In a mere 176 pages, French writer Dan Franck's My Russian Love details the history of a love affair that spans two decades. The story begins on a train when 40-year-old Luca, a successful French filmmaker, glimpses a woman in the dining car. An unusual gesture she makes transports him back in memory to Paris of the 1970s. That's when Luca, then a young film student, first met Anna, a Russian girl whose parents sent her to France to study. The two fell in love but were separated when Anna was suddenly called back to the Soviet Union. The rest of the novel follows Luca's quest to find the girl on the train and perhaps solve the mystery of Anna.
The novel is short, the story deceptively simple, but the themes Franck explores are profound ones. The author's experience as a screenwriter is apparent throughout, both in his characterization of the world Luca travels and in the scenes themselves, which are as finely crafted as if seen through the lens of a discerning cinematographer.
Book Description
My Russian Love opens in the present as Luca, a successful 40-year-old screenwriter, is returning to Paris from newly renamed St. Petersburg, where he intends to shoot a film based on a short story by Pushkin. In the dining car of the train, five tables in front of him and across the aisle, he sees a woman make an unusual gesture, tossing her hair back and putting her palm to the back of her neck in pain. The gesture shocks him, awakening a twenty-year-old memory he had thought buried forever. Before he can react, the girl rises from the table and disappears.
The memory is of a girl named Anna, the great love of Luca's youth, and the rest of the novel is a braid woven of two strands: how Luca and Anna met, fell in love, and were separated; and Luca's increasingly desperate effort to find the girl he glimpsed on the train.
What follows, in flashback, is a recounting, in passionately intimate detail, of Luca and Anna's affair. Despite its simplicity of style, My Russian Love is a complex, seamless love story spanning a generation, and effortlessly switching locales between St. Petersburg, Paris, and New York. The ending is an explosive secret few readers will guess in advance, and it is shattering.
Soaked in art, poetry, music, and film, My Russian Love packs an emotional wallop."
Customer Reviews:
an intense love story.......2000-10-28
This is much more than your run of the mill love story because if its intensity and strong writing. We travel seamlessly between Paris and Russia as the narrative switches from the narrator's current train ride to his older love affair with the beautiful Anna. His memory starts when he spies someone on the train making one of Anna's most intimate gestures, but he cannot find her. This sighting starts him on his personal quest both to finish the film he's working on and to come to a sense of closure in this relationship.
Though the plot is fairly straightforward, the author brings us to more profound levels of emotion through the characters' interactions and love story. Though it's a quick read, it's not a simple read and there are some breathtaking scenes that will stay with you long after the close of the novel. The ending felt a bit too cinematic, but I overall I really enjoyed this book. His 1991 book Separation won the Prix Renaudot, so I plan on finding that one next.

Customer Reviews:
Too narrow of focus and too slim on content.......2006-12-19
The book is thinner than I expected/hoped (guess I should have checked the page count) and has only seven pages of source material for the massive marvel world. There is absolutely no support from Marvel and only two sourcebooks ever published, so that's huge in my opinion. Most of the book is dedicated to the system. You can however find descriptions of 40 heroes and villains from the marvel universe which is nice but brief.
Also, the system is too narrowly focused for me because the range of abilities goes from 1 to 10 leaving very little room for the awesome range of ability that should exist in the marvel universe.
That it is more free form and somewhat simpler than many RPGs may appeal to some people and the game is presented as though you are writing your own comic which has a nice sense of style.
Great game for frist time gamers.......2006-02-22
This is a great game for frist time players but if you are use to having dice to roll can be hard.
Lack of specificity is both strength and weakness.......2005-05-25
MURPG has its strengths, foremost among them ease of play. However, there is very little differentiation between characters of approximate strength and/or ability (as already mentioned).
MURPG does have one significant strength that its developers may have overlooked. Because it focuses on recource allocation, it is excellent for online play (no fudging of die rolls). In the online groups in which I participate, the focus is more on the cinematic nature of the game, rather than the mechanics itself. Its simplicity allows the players a great deal of freedom, and allows for a load of fun.
I recommend this system for novice roleplayers, or players wishing for a quick & easy system of not-so-serious roleplaying.
The Perfect Game..........2004-11-29
At first, I was hesitant to buy this book coz i under-estimated its size, plus it got no dice roll stuff. But to my surprise, it got all that i was expecting for a well designed and well balanced game of Superheores/Supervillains.
Though this book doesn't contain the complete lists of all the superheores that every marvel comic fan is expecting, but hey, the rules are all here. No more tons of cross referencing to several books. Just one, simple, straight to the point rules. I think this is the way how RPG should be.
The stone system is cleverly designed! Just like in real life. The more you exert effort, the more you will succeed, but you will most likely tire yourself out. Resting is a solution, but can you do it if you are badly outnumbered by the bad guys? This is the thrill and the challenge! It's a matter of how wisely you use the energy that you have.
The character progression takes a bit long coz you need to record the actions/stunts/experiences that your character had gone through. But it's just like telling a story by keeping a record of it. And it's no nonsense coz the experience speaks for itself, unlike the other RPG. The action that you record will determine your action difficulty to perform. The more experience you are in an action, the less difficulty you will encounter in doing it again.
This is a major improvement to the Marvel saga system. The powers that were vague in the previous rules were made clear in this book. Like the Mastery of Elements, it gives a well defined limitation on up to how wide the scope of ones power can reach. Having a Mastery of magic as an action doesn't mean you have a god-like power to do almost anything you want, but simply what you can only do in a balanced manner. Overall, it's a nice game. Greatly recomended.
An awesome RPG..........2004-05-13
This is the first RPG I've come across that uses a system with no dice! Which means it makes for easy online adaptation and puts the game more in the hands of the players. It's got tons of good information, statistics and biographies for all of the biggest names in Marvel, a built-in starter mission, and a flexible creation system allowing you to create your very own super heroes and villains.
There are really only a few problems I have with this book. First off, it's a really small book. While it is a lot cheaper then all the other RPG rule books out there, it seems like they could have included a lot more without having to raise the price. Also, the system has a very slow skill development proccess. It will take your character a very long time before they will be able to use their skills as well as the characters from the comic books can. Aside of that though, it's a lot of fun and a much better system then all the dice-based ones rolling around.

The fourth volume of the excellent Marvel Super Heroes game roster
encyclopedia, basically. Very useful, indeed, even for comic fans in

Customer Reviews:
A great addition!.......2004-05-21
This book is filled with more information about the Hulk and the Avengers then I could find on any online source. It has a lot of new profiles for heroes and villains encountered by both the Avengers and the Hulk, which naturally leads to a few villains and heroes that have encountered other Marvel characters like Scorpion and Shocker from Spiderman. It's also got a lot of new actions, options, modifiers, and a few advantages, disadvantages, and challenges. It's as big an upgrade to the game as the guide to the X-men was if not bigger. The only thing I thought I would get that I didn't was a better description of Asguard and other magical realms. Oh well, aside from that, it's a great upgrade.
If you're interested in the Avengers, find the old TSR books.......2004-03-29
Once again the people in charge of Marvel roleplaying books have made a blunder. Their inability to even give the complete Avengers roster shocked me! I intended to buy this book til I thumbed through it, and couldn't find updated stats for Hank Pym. If you're at all interested in Marvel roleplaying games go find TSR's old MSH system, while a bit old and out of date both Avengers Assembled and Avengers Coast to Coast are deeper and more worthwile!
Battle Ready!.......2004-02-14
The Avengers. Earth's Mightiest Heroes. With this, the third supplement from Marvel entertainment and Q.E.D. Games, you can take on the role of many Avengers. It's got a great list of stats fols. Great supplement for the best Super Heroes RPG on the market. If you have reservations, don't... buy this game.

Heroes protecting the Earth from the scum of the DC Universe.......2001-06-13
West End Games's last production was the DC Universe. Using the Legend System, a variation of the last D6 system that marked its story with games like Star Wars, Men In black and Xena the Warrior Princess now takes us in the universe of classic heroes like Batman and Superman. This book is fully complete with information of events from the DC Universe since 1989 to 1999. The only reason it isn't rated with 5 stars is that a few rules like any first edition RPG are with some "errors" but nothing that can be fixed, so other books have more rules and you can find erratas in the web site or in mailing lists. The new rules are very easy and the Game Master doesn't have to check too many tables like the older book, the construction of devices is one of the most creative ideas for this version, now you can easily build itens from a simple Wacky Ray Rod to a Off-road Batmobile (obviusly if your character has the proper skills... And money). The first 128 pages of the books are fully colored and the other 125 pages are in green, black and white which makes the book worth its price.

This book contains scores of intriguing puzzles and paradoxes from Lewis Carroll, the author of Alice in Wonderland, whose interests ranged from inventing new games like Arithmetical Croquet to important problems in symbolic logic and propositional calculus. Written by Carroll expert and well-known mathematics author Martin Gardner, this tour through Carroll's inventions is both fun and informative.
Customer Reviews:
the editorial review math is exactly correct!.......2005-04-21
Ok, since there is some confusion on the issue, let me explain how the 2/3 comes about. We are looking for the probability that the second marble is white, given that the first one pulled out of the bag was.
First intuitively - if you think about it, if there had been 2 white marbles in the bag to start with you're more likely to have pulled out a white marble on the first draw than you would have if the bag started with one white and one black. That is, knowing that you pulled out a white marble, it's more likely that both marbles were white than it is that there was one of each.
Now mathematically - this is called conditional probability. Because of the problem description, before drawing the bag could either contain one of each color or two white marbles, each of these options with probability .5 (50%). If the bag has one of each, your probability of drawing white first is .5, and if it has two whites your probability of drawing white first is 1 (100%).
So, the (compound) probability that the bag has one of each *and* you get white first is .5 x .5 = .25 and the probability that the bag has both white and you get white first is .5 x 1 = .5. So, the total probability of getting white first is the sum of the probabilities of these two possible ways of that occuring, .75.
Now, the actual probability that was requested was that of there being a white marble in the bag after taking out a white one...that is, what's the probability of the bag having had 2 white marbles if you know it had at least one. This should be the same as the probability of getting two white marbles divided by the probability that the first marble was white.
Probability notation for this conditional probability is
P(W2|W1) = P(W1 & W2)/P(W2)
Which then is .5/.75, which is equal to 2/3 - the number given in the editorial. The result does maybe initially seem to be a strange number, but there is no wiggle room here. It's correct.
Letter to the editorial review.......2005-03-11
The Editorial has single handedly solved a modern dilemma in the world of Mathematics. I do believe it has been said that it is better to be assumed a fool then to open your mouth and remove all doubt. The final conclusion is that the contradiction leads us to realize a possible incompleteness in the system. Here is how:
Solution #1 As the state of the bag, after the operation, is necessarily identical with its state before it, the chance is just what it was, viz. 1/2. Solution #2 Let B and W1 stand for the black or white counter that may be in the bag at the start and W2 for the added white counter. After removing white counter there are three equally likely states:
Inside bag------Outside bag
W1--------------W2
W2--------------W1
B ---------------W2
In two of these states a white counter remains in the bag, and so the chance of drawing a white counter the second time is 2/3. This contradiction of the first solution might indicate that the system offers an incomplete answer (not that the first answer was wrong).
Essential for Lewis Carroll fans.......2002-01-08
Lewis Carroll was in "real life" Charles Dodgson, lecturer in mathematics at Oxford University and author of books on geometry and logic. Mathematics intrudes into his children's books, especially Sylvie and Bruno. There is nobody better qualified to explain this side of Lewis Carroll to the non-mathematician than Martin Gardner, author of the Annotated Alice and for many years the compiler of the Mathematical Puzzles column in Scientific American. This book will delight Carroll's many fans and may intrigue many who would not normally be attracted to children's fiction. I also recommend the two books on Lewis Carroll's puzzles by Edward Wakeling; as a professional mathematician, he brings a complementary perspective.
