Newest in a classic series.......2000-09-06
This is the new edition of "Environmental Policy in the 1990s," a series now considered to be the most important in the field. This edition has some of the classic essays from earlier editions, but is expanded to cover the Clinton administration and address issues of a global nature.
I have been using this series as a basic text in graduate courses in environmental policy for years. I consider it to be a primary source of not only teaching, but research and basic information. All of the essays are clearly written and as unbiased as possible. I give this my highest recommendation.
(Addendum in 2007. This series is up to six editions with a seventh due out this summer. All are essential for the serious student of environmental policy and history).

I almost abandoned this book like three times. Was Dismus really a cop in other books? Because I'm a housewife in Ohio and I know better than to stand on the edge of a cliff with a bad guy. Dismus is the hapless victim of everything in the story, including his affair with a pregnant woman only four months widowed. I had the ending figured out well before halfway, a record for me and a sad indictment of the story. The only person I cared about in the whole book was the convicted felon -- another sad indictment. I should have bailed early, and given this mutt one star.
I rate books as follows:

As always, I loved, the main characters. The plot, just did not, hold my attention. Not nearly as well done, as, THE MERCY RULE.
A solid, more upbeat sequal to 'Dead Irish'.......2006-04-06
Although intended to be a stand alone, I would strongly recommend reading the previous Dismas Hardy book entitled 'Dead Irish' to understand some of the self-torment on the part of Dismas Hardy that continues into this book.
For those that have read 'Dead Irish', this book is not nearly so dark and tortured. Not that it's a comedy since there are plenty of people dying, being set up in criminal schemes and hard choices are faced by many of the main characters. However, the overall climate of the book is much less severe.
As to the general plot - an old colleague of Hardy's named Rusty from the DA's office warns him that a murderer who had threatened to kill them both when he was released was being released soon. Rusty's houseboat becomes the scene of an apparent double murder and it turns out that lots of people had a motive to kill Rusty, including an ex-cop, a jealous husband, the mafia, a prosecutor and the ex-con murderer.
Good, solid read. I give this one a B+.
Dismiss Never Disappoints And Neither Do Connelly.......2005-09-21
The second book in the Dismis Hardy series. Light easy mystery. Great read, involved unpredictable plot. Interesting back story and characters. Dismas never fails to disappoint, sometimes you love him, sometimes you hate him and sometimes you just don't know about him. And of course at his side is his tortured soul best friend Abe Glitsky. A little disappointed with the ending. You don't have to read the series in order, but it's more fun to do so - you get to know and live with the characters from the start.

Even odds on whether it's worth it........2000-02-16
Despite the subtitle ("A True Tale of Love and the Vig") I was plagued throughout my reading of this semi-confession of a former Ivy-leaguer's plummet into the world of bookmaking by a certain dubiousness. Alson's story is written in a kind of flippantly open manner that undermines the believability of his insider's story. Don't get me wrong, it's very entertaining and all, but his coyness about just how "connected" the small-time operation he was a part of was came across as rather disingenuous to me. While his confusion and despair about figuring out what he should be doing with his overeducated self hit the right notes, the subplot of the long distance sort of relationship was often more annoying than interesting. Still, not a bad little peek into bookmaking.

I really liked this book! I thought it was a refreshing and entertaining look at how are lives don't always end up as we had planned. There are some unresolved issues, but perhaps that makes the book all the more realistic. A movie version of this book would do very well.

This book was a great but limited look inside a small-time illegal sports book. Alson's story is very funny, compelling, and informative but suffers from his distracting whining about a long-distance girlfriend and the unresolved mystery of whether his operation was part of a bigger syndicate. His frustrated accounts of big-time editors wanting his services as a bookie instead of a writer are a gem

I first heard about this book in Kevin Starr's California and the American Dream. I have been reading a lot of California History and wanted to dive into this classic of the genre. I have quite enjoyed this book and would recommend it highly to anyone interested in California's early days. It also has a lot to say to the unique qualities of America's character, some of which are not very pleasant. The discussion of the conquest of California and the frequent episodes of vigilante law are very interesting.
A more candid, realistic view of the pioneers.......2003-04-14
First published in 1886, California: A Study Of American Character: From The Conquest In 1846 To The Second Vigilance Committee In San Francisco is a study providing an early history of California and which seeks to provide a more realistic assessment of the state than most. Josiah Boyce found he could not trust many of the historic narratives about the state's founding, and sought a more candid, realistic view of the pioneers. Fact and myth are contracted in an important history which pulls no punches.

....but Royce is a very fine writer, and his book on California history, though penned long ago, makes very interesting reading. At the center of the book is Royce's discussion of Fremont's role in the conquest of California, and the conclusions he draws after interviewing Fremont himself and even showing him parts of this book. Definitely required reading for the student of California history.

The United States in recent years has been abandoning its historical role as a leader in environmental regulation. At the same time, the European Union, spurred by political integration, has enacted many new environmental laws and assumed a leadership role in promoting global environmental sustainability. Green Giants?, one of the most detailed comparisons of the environmental policies of America and Europe yet undertaken, looks at current policy trends in the United States and the European Union -- the two largest economic actors in the world -- and the implications they have for future transatlantic and global cooperation. The contributors -- leading European and American scholars and practitioners -- examine similarities and differences in specific policy areas in order to assess whether United States and European Union policies are diverging, pursuing similar goals and methods, or undergoing a "hybridization" through joint learning and exchanges. They find that although European and American policies may parallel each other somewhat in domestic regulation, they are clearly diverging in the "third generation" of environmental concerns, which include such global problems as climate change, international trade, and sustainable development. In the final chapter the editors conclude that transatlantic dialogue and cooperation at the highest level are necessary if these two economic and political giants are to lead the international community toward a stable and secure ecological future.
