Victoria Thompson's Gaslight Series is an enjoyable entrance into late 19th century New York City. New York's majesty is already apparent at this time, and there is definitely a hint of how much more this will grow with the years. Also, Ms. Thompson crafts likeable and agreeable characters, as well as a fast-moving mystery plot that will keep your interest. She blends this all with a little romance, and all together they make for an enjoyable book. Sarah Brandt always manages to find herself enmeshed in a mystery, and then she calls upon her friend, Frank Malloy to help her out. In this one Sarah becomes embroiled with a Christian mission that helps young girls escape from lives of poverty, despair and inevitable prostitution. Who is killing girls from this mission? You can bet Sarah just has to find out. These books are quite fascinating.

Murder on Mulberry Bend by Victoria Thompson is the fifth book in the Gaslight Mystery series starring New York midwife Sarah Brandt and Detective Sergeant Frank Malloy. Unlike many long term series that lose their steam after the first book, the Gaslight series just seems to get better with each entry. After Sarah becomes involved in a mission for young girls, one of them is found murdered. Sarah is determined to bring the killer to justice, and Frank is just as determined to keep Sarah safe. Thompson does an amazing job of leaving clues and laying the groundwork for the reader to figure out who the murderer is without giving the whole show away. The real power in this series is the relationship between Sarah and Frank. Thompson has a way of capturing the emotion between the two of them that draws the reader right into the scene: Brian's visit to the doctor, Frank's insult to Sarah on the street, and Frank's sudden appearance at Sarah's after he thought she was dead are just a few of these scenes. Few writers have the power to convey the depth of emotion Thompson does with just a few simple words. The ending isn't wrapped up too tightly, giving hope for many more to come in this series.

It's fun but easy to guess.......2006-03-29

I read this book with excitement. It seemed to me that the author gave us enough clues to guess who the murderer was and why. In contrast, both main characters didn't get them, these brought me the excitement and really wanted to know when they would know the truth.

Another Great Entry.......2004-03-15

This is one of my favorite mystery series that is currently being published. While the mysteries themselves are interesting (although the culprit in this particular book was easier to figure out than usual), the relationships between the recurring characters is what makes me look forward to reading each book. The main characters, midwife Sarah Brandt and policeman Frank Malloy, are both likeable and the banter between them is fun without being obnoxious and adds some romance and lightness to the darker side of the books.

And there is indeed a dark side to this book. In addition to the murder of a young lady, there are vivid descriptions of what it was like to live in turn-of-the-century New York, particularly if you were an immigrant and/or poor. The lives of the immigrants was not a pleasant one and I have to wonder if the life in New York was better than what they had escaped.

There is also a big clue to the unsolved murder of Sarah Brandt's husband from three years previous and that clue is not going to lead to much happiness for anyone if it plays out the way it looks to be headed. Really looking forward to the next book, Murder on Marble Row.

19th Century New York City, with its desperate poverty, dazzling excesses, corrupt administrations, and flood of immigrants has long been fertile ground for crime fiction. Like Caleb Carr and Jack Finney, Victoria Thompson is one of the few writers to successfully utilize and represent this world without imposing our 21st Century values on it.

Murder on Mulberry Bend, specifically, best captures this fascinating cityscape. The unlikely team of midwife Sarah Brandt and Detective Sergeant Frank Malloy is a pleasure to watch interact. The tensions between them--romantic and professional--really come to a crisis point here. The murder mystery element of the book is what we've come to expect from Ms. Thompson: twisting, suspenseful, and completely satisfying. But this story gives us an added bonus: we get a very compelling hint as to who may have murdered Sarah's beloved husband, Tom. Read it and enjoy!

If you are a horse lover you will appreciate this deck not only for its stunning artwork of horses ,but also for it's wisdom. Even if you're not, the deck is a beauty to hold and look at and work with. The insights are eloquent and uncannily accurate when a question is posed, or when used for a daily inspiration. I really didn't want to write this negative review but... I did not enjoy this long drawn out book. I won't mention that the editors did not do their job and should be fired, that's another story. The characters were not likable in any way. You have Stephen who was rude, obnoxious and just plain mean. Then there was Gina who was indecisive, crazy, and dense. Any woman who still hangs out with a would-be rapist and then defends the rapist to the person who saved you is just foolish. As for the story, at times I didn't even understand what was going on. It was unbelievable and boring. The story had so much violence that seemed unnecessary. I didn't understand why Gina had to be beat up so much. At the end of the story (where it should have been put to rest), why is Gina still blaming herself for Stephen losing his demented "mother"? It makes no sense. The mother is responsible for the pain that Gina has endured and happily told Gina of how she hates her son. So why does Gina blame herself for the split between mother and son? These are the kinds of questions that I was left with after reading this book. I am so disappointed b/c I had wanted to get the author's next book Promises Unspoken but Whispers left such a foul taste in my mouth that I return Promises and Hearts of Fire.

As A whole, I enjoyed reading Whispers From the Heart. Once I resigned myself that I was reading one of the stereotypical drugstore romances that we used to tease Fabio for being the cover model of , I got into it. I must admit, the love scenes were well written however, I was surprised how quickly Gina gave it up. I also felt that she could have been a little stronger as a heroine. In addition, I found myself being severely distracted by the typos, lack of subject- verb agreement, transposed sentences etc. I mean I could overlook one or 2 typos and I am certainly no Strunk or White but damn! Did anybody proofread this book before it was published? The publishing company and the author should hang their heads in shame over that one. Aside from that I found this book to be an enjoyable read.

If you liked the first one, you'll love this one.......2006-11-14

After the explosive ending on the first book, I was hesitant to read the second one (just in case you haven't read the first one, I won't give it away--but just be warned that in the last three pages, there is a shocking ending. However, the second one has a happier ending and less of the graphic violence than the first one. The dialogue is cheesy, but that lends to the development of the main character--you get a good mental image of what he's like. One thing that I really liked about the book is that the author has a way of portraying his characters that is based on personality--he never mentions a character's nationality but allows you to visualize the person based on their characteristics and dialogue, not race.

In Whispers From a Troubled Heart by Rique Johnson, Detective Jason Jerrard wakes up from a coma, after being shot, with the realization that he was not the only target of his ex-wife. As memories come flooding back, he discovers his ex-wife not only killed herself, but Sasha, his beloved girlfriend as well. Heartbroken, Jason dives back into work before the doctors clear him for duty. It does not take long for Jason to find himself in another love-triangle with Monique, an old flame from his past, and a mystery woman he meets in a restaurant. Jason's love-life along with a killer who is watching his ever y move and you have an exciting mix of drama and suspense.

Although I found the plot interesting, I did not find Jason's actions plausible. For instance, as the story opens, Jason is heartbroken because the love of his life has been killed. He is painted as being so distraught that the reader can not help but to wonder how he will go on without the woman he loved with all of his heart. Within days, Jason carries on an affair with a married woman and soon begins a romance with his old flame, Monique. Even though he says he needs time to get over the death of Sasha, he moves Monique into his home knowing that she is in love with him and wants a future. Despite an unrealistic portrayal of someone presented as being knee-deep in grief, Johnson moved the story and kept me interested as I flipped pages to see where Jason's fate would end.

If you like suspense and drama, Whispers in the Dark will prove an interesting read.

Whispers from a Troubled Heart from start to finish is full of suspense and twist. Each breath that you take while reading it prepares you for the dips and turns it takes on a non-stop rollcoaster ride of suspense. The romance and love found and renewed by Det Jerrard is deep and truly comes to life and embraced my heart. I fell in love with Det. Jarred in Love & Justice, but in Whispers from a Troubled Heart, Monique was my girl!
Every word on each page of this book came to life for me, the characters and their roles were very real and intense. Rique's writing style is so strong and captiving, I hated to have to read the last page of this book, as I can only wait and imagine what he has in store for us next in the Det. Jerrard series.

When my Grandmother died, I felt empty and dull. I began reading from this book, and I was not only encouraged, but lifted-up; and my faith in our Lord's love came rushing back into my heart again. I cried with the women's stories of loss and was joyful when God answered their prayers or made his loving presence known to them. I laughed with some of the more amusing stories and was amazed at how God worked in these women's lives to reveal a lesson or a purpose to them. I especially enjoyed the story where the couple moved to Oklahoma, and the strange lady next door became a close friend to the young woman. I was inspired and felt admiration for the woman and how she was so open and observant, looking-out for ways the Lord might teach her. And he did. To be a servant, of all things. Boy, if we could just serve one another in love, this world would be an amazing place to live.

They were submitted to magazines but they were never published, that is until now. I've also decided to include a recent story from 1999; it is called "The Realization Of An Awakening Spirit. It is a story about someone who realizes what a mistake she made when she let someone special leave her life; in other words, never let the one you love, go. Thank you for reading them. This is another collection of stories with the author's favorite story (even to this day) included. Soft Whisper From A Quiet Heart is a powerful story, with the heroine doing most of the talking, you feel each of her emotions as she reveals every feeling that she has. An intense story involving 2 mismatched people and the struggles that she deals with, as she tries to escape the intense grasp of her intense and short tempered boy friend.
