Another Shirt Ruined!.......2007-10-09

This is another great Amelia Peabody mystery with all the melodrama, adventure, and comedy you could wish. It follows one of the main story threads of the series as Amelia attempts to track down the Master Criminal!

Get rid of Ramses.......2007-09-22

I am having a problem getting past the third chapter. I enjoyed her first two mysteries when she met her husband-to-be and then the birth of her son Ramses. Now I am getting a bit tired of the bratty son and the recurrent Master Criminal. How about a new plot? I don't know why Peters has made the son such an obnoxious character. Then there is the adolescent relationship between Peabody and Emerson. Who cares, just get to the mystery. Unfortunately, I have purchased three more of her books and will probably skim through them trying to find the mystery.

Elizabeth Peters was born and brought up in Illinois and earned her Ph.D. in Egyptology from the University of Chicago's famed Oriental Institute. Peters was named Grand Master at the inaugural Anthony Awards in 1986 and Grand Master by the Mystery Writers of America at the Edgar Awards in 1998. She lives in a historic farmhouse in western Maryland.

The Amelia Peabody books may or may not be an acquired taste, personally I love them. They are set in Victorian times when there were still very strict rules of etiquette and polite behaviour was the norm. Although most of the books are set in Egypt, in the desert under very trying conditions and extremely hot weather the `English' way of life was still expected to be adhered to, sometimes with quite hilarious consequences.

Amelia Peabody is Elizabeth Peters' best loved and brilliant creation, a thoroughly Victorian feminist who takes the stuffy world of archaeology by storm with her no nonsense dress sense and forthright opinions.

Yet again the lives of Amelia's son Rameses and her husband Emerson rest in her hands. Her prowess as an amateur sleuth is needed when her son is abducted in the dead of night and an expedition haunted by misfortune and death, have alerted her to her arch enemy who has sworn vengeance on Amelia who is determined to bring him to justice as quickly as possible.

Another wild Amelia Peabody ride!.......2004-10-02

I'm beginning to understand why this author's Amelia Peabody series is so popular. The pace is fast, the quips are faster and Amelia and her Emerson are two of the most likeable sleuths out there. They are a perfect foil for each other, and each is a strong character. These books are a nice combination of mystery and romance done with a light hand. In this book Amelia and Emerson take up where they left off in the previous book. They are a year later in their chronicle, but they're still trying to capture the Master Criminal. Who is he and what's his game? They can't seem to figure it out. There are a couple more dead bodies that turn up with this particular quest, and still they don't really know who they're looking for. He is a master of disguise and an elusive phantom that nobody can really describe. But we have a lot of fun throughout anyway.

Incredibly dense........2003-11-04

Though obviously well written and deeply researched, Lion of the Valley is so incredibly dense it's a challenge to read. Every page is so packed with tiny factoids about people, associations, political developments, bond issues, etc., that only a few topics rise above the clutter to stick with the reader. (I found myself frequently going back a page or two to reestablish the identity of a person, place or thing.) But then again, in covering 200+ years of history, how does one limit the subject matter?

Having read other city-specific histories (namely, Chicago and NYC), I view Lion as more of a textbook than an engaging narrative. Informative, enlightening, yes. But not an easy read.

This is simply one of the best books I have read on the history of a city. Not a simple tour of neighborhoods, architecture or ethnic groups that settled in various enclaves of the city, but rather a comprehensive and intelligent look at a city from its earliest days, placed against the backdrop of its development in the region and history. the only comparable book on a city that i have read which is better from an economic and regional development standpoint is nature's metropolis about chicago. one wonders why we do not have more gems like these about all american cities. perhaps we would take better care of our hometowns if we knew more about their past from a thoughtful perspective. anyway, lion of the valley is superb.

A personal favorite.......2004-01-13

I need to be objective and not give this 5 stars; however, for those interested in Ohio history, "Lion of the Forest" is a great read. James Finley could have been just another circuit rider; that in itself would have made his life story interesting. Above and beyond, he was a man ahead of his time. He railed against alcohol abuse, helped cause a split of the Methodist Church because of his strong anti-slavery stance, fought the federal government on behalf of the Wyandot, and worked for the cause of prision reform. All this from a man who was poor his whole life, and who, we deduce from his personal journals, probably suffered from bouts of severe depression. Reading his story made me proud to be an Ohioan.

This book is a great adventure! Korczak succeeds again to describe our world in the eyes of a child; the games of power, envy, the lack of sensibility, the contempt to important things, and, most important, the beauty of life.

A child king, with no friends and no mentors in whom he can fully trust, Matt has to learn all the ways of life in the hard way. He learns, for example, that if you give too much, people (and even children!) will want more and more; everyone needs limits. He also understands that experience cannot be learned in the castle, it has to be lived outside the walls; you cannot rule an army if you have never seen the battlefields. He learns that friendship is a two-way road of trust and love; if you give you will receive. And he learns that you cannot solve all the problems of the world at once, even in the most efficient scheduled day; the body needs rest and peace of mind.

King Matt is a wonderful teacher to a healthy and ethical life, told in a simple language and amusing stories. I warmly recommend this book for children, parents, and educators.

I did not like this book at all........2006-08-06

I just did not like this book at all. Children should not be having parliments. What foolishness this all was. All it does is prove the point that children cannot and should not rule. They are imature! The ending was bad too. I hate books with bad endings. Don't waste your money like I did.

The hidden wisdom behind the adventures of "King Matt the First" .......2005-11-10

If a wise man wanted to share his wisdom with children, he would write "King Matt the First".
I have read "King Matt" 5 times over the last 45 years. I am excited about this new translation and I am looking forward to reading it again! I'd only wish that the second volume "King Matt on a Deserted Island", was available, too.
This is a deep book; underneath the exciting adventures of the little king, it offers a deeply penetrating, child's eye view of our world: Monarchy versus democracy, the upper v. lower class, differences between cultures and countries, the cunningness and hypocrisy of both domestic and international politics, the bureaucracy, racial relations, relations between children and adults, children's rights, boys v. girls, both the value and the absurdities of traditions and customs and just about every other aspect of life.

The second volume, "Matt on a Deserted Island", is unique among children's books. As the little king isolated on a deserted island, spends time alone, reading, writing, thinking, and growing wiser. This volume too is beautiful and full of love and surprising adventures. Unlike most "deep" books for adults, "King Matt" is remains a thriller even as it writes about deep introspection and contemplation of the meaning of life and death, love, friendship, togetherness and aloneness.

At the end, after many spellbinding adventures, Matt returns to his own country, where he establishes democracy.

To me the great value of this book is that it does not offer any answers. It does not promote any belief systems, religion, or values. Instead it opens up an existential inquiry and encourages the readers to think and find their own answers! This approach is characteristic of Jaunsz Korczak's deep respect for the intelligence of his young readers. It is a rare approach in the world where most writers try to stuff the minds of their readers with ready-made answers.

I recommend this book to every intelligent human being from any country, culture and religious background.

Aboslutely GREAT.......2005-09-07

Anyone can love this book, it's exciting, sophisticated, and is overall fantastic. This book should be lined up as a classic, and should be at the top of childrens literature with books such as 'A Wrinkle In Time', 'Holes', 'Number The Stars', and many more. It's that good.

Here's sort of a preview/commercial for the book.

A boy's father dies, leaving him an orphan. But the boys father was king of the land, so the boy became a king. Better known as King Matt the First. He still hardly knows how to read, so he fits that all into his schedule. Humorous rules and actions are put into play, making the scene more interesting. He goes on adventures, life threatening, suicidal, and very intimidating ones. Read the book, and you'll expierience the legend of King Matt the First.

This is truely a gem, something you should pass on. I recommend this.

I read this book as a child and wanted my daughter to read it. I was so happy to see her fall in love with King Matt the First.

I read this book more than 10 years ago and it still haunts me to this day. "Princess" is the most frightening book I have ever read because it is a true story!

In 1992 when this book was first published it became an instant sensation all over the world. This is the first book written about Saudi Arabia that really gives an honest portrayal of what life is really like for the women living in this historically oppressive country. The Saudi government even banned "Princess" because this book candidly "lifts the veil" on the culture surrounding women in their Kingdom.

Ms. Jean Sasson tells the first-hand story of Princess Sultana, a Royal living in the extremely discouraging Saudi Arabia. I have read all of Ms. Sasson's books, but "Princess" is my favorite. I am certain that anyone with a modicum of decency will be outraged and shocked after reading this book.

The book is written in first-person which makes for a very interesting read. Also included in the book is lots of extra info about the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, maps, a glossary and even some pictures. This book was both enthralling and educational because Jean Sasson is a rare writer that has a very gifted talent.

In 1948 the United Nations General Assembly came up with a list of human rights which is supposed to be guaranteed for every single human being; all over the world. This very basic list is called the "The Universal Declaration of Human Rights," and countries such as Saudi Arabia have consistently chosen to ignore these basic human rights.

Why is the Middle East and especially Islamic States such as Saudi Arabia so oppressive towards women? I have asked myself this question ever since I first read Princess Sultana's story. I wish the US would do more, but they are already viewed as a "bully" in this region of the world. Maybe the US cares more about oil than about the millions of women that are living in a modern-day Holocaust?

Jean Sasson wrote two other books about Princess Sultana and her family, Princess Sultana's Daughters and Princess Sultana's Circle (Princess Trilogy); both of which are beyond gripping. I really hope there will be more books updating readers about the Princess and about the plight of women's equality in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. I'd also love to read a book discussing homosexuality within the Middle East/Islamic States, such as the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Gay men (and women) are virtually unheard of and are often murdered or imprisoned simply for being homosexual or lesbian. When the Iranian President recently told Columbia University that there are "no homosexuals in Iran" I had to laugh at his blatant homophobia, hatred, and disregard to human life. What a sick and bigoted statement to make. I also recommend picking up Ms. Sasson's latest book, Love in a Torn Land: Joanna of Kurdistan: The True Story of a Freedom Fighter's Escape from Iraqi Vengeance. This is an excellent tome, as well.

To refer to Saudi Arabia simply as "sexist," is, in my humble opinion a kind word for this dictatorship. Because, at least the word "sexist" has some meaning behind it. But as I learned in "Princess," women have no meaning because they are regarded as property. I really commend Ms. Sasson for having the courage to tell the this very disconsolate story. There isn't even a word for "sexist" in the Arabic language. Without say a word, that manages to say it all!

Excellent Personal Account of Life in Saudi Arabia.......2007-08-31

While reading this book, I was impressed with the writing style and verbage that the author used. It was an interesting look at the inside of The Kingdom that many people know little about. This book was tragically sad in many parts but hilariously funny in others. I am admiring of the Sultana and her strength in personality and character; especially when standing up to her brother and husband. She seems to be truly a good person and is someone I wish I could meet in person. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the position of women in Saudi Arabia.

"Life Behind the Veil" or "Why Being a Girl in Saudi Arabia Really, Really Sucks".......2007-08-17

I'm an educated person, and I am very much aware of the basic freedoms that women in Saudi Arabia are lacking. However, reading "Princess: A True Story of Life Behind the Veil in Saudi Arabia" sheds a whole new light on the horrific realities of life for women in this god-forsaken country.

This book is the real story of Princess Sultana, a member of Saudi Arabia's royal family. The name Sultana is an alias: If anyone in her family learned her true identity, she and her children would face deadly consequences. Instead, Sultana tells her story with the help of author Jean Sasson, a writer who befriended the princess while living and working in Saudi Arabia.

"Princess" details Sultana's upbringing in a home where the father had absolutely no regard for any of his daughters and instead catered only to the desires of his wretched son, Ali. Sultana was tormented by her older brother, and she was always determined to figure out a way to build a better life for herself and attain more rights than women are generally allowed in her country.

In Saudi Arabia, women are forced to wear black veils that cover their entire face. They can't drive cars, live independently, or make any decisions for themselves. Women are not valued as individuals, and in many cases Arabian men view women solely as their own sexual outlets. It's common for women and young girls to be raped by just about anyone. Women can even be stoned to death for their so-called "lewd" behavior, but of course men are never punished for their brutal crimes.

Sultana gives many examples of women she has known who met horrible fates, and she describes her own frustrations of being ruled by her father, brother, and eventually her husband. Because Sultana is a member of the royal family, she has a much better life than most women do in Saudi Arabia, and that's a terrifying thought. Sultana also has a strong, feisty spirit, but even her unflinching determination to change things has little effect on the events that unravel around her.

"Princess" is a wonderful book, but it's also extremely sad because it paints such a vivid picture of the horrors that Arabian women endure on a daily basis. It's almost impossible for me to fathom that a country in our modern world still adheres to these archaic practices, but it's true. Now that I've read this book, I'm anxious to learn more about the current state of affairs in Saudi Arabia: Have things improved even the slightest bit in the past 17 years? I'm almost afraid to find out.

Wow!.......2007-07-11

This book was eye-opening. I had the great fortune of reading it about a year ago, after buying it from a second-hand store. After completing it within two days (which is amazing for me), I felt compelled to tell other people about it. My cousin borrowed it, and she loved it, too (so much that I actually had to steal it back from her when I visited). You learn about the thought process of some of the women of Saudi Arabia, and how they can have a love-hate relationship with their placement in society. You become more aware of human rights violations and their effects. It's very interesting, and it makes you want to do something to help her.

A real life heroin who dares to lift the veil.......2007-06-15

This true story reads just like a novel. It's the story of Sultana, a fiery Princess for the ruling house of Al Sa'ud in Saudi Arabia. Throughout her personal experiences we learn a lot on the status of women in the country regardless of their social rank, and it shows how the culture that they cherish and accept to a certain degree is also one that they hate but have very little power over. This is fascinating and I highly recommend the trilogy to anyone who is interested in women in Saudi Arabia. I also recommend another book "Nine parts of desire" by Geraldine Brooks, which covers the same topic.

McFarland and company put together an excellent source for establishing domains in the DA line. The entire line is represented here, with special consideration given to Mages, Inquisitors (Holy Ground covered as well), Were Wolves, as well as the staple: Vampires (Cainites).

You will want to sit down with your group looking over this book, as major thought is put into establishing group domains. As a GM, I was pleased to see this encouragement on group play.
