Tiny!.......2007-04-21
Just a warning that this edition of Jazz is quite small. It's about the size of a large post card. In addition, the shape of the book- just like the picture, duhh- forces most of the images inside to be even tinier. A cute book, but definitely not a great way to enjoy Matisse's fine work.
A Top Candidate as the Finest 20th Century Art Book!.......2006-02-26
Many artists run out of steam before their life ends. Their final work either wanders off in unpromising directions or maunders in repetition of themes already better explored earlier.
Matisse was a happy exception. His work continued to be refined and improved. Jazz is arguably his best work and one of the few affordable ways for each of us to view outstanding art in the format for which it was designed.
Where most illustrated books (including other books illustrated by Matisse) accompany a text by a poet or an author, Jazz is based on a text by Matisse. The text, however, is there to create a visual context for the cut-outs. Matisse employed a delightful calligraphy in his own hand to capture his thoughts about how to be an artist. Many artists are very poorly equipped to explain their own work and approaches to creating that work. Matisse once again proves himself to be a giant by producing a text that's as delightful as the brilliant images.
The text is, of course, in French, but a simple English translation precedes the displayed material.
Riva Castleman opens the book with a fine history of the work inception and execution.
Beyond there, you will delight in familiar images. Many of the plates from this book have become cultural icons such as Icarus, Clown, Circus, Horse and Heart. You will doubtless also find new favorites among the various Lagoons and circus-themed cut-outs.
What, you ask, is a cut-out? Matisse was too ill to get out of bed to paint. Instead, he took brightly color paper and cut out images that resemble what a precocious child might do. Then, these images were carefully pinned over other colored sheets on a wall and equally carefully moved in response to Matisse's directions by his patient assistant.
The work captures a freeness, freshness and frolicsome nature that will make you feel young again. They are a remarkable accomplishment for any artist. They present an unbelievable achievement by someone literally warming their death bed.
Even if you don't like modern art, you'll like Jazz. Get the beat!
Possibly the most beautiful book of the 20th Century.......1998-07-29
Like the style of music for which it is named, Henri Matisse's "Jazz" moves in unexpected rhythms. His first major project in the unique cut-out medium, the book was originally published in a very limited edition. This 1985 edition brings a true work of art to a mass public. "Jazz" is a book all book lovers should own, because it forces you to become more aware of the sheer visual pleasure provided by reading. Matisse's calligraphic text can be appreciated for its beauty by those who do not read French (a translation of the text is provided at the front of the edition), and its cool black-and-white austerity rests the eye from the dazzle provided by the amazing plates. Matisse's colors are so bright they burn themselves onto your retina! Do not resist them, for they will transport you into a world where pure forms float in a limitless space, a world simultaneously serene and vivid.

Book Description
Henri Matisse created a series of stunning paper cutouts, arranged them into compositions, and added a text in his own handwriting to produce a unique work of art that has been referred to as "the visual counterpart of jazz music".
This volume reproduces the complete composition of Jazz, as originally published in 1947. The accompanying text retraces the fascinating story of the work's background, the significance of the colors and images, and looks at the importance of Matisse's handwritten pages as a counterpoint to the cut-outs.

Good, but could have been better........2004-01-08
First, the good news. The book itself is beautifully printed. Pages are heavy stock - I've seen flimsier business cards. Color is rich, and only one page had any registration problem that I could see. This is more than just a monograph about the artist, it reproduces a book by the artist (and I'm grateful for the English translation). I have a passion for primary sources - Matisse isn't among my favorite artists, but I'll listen when an undeniable master speaks.
Unfortunately, two major features of the book interfere with my full enjoyment of it. First, the original Jazz interleaved images with text in Matisse's own hand. A little of the hand-written text has been reproduced, but certainly not all of it. The original relationship of text and image has been lost. Second, and related, is that the translation appears in the back of the book. It's only a minor nuisance to flip back and forth between the book's real content and back matter. I had real problems, though, with the fact that the back matter gives the whole of Matisse's text, but the main content does not. The translated part gives no indication of what it provides that the reproduction doesn't, so it was a "Where's Waldo" exercise, trying to resynchronize my reading with viewing of the images. Perhaps economic decisions about printing forced the omissions. I can still wish that different tradeoffs had been used in the choice, or that the book's organization could have compensated better for the losses.
A final point, and a relatively minor one, is that Matisse provided a visual index or table of contents, showing a thumbnail sketch of each work in the book. I was fascinated by Matisse's own view of what mattered in each composition. The way it's reproduced looks a bit like a ransom note, however. Each annotation has been cut out into its own little box and laid out according to the book designer's idea of proper organization. Perhaps there is good reason for this; maybe the thumbnails would have been illegibly small if the page were reproduced to scale. Still, I would have liked to see the original page's organization, even if the reproduction also showed the sketches at readable size.
Despite the book's flaws, it seems to be an adequate presentation of a coherent body of compositions. Warts and all, I looking forward to enjoying the book over and over.

Cut and wear.......2007-09-21
Nicely illustrated, BUT you probably won't make many of these. They are primarily for long-waisted, very young, very thin women who are showing more skin than most women should. Love handles and over-hanging bellies, girls, are just so NOT sexy. Besides, is sexy all we have to say about why someone should give us a second look?
snippers beware.......2007-09-19
The designs in this book certainly are creative and unique enough to make you think twice about trashing your vintage tees - but most of these projects are terribly impractical. There are no patterns, no mention of measurements(such as what size shirt will be needed to pull off the design or what size the shirt will end up being) and the instructions are vague. The entire book is illusrated, which suggests that the shirts may not work on 'real bodies' or that the results are not appealing enough to photograph. Without the use of elastics or zippers, I have to wonder how some of these shirts stay where they are supposed to. However, my biggest warning to potential readers and crafters is this: unraveling! Despite the eco-conscious message the book gives about recycling clothing, many of these designs are not built to last. Without finishing the cut edges with hems or tape, they are bound to roll up, tear, or unravel within a few washes.
Not for the larger gals, though........2007-07-31
This book is actually pretty cool. The designs are very fashion forward and I love the illustrations. Most of the tees are easy, too. HOWEVER, if you are not thin, these are pretty much not going to work. If you are bigger, or even I'd say if you weigh more than like 130 lbs (which is STILL pretty small), I'd stick with the "Generation T" book, because these designs look more like they're for really skinny girls (No, I'm not one of those skinny bashers, it's just the truth). I haven't found one idea in the "99 Ways" book that I would actually be able to wear myself without looking gross. It was disappointing that I wasn't able to use this book at all for myself. But there are really great ideas in here if you're smaller, and I'll keep the book because I can use it to make gifts for my skinny friends. It's a good book, in my opinion to have in your repertoire (hope I spelled that right), if just for t-shirt surgery practice!
Not entirely my favorite.......2007-05-27
Some of the designs are interesting but the directions are sometimes vague. If you can infer some construction plans from the sketches I think you'll be fine but as a whole there are a few more clearly written books likeGeneration T: 108 Ways to Transform a T-Shirt. Also most of these designs aren't built so that you can wear a bra with them (for you modest crafters).
good book.......2007-03-26
This book is perfect for teenages. Cute outfits can be created without a lot of money.

For Wannabee Hippies.......2006-05-04
I think if you're an old hippie (like me) you know everything in this book already..Now if you can justttt remember it!!! LOL I think it is written for young people who want to discover the art of being a hippie, and adopt that lifestyle, more than for old heads or the people who have "been there, done that" For the old heads, I would recommend a book I've had since it first came out in the 60's (i think) Living on the Earth by Alicia Bay Laurel. Or Carla Emery's book The Encyclopedia of Country Lore, these people lived the life and walked the walk, and the information is 'right on'. Namaste.
Young Hippie.......2006-01-29
I am just 19 but everyone I've ever met said I was a "left-behind hippie" so when I seen this book on Amazon I just thought to myself "if I really am a "left-behind hippie" then I should probably have the Hippie Handbook." That only made perfect since to me, so I bought it and I LOVE IT!!! Now I really can be a "left-behind hippie"! Ha! Ha! Thank you!
Find Your Bliss!.......2006-01-18
Chelsea is way cool....grew up in a commune and all. She takes me back to my Berkeley days hanging out on Telegraph! She covers alot with such a great sense of humor and love. Chelsea shows you lots of fun things to do and tells you why they are so important to the hippie lifestyle. Like taking time to smell the roses and getting in touch with your inner being. Also the illustrations are fun. Stick it to the Man....Thanks Chelsea for making this book!
Peace
Yes, I AM a hippie!.......2006-01-12
I don't usually like novelty books but this one was quite entertaining and informative. I keep going back to it. Find out how to tie-dye, macrame, make "oregano brownies", (I think I'd use mint instead of oregano), wear proper attire and don't bathe too often.
I love learning about name origins so my favorite section was on naming babies. I passed with flying colors--giving my daughter a proper hippie name--even before reading this book.
It all adds up--I'm a hippie! Hey, man, I'm going to split, light some incense, listen to some Joplin, and--later I'm going to meditate. Namaste.
Groovy.......2005-06-11
Once you get past the sterotypical idea of the book. It is actually a pretty good book. The craft ideas and simple history it has to offer is worth the price. For a person who lives the counter culture movement, It is a wonderful addition to my library.

Clashes with companion "Men's Wardrobe".......2001-10-12
I have previously read "Men's Wardrobe" from Chic Simple and found it very good. Bought "Shirt & Tie" by the same authors, hoping for more of the same quality. Sorry to say it was sadly missing. Shirt & tie is a much abreviated edition. Small in size, small in information. I in fact managed to read it on breaks before I even got it home from work. Color Photos and a crisp layout can't make up for the lack of content. Finished the book and came off with the feeling that it could have been very good. Even the shirt & tie combos given as examples of what worked together didn't. Better off staying with the larger, more informative Men's Wardrobe.
Chic Simple for the Impaired Dresser.......2000-10-26
Chic Simple books are just as the title implies: simple, for the fasionably impaired, yet very chic and well designed. I bought this book for a male friend, hoping he might take the hint! This book would be perfect for a male who has the potential to be fashion concious. Chic Simple is a series of books that combine beautiful photography of different fashion outfits or elements, with simple guidelines on how to wear them. They are probably most well known to readers of InStyle magazine, they have fashion spreads in it every month that are always helpful. As I said before, this would be a great gift for a male with fashion potential!

Great ideas!.......2002-09-24
Are you one of those people who requires paint-by-number picture kits, and dotes on full step-by-step Martha-style craft instructions? If so, don't bother with this book. If, however, you are capable of finding information on basic techniques once you realize that you want to try them, the many different great ideas in this book are just the thing! I would never have thought to tie-BLEACH a garment before dyeing it, for wonderful lightening-bolt effects, for example. All I need is good pictures of good project ideas, with a little info on what types of techniques and materials to use; I don't need someone to hold my hand and murmur reassurances as I go along. I was amazed to see another review of this book dismissing it for doing what it does so well!
A picture book.......2000-04-16
This book is great for looking at great designs but hardly one to use to create a t-shirt. There is no in depth directions to make any of these t-shirts. I was interested in making new designs for my t-shirts (tie dye) and this book is totally useless. You really have to guess at what they are doing since there are not many directions to follow. For example: They tell you to use c-clamps to secure it between wood- well how is it positioned, what size wood ? Everything is very vague in the directions. They show only one picture of folding a t-shirt and that doesn't show you anything of how to position it. I have been tie dying for 10 years and hoped for more in depth directions to create new designs. I guess it is back to the drawing board for me. I wish I hadn't wasted my money on this book. I can go to many web sites to look at great designs if I just wanted a collection of pictures. Very disapointed in this one......
