Amelia Peabody Emerson is the Mary Poppins of Egypt. Forthright, intrepid, and industrious, she brooks no nonsense from anyone and is armed with an apparently magical parasol. As the legions of fans of Elizabeth Peters's Edwardian archeological mystery series know, Amelia is also possessed of a swift temper, an incorrigible curiosity, and an uncanny proclivity for attracting trouble. But in 1915, with the world gripped by the madness of war, trouble is endemic. In an effort to prevent their son Ramses from being coerced into working for British intelligence (in the sort of endeavor that nearly got him killed a year earlier when he infiltrated a band of Egyptian nationalists and prevented a Turkish-backed uprising), Amelia and husband Emerson and the rest of their dizzyingly large entourage flee England for the reassuringly stoic splendor of their beloved Egyptian ruins.

So much for a quiet dig among the mastabas. With their usual luck, the family promptly finds itself inundated by would-be assassins and nosy journalists. Amelia quickly deduces that Ramses's undercover work is at the root of both threat and curiosity; more puzzling is the appearance of the odd corpse or two and a rash of stunningly efficient tomb robberies. When Ramses and his wife, Nefret, travel to Luxor to check on the security of some of their old excavations, they find an all-too-familiar irritant behind the robberies. It would be telling to reveal his identity, but fans of the series will soon figure it out, with the aid of a little suspension of disbelief. With Ramses and Nefret on one hand, and Amelia and Emerson on the other, engaged in "protecting" the other side from conflict and trouble, the novel unfolds in a merry chase of misdirection and miscommunication.

There is a comforting consistency to Peters's series. By now, all of the characters' quirks are etched in stone like so many well-worn hieroglyphs. Amelia's narrative has the familiarity of a treasured and oft-read letter from a slightly batty aunt. Even the miraculous return of (no, I really can't say), though perhaps intended as a radical plot twist, adheres to the most genteel of mystery traditions, à la Doyle and Christie. Innovation can be overrated; with Peters's flawless record of producing amusing, easily digested novels showing no signs of faltering, fans should devour this morsel--and wait impatiently for the next tasty installment. --Kelly Flynn

5 out of 5 stars Another intriguing book from Peters........2007-10-05

I have enjoyed this whole series and it keeps going strong with Lord of the Silent.

1 out of 5 stars amateurish blather.......2006-12-09

Elizabeth Peters (aka Barbara Michaels) used to know how to write a great, scary mystery. Now she needs to hang it up.

1 out of 5 stars Confusing and long-winded.......2006-06-14

This was the first of Ms. Peters' books that I read. Maybe if I had had the background of the other books, I would have found it more interesting. As it was, I kept thinking "Get on with it already". There were too many exceprts about Nefret and her hubby and then it would switch back to Peabody and Emerson, and it rarely went back to the murder. When it did, there were so many characters and so many nicknames for characters that I was totally confused and often had to go back in the book to see who was who. The setting in this book and Peabody's wit kept me reading, though.

2 out of 5 stars Dull and Dry.......2005-11-17

I was thoroughly disappointed while reading Lord of Silent, as the overall action and suspense was kept almost at a minimum.

It seems almost as if Peters went on a long tangent about the Emerson's family life, writing a lot of filler to go along with the main plot. Until the last forty pages or so, I struggled to get through the book because there was no suspense at all. No cliff-hangers or anything of the sort.

Ramses and Nefret, though darling, only thickened the struggle. I don't think that all the interaction between them was really necessary; perhaps Peters wanted to throw in some romance, but is wasn't working.

Lord of the Silent is a sheer failure of Peters's story-telling skills, as in many of her other books her talent proves to be quite brilliant. Save your money and buy a different Peters's book.

4 out of 5 stars Another strong entry in this wonderful series........2005-10-30

This book is another page-turner. I so enjoy the Emersons when they are right in the thick of things. This book is a little different though because there appears to be two parallel stories at first, and the older Emersons are in Cairo following one thread, and the two younger Emersons are in Luxor following another thread. But of course they end up investigating together, and that iw when the fun begins. It's nice to see Ramses and Nefret in their newly-wed bliss. Let me tell you, Indiana Jones has nothing on our Ramses. But Emerson and his Amelia are no slouches either. We also see a new and more emotional Amelia and that is a good thing. She does her utmost to keep her son away from harm in this book and neither of them have gotten over his harrowing escape from death in the last book. But there's still lots of danger, tomb-robbing and deaths in this one and it's such a great deal of fun getting to the bottom of it with these four amazing people.

3 out of 5 stars Lots and lots of history.......2001-11-03

This book covers a lot of ground. It looks at disciplines, some info on the feeding restriction, some example characters and history and history and history and history. More than half of this book looks at the history of the clan. Much of the description of the clan is taught in terms of the history around the lesson learned by the clan. As history goes, this is well done, but if you are wanting a consice description of the clan you will not find it here.

3 out of 5 stars YOU WANNA BE RICH??? OK BUT REMEMBER ..YOU ARE A VAMPIREEEE!.......2001-01-04

This book seems like a guide to the busisness guy...BOY don't you remenber that you are a creature of the night? The history part of the book is poor conpared whith the other clanbooks and even whith the old one,the large part of the book explains the so call :ventrue society, something pretty booring after reading the same stuff in all the white wolf books that spell the word VENTRUE....guys.. the clan has a lot of potential for many things not ongly to be a large corporation owned by inmortals there are almost no new disciplines ,and one merit...the art wasn't great except shy's portraits and other ventrue of note could have been added...for such clan whith that much potential this book coul have been MUCH better

    4 out of 5 stars Noble Blood.......2000-09-09

There is good material in the new edition of CLANBOOK VENTRUE including many of the new CLANBOOK series' standard features- clan disciplines explained, discipline variations given, a new merit, a sample brood, noteworthy Ventrue, player character templates, and MIND'S EYE THEATRE stats. There is exploration of Ventrue history (and its revision over the years) and detailed description of the clan's organization. The "Secret Masters" material from the original book seems to have been dropped, though- a problem only because of discontinuity with the Dark Ages Ventrue material in LIBELLUS SANGUINIS I.

The Sabbat material, although limited, is OK and includes territory shifts between Sabbat and Camarilla in the 19th century US. Templates include an antitribu follower of the Path of Power and the Inner Voice (no Honorable Accord, though) and a really mean anarch who could easily be Sabbat instead. (This installment's Sabbat typo is omission of the designation "antitribu" on the appropriate templates' sample character sheets.)

A major problem is that, like the original, this new book lacks specifics about the Ventrue weakness. Although it examines how Ventrue neonates develop their restricted feeding preferences and how preferences change, specific preferences are not listed either for the player character templates or the noteworthy Ventrue. (This is omitted in most VtM supplements, unfortunately- a notable exception being NEW ORLEANS BY NIGHT, if you can find it.) No examples of or guidelines for playable feeding preferences are discussed.

However, to be fair, there is helpful, practical discussion about how Ventrue establish and conceal their herds. (To offer more explicit advice: playable Ventrue characters generally require strong Herd ratings.) Also, except for the "Vitaephile", you can probably guess prey restrictions for the player character templates from their descriptions. Still, contrast this with the much clearer handling of derangements in the new CLANBOOK: MALKAVIAN.

    4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good........2007-10-01

This book is the fifth installment in a 13-book series based on the White Wolf "Vampire: The Masquerade" gaming system. As such it has no proper ending or beginning; in spite of that rather large flaw, and the fact that it is rare for a book based on a gaming system to stand on its own well, I find this book to have been quite well-written, the characterizations good, the plot excellent if you like intrigue and scheming (if you don't, this is definitely NOT the series for you) and the actual wordsmithing to be better than most for a mass-market paperback, more than passably competent. Either the series is getting better as it goes along, or I'm gradually being drawn into the ongoing plot as it finally begins to show signs of ripening; a plot that will take thirteen books to come to fruition by nature must move slowly, but in any case I've found the fourth and fifth books of the series to be far better and more interesting than any of the first three. I'm still not entirely sure about the series; I think that a thirteen-book series may be a bit over-ambitious for the concept (I understand that the reason for the number is that that's how many different clans there are, and it was desired to feature one clan in each novel, but I still am unconvinced that there's really enough plot here for that many books) but I'm not willing to write the series off as a failed experiment yet. I'll finish it out before passing judgement.

5 out of 5 stars If you like vampire stories............2007-05-13

If you like vampire stories, read this series. It's full of all the plotting and intrigue you would expect from characters who live forever. I mean, what else do they have to do. The whole series is full of unexpected plot twists.

4 out of 5 stars One of the better clan novels.......2006-07-04

This was one of the better of the clan novels.. Although not my favorite (Lasombra), it held up very well and gave more details about the strategy of the ongoing war efforts. Reads very fast.

4 out of 5 stars Setting Up The Middle Game.......2004-12-18

The Ventrue are the politicians of the Camarilla. They can be glib, polite, and socially conscious, by never forget that down deep it is power, and the glory that attends it that draws them to the flame. Many have a considerable talent for this and have become the primogens and princes of vampire establishments. They are not, characteristically, experimenters or iconoclasts. They are committed to the laws of the Camarilla and the increase of their personal power. They are stodgy - so much so that even Fleming, who is a traditionally oriented writer, can't resist some humor at their expense.

Jan Pieterzoon is the novel's central character, come to Baltimore to help the Camarilla reeling form the attack of the Sabbat in Atlanta find a functional defense before US vampires fall into complete lawlessness. Powerful in his own right and scion of the Ventrue justicar Pieterzoon is best at keeping the panic within limits and keeping the Camarilla from dissolving.

He is balanced by Victoria Ash, Toreador, who will continue to play a major part in these novels. She is a vampire who uses her own seductiveness to control at a subtler level than Pieterzoon, who is a 'bottom line' sort of vampire. And lurking in the background is Colchester, a Nosferatu, and the character who persistently steal the show. Flemings characters are usually strong, and Clan Venture is no exception.

This is not a heavily plotted book. The focus is on the Camarilla's efforts to regroup after the Sabbat uprising and is more of a panarama of tidbits that move the larger picture along. Most of the action serves for character development and the setting of the themes to come, but there is nothing like a Camarilla turn around, and a great deal of breast beating by the losing side.

4 out of 5 stars More an extended chapter than a book.......2000-05-29

This book is more of a transitional interlude than a stand alone story. It shows results of things that happened in previous books and sets up things that will happen in later books. Specifically, it deals with the Camarilla trying to regroup and manage the refugee situation in Baltimore after the successful Sabbat seiges in Atlanta and D. C. They have a lot of meetings, discuss a lot of strategy, scheme and manipulate. It has a much more panoramic approach to its story than Fleming's other contribution to the series CLAN NOVEL: GANGREL. Although these proceedings are very well presented with a lot of fine, small details, it probably will not hold your interest well if you are not following the whole series.

Unless, that is, you are really interested in watching the Ventrue at work.

What saves the book and makes it more than a manditory exercise is Fleming's ability to develope his Ventrue characters and the intrigues involving them- much of it also involving the seductive Victoria Ash and Nosferatu who play all sides against each other. Although he's giving you the big picture of the Camarilla's situation, Fleming's lens is not so wide that the reader can't get involved in the dealings of two very important Ventrue. First there is the still all too human Camarilla star strategist, Jan Pieterzoon. (Jan's sire is Hardestadt, one of the Camarilla's legendary founders. He appears, too.) Then there is Garlotte, the smarmy Prince of Baltimore, a classic pompous Ventrue bully with a dysfunctional brood of childer apparently sired simply to feed his ego. And just so that virtuous Jan doesn't get to be too much of a white knight, Fleming does some horribly twisted things with the Ventue prey exclusion.

As in GANGREL, Fleming also doesn't shrink from showing the more harsh realities of vampiric existence- whether it's the issues raised by feeding or the cruelties involved in the inforcement of the Masquerade. Even though the book may not have much of a plot on its own, the subplots are dark gems and really flesh out the Ventrue and the special responsibities they feel they carry.

    5 out of 5 stars Ventrue!!.......2007-05-10

"Those taken in Battle, alive or dead i own and i will claim my tribute!" The rallying cry of a true Ventrue lord! To have a Ventrue Prince who's prey exclusion is to only be able to feed off of those he has bested in battle is inspired. Jurgen will never stop. He is compelled by the blood by his beast to continue sweeping the crusading knights of the Black Cross across the eastern europe. What can i say about this book? it rocks my socks! cant fault it. This is how Ventrue are supposed to be. I hate the board room ventrue of the Camarilla and love the Crusaders of the Sabbat. This is how they should be...filled with blood lust, rightousness, noblity and zeal. Fantastic!

4 out of 5 stars Playing for Kingdoms.......2005-10-08

It amazes me how many times I decide that this series is a total loss, only to find that the next volume actually is a good vampire novel. After the disappointment of Dark Ages: Tremere I was pleasantly surprised that Ventrue actually had a plot, developed characters, and was even well written. It displays the potential that lurks within the White Wolf's series when the books aren't simply being written as game fodder.

Ventrue returns to Jurgen's court in Magdeburg to pick up events after Jervais' not quite successful foray into Livonia. With the Telyavel witches destroyed or scattered, it is time for Jurgen to begin the real invasion of Livonia, expanding his territory and taking revenge for the death of Alexander. This time his expedition will include Rosamund, the Tremere ambassador and focus of his affections as well as Gotzon, a Lasombra priest who has been his confessor since Jurgen was first made. Rosamund enables the usually headstrong Jurgen to seek solutions that he would normally ignore. And Gotzon is an unpredictable religious fanatic whose strength is a valuable asset - most of the time.

The taking of Livonia becomes a set of intricate chess moves, with Jurgen using Rosamund and Gotzon to work is way through the political intricacies that seem to follow vampire society even when they live in some of the most godforsaken (literally) terr
Itory in northern Europe. Non-Christian Tzimisce, Gangrel, and Telyavel are the primary opponents but the Cainite heresy appears as well.

The unvampirelike relationship between Rosamund and Jurgen is the key to this tale. For some, like Gotzon, love between vampires is every bit as much of a heresy as the Cainite beliefs. This the affair creates the kind of conflicts around which characters can develop. And McFarland is quick to make use of this opportunity, turning both vampires into complex characters who are understandable both as both humans and vampires. And it is these characters who, in turn, breath life into the story. There are only a few volumes in this series that stand out, and Ventrue is one of them.

    4 out of 5 stars A history text.......2000-04-07

The lineage of the Ventrue Clan is a long one, and the staggering amount of power the clan has achieved clearly stems from this illustrious history. Still, while the history offered in this book is invaluable to a good storyteller, the information is presented in a dry and uninteresting fashion. What's more, too much attention is paid to the clan's history and not enough to it's present or future. Still, one of the best thought through of the clanbooks.

This Clan-book completely misses the point, we already know the Ventrue are the money-makers of the Camarilla. What we wanted from a Clan-book was what was not obvious, the secrets of the Clan, the Outcasts, etc. What we got was useless drivel and quite frankly a waste of money and time.
