Penzler Pick, February 2001: First-time author David Ellis captures the imagination from the very first page with the voice of Marty Kalish, an investment banker in a tony company. Marty recounts the night that led to the murder of Dr. Derrick Reinhardt, the abusive husband of Rachel, with whom Marty is having an affair. The highly original premise of this story is masterful. Although Marty tells us his involvement in the murder, we don't know exactly what that involvement is. Did he murder or did he cover up?

Marty is a hard guy to believe. Like most people, he doesn't always tell all there is to know, so when he is charged with murder and employs the best defense lawyers in the city, he changes his story more than once to insure that he comes out in the best light possible. This both exasperates and earns the respect of his lawyer (as well as the reader), because every story that Marty tells is plausible. He tells us that he meets with a PI, but we won't know why until the last page, and indeed the story does not come together completely until that moment.

In the meantime, Marty takes us on quite a trip. The courtroom scenes in this novel are among the very best. From jury selection to witness interrogation to sidebars with the judge, the scenes and dialogue crackle with authenticity. The only false note in the story is that although Marty is charged with murder, he remains free on his own recognizance both before and during the trial. There must be precedents here, but it seems odd. However, I was happy to overlook that for the sake of an otherwise convincing and spellbinding story. --Otto Penzler

Book Description

Marty Kalish has been accused of murdering his lover's husband. He had a motive. He was at the scene of the crime. He manipulated evidence to hide his guilt. He even confessed. But that's not the end of the story. That's only the beginning.

"The best suspense novel I've read in a while...surprising." (James Patterson)

"Wicked...A twisty spellbinding story." (Publishers Weekly)

5 out of 5 stars Very entertaining!.......2007-10-10

Awesome book. One of the most unique in terms of plot and viewpoint I've ever read. Great stuff.

3 out of 5 stars great first effort but ending ruined it for me .......2007-08-17

I rate this novel 3.5 stars. Let me start by saying I really enjoyed reading this first effort by David Ellis. The courtroom scenes were riveting. I enjoyed the plot as well as the fleshed out characters. Maybe the author set a pretty high standard which made it more disappointing for this reader when things went horribly wrong with the messy ending that was wrapped with a bow for the reader at the very end. Most of the story was extremely well written with all the details threaded throughout. One scene in particular highlights the highs and lows I found while reading. (SPOILER ALERT) The unidentified first person narrative that pops up during trial that tells us it is a 15 year old boy trailing a married man meeting Rachel. He is amazed at their public displays of affection. At first reading I was perplexed, what is this? Is this boy the character who has been providing the italicized narration in the novel? Well that would change things...... at the end, I realized this was a one time narrative and the person who obtained the video and audio of Rachel' secret lover for the private detective on behalf of Marty Kalish. The audio contained very adult sexual content for anyone to hear, let alone a 15 year old boy! How cleverly the author has laid the ground work for the unethical behavior of the private detective at the end and makes his behavior before vacationing in the islands very believeable. However, if this secret couple wasn't that careful, how did they escape detection? Rachel was extremely careful with Marty to make sure NO ONE ever knew about them so why so cavalier about Rudy? I paid no mind to minor incidents like this until and the major one discovered only upon finishing the novel. It opens with Marty waking up in a sweat after the murder, recollecting how poor Rachel was unconscious when he left her and worries about her. We find out this is blantantly untrue. Why would Marty lie to himself when he's thinking things through? It is only there to mislead the reader and I did not like that one bit and it left me feeling cheated. Also, the author certainly knew his stuff when writing about the trial but then why in the world would he have the DA's office continue the prosection of Marty after he cleverly frames Rudy near the end of his own trial? The Police now have a lot of PHYSICAL evidence against Rudy for the murder of Rachel's husband. They only have circumstantial evidence against Marty and their star witness' creditability has just been blown away by super defense attorney Paul. This makes no sense whatsoever except to provide a tidy ending. This would not happen in the real world and the author should know this being an attorney himself by trade. Then to have Rudy be brought to trail after Marty is found not guilty by the jury, only to also be acquitted after Marty makes a deal with him is incredible. In exchange for information from Rudy about himself and Rachel, Marty will testify for Rudy at his trail by claiming the fifth when asked about the murder. To top it all off, Rachel escapes the risk of her immunity being nullified by her blatant perjury. Holy soap opera! Of course the whole story is recapped for us by Marty as he tells his friend Jerry Lazarus everything, just in case the reader didn't get it? But the worst infraction, in my view, was Marty's reconciliation with his mother's memory after the whole thing was over. He reflects to himself that having gone through this experience, it has taught him that you never know what a married woman is feeling and that one should be more empathic. What!?! His mother cheated on his saintly father throughout his childhood by his own recollections and his affair with a married woman proved her to be manipulative and cruel. Marty mentions he always thought his mother's affairs were sexual and now he realizes they were emotional. What part of using you for a sacrifical lamb to cover her other affair did Marty not understand? Or finding out that the real object of Rachel's exhibitionist strip tease was that other man and the fact she knew Marty was watching too only played into her own twisted plans? This is emotion you don't want, trust me, and in no way fits with the Hallmark moment as written. This ending was so wrong on so many counts that it ruined an otherwise excellent read. Still, this book is better then most offerings out there. This author knows how to write a good story and I look forward to reading more from David Ellis.

4 out of 5 stars Different - in a good way.......2007-01-15

If you're seeking a legal thriller that's not the same old standard plot line and cliched characters - this is it. An enjoyable read, as good as any Grisham.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good!.......2006-11-13

This is a different kind of thriller that starts out fast, slows greatly in the middle, then picks up to a huge end. Marty is a person who seems to like to hang out on the outside of Rachel Rheinhart's house and look in the window. One night while doing this he witnesses Rachel's husband striking her and then tearing at her clothes. This causes him to break into the house, struggle with the husband and apparently kill him with a gun, then drag out his body and dispose of it and the gun.

What enfolds is that Marty apparently was involved with Rachel and was coming to her defense. He has no idea what she will tell the police and for a few weeks they think that the husband was kidnapped and then realize that the husband was probably murdered (since there is no ransom demand and they had found a lot of the husband's blood at the crime scene).

During this time, Marty sets up an alibi that puts him at work during the murder. Eventually the police suspect Marty of the murder and arrest him when he appears to have confessed to it. What follows if Marty's trial while a lot of apparent shady things seem to be happening with Marty and a special investigator he has hired.

The book is full of twists and turns throughout and you are never quite sure what happened until the very last page and even then there are some serious open questions. I liked the book a lot and would have given it five stars had not some of the explanations given not seemed so unbelievable.

5 out of 5 stars Unique Legal Thriller.......2006-06-19

Written from the perspective of the accused, Marty Kalish, this story grabs you from the first page and doesn't let go. The attorney, Paul Riley, is a crackerjack, and the courtroom scenes are as authentic as they come. You can feel the suspense in the pit of your stomach, as the accused fights for an acquittal but comtemplates the very possible consequences of his actions - a term of life behind bars at best, a lethal injection at worst.

This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A596724. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: This thesis analyzes the effect of quantitative and qualitative factors used in the admissions process at the U.S. Naval Academy in determining the performance of candidates admitted. In determining student performance, graduation, Order of Merit (OOM), cumulative academic Quality Point Ratio (QPR), cumulative military QPR, and striper selection are used as performance outcome measures. The data is from Naval Academy graduation year groups 1995 through 2001. The analysis separates the Naval Academy's Whole Person Multiple into quantitative and qualitative inputs. The Candidate Multiple (CM) is the quantitative input to the admissions process derived from a statistics-based scoring model anchored in proven high school performance measures such as the SAT and high school GPA. The Recommendations of the Admissions Board (RAB) are the qualitative input, which awards points for subjective traits not captured in the CM or that are from various other subjective measures, such as student interviews and essays. This research highlights the properties of the two admissions factors and their estimated impact on student performance. The results show that student performance increased as CM and RAB increased, revealing the importance of a combined quantitative and qualitative admissions process, and emphasizing qualitative input as the value added factor that provides an increased predictability of student success. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: This thesis attempts to answer the following research questions: (1) Does participation or perseverance in non-athletic extra-curricular activities in high school (defined as attaining membership or persisting in the same activities throughout high school) result in better leadership performance at the Naval Academy? (2) Can a measure be devised to predict leadership performance at the U.S. Naval Academy based on demonstrated participation and perseverance in high school non-athletic extra-curricular activities? To analyze these questions, a quantitative analysis of the Naval Academy classes of 1994 through 1998 is undertaken to determine if there is a significant relationship between perseverance in extra-curricular activities in high school and leadership ascent at the Naval Academy.

This includes all elements of support including configuration management and maintenance. The customer purchases this service on a subscription basis. The findings show that ASPs have the potential to be a viable and financially stable solution in meeting the Navy's and the federal government's need of reduce the complexity and cost of delivering software applications. However, a cost and benefit analysis should be performed to verify the final costs prior to any implementation. Further, the enabling thin client and server-based computing technologies all show they can provide benefits for an organization interested in centrally managing and maintaining applications.

The Storming Media report number is A618424. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: With a FY 2004 budget of $114 billion, there is no question that the Department of the Navy is involved in big business. If compared to the sales revenues of the Fortune 500, the Navy would rank sixth. After having weathered a prolonged drawdown through the 1990's, Naval leadership must recapitalize its aging legacy systems. The plan to accomplish this task is the Sea Enterprise component of the Navy's Sea Power 21 strategy. In order to reach these goals, the Chief of Naval Operations needs a cadre of business-savvy line officers who can properly allocate scarce resources. The core of this group is composed of line officers who hold the Financial Management (FM) subspecialty designator. This thesis applies a managerial control system approach to the process of filling Financial Management billets with properly qualified FM line officers. Complex and miltifaceted, the process contains three distinct components: promotion, assignment and education. After examining levers of control that can be accessed by the FM community manager, this thesis identifies system weaknesses. Recommendations to solve the weaknesses include improved control and tailored incentives. The combination of control and incentives could improve the qualification rate of the Navy's FM officer positions and, ultimately, allow the Navy to meet its Sea Enterprise goals.

Data were taken from the 1992 DoD Survey officer and Enlisted Personnel and their Spouses and were matched with the 1996 Active Duty Military Master File by the Defense Manpower Data Center. The sample was restricted to Navy URL officers in pay grades 01-03, within their minimum service requirement. The data were divided into three sets: single male officers, married male officers, and female officers. A conceptual model was developed which grouped explanatory variables of career intentions into three broad categories: personal, internal work related, and external work related. A multivariate logistic model was estimated for each data set to determine the relative importance of these variables on an individual's intent to make the Navy a career. Results indicated that the factors influencing career intentions differ between male and female officers and married and single officers.

                    1 out of 5 stars Boring.......2007-01-01

This books along with the latter talent books are so unrealistic as to be boring. The first talent books, Pegasus in Flight and Pegasus in Space were interesting and fun because we were reading about real characters. They had Talent, but they were still real people. The characters in the latter talent books are nothing less than gods, with an almost all-powerful Talent, and seemingly little or no personal problems or limitations (which makes th books dull). Also, what the books really portray, without actually saying it is basically a Talent autocracy. Non talented are inferior and unimportant, and the talented rule over everyone else with their powers. This reminds me of Star Trek, where everyone is law abiding, and the authority of the Federation is unquestioned. So what happens to those who question the authority of the Federation? They are automatically outlaws. Its really quite totalitarian.
Anyway, this book is boring and not worth the money.

                    4 out of 5 stars Great Read!.......2006-08-24

Really enjoy the story, with each new generation of primes the story is extended and made more interesting.

3 out of 5 stars Lyons too Proud.............2003-12-03

I listened to the audio version of Lyon's Pride, and enjoyed it, with a few caveats. One: there was a distinct lack of plot, and two: very little actually happened. Sure, we got a peek into the perfect world of Damia and her Children, but the plot seemed to meander...And the hive 'menace' was not really much of a menace at all.

Pet peeves: Personally, I found the parents (and grandparents) meddling and matchmaking to be annoying. I also thought the gifts of the t-1's and how they manipulated the emotions of the lesser talented to be manipulative, and downright scary. Who says the t-1's have a right to mess with people's emotions? It was quite intrusive of Zara, to mess with the mind of Kincaid while he was sleeping, even if her intentions were good. Such powers can quickly become abusive and Damia's children seem to have no boundaries, despite their motivations.

Also, I liked the character of Kincaid, but nothing was really resolved with him. We never really found out the details about what happened to him on the deep space mission, and the character seems to be dropped halfway through the book. Other romances seemed flat to me. Roger's romance with his cousin Asia was tepid. Asia was just too timid, and Roger too self confidant. Plus there was the cousin thing...Errr, sorry, Anne, that didn't work for me.

Overall, despite these peeves, I liked Lyon's pride. It just didn't go anywhere; and the assumptions and liberties the 'talented' made towards those with lesser gifts were supercilious and grating.

4 out of 5 stars A good read worth the time........2003-03-26

What makes this book worth reading is the that we are able to follow the lives of Damia's children as well as the rest of the extended family. For me that is always what made this series worth reading was the family's dedication to each other in-spite of their egos and talents. This 4th book in a series of 5 Lyon's Pride by Anne McCaffrey is set in the universe we have come to expect of her Talents series. The story continues on with Humanity and it's Allies continued fight against the hivers. There are several subplots that are set up or carried along for conclusion in the 5th book. But it is worth the read if you like this series, and McCaffrey in general.

                    4 out of 5 stars An exciting, character-driven tale........2003-03-23

"The formidable Lyon's Pride," as a character in the next (and final) book of the Talent series calls them, are the children of T-1 Damia Gwynn-Raven and T-2 Afra Lyon; and that "T" rating is a measure of the Talented one's power. Telepathy and telekinesis keep Human and Mrdini commerce operating by moving travelers and cargoes instantaneously across vast reaches of space. Those same Talents enable the two allied species to battle successfully against a third: the implacable Hivers, who covet the same kind of real estate as do Humans and Mrdini.

All eight of Damia and Afra's children have Talent ratings of T-1. All are destined, as adults, to be known as Primes. Some, like eldest daughter Laria, will operate commercial transfer towers - a prestigious and powerful position, but one that can take a young Prime far away from home. Some, like sons Thian and Rojer, will carve out new roles for Talents in service aboard naval vessels. Second daughter Zara's strongly empathic Talent fits her for the career of healer - after it enables her to do what no one else can manage, by communicating (on however rudimentary a level) with a captured Hiver queen. The Lyon's Pride is, indeed, formidable. Its four eldest are reaching adulthood just in time to play key roles, as the Human-Mrdini alliance begins to solve the Hiver threat that first loomed when their grandparents were young.

An exciting, character-driven tale, which only occasionally bogs itself down with shipboard protocols and politics. If you can get past those pacing problems, you'll be glad you did; because "The Tower and the Hive," the next volume in the Talent series, provides a worthy conclusion to the long-running Gwynn-Raven saga.

3 out of 5 stars A BRIDGE BETWEEN TWO CULTURES.......2000-02-28

Book Three of the Lyon Saga is a gentle sequel with less action/adventure than the previous books, but more personal drama and internal turmoil, as Jess matures into a woman at the tender age of 17. She and her Indian fiancee are eager to start their life as a married couple, yet Jess' emotions are torn as her ailing father is sinking fast. A small group of the orignal colonists is determined to branch off and seek rumored English settlers farther south on the mainland. Jess, of course, volunteers as one of the guides.

This book chronicles her marriage and maternity; we witness a newcomer to the mixed community and a 2nd interracial marraige. The animal population increases and Jess amazes even her stern father-in-law by trying to raise 3 wolf cubs. This book shares her introspective musings on life, death, motherhood, and living at peace with nature--human and animal. A subtle plea for human understanding in these times of racial tension.

Stainer presents a peaceful version of the fate of some of the survivors of the Lost Colony of Roanoak. As if to compensate for the decrease of violence in the first two books, she closes PRIDE with a deliberate cliff hanger--teasing us to read on! Those traditional enemies of England, Spanish sailors and pirates, scour the Virginia coastal islands for English prey. But something good comes ashore all the same. Bravo for the way Stainer blends spiritual and Christian values as an underlying theme of the brotherhood of man and the will to survive.

5 out of 5 stars What happened to Eleanor Dare?.......1999-08-14

This third book in the Lyon Saga series tells what may have happened to Eleanor Dare and her baby Virginia. They headed inland in search of other colonists. An exciting story full of danger at every turn. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Painless learning about the Roanoke Colony!.......1999-03-29

The hardships the Roanoke colonists faced are depicted vividly in... the historical fiction series. The total effect of the Lyon Saga is a satisfactory one.

                    5 out of 5 stars A wonderful,and historical childrens book!.......1998-11-24

I think the Lyons Pride is the best book yet.Right now I'am on the 16th chapter in the Lyons Pride, since the begining of the book I think I personally think that it is truely romantic! All the characters are heart warming, especilly Jess and sweet Elenor. I can't wait until your other books come out. My cousin, Elizabeth read your books to, she finished two of your books in one day!

4 out of 5 stars lots of action romance and adventure........1998-09-18

I think this was a great book. It told things simply and was easy to understand. I loved all the romance and adventure. In fact the only thing I didn't like was the ending. I couldn't believe you would just end it like that. It really was unfair. I think books should end on a HAPPY expectant note, not a ANXIOUS expectant note.

1838. Having long had a wish to illustrate certain periods of the French history, so in the selection of the date in which the scenes of this play are laid, I saw that the era of the Republic was that in which the incidents were rendered most probable.
