Book Description

In a shadow world of secrets, lies, and hidden agendas, Detective Sergeant Rebecca Frye and her lover, Dr. Catherine Rawlings, join forces once again in the elusive search for justice.

Rebecca is aided in her struggle to uncover a pornography ring and expose its connections to a traitor within the police department by a rag-tag team of dedicated cops and civilians: JT Sloan, a cybersleuth committed to avenging her lover's devastating injury, who walks the fine line between justice and revenge; Dellon Mitchell, a young police officer who discovers an unforeseen talent for undercover work; and Sandy, a prostitute who develops an unexpected passion for cops. Ultimately, this secret investigation may risk not just their careers, but may cost one their life.

A police procedural with a strong ensemble cast of lovers, partners, and friends that emphasizes the changing and challenging relationships between the characters as much as the action/intrigue. This series satisfies lovers of both nonstop action as well as heart-stopping romance.

Another hit by Radclyffe. This series needs to be made into a movie. I would certainly be in line to see it!

5 out of 5 stars Justice Series Prevails.......2006-07-31

Det. Sgt. Frye and Dr. Rawling are joined by cyber gurus Sloan & Jason/Jasmin plus their significant others Michael & Sarah from the Trust Series. Officer Dell Mitchell joins the team.

Will they find the porn ring? Who killed Frye's partner, Jeff.

You know this is gonna be hot just from the cast of characters. This just sizzles.

5 out of 5 stars Another Excellent Entry in the Justice Series.......2006-04-25

This outing in the series is less about Detective Sergeant Rebecca Frye and Dr. Catherine Rawlings and more about the minor characters who were introduced in previous outings. In this book, Rebecca is still trying to find the person who ordered the killing of her partner, Jeff Cruz, and another cop, who may be the same bad guy who ordered the hit on her friend JT Sloan (the hitman mistook Sloan's lover Michael for Sloan and nearly killed the wrong woman and Sloan wants revenge), and who may be the head of a porn ring plagueing Philadelphia. She has an unofficial official team working away from police headquarters trying to track down the perps. And a strange team it is - but they all work well together and make headway.

There is less intensity in the romance department - although Radclyffe does not ignore the romance - it doesn't take center stage as it did in the first book of the series. This book is more of police procedural - good old fashioned mystery - and an excellent one at that.

There are enough twists and turns in this book to satisfy any mystery fan, and the author, like any good mystery writer, doesn't keep the clues from the reader. But, in the end, the villain that Rebecca's team is searching for eludes them still.

This is an excellent entry in an equally excellent series by an excellent writer (can you tell I'm a big fan of this series?).

    Book Description

The press called Martin's actions a "crime spree." Already convicted of armed robbery, Martin was facing the death penalty. In less than two weeks the jury would decide his fate. Terrified that his son would be sentenced to die, Phillip did the only thing he felt he could do: in an act of faith and desperation in his garage with the car exhaust running, Phillip made the consummate sacrifice to spare his son the ultimate punishment. Ironically, his suicide presented Martin's with another chance at life; the jury, moved by Martin's loss, spared his life. Phillip's story-like those of the other parents, siblings, children, and cousins chronicled in this book-vividly illustrates the precarious position family members of capital offenders occupy in the criminal justice system. At once outsiders and victims, they live in the shadow of death, crushed by trauma, grief, and helplessness. In this penetrating account of guilt and innocence, shame and triumph, devastating loss and ultimate redemption, the voices of these family members add a new dimension to debates about capital punishment and how communities can prevent and address crime. Restorative justice theory, which views violent crime as an extreme violation of relationships; searches for ways to hold offenders accountable; and meets the needs of victims and communities torn apart by the crime, organizes these narratives and integrates offenders' families into the process of transforming conflict and promoting justice and healing for all. What emerges from hundreds of hours' worth of in-depth interviews with family members of offenders and victims, legal teams, and leaders in the abolition and restorative justice movements is a vision of justice strongly rooted in the social fabric of communities. Showing that forgiveness and recovery are possible in the wake of even the most heinous crimes, while holding victims' stories sacred, this eye-opening book bridges the pain of living in the shadow of death with the possibility of a reparative form of justice. Anyone working with victims, offenders, and their families-from lawyers and social workers to mediators and activists-will find this riveting work indispensable to their efforts.

5 out of 5 stars This is a superb book.......2007-02-01

The narrative style of this book, along with the balance of stories, research and analysis, makes for easy, informative and compelling reading. The book addresses a long ignored part of the impact of the death penalty: the families of those charged, convicted and executed. For anyone interested in the death penalty, restorative justice or simply in the lives of many of the worst off in our society, this book offers unique and essential information and insight about the effects executions have on those involved.

      Book Description

Anne Griffiths originally went to Botswana to establish a university course in family law. But independent fieldwork in Botswana convinced her of the central role of the traditional customary legal system that stands alongside the colonial common law of courts and magistrates she was examining in her course. In the first comparative work on these two systems, Griffiths shows how the structure of both legal institutions is based on power and gender relations that heavily favor males.

Griffiths's analysis is based on careful observation of how people actually experience the law as well as the more standard tools of statutes and cases familiar to Western legal scholars. She explains how women's access to law is determined by social relations over which they have little control. In this powerful feminist critique of law and anthropology, Griffiths shows how law and custom are inseparable for Kwena women. Both colonial common law and customary law pose comparable and constant challenges to Kwena women's attempts to improve their positions in society.

4 out of 5 stars A Worthy Selection by the ABA Criminal Justice Section.......2005-08-25

Although I get the impression that the ABA choose this book for the general reader in order to cast some illumination on the criminal justice system, as a practicing prosecutor who enjoys this genre but finds little time to read it, I enjoyed this story very much and recommend it to the guild of prosecutors, especially assistant district attorneys. It is more in the style of Turow rather than Grisham, it is relatively short for the busy reader, and it treats the drug trial accurately, for I myself have tried drug possession cases and have dealt with the issue of knowing possession before a jury. I am going to recommend it to all my fellow prosecutors in my office.

      5 out of 5 stars Legal treat.......2004-12-05

The Shadow of Justice is a tantalizing beginning for a new author. One can hardly wait to turn the pages to find out what happens next to Judge Clark and his cohorts in the Miami legal scene. The interspersing of cultural nuances that are so mandatory to the flavor of the city only whet one's appetite for the story to follow. Full of surprises, this book had me interested from the beginning to the end. Can't wait for the next book.

5 out of 5 stars Uncertainty and ambiguity, clearly evoked.......2004-11-16

A terrific novel. The main characters - the Miami trial judge who writes the first person narrative, a criminal defense lawyer whose moral ambiguity conflicts with his lawyerly competence and obligations, and a police officer (who, though dead as the novel begins, is brought to life through the recollections of the judge and attorney) - are as well crafted as the apparently simple plot, which leads to a complex moral dilemma and an unexpected, but understandable outcome. Equally well depicted are the tension between what law requires and justice demands, the scruffy not-quite-dignity of Miami's trial courts, and the course of a brief, "routine" drug possession trial, the intersection where the book's characters and themes collide. The book's lawyer-author clears away the resulting wreckage with skill and insight, while leading the reader to ponder what he would have done, had he been in the place of each of the three main characters as they chose the paths that the book has them follow.

      5 out of 5 stars A Rare Treat.......2004-10-29

Hirsch has written a wonderful legal thriller. In The Shadow of Justice, a Miami judge must confront the incomprehensible, violent crime of one dear friend and the awful corruption of another. The intelligent narrative works as an exceptionally fast-paced suspense novel and an excellent primer on criminal law. It's not often one gets an inside look into the seamy side of Miami from such a literate storyteller, one who quotes Tennyson and Proverbs with equal finesse. A terrific read!

3 out of 5 stars Engrossing, but not what I'd expected.......2007-07-26

Mr. Klaber's book is well-written, engrossing, and thought-provoking. At its core, however, it is less about what the common reader thinks of as the "case" of the RFK murder than it is centered strongly on the legal proceedings themselves. He brings out tantalizing bits of evidence, but does not follow any of them to their end points. In the end, while being more fully aware of the possibility of Sirhan's innocence, the reader has little to go on in terms of discovering the real perpetrator(s) or the second gunman.

        5 out of 5 stars A returning student's review.......2002-12-10

This book was extremely enlightening and engrossing. It reveals many startling details about an assassination that in the public's mind is an open and shut case. This book will make you re-examine what you think you know about the murder of Robert F. Kennedy. It is a fascinating and disturbing look into the mishandling of the investigation as well as the trial of Sirhan Sirhan.

5 out of 5 stars Surely Surly Sirhan.......2001-09-08

Klaber stands alone in his remarkable attention to detail and his insightful intuition as he dissects Sirhan, the assassination and all the people and events surrounding it. Investigative journalism at its finest; with no sides taken, no leaf unturned/unflipped/unanalyzed and certainly no minds unchallenged.

Klaber's wired-in work makes all the others' works putter off into nattering nabobs of nonsensical noise as he delicately delves into this June 4, 1968 seminal tragedy. Klaber kooks the krime and katers to only the most diskriminating kats.

        What's Klaber writing about now?

        5 out of 5 stars A Must Read.......2000-05-05

I literally tore through this book. I couldn't put it down. Fascinating and frustrating with regards to the failure of the justice system.

5 out of 5 stars READ THIS BOOK. YOU'LL LOVE IT!.......1999-04-21

I thought this book was a great read. Not only was the book educational, it was also a very entertaining read. I dont think I have ever read such an entertaining non-fiction book in my life. The book realy tells it how it is. It lets you know the facts about how crooked our justice system is, and how powerful our government is. I would like to say "Thank you" to Mr. Klaber for writing such an enlightening book. I would now, after reading this book, rate Klaber up there with the other great writers of our time. This book is a must read, five star acomplishment, and possibly one of the best books I have ever read.

            Book Description

Today 's wars leave a crippling legacy of deprivation and suffering, of physical and structural injustice, long after they submit to peaceful resolution. Survivors of war must find ways to live with the stultifying injustices littering their past and haunting their present - acts of discrimination and violence committed before, during and even after conflict.Confronting the vexed challenge of re-marrying peace with justice out of the morass of war 's injustices is the complex but imperative task facing post-conflict societies and the international community today.Using current examples from conflicts around the world, ranging from Africa and Asia to Latin America and Eastern Europe, it argues for a holistic and integrated approach to justice after conflict. It proposes that we must address all three dimensions of injustice embedded in conflict - symptom, consequence and cause, and that subsequently we must rebuild all three dimensions of justice - legal, rectificatory and distributive, in the aftermath. This timely book explores the difficulties and dilemmas confronted on the ground in restoring these, and concludes with pragmatic recommendations for dealing with such challenges of rebuilding peace with justice after contemporary conflicts. This well-argued book will prove a valuable resource for students and professionals in the fields of peacebuilding, justice theory, international relations and politics.

              Book Description

Trials are the stuff of news. That rare moment when justice, or a reasonable facsimile, is meted out. And what offers up more high drama, or melodrama, than a highly publicized trial? Most news events live short life spans. They happen; they are reported; they are quickly forgotten. As Chiasson and his contributors make clear, a trial often is a lingering, living thing that builds in tension. It is, every once in a long while, a modern Shakespearean drama with a twist: The audience becomes members of the cast because, every once in a long while, society finds itself the defendant. Trials can have lasting importance beyond how the public perceives them. A trial can have long-reaching significance if it changes the way people think, or how institutions function, or shapes public opinion. Ten such American trials covering a span of 307 years are covered here. In each, the sociological underpinnings of events often has greater significance than either the crime or the trial. The ten trials included are the Salem witch trials, the Amistad trial, the Sioux Indian Uprising trials, the Ed Johnson/Sheriff Shipp trial, the "Big Bill" Haywood trial, the Ossian Sweet trial, the Clay Shaw trial, the Manuel Noriega trial, and the Matthew Shepard trial. While the book is about ten crimes, the subsequent trials, and the media coverage of each, it is also a book about witchcraft, about religion, slavery, and radicalism. It paints portraits of a racist America, a capitalistic America, an anarchist America. It relates compelling tales of compassion, greed, stupidity, and hate beginning in 17th-century colonial times and ending in present-day America. In many ways, it is the story of America.

              Book Description

A powerful new voice in fantasy fiction, the acclaimed author of Fires of the Faithful continues her enthralling epic of persecution and war, passion and triumph, and of the brave young woman who must succeed in...

              Turning the Storm

She is called musician, rebel, soldier, legend. After months of leading an uprising against the treacherous religious order of the Fedeli and the ruling Circle of Mages, young Eliana is known throughout the land. Striking from the blighted wastelands, her army of reformers has grown in number--adding liberated slaves to its ranks. Driven by their beliefs in the Old Way, Eliana and the soldiers of the Lupi stand on faith alone.

But faith won’t save the Lupi from traitors in their midst--or from the magical fires of the mages. Seeing her soldiers reduced to ashes around her, Eliana takes a desperate gamble: she steps down from command. Then, armed with stolen orders to attend one of the musical ensembles within the Imperial enclave, she disguises herself as a boy, takes up her violin, and heads straight into enemy territory. And now the girl-turned-general adds another title to her rank: spy.

2 out of 5 stars No new ground plowed here.......2003-04-29

Mediocre writing, recycled plot. Told in the first person, a difficult voice that this author has not mastered.

              4 out of 5 stars A good read 3 and a half stars.......2003-03-27

Some of the other reviewers explained how this book differed from the first in the writing style. Overall the book was good but it seemed rushed and their was a twisted ending that left probably the largest dissapointment. It put in a protaganist that didn't need to be there to make a simple plot more intriguing. Instead it rushed over interesting character devolopment, into more of a battlefield who's who.
I enjoyed the books, but they overall are less then steller.

              2 out of 5 stars I Wish..........2003-02-23

I hoped that this second book would build on the first, but it seems more hastily written. The weaknesses of the first--the male protagonists sounding all alike; choppiness of plot; characters talking like nineties people interspersed with Renaissance religious talk--are emphasized. Though there was plenty of action, I didn't feel as a reader that I experienced it. The style was more journalistic than previous. I found, despite the bloodshed and pain, that my attention wandered, especially as it seemed that no one but the bad guys had any clear motivation for what they were doing.

I did like Eliana's strength, and her liking women is a breath of fresh air after far too many books by women authors in which cute men fall for other cute men and gush like thirteen year old girls. The use of Italy and Italian is a good change after far too much repasteurized Celtishness.

In short, I think this author shows plenty of talent, but needs to take time to smooth the plotting and prose. I will look for a third book, but I will probably read a chapter or two before buying.

4 out of 5 stars A great improvement over the first volume in the series.......2003-02-06

In Turning the Storm, Naomi Kritzer has hit her stride. The sudden change of tone that marred the first book, Fires of the Faithful, is absent here. The book reads very consistently. Elianna is also a more believable character in this volume - her inept (but successful, largely due to chance (criticisms regarding deus ex machina become appropriate here)) approach to spying is much more believable than her suddenly discovered prowess as a warrior was in the previous volume. Character development is even and believable - one can easily imagine that a person would respond to the other characters in the way Elianna does. Like the first book, it is written in the first person, so the reader gets a good peek inside the protagonists head.

The setting, based apparently on southern Europe of the Renaissance period is believable, if not compelling. The characters on the other hand, seem to think very much like modern Westerners, so they do not fit into the environment as well as they could.

Some readers may be put off by the culmination of Elianna's incipient lesbianism (thankfully, it is not graphically depicted). A bigger problem, is Elianna's motivation. Unlike many of the classic fantasy books, where the reader can feel the urgency and necessity of the hero's cause, Elianna seems mostly driven by a need for revenge. While she has a concern to free the people who follow her, it becomes clear that those who she has allied herself to are willing to replace to preserve the status quo as long as they become the ones in charge.

Had it been a choice, I would have given it 3.5 stars. I think the backstory concerning Gaius and the discovery of magery and the initial conflict between the Old Way and the new religion represented by the Fedeli might make a much more involving read. That said, this is still a good paperback novel for reading on an airplane or when you have nothing else to do on a wet afternoon.

3 out of 5 stars Pleasant Sequel, Good Read.......2003-02-04

As a concluding sequel to "Fires of the Faithful" "Turning of the Storm" does a fairly good job of delivering a decent end to an average story. At least I am assuming this is the conclusion, if it is not then it is one of the better ended middle volumes, if it is then it still has a reasonable good end, something I believe is very important. This one won't leave you hanging with a big TO BE CONTINUED. The ending does seems somewhat forced and compressed but it's better than a lot I've read in the past couple of years.

As I mentioned the story is average, not bad, not great. It is a fairly quick read, the time spent quite enjoyably. Reading of "Fires of the Faithful" is a prerequisite if you intend to understand the plot or the characters.

Some girl on girl romance inferred, never consummated. It does not really fit the bill as a romance but is tame enough to be deemed young adult literature.

Do I recommend it? Sure if you want a decent story to read during some down time. Go for it. Don't expect too much just enjoy.

3 out of 5 stars An important part of the Witch World saga.......2005-05-30

"Storms of Victory" is somewhere near the 20th book in Norton's popular Witch World series. It's also the first installment of the "Turning" trilogy, followed by "Flight of Vengeance" and "On Wings of Magic." As such, it sets the stage for a larger story, but "Storms of Victory" can be read alone. The book contains two separate novellas that come to a satisfactory conclusion by the end of this first volume.

I recommend "Storms of Victory" to any Witch World fan. If you're new to Witch World, this is not a bad place to dive in, but parts of it would be easier to understand if you've read previous books in the series.

              ...(VERY MINOR PLOT SPOILERS)...

The first tale, "Port of Dead Ships," was written by Andre Norton. A young Sulcar woman sets sail with Simon Tregarth, Jaelithe, and several other familiar Witch World characters to find out why so many ships have been found floating aimlessly, their crews mysteriously vanished. The expedition encounters assorted creepy creatures along the way, and finally an ancient evil that threatens to destroy them.

The second story, "Seakeep," was written by P.M. Griffin. Una has recently inherited the rule of a small territory named Seakeep. Suspecting that a neighboring ruler might be planning an invasion, Una hires a band of mercenaries called Falconers to protect her holdings. Unfortunately, the Falconers despise women. Una and the leader of the mercenaries struggle to work out their differences while identifying the pirates who have been wrecking ships along Seakeep's wild coastline.

Both books are decent fantasy stories with a strong sense of adventure and no profanity or scenes that might be inappropriate for younger readers. I rate them both as average, because although they tell an important part of the Witch World saga, neither of them is particularly compelling. This is not one of Norton's strongest stories. I found Griffin's book more intriguing, and her narrative style is much easier to read, but the story was somewhat simplistic and predictable.

              5 out of 5 stars A real page turner..........1998-03-09

This is a good book which helps to "flesh out" the period of time of the turning of WW. A must for every WW fan, it is a great read and wonderful addition to your library. I have read my copy of the turning trilogy several times.

                Book Description

God Plants the Dream... The Seed Breaks Open with Faith My deepest desire in writing this book has been that God will be glorified and exalted through anyone touched by my sharing of how His Word has blessed and shaped my own life's experiences. I have shared my favorite, relevant scriptures, to show how it was done without God, how it works with God, and how it works for God. For me, there is no better way than to be His disciple. The rainbow theme was inspired by Bible references in Genesis 9:8-17, with the story of Noah and the flood, and Revelation 4:3, which describe the rainbow as a gift of God and the seal of His covenant with mankind, encircling the very throne of God. I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth . Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all life. Genesis 9:12 A storm, the color of black, is never part of a colorful rainbow, which expresses the very nature and glorious presence of God. The Rainbow Bible describes the significance of the colors: "Purple assigned to God because it is a color of royalty; Blue assigned to Salvation because it has a heavenly or eternal connotation; Silver assigned to History because it signifies age or experience." I've experienced many storms in my life, the dark and cold times when there is so little light. Many times I wondered when my dark trial would be over, and the thought of the rainbow helped me make it through. We need to know there is always light, and oftentimes a radiant rainbow, after the storm. For over 17 years, it has been my heart's dream to create this book, even though I am unqualified and lack all the good skills in reading, writing and spelling that an author would seem to need. There is a saying that goes, "We know how many seeds are in an apple, but we never know how many apples are in a seed." God always reaches out His hand for the ones that are weak in many areas, and so, this book has come forth as a miracle from His grace, through the support and skill of others. He found him in a desert land, and in the waste howling wilderness; He led him about, He instructed him, He kept him as the apple of His eye. Deuteronomy 32: 10 KJV My father died when I was three years old, and my mother died when I was eleven years old. I became orphaned and a ward of the court. I suffered greatly from extreme loneliness and lack of love . yet, with so much of life's burdens forced upon me, the unconditional love of God gave me the hope and courage to come through it all . and even helped me to become a successful real estate broker! I've had a full life of 56 years, and I've written only glimpses of it here. There is so much more I could share. It was very difficult to choose the most important pieces, as each experience is so precious. We are all extremely unique and, at the same time, one of a kind and can benefit from each other's life lessons. That is my intention, and I send this book into your hearts with tremendous love and respect for everyone that reads it. These things I command; that you love one another. John 15:17 Please know that no matter how dark it is for you today, there are always rainbows that emerge from the storms. I pray that this book will be inspiring to all who have gone through or who are going through their own personal storms. I pray that God guides and strengthens you, and that the thoughts I've shared will give you great hope and much, much courage to go out there and do the impossible -- not because you can do it -- because God can. God bless you. May you have a tremendous miracle life that is so overflowing with blessings of unconditional love you can hardly grasp it all! Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart. Psalms 37:4

Ms. Roman shares her personal journey and inspires others. She discusses some of her obstacles and how she overcame them. This is a great Bible-based book which shows that if Ms. Roman can overcome obstacles with God's help to be successful, anyone can do it!
