4 out of 5 stars No Surprises For Me.......2007-09-15

I also should have read Night Sins first, but I still enjoyed Guilty As Sin a great deal. Tami is an excellent writer and the "electricity" between characters was undeniable. I thought the book started out kind of slow and pretty much figured there wasn't going to be too many twists. But it stayed interesting and turned into a real page turner at the end. I recommend this read.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it.......2007-07-11

Started at 10am, didn't put it down til 3am. This was my first Hoag book, but definitely not my last.

I love reading Tami Hoag, she is almost as good as James Patterson-who is my favorite author. No doubt you can see I enjoy mystery, suspense and
thrillers.

1 out of 5 stars A Great Sleep Aid.......2007-06-10

I have never read anything by Tami Hoag before and I doubt that I will again.

This story starts off slow and gets worse quickly. It is very rare that I don't finish a book once I have started it. I only made it 60 pages into this and it took me four days. It is really very boring. It might be good if one is having some problems with insomnia.

4 out of 5 stars Just plain good.......2007-03-12

If you're hooked on Hoag and have read Night Sins, you've got to read Guilty as Sin. I actually liked this one better than Night Sins. The familiar style of Tami Hoag is ever present and her characters are just plain good.

I'm sorry, but i'll have to agree with the previous comment. This book wasn't really all that interesting except for some parts. What really got me kinda upset was the discription on the back of the book. The book didnt really have anything to do with it at all.

1 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK SUCKED!!!!!!!!.......2007-04-20

Ok, I read Urban Books ALL the time. They are my fav publisher. I have to say this is the WORST book they have EVER put out. The back cover that tells what the story is about it TOTALLY misleading. It have NOTHING to do with the story. The writing is very confusing. The story makes no sense at all. It's like each chapter is a diffrent weird story. And not in a good way. The chapters and people NEVER tie into one another. I don't know. Buy at your own risk. This one's a str8 DUD!!!!!!!!!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Easy to read devotional on the power of guilt and how to set it free.......2007-05-01

Why Do I Always Feel Guilty by Mary Whelchel is a fantastic devotional read. She breaks guilt down into three categories: guilt for a known wrong, not feeling guilty for an unknown wrong (doing 40 mph in a 30 mph zone without realizing what the speed limit is, ignorance is not an excuse), and unnecessary guilt. I think that most of the guilt I suffer from is unnecessary guilt from past sins, other's expectations, my own expectations, etc, etc. Whelchel does a wonderful job of encouraging the reader to 'fess up to sins we know we've done, but she emphasizes that God really does forget our sins once we've confessed them. He moves them as far away from us as the east is from the west, and it's only Satan who throws them up in our faces to try to bring us down and pull us away from God. She includes powerful verses to strengthen us and chase those guilty thoughts away. Whelchel is a conversational writer; as I read, I could hear her talking, friend to friend. She's not afraid to expose her own flaws and weaknesses and use them as examples of how we can let go of guilt and move closer to God. I've been repeating Romans 8:1-2 (There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death.)in my quest to shed my own guilt. Jesus doesn't condemn me for my sins, and I am certainly no better than He, so how can I condemn myself? This is a quick read, eleven chapters each easily read in one night, and can bring about a great change of heart. Read this and pass it on to a friend.

4 out of 5 stars Seventeen Stories of Sex and Violence.......2003-08-22

A 300-pound sex goddess tricks her lover into committing murder for her. A porn king longs to make a respectable movie, but things go horribly wrong. An elderly man finds the best lover he ever had, but she exacts a terrible price.

All of the stories in Flesh and Blood involve people who are truly guilty as sin. The most shocking story involves a serial murderer who favors a particular part of the body when he shoots his victims.

None of the stories in this collection hesitate to take a careful look at the dark side of human nature. Whether describing a woman hiding under a bed while her lover seduces another woman or a couple who have become bored with their regular life and want to seek out more daring sexual adventures, the authors do not flinch from describing human nature at its most graphic.

Many of the best stories are set in the past, during that period of the 1940s when "noire" ruled and, in fact, the editors of this collection say they were influenced by James Cain and Raymond Chandler. The editors explain that they set out to "shock, titillate and thrill."

If you have romantic ideas about love, this is not the book for you. The characters in this book say "I love you," right before they plunge in the knife or pull on the trigger. Some of the stories are shocking and some are scary, but all of the seventeen stories in this collection are very well-written.

      3 out of 5 stars A Murder & Mayhem Bookclub review.......2003-04-21

Short, sharp, savvy and saucy - with a nod in the direction of the classic "noir" or "hardboiled" style this short story collection delivers your crime in very edible bites.

The decorated group of authors assembled here each contribute their modern interpretation to where it all began in crime; uncomplicated motive, meaningful encounters and your murders delivered by gun and blade. The editors give their thanks to the original masters of crime fiction: James M Cain, Raymond Chandler and Mickey Spillane etc in what is a highly enjoyable dish of "erotic tales of crime and passion". But with a liberal splash of humour and irony.

The people we encounter every day and think nothing of it: what does that bank teller, airline attendant, security guard have cooking on their mental back burners behind the facade of polite efficiency? Murder.

Reality checks in with the fedora hat and overcoat here; enjoy these 23 windows into the everyday world that includes bad men and nasty women with a grudge. Most of these stories would aptly be described as fantastical - how many gorgeous women can the average Joe bed in a day? - but they are fun rides into the seamier side of life.

5 out of 5 stars This Latest Volume Will Titillate and Challenge the Reader.......2003-04-14

The pairing is so obvious that it's remarkable someone hadn't thought to create a compilation of stories combining graphic sex with noir detective settings long ago. Isn't that what detective fiction is ultimately all about, anyway? Detective stories all seem to involve the seven deadly sins sooner or later. There's greed, envy, lust, lust, lust, lust and lust. I think I covered 'em all. However, not much else remains covered in FLESH & BLOOD: GUILTY AS SIN, the latest in the FLESH & BLOOD anthologies of original stories edited by Max Allan Collins and Jeff Gelb.

Collins needs no introduction to readers of detective fiction or to anyone else, really, since his graphic novel, THE ROAD TO PERDITION, was adapted to film. And Gelb? Horror aficionados have prized his HOT BLOOD series, edited with writer and writing instructor extraordinaire Michael Garrett, for some time now. FLESH & BLOOD is a logical outgrowth of the HOT BLOOD series and succeeds as thoroughly. The reasons for the success of both series are the uncanny ability of the editors to mix each anthology with well-known writers and those who are soon to be well known and to get their best out of all of them.

This is far more than a collection of "dirty stories." The sexual content is graphic but always fits appropriately within the context of the tale. Collins's own "Lie Beside Me," co-written with Matthew V. Clemens, is an excellent example of this. The story begins with John Sand, a retired secret agent who is finding that domestic bliss is boring. Mrs. Sand decides to re-awaken their marriage by reminding Sand of certain aspects of his exciting past, just as the past suddenly --- and dangerously --- threatens to intrude. This is the story that Ian Fleming, alas, never got to write.

Then there is O'Neil De Noux's contribution, "The Iberville Mistress." De Noux is a frequent contributor to Gelb's anthologies. No one can write an erotic tale set in New Orleans, that most erotic of cities, like De Noux. This tale of a private eye who becomes an unwitting, though not necessarily unwilling, instrument of the termination of a marriage is worth the price of admission all by itself.

Loren Estelman contributes a fine and humorous offering entitled "A Hatful of Ralph" about a department store detective who finds out more than he should about the extracurricular activities of a couple of coupling employees, while Gelb's "Perfection" is perhaps the ultimate cautionary tale about getting what you wish for. Garrett is represented as well in "Sex Crimes," which is the perfect title for a little band of thrill killers who, uh, really get into their work.

There are a couple of surprises as well. Clemens and Gelb score a coup with "Walking to Paris," a story by the much missed and remembered Rex Miller, who comes out of an illness-imposed retirement to present this story about a stewardess with a penchant for the ultimate payback. And then there's "Bank Job" by Thomas Roche. I was heretofore unfamiliar with Roche's work, a deficiency in my literary education that I plan to remedy soon. "Bank Job," gloriously set in San Francisco, chronicles what befalls a policeman who finds himself kidnapped during a bank robbery and who is almost too distracted by what befalls him to figure out an escape. This story is perhaps the most bizarre in the entire collection and is certainly one of the best.

FLESH & BLOOD: GUILTY AS SIN continues the tradition established by its predecessors of combining sex, violence and mystery into a steamy literary mix that both titillates and challenges the reader. Hopefully, we can look forward to seeing new volumes of this collection for many years to come.

        Book Description

        Night Sins:
A young boy disappears. There are no witnesses, no clues - only a note, cleverly taunting, casually cruel. Has a cold-blooded kidnapper struck? Or is this a reawakening of a long-quiet serial killer?

A tough-minded investigator on her first make-or-break case . . . A local cop who fears that big city evils have come to stalk his small town home . . . Together they are hunting for a madman who knows no bounds, to protect a town that may never feel safe again.

        Guilty as Sin:
A respected member of the community stands accused of a chilling act of evil. But when a second boy disappears, a frightened public demands to know: Have the police caught the wrong man? Is the nightmare continuing . . . Or just beginning?

Prosecutor Ellen North believes she's building a case against a guilty man - and that he has an accomplice in the shadows. As she prepares for the trial of her career, Ellen suddenly finds herself swept into a cruel contest of twisted wits, a dark game of life and death . . . With an evil mind as guilty as sin.

5 out of 5 stars We "know" we're forgiven as Christians but still feel guilt........1999-11-16

Personal experience has left me in the bind the author talks about-forgiven but still bearing the burden of guilt God never intended for us to carry. The book is not only a deeply moving, helpful and hopeful read, but it's the kind that can be read and reread, because we too often forget our Christian inheritance. If Satan keeps whispering to you what a big dissapointment you are to the Father, read this book and send him packing.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent book of hope........1999-10-09

This book gives hope to those of us who may have thought in the past that there was no hope for us to enter the kingdom of heaven. It gives us the tools to chip away at overwhelming guilt, introduces comprehensively the meaning of God's grace, and helps us to forgive, not only others, but ourselves.

An overall good book. The story was excellent. A few twists and turns that kept things interesting. I like the fact that the characters were all "evil" to one degree or another. Pinch was concerned for his "friends" only in terms of them being usefull to him, and his "friends" were the same.

Definitely could have used some proofreading and editing though. Quite a few spelling, and gramatical errors. Also at one point Pinch goes into some tunnels with an oil lamp and his sword drawn. He then falls down. His candle goes out, and he drops his dagger. Earlier in the book he was in the tunnel with a candle and dagger.

Still, if you like D&D stories, and can find it, it's a good read.

3 out of 5 stars Ok Story, but sloppy writing.......2005-08-13

The story of pinch and his little band of thieves is reasonably good, but I began to get the feeling the author was being paid on word count and he padded the story by incessant usage of rogue, old rogue, and regulator.

2 out of 5 stars Good ideas, Weak writing.......2004-09-11

The plot was reasonably good, and the character of Pinch was interesting and had great promise. In fact, it started pretty well, and it ended well -- the last chapter was a good one.

The other people in Pinch's gang could have used some better development, especially Maeve, who seemed like a useless character until the last two chapters. Therin was probably the best developed of the other characters, since there was a bit of tension between him and Pinch at times.

The problems? First, this has to be the most poorly edited book I've ever read. It's filled with errors, mostly things that a spell checker would not catch. Extra words in sentences. Missing words in sentences. "though" instead of "through", "loose" instead of "lose", and so on. ALL over, and worse towards the end.

Second, the author seemed to be so intent on coming up with the next bit of thieves' slang, that he forgot to pay attention to the details of what he was writing and make them consistent. These problems kicked in about 1/3 of the way through and got worse and worse. This book suffers simply from poor writing. There are contradictions all over the place, sometimes from chapter to chapter, sometimes from one page to the next. The dialog is frequently repetitive, almost like a character forgot what he said two pages ago.

Here are just a few examples (none of these are major plot spoilers):

            - Prince Vargo described as blonde, with reddish beard. Later, he is "the dark haired prince".
            - On one page, it is "late afternoon". A few pages later (and less than an hour later in sequence of events), Vargo is "sipping his morning tea".
            - mixup of which character was being talked about -- the name changed from one page to the next
            - An amulet Pinch wears is described as being created from a piece of skullbone from a great prophet, the Dawnbreaker, wrapped in precious metal. Next page, a priestess says the Dawnbreaker called upon its powers once or twice (HOW, if it was made after he was dead?)
            - Pinch detects a trap with a rod he carries, and a few pages later is a sentence about "the trap Pinch detected with Maeve's scroll"
            - It's established early that Pinch is older than the princes. When he is describing to his friends how ruthless Manferic was, he recounts a situation that happened when he was 10 years old... Which involved the king sending princes Vargo and Throdus to perform executions. (When they were what? 6 years old? 8? unlikely).

There were LOTS more. Many of these detail issues were minor, and just one or two would be easily forgivable. But they were SO numerous that this was a very frustrating read. It's a shame that the writing and editing was so sloppy, because this story and character had lots of promise -- it could have been so much better. If the middle of the book had been written to the quality of the last chapter, it probably would have earned 3, maybe even 4, stars from me.

            3 out of 5 stars Pinch me!.......2003-01-20

This novel was very well researched. You can tell that by the extremely thick and heavy usage of the "Thief talk". It is paced quite nicely, although some of the "surprises" were fairly clear to me. If not for the heavy slang the thieves use this book would have really been great.

3 out of 5 stars Not your usual TSR offering.......2001-11-27

David Cook, King Pinch (TSR, 1995)

The typical Dungeons and Dragons-related novel has one pace to it: breakneck. I've wondered more than once if one of the writing guidelines for new TSR authors is Poe's old maxim that all novels should be written as if they are to be read in one sitting. (This, of course, is why Poe wrote only one novel.) I've read a lot of D&D-themed novels, and very few break that mold. The most recent to cross my desk is David Cook's King Pinch.

Pinch is a thief of indeterminate birth who leads a band of merry men (and one overly merry woman) down a road of small-time crookery-- that is, until a member of Pinch's past life shows up and takes him and his companions back to Ankhapur, the city of Pinch's birth, with promises of a nebulous job that will put enough money in their bank accounts to keep them comfortable for life, and threats of their heads on pikes if they don't come.

The book starts off in an almost leisurely way, with Cook taking some time to develop Pinch's character before getting into the action. While that's never a bad thing, it does jar in the greater scheme of things. The pace does pick up as the novel goes on, but I wonder if most series readers who focus on TSR novels won't abandon this one given its initial slow pace. More fool them, however, because the reader of swords-and-sorcery fantasy will find much to enjoy once it gets going. ***

The sovereign arms of dominion have long ceased to be "personal" arms, and this is, surprisingly, the first comprehensive book on the subject. Whether you're interested in Queen Victoria or in the blazons of the sons of John of Gaunt, all are covered in detail and most are ilustrated, some in color. Three dozen genealogical charts help the reader follow the circuitous succession and the changes in dynasties which caused graphic changes in the royal arms. A great weekend read, as well as a very useful reference tool.
