books.
You have only to read the first few scenes of this book to get a sense of the sweeping majestic scope of these stories. The author captivates the imagination with prose that draws his readers in like few others can. While the stories have some standard fantasy elements, the author uses them in fresh, innovative ways, and also introduces much that is new.
For me, the many characters are some of the best aspects of the story. In this one, I enjoyed getting to know some of the other characters better, especially the young prince. The world ofthe story seems a character. The world has multiple levels of reality called UnderEarth, MiddleEarth, and OverEarth. UnderEarth is a place without sun, moon or stars. It has bloodred skies and is a dark place where many strange creatures dwell. MiddleEarth is the place of the kingdoms and reaches. It is where men and elves live. OverEarth is place of the skies. It exists above the clouds of the kingdoms and reaches.
This is most definitely a great read. Read the sample and see for yourself.

Read the sample judge for yourself.......2007-05-14
There is no doubt Robert Stanek is an excellent writer on par with some of the best in any genre. That is unquestionable - all you have to do is read the samples provided to see this. He has a strong voice, and a unique style. Read the sample judge for yourself.
As I read the opening scenes, I was drawn immediately into a bold new fantasy world of titans, giants, and men. I knew immediately this book was for me and could see why Tolkien and Rowling fans enjoy this author's writing. The author has a strong command of language. He paints scenes with a master's stroke and his books have many strong characters.
