Police Lieutenant Eve Dallas encounters one of her most difficult cases in this latest offering from J. D. Robb, alter ego of bestselling author Nora Roberts. With the very first victim, Eve realizes that the killer stalking the streets of New York City isn't a run-of-the-mill serial murderer. The copycat executions are imitating the methods and victim choices of an ominous list of notorious serial killers, beginning with Jack the Ripper. And when the killer leaves a distinctive note at the crime scene, it's clear that he's targeting Eve personally--a fact that worries Roarke, Eve's shrewd husband.
Assisted by her aide, Peabody, Eve compiles a list of suspects that includes several high-profile possibilities. Their very prominence, however, complicates the investigation, for they have the power and influence to make the search difficult. All of the suspects are reluctant to cooperate but one of them is playing with Eve like a cat with a mouse by tempting her with crime scene notes and challenging her to find him. Can Eve stop him before he slaughters again? Or will his next victim be Eve herself?
Author Robb, a.k.a. Roberts, doesn't miss a beat in this police procedural thriller. The futuristic setting is rich with imaginative details; the cast of supporting characters offers an intriguing variety, while Eve and Roarke's relationship is layered with emotional intimacy and spiced with sex. Whether you're a faithful follower or new to the series, you won't be disappointed in the edge-of-the-seat suspense in Imitation In Death. Don't miss this one. --Lois Faye Dyer

Excellent.......2007-07-19
Nora Roberts Rocks! Lt. Eve Dallas makes the best protagonist and it's like a ongoing series so there is always a new story!
Great, Fabulous... Wonderful.... not perfect, but still spectacular!.......2007-07-06
First my knocks on this book. Why not bring in more killings from "the past" such as the Manson murders or John Wayne Gacy, Ted Bundy, etc? It just seems you have so many murders and psychopaths to choose from, there was not really a need to "invent" one. Although, in fairness it speaks to JD ROBB/Nora Roberts' imagination when she was able to conjure such a believable villain.
The opening chapter was absolutely brutal and violent but it was not grotesque. It was very smartly done. It grabs your attention and you are hooked. You either are determined to finish this book after chapter one or you will put it down and probably never pick it back up, but rabid fans know that Nora always delivers powerful blows like this.
Typical to the "JD ROBB" style, Roberts pulls no punches, but attacks the violence with a malevolent class and style that only she can muster. Truly, this is one of the better stories of the series. I was impressed with Portrait... I was absolutely AMAZED by Purity... this one... I don't know. I'm at a loss for words. I can't wait to see what "DETECTIVE" Peabody will do in future books.
I love the way we are really IN These characters lives. They eat, they drink, they party. They have sex, they bleed, they cry, they laugh, they plan for their future, they love and they lose. They live and (at times) they die. This story is true to reality. The characters FEEL real and by now they are a part of a reader's pseudo-family. A dysfunctional and outrageous family, but a family nonetheless.
Reading each book is like a trip home... a family reunion. And I can't wait for the next trip.
Great Read.......2007-05-06
JD Robb...What more do I need to say! Lives up to all her writing. Can't stop when I start reading. Join me!
Another Good Installment in the Death Series!.......2007-04-20
Someone is killing off women, in New York City, circa 2058, using the techniques of high profile, 20th century serial killers, Jack the Ripper, the Boston Strangler and Ted Bundy. And there is every indication that he does not intend to stop. Leaving taunting messages at the crime scenes, he baits Eve into a challenging game of cat and mouse. And once again, Lieutenant Eve Dallas finds herself on the trail of a psychopathic killer.
In this installment we find Eve on the hot trail of a psychotic killer, and struggling to solve some difficult cases that have a lot of very powerful people as suspects. And on top of it all Eve is having to deal with a number of other issues, amongst them...Roarke's revolutions about his past (his new knowledge about his mother who was tragically killed) and an ex-girlfriend of Roarke's whose new boyfriend is a suspect. Peabody, Dallas' partner is studying for the Detective's exam, and feels more than a little scared about moving-in or cohabing with her lover, McNabb. And then there is a surviving victim who reminds Eve of herself...battered and left for dead, only to be a miracle and survive. And as we all know, Eve feels the pressure to solve every case and fast. She stands for the victims and the anxiety she has often makes her seem insensitive and angry. And finally, Eve is dealing with those neverending nightmares about her father and anxiety about Summerset's impending return any day from vacation. But no matter what the odds, Eve Dallas always gets her guy or girl.
I really liked Imitation, and if you follow the series at all, you will enjoy it as well.
Immitation of a good book.......2007-01-21
Having read nearly every In Death book, I'd have to say this one was the worst. I doubt I would ever try to read it, again.
The villain on the piece is copying the murders of classic serial killers. Well, actually only two readers would know. While an interesting concept, I don't think he plot ever lives up to the potential. Yet another killer enthralled by the great Eve Dallas, that he even leaves a note for her at the scene of his murders. In quite a few of the books, the killer becomes obsessed with Eve and getting her attention and just how great would Eve be without Roarke, McNab or Feeney helping her out to get information. Hate to say it, but I think Ms. Roberts is a little too in love with this character, that she's even got the criminals singing her praises and genuflecting to her.
The book isn't helped with the carting out of the failed Mira/Eve faux mother-daughter relationship. It hasn't worked from the first book, and the more Ms. Roberts keeps trying to sell it, the less it works. So sick of this Mira/Eve thing, I've taken to skimming over any scenes involving Dr. Mira, who is the worst character in the series, and who I wish would get cut from it.
The two best scenes involved Roarke/Eve. The funniest was him trying to barbacue and the most interesting was when he learned Eve had been keeping from him the fact she recalled something new from her past. Otherwise, the book was pretty blah, over all.
Since there really wasn't much movement in the characters, aside from Peabody making detective, you may want to skip this one and read Divided in Death. Perhaps the best book in this series.

I'm a huge Nora Robert's fan. Here JD Robb series with its futuristic crime drama story line is a breath of fresh air. Why o why can't TV executives bring this storyline and characters to a weekly series. The only bummer is that I had to buy these collections on cassette tape - I would have preferred cd. Great character!

Book Description
Take Alice in Wonderland, Dark City, and Pilgrim's Progress. Put them in a blender with a lot of dry ice. Mix and serve in a dirty, broken glass. And that's just the first chapter of Some Things Are Better Left Unplugged. This postmodern fable examines the need for myth, metaphor and identity. The story satirizes many of our everyday obsessions, including the pursuit of wealth and materialism; the thirst for empty spectacles and violence; and the need for obtaining social status. This absurd tale will delight you in the tradition of Camus' The Stranger and Beckett's Waiting for Godot.
Download Description
SOME THINGS ARE BETTER LEFT UNPLUGGED is a post-modern fantasy filled with anti-heroes and anti-climaxes. An allegorical tale, the story satirizes many of our everyday obsessions, including: the pursuit of wealth and materialism; the thirst for empty spectacles and violence; and climbing whatever social, political, or economical ladder is before us. Join the man and his Nemesis, the obese tabby, and a host of others for a nightmare roller coaster ride from realm to realm, microcosm to microcosm: The Carnival, The Fray, The Garden of Earthly Delights, and The Court of The Crimson Ey'd King. Pretentious gobbledygook or an unparalleled anti-epic of the surreal and absurd? Read on and find out.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent satire about our society's nee for spectacles and useless consumer goods.......2007-08-23
I loved it. One of the weirdest novels I've ever read. Sakowski picks apart everything we are taught to believe and reveals the silliness of it all. Through a surreal lenses he catalogues everything that is entailed in being human. He goes against the modern novel format and creates an evocative anti-novel. I'm going to seek out everything he wrote.
This book surprised me.......2006-06-16
After discovering Eraserhead Press through reading a book by Carlton Mellick III that a friend leant to me I decided to check out what else they have published and bought this book. In the description, this book says that it is post-modern but I wasn't exactly sure what that meant in relation to literature so I looked it up on wikipedia. One of the definitions described postmodernism as:
"A culturally pluralistic and profoundly interconnected global society lacking any single dominant center of political power, communication, or intellectual production."
Which I think really sums up the setting of this book. First of all, the main character has no name, he's known only as "The man". In fact, none of the other characters have names either. At first this was a little off putting, but after a couple of chapters the allegorical purpose became more clear. This story is interesting and funny. Set in an extremely surreal landscape with anthropomorphic appliances and personified animals every object, plant, and action seems to have a deeper meaning. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in art films or offbeat literature.
Great book.......2005-09-03
Take a journey into a surreal fantasy world like that of Alice's Wonderland, only this one could never be turned into a Disney film no matter how many songs are put into it. This is a dark, harsh realm where logic is left outside the manhole and the irrational is king cat. Check it out.
NOT to be missed!.......2004-09-21
The last review for this book should be ignored! I wasn't going to buy this book originally just because I read the last review. Thank God I changed my mind! After LOVING several books released through Eraserhead Press, I decided to take my chances with Some Things Are Better Left Unplugged despite the bad review. I have to wonder if the last reviewer even read the book at all. He calls it "just dumb." How can this be dumb? You might not understand all of it, but that doesn't mean it's dumb. It is one of the more intelligent books out there. It is very odd and deliciously imaginative, but as literate as Kafka. It's like Lovecraft re-imagined by Terry Gilliam. I bet the other reviewer was just expecting something like Fight Club. Yeah, Fight Club is different and a great read but really not all that weird. This book is utterly outlandish. I'm not going to get into the plot but it starts out strange and just gets stranger. This is the only book by Sakowski I've been able to find but I hope there will be more available in the future.
Put This On Your Reading List, Twice........2003-04-30
UNPLUGGED has been billed as an anti-novel and believe me it delivers. Sure you've read plenty of books with anti-heroes but how about anti-villains of the polite and genteel variety? UNPLUGGED is an ambitious novel, dense with layers of meaning and rife with irony. Sakowski has a gift for illustrating the absurd.
Follow our "hero", The Man, as he makes his way through countless ridiculous and chilling situations. Picture a kingdom of marionettes ruled by an Emperor, a penguin of course. Meet half-crazed citizens clutching their most prized possessions close to them, their misfortunes. Sounds a bit like your average cocktail party in the modern day.
Stylistically UNPLUGGED is like an amputating scalpel under operating theater lights. Razor sharp and clinical, Sakowski's words cut to the heart of the matter while casting glittering reflections on countless topics. The combination of stripped bare prose with complex images and ideas creates a dizzying effect which makes you wonder how such a slim volume can contain so much. Put this one down on your reading list, twice.

Here at last is a long-hinted-at chapter in the undead existence of the immortal Count Saint-Germain: the story of Ranegonda of Saxony, one of the three great loves of Saint-Germain's life.
Book Description
Here at last is a long-hinted-at chapter in the undead existence of the immortal Count Saint-Germain: the story of Ranegonda of Saxony, one of the three great loves of Saint-Germian's life.937 A.D. The Saxon fortress of Leosan is under the almost unheard-of rule of a woman. The Gerefa of the fortress has become a monk, leaving his sister, Ranegonda, to rule in his name as best she can--and to deal with his embittered, headstrong wife as well. Into this tense and dire situation comes Saint-Germain. Shipwrecked on the Baltic shore, near the true death, he is found by Ranegonda, whom he will come to love for the gift of blood she gives him, and for her own indomitable spirit.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Historical Writing.......2006-05-21
Good story with a well-crafted plot which I found more impacting as a representative of the historical genre than as a preternatural tale. The author has an uncanny ability to recreate a previous era in a multi-faceted way that truly brings the past into the present. I've never read other volumes in this series but can attest to the fact that this one, set in the so-called "Dark Ages" during a time of Viking incursions into feudal Europe, was an enjoyable, cerebral read.
Better, Indeed.......2004-06-26
I'm fairly new to Saint-Germain, and the book that had gotten the most hoopla was Out of the House of Life (which is good, fills in some background on him), but this is better than that, in my opinion. It opens with mere mortals, then introduces the Count, with such perfect physical descriptions that you are truly transported to the flesh of the woman who meets him. The mysteries and sadness that seem to pervade this series are of course present; there is sadness in the ending that one might have liked to see otherwise, but it was still excellent. Plot and descriptions are both strong throughout, not always a trait of historicals or romance. And as a bonus, the reader learns about ergotism (called "blighted grain," I believe, in the book). Fascinating!
Saint-Germain in the 10th Century.......2003-07-28
This is one of the finer novels of Saint-Germain that I've read to date. The immortal Count Saint-Germain washes ashore at the Saxon fortress of Leosan after a shipwreck in 937 A.D. He is rescued and nurtured back to health by Ranegonda, the Gerefa of the fort. Having a women run a fortress was unheard of at the time, however her brother, the original Gerefa, has joined the monks to follow the order of the White Christ and left Ranegonda in charge.
While the overall theme of the book is consistent with other Saint-Germain novels, in this story he does not have his own elaborate household with servants, his athanors, and his wealth. What he does have is a growing romance with Ranegonda as the months go by. From what I have read, she is one of the three great loves of his life. The fortress and surrounding village is at the outskirts of the Saxon empire, ruled by King Otto. They are few in number and struggle simply to survive from starvation, the plague, and the constant threat of outlaws living in the forests and the Danes. The people now also follow the teaching of the White Christ, as opposed to the 'old gods'.
For Saint-Germain fans, this is a must read book. It is very well written, moves quickly, and has one of the more satisfying endings than some of the others I've read.
Eighth in the Saint-Germain series........2003-04-28
Or ninth, if you include "Out Of The House Of Life", which is primarily a spinoff novel about Madeline de Montalia, a former lover and vampiric "childe" of Saint-Germain, but does include some flashback scenes to Saint-Germain's early life in ancient Egypt.
Or twelfth, if you include "A Flame in Byzantium", "Crusader's Torch", and "A Candle for d'Artagnan", the spinoff series about Atta Olivia Clemens, an earlier lover and vampiric "childe".
The Saint-Germain series is a series centering on the life of Francois, le Compte de Saint-Germain (at least, that's the name he goes by in France; his name always approximates that in a form not incomprehensible to those speaking the language of the land he resides in at the time), a vampire born something on the order of 2000 years BCE. Each book in the series is a historical novel set in a different time period; this one is set in Saxony (part of what is now Germany) in the mid-900s. Saint-Germain is a rather untraditional vampire, in that he is an unequivocal hero and all-around nice guy; he does not kill when drinking blood, but rather gets the most sustenance from the blood of someone who loves him, knowing what he is and accepting it. As such, most of the books in the series are historical romances of one sort or another; this one is no exception.
If you enjoy your vampire fiction fast-paced, brutal, and horrific, this book (and this entire series) are definitely not for you. If, on the other hand, you enjoy a powerful novel with fascinating characters and excellently researched historical settings, don't object to a good romance with a few tasteful but very powerful sexual scenes, and can tolerate the concept of a heroic vampire as a main character, you'll love most of the books in this series, and this is one of the best of the lot.
Grabs you by the throat before you know what's happened.......2001-07-30
Don't let the title, or the awful cover (Who *are* these people? They certainly aren't the characters in the book!), nor the fact that it's a "vampire" novel put you off. This is, quite simply, one of the most enjoyable books I've read this year. Well drawn characters, atmosphere you could cut with a knife, a richly detailed plot, coupled with one of the strongest female leads I've ever encountered in a novel make this for a fantastic read. Add to that a plot which builds to a truly shattering climax and I suspect no purveyor of fine fiction could ever put this book down unsatisfied. While none of Yarbro's Saint-Germain novels are bad, this one stands up and grabs you by the throat, but not in a way so's you'd notice until it's too late. Oh yeah - has one of the most satisfying "just desserts" scenes I've encountered in recent memory.
