Book Description

The author of the controversial bestseller Brain Trust brings his scientific expertise to the chilling true story of unexplained phenomena on Utah's Skinwalker Ranch -- and challenges us with a new vision of reality.

For more than fifty years, the bizarre events at a remote Utah ranch have ranged from the perplexing to the wholly terrifying. Vanishing and mutilated cattle. Unidentified Flying Objects. The appearance of huge, otherworldly creatures. Invisible objects emitting magnetic fields with the power to spark a cattle stampede. Flying orbs of light with dazzling maneuverability and lethal consequences. For one family, life on the Skinwalker Ranch had become a life under siege by an unknown enemy or enemies. Nothing else could explain the horrors that surrounded them -- perhaps science could.

Leading a first-class team of research scientists on a disturbing odyssey into the unknown, Colm Kelleher spent hundreds of days and nights on the Skinwalker property and experienced firsthand many of its haunting mysteries. With investigative reporter George Knapp -- the only journalist allowed to witness and document the team's work -- Kelleher chronicles in superb detail the spectacular happenings the team observed personally, and the theories of modern physics behind the phenomena. Far from the coldly detached findings one might expect, their conclusions are utterly hair-raising in their implications. Opening a door to the unseen world around us, Hunt for the Skinwalker is a clarion call to expand our vision far beyond what we know.

4 out of 5 stars Lions and tigers and bears .. oh my!.......2007-10-10

Out here in the country, we don't lock our doors at night. But after reading the first few chapters of "Skinwalker," I had to get up (at 2 AM) and throw the deadbolt.

Yes, the Gormans' 18-month battle with high strangeness is chock full of inconsistencies. Yes, the NIDS investigative team seems pretty incompetent and unaccountably handicapped financially. Yes, a good deal of the evidence is hearsay. Yes, there is a disturbing lack of hard documentation of the phenomenon supposedly observed by the Gormans and the scientists. And yet ... this story seems a textbook illustration of the Heisenberg Principle at work --- that observers inevitably influence (and corrupt)the the phenomenon under observation.

Having experienced a little para-abnormality in my own life, I can't automatically write all this off as a hoax. Get the book, read it with an open mind --- but first, bolt the door.

5 out of 5 stars Hunt for the Skinwalker.......2007-09-09

In very descriptive and good prose with substantial evidence behind him, Kelleher has written of several extraterrestrial races that scare the hell out of me. If we ever have to deal with these beings as a race, our civilization may very well collapse. We have no in depth information about the science and technology that these beings have mastered and could end up being a subjugated race. It will be a miracle if we survive, as a race.

4 out of 5 stars Paranormal Goes Scientific.......2007-07-26

Based upon my information and belief a billionaire Las Vegas mogul has funded research for an area in Utah where some paranormal events ha
been transpiring for some time. Thi man's name is Bigelow. Many people dismiss the Paranormal with the statement that just because paranormal events occur its because we just have not been able to explain this. This is begging the question....a scientist tries to figure out why these things are happening. Mr. Bigelow also funded a chair at the University of Las Vegas to study paranormal activity. Many people state that the book has no pictures of these events...well a meeting will be held in Las Vegas with photographs. I am looking forward to attending this meeting. I was going to wait until I attended this meeting but I had to give the book 4 stars as there were no photographs of these events. I attended the first meeting with Mr. Knapp and I got the impression that the scientists investigating wished to keep a low profile. Perhaps I will edit my review when I attend the second meeting with Mr. Knapp.

3 out of 5 stars Lifted Up Only to be Letdown.......2007-07-17

First third of book a real page-turner as weird and downright creepy events on the Utah ranch are described in all their inexplicable. spine-tingling horror! This section is all a person could ask for, and deals with high strangeness.
After going over events at the Utah ranch in detail, the theme begins to wander. Aimless chapter-chaff on Sasquatch, other ranches, 'retread' hypotheses you've heard a hundred times before, and other 'blah-blah-blah' boring stuff thrown in to make up a book-sized tale. Real, real boring after a while. Finally had to force myself to keep reading.
All that said, the first part can't be beat for a good read!

4 out of 5 stars Science and the Skinwalker.......2007-07-08

After having read Dr. Colm Kelleher's Hunt for the Skinwalker, it becomes obvious why science cannot investigate the paranormal. The "paranormal" is simply that which does not operate according to known principles, as if isolated tribes of bushmen were confronted with a butane cigarette lighter. They would not know about compressed gases that could burn, or a tiny piece of flint producing sparks, or that they could be in such a compact package. The cigarette lighter would be "paranormal" to them, and they would have to learn unknown principles before they could come up with a non-supernatural explanation of it.

There are, therefore, quite logical reasons why some investigators do not want to consider any explanation for Bigfoot other than "it is simply an unknown apelike creature." Any other explanation is not acceptable to what those investigators call "science," since science is thought to be a discipline that provides natural explanations for phenomena. With that definition of science, of course Bigfoot has to be an unknown apelike creature, and any evidence that shows otherwise has to be disregarded as a misunderstanding or hoax.

This is the same problem as found in the creation-evolution debate. Evolution is the only acceptable explanation in what some investigators call "science," namely, providing natural explanations for phenomena. In this case the phenomenon is the existence of life on earth. Explanations that allow the possibility of some unknown factor in the development of life on earth must be disregarded, if you accept this definition of science.

The Skinwalker phenomena provide us knowledge of an additional dimension. They appear to have been produced by an intelligence that was smarter than humans. They have this in common with the Bigfoot and UFO abduction phenomena, as well as the "origin and development of life" phenomenon. This suggests that these phenomena may not yield to human understanding without superhuman effort. The Skinwalker experience confirms this. It defied all attempts to categorize and understand it.

As a matter of fact, this is our experience with nature, if you think of it. It is well said that nature does not give up her secrets easily. All of the efforts to harness nature have required great effort by many very intelligent humans. Think of flight and nuclear power, which were only made human servants to some degree in the last century, and no doubt there is still much to know.

Natural explanations for phenomena, however, are not all that there is to science. The highest calling of science is to investigate the unknown, even if new principles of the universe have to be found before phenomena can be explained. Materialist mythololgy is not science. The true scientist must bravely face the unknown, and not pretend that known principles account for that which is clearly unknown. That is what Dr. Kelleher and George Knapp have done here.

Studying phenomena that appear to be irrational is the only way of understanding what is happening. Just because they do not yield to present understanding does not mean that they never will, but it is necessary to frankly face the fact that we do not understand them. If there are ways to overcome gravity, or turn off its effects for an aircraft, or overcome the Laws of Relativity, we will not find them by timidly hiding from the unknown. If we grasp this principle, we will find ourselves in the beginning of an ability to understand the world far beyond what we have ever known, even in the 20th century.

We really do not fully know the explanation of a phenomenon until we can reproduce it. We cannot reproduce gravity, for instance, because we don't know how it is produced, or even what form it takes. But it is at least predictable, so it can be studied and expected to operate according to rules we can understand. The Skinwalker phenomena are not predictable, and seem to be produced by an intelligent force that actively tries to keep us from understanding it.

Methods of defeating and harnessing this intelligent force may be possible, but perhaps not by the methods of science. We may have to face this possibility and meet the challenge posed before we can take the next step into the future. But first we have to overcome the hindrance to progress that is evident in the mistaking of materialist mythology for science. This book is an important step in that direction.

Book Description

Three of New York Times bestselling author Tony Hillerman's most popular novels are together for the first time in one volume.

Tony Hillerman is one of the most revered and honored mystery writers published today. This stunning collection includes the critically acclaimed novels Skinwalkers, A Thief of Time, and Coyote Waits, all of which have been adapted for PBS by producer Robert Redford. This is a must-have anthology from one of the great masters of suspense.

In Skinwalkers, three shotgun blasts explode into the trailer of Officer Jim Chee of the Navajo Tribal Police. Chee survives to join partner Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn in a frightening investigation that takes them into a dark world of ritual, witchcraft, and blood -- all tied to the elusive and evil "skinwalker." In A Thief of Time, a noted anthropologist vanishes at a moonlit Indian ruin where "thieves of time" ravage sacred ground for profit. When two corpses appear amid stolen goods and bones at an ancient burial site, Leaphorn and Chee must plunge into the past to unearth the astonishing truth behind a mystifying series of horrific murders.

And in Coyote Waits, it wasn't the car fire that killed Navajo Tribal Policeman Delbert Nez -- a bullet did. Officer Jim Chee's good friend Del lies dead, and a whiskey-soaked Navajo shaman is found with the murder weapon. The old man is Ashie Pinto. He's quickly arrested for homicide and defended by a woman Chee could either love or loathe. But Pinto won't utter a word of confession or denial. Leaphorn and Chee must unravel a complex plot involving a historical find, a lost fortune, and the mythical Coyote, who is always waiting, and always hungry.

5 out of 5 stars Land of Enchantment.......2007-08-28

Mystery fans are in good company with Skinwalkers, which is set in the Land of Enchantment (New Mexico). I was always a fan of the Inspector Morse stories, and had to add Chee to my favorite sleuth list after reading this book. I'm sure it lacks in pure police procedural technique, but it isn't a training manual. It's a good fiction read. As an added bonus, Hillerman's descriptions of the sky, clouds, dust (can almost feel it), vehicles, and people add to the realism. First to last page, it's absorbing and entertaining, which are, for me, criteria to a good mystery. If you like Skinwalkers, you will probably like: Ghost in the Rainbow

5 out of 5 stars Superb: A brilliant writer at his absolute best........2006-11-28

Oklahoma's own Tony Hillerman shines brightly with "Skinwalkers", the first of the Leaphorn/Chee mysteries to put the two characters together in the same book. One of the best novels from one of the most brilliant writers of the past 35 years. VERY highly recommended!

3 out of 5 stars a nice quick read.......2006-03-22

This is the first in this series that I've read and I enjoyed it. It's a quick read and surprising. I've heard other books in the series are better and I'd like to read them and see for myself.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting Native American Mystery.......2006-03-06

It's a pretty decent book and has some suspense but you see where it's going about 3/4 of the way through. If you're interested in policework and Native American culture and lore it's a good read. I would have liked more supernatural aspects with a title like "Skinwalkers" though......
If you're a cop, like me, prepare to be a little annoyed by the lack of realism in a few law enforcement aspects; but then again, isn't that almost always the case!? The fact that it involves Tribal Police does add a redeeming (interesting) facet.

5 out of 5 stars Tony Hillerman & Skinwalkers.......2004-06-05

My book is about a mystery that goes on in the Navajo Nation. The characters in the book are victims that are bothered in the night. The main characters in the book goes on a investagation to find the culprit of the raids in the night. The characters name is Jim Cheeand he is one of the people that are afraid of the night. He as a cat that doesn't go out at night to hunt because it is to scared. The book takes place in Farmington and Shiprock, Chinle. It all started with a gun shot near Jim Chee's house. The police try to help him find the skinwalker that is bmessing around with him. Some of the stories that go around the Navajo Nation are true. The stories are mainley about skinwalkers that are messing with people. The book is really cool because it really twist your mind. I also think that people that read it is going to get scared because I got scared reading it in the night. My mom bought me the book because she thought I would it and I did. I gave the book five stars because it is a reality thing. They made a movie about it but I never got the chance to see it. The book is very interesting and it really takes your breath away. Some people have already read it and they probably think it's really cool. I also think the author really is bringing southwest alive and making it interesting.

5 out of 5 stars "Sun will be created - They say he has planned it all.".......2005-07-23

Skinwalkers are witches in the Navaho legends and can fly or turn themselves into a dog or wolf. This mystery involves the conflict between Skinwalkers and shamen and belegana medicine. Then again it may be a straight forward set of independent murders. In any event it looks like some one is out to kill Navajo Tribal Police Officer Jim Chee and he has not got a clue as to why.

As with all of Tony Hillerman's stories you have the feeling you are there. In fact if you have visited or live in the area (Four Corners canyons) that the mystery takes part in, you will be better able to identify with the people and landmarks. And as with his other books there is an overt and covert story.

I have read the book but the addition of the voice of George Guidall ads a dimension to the story by helping visualize the people and correcting pronunciation of certain words. I suggest you read the book and listen to the recorded version.

I first saw the TV version of Skinwalkers with Robert Redford. He has a habit of redfordizing stories for his own agenda. This book was so strongly written that I thought Redford did not have a chance to modify it. I was wrong.

The book is much more in depth and the motive and additional characters made the mystery much more intriguing.

            4 out of 5 stars It's refreshing..........2006-11-24

            - To have a story actually finish in one book.... (i.e. Jordan take notes)
            - Have action with plot
            - Hero's with flaws
            - Hero's that die

Are there unanswered questions? Sure...- who was the protector; nature of the falling star (although anyone could take a pretty good guess); nature of the lifetrees; etc.

However, if you are not writing a critique on fantasy and just read for enjoyment, you will like it.

A solid book... and it ends! ;^)

3 out of 5 stars Above average fantasy novel.......2006-04-17

This is an above average fantasy yarn but I would probably not read it again in the future.

The characters are all interesting & the plot is interesting at times. However, I got a little tired of the constant attacks of the forces of the Dark One. I thought this became a little too monotonous and was used as filler.

I didn't really get what the nature of the "Fallen Star" was. Was it supposed to represent advanced technology from somewhere unknown which was the threat to this magical world? How did Father Marcus come to possess the forbidden knowledge? I thought near the end of the book that the story couldn't possibly be wrapped up with so few pages to go and there would be a sequel, but it was. It was not a satisfying ending for me which is why I only give it 3 stars.

After reading the Authors' Notes at the end, it is a shame that Richey's name is not listed first since it was his brainchild to begin with. I am sure that Piers Anthony was listed first strictly for marketing reasons in order to sell the book. Frankly, it is hard to see much of Anthony's style in this book.

3 out of 5 stars Quest for a better author.......2002-10-11

Although this book carries Piers Anthony's name, and starts out in a traditional style of his (nude female character), I found it lacking his touch. Which is acceptable after you read his thoughts about the collaboration. Unfortunately his thoughts are at the very end of the book. I dislike authors who use fancy words, like 'cubit', instaed of just saying 'foot'. There are many words used that are either made up or archaic, and it doesn't help the story at all. All in all the story is a nice twist on the fantasy theme, but it does drag on a bit. Which is why I give it 3 stars...wortrh reading once.

            5 out of 5 stars A great read!.......2000-12-06

I've not read much fantasy since childhood, but this book has opened me up to a new world. I had a hard time putting "Quest" down, and traded plenty of my sleep time in for it. But, that suited me well since it was more fun than dreaming anyway! The authors do an incredible job of depicting the imaginary world and inhabitants of Infinitera. I'd recommend this book to anyone who appreciates imaginative creativity at its best!

            5 out of 5 stars Bravo Bravo!!.......1999-10-23

Here you've got an engaging story on a distant world, one which has fought already one war to keep it from destruction, and now faces another such challenge. Good characters with good characterization. A very good read and one heck of a way to start a writing career (James Richey). Keep up the good work!
