Book Description
The classic techno-thriller of superpower espionage from New York Times bestselling master of suspense Stuart Woods!
Sifting through reams of seemingly unrelated intelligence, CIA analyst Katherine Rule discovers a chilling pattern: an ultrasecret Baltic submarine base...a crafty Russian spy-master in command...a carefully planned invasion about to be launched from dark waters.
Her suspicions, however, are dismissed by those higher up; her theory, they say, is too crazy to be true. But to Katherine, it's just crazy enough to succeed--unless she can stop it. If she's right, an attack sub has already penetrated friendly waters. Worse yet, the enemy has penetrated deep into her own life, so deep she can touch him. And in this game, one wrong touch can mean Armageddon.
Customer Reviews:
Quite a good thriller.......2006-04-12
Another submarine thriller in the same vein as Tom Clancy but pacier and without the ponderous detail. The writing of course makes all the difference. A female protagonist discovers a master plan, a creation of a foreign government, and sets out to foil it. Her only obstacles are her bosses who do not believe the evidence. Woods appears to have researched this throughly.
A vey good read.
Shallow but worth a read.......2005-07-10
Mysterious submarines prowl the coast of Sweden, while a young an ambitious Soviet submarine commander receives new orders. A not so young, but even more ambitious Soviet general plans spy-missions from a secret base made to look like any prosperous town in the western world. Meanwhile, Kathryn Rule, a non-nonsense intelligence analyst, sees growing signs of Russian focus in the Baltic...
"Deep Lie" isn't the deepest of the submarine technothrillers that invaded bookshelves in the late 1980's (whether inspired by "Red October" or written earlier but reissued to cash in on the craze), nor is it particularly loaded with the sorts of arcane info that only Clancy was able to divine out of military technology (remember, this was pre-internet.). Yet "Deep" is still shallow fun in the way it develops disparate storylines and ties them together. Definitely a fun if forgettable read.
Lighter weight spy novel..........2004-05-03
...but quite fun to read. Although I am sure most people, including Mr. Woods himself, are tired of this comparison, this book is very Clancy-ish in its Russia vs. U.S. one-upmanship and its submarine and weaponry technological detail work.
The story is told from two alternating viewpoints: the first from CIA department head Katherine Rule who thinks she has discovered a plot in which Russia will be invading Sweden. Not one of her superiors believes her and she must go behind their backs to continue investigating this dire possibility. The other viewpoint is that of a Russian submarine commander, moved from his normal naval command to an elite Russian fighting force, the one being trained for the invasion itself.
The storytelling is competent and not as technologically detailed as a Tom Clancy, making the story, in my opinion, flow more smoothly than Clancy's. I had figured out who the mole in the CIA book was long before the end of the book but it held my interest enough to want to find out how & when Katherine would discover it.
All in all, a nice earlier book by Woods and a step above most of his somewhat cookie-cutter mystery thrillers.
Immature and unprofessional fairytale with zero reality........2003-05-16
25 pages in it became obvious that this book is nothing but poor man's James Bond 007-style fairytale. Author has zero knowledge of Russian social politics and geography. Time line is way way of base! The only reason I finished reading this book is to see how bad it will get towards the end. I read dozens of books about cold war and espionage and I would have to put this in bottom 3. Unless you enjoy unrealistic Star wars type fiction this book is not for you..
Katherine Rule Rules!.......2002-11-26
This is an excellent submarine thriller. It was quite refreshing having a female protaganist in an espionage book. This book is not as formula as Tom Clancy and that's a rather good thing. I love submarine thrillers, and this is certainly one of the better ones.

Money, Power, Drugs, Policy, Cocaine/Crack Epidemic.......2006-08-26
The first sign of corruption in a society ... is that the end justifies the means. ~Georges Beranos, "Why Freedom?" (1955)
When you finish going through this book, you will gain a new perspective on the drugs war, and some of the root causes of the drugs problem in United States.
"Look Mike, our country has many diverse interests and you're one man in one little corner of the world. There are a lot of people a lot smarter than you and I involved in this business who might know a few things we don't. So just because an action might seem right doesn't mean it is; and even if it's the right thing to do, sometimes it's not the healthiest."
...
He was silent for a long moment. "Mike, don't ever forget a peanut butter sandwich."
"You're kidding."
"No, I'm not. I'm telling you this because I like you."
...
"Bario was one of the best and most committed undercover agents in DEA; he had done some of the agency's highest-level deep cover work. He was also a friend of mine. A year earlier he had been arrested for smuggling heroin from his post of duty in Mexico. While in jail in a Texas border town awaiting a removal hearing, he took a bite of a peanut butter sandwich and went into convulsions, and then a deep coma. He died a month later. He wife was told by the prison warden that strychnine had been found in his blood. The official autopsy report listed the cause of death as asphyxiation -- he choked on a peanut butter sandwich.
Many of Bario's fellow agents were aware that he was involved in cases that overlapped CIA interests. The rumor was that he "knew too much" about the CIA smuggling drugs into the United States to support its own interests and that he was killed by either members of DEA's Internal Security (who was in reality CIA) or by the CIA itself. I had always been one of those who had placed little credence in the rumor. Who could really believe that a branch of the U.S. government would assassinate its own people for any reason?"

Reads like a Tom Clancy novel - but this is TRUE.......2004-02-12
Mike Levine is a good writer. Add that to the fact that he was one of the best undercover agents in American history and you've got the equation for a great book. I had to stop myself a number of times to remember that this is NON-Fiction. The bumbling and deception that goes on at the higher levels of our Criminal Justice system would be laughable had this been a work of fiction. There is just too much detail here for it NOT to be true. This book, coupled with Levine's other book "Deep Cover" show you how the people in power manipulate the media to show the public the reality they want them to see. In light of the Iraq war "intelligence" misinformation, we can see that nothing has changed. In fact, the stakes have gotten higher.
Was This Book "Privished?".......2002-08-08
Note that this review is 4 years after publication... four years of silence.
A book that tears the mask off the fraudulent "War on Drugs". It exposes the growth of the war from two (highly mutually destructive) agencies in 1971 (Customs and DEA) to 55 and counting. It describes very extensive, high-volume CIA involvement in smuggling itself to obtain unaccountable funding.
It documents the cost of the fraudulent war. In dollars misspent, in innocent lives lost through raids gone amok and witnesses silenced, in the credibility of government agencies and the news media, and in the harm resulting from the 5-fold increase (his figures) in drug usage during the time $1 trillion has been wasted in the fight.
Recommend finding this book used or in a library, or reading Levine's chapter in "Into the Buzzsaw" by Kristina Borjesson.
A true American hero........1999-01-27
I rank this book with "Dark Alliance" and "C.I.A.: Cocaine In America" as the most telling indictment of America's pseudo-war on drugs. Unlike most suthors who pontificate solutions from ivory towers and exhort stratagem with quill pens, Mr. Levine, not unlike Mr. VesBucci, for that matter, advises from hard-fought experience.
An excellent book written by a very courageous individual.......1998-06-16
Michael Levine is a former DEA agent who, throughout the 1980's, worked to uncover, expose and convict many of the leading suppliers of cocaine to the United States. Unfortunately for Levine, many of the most powerful cocaine dealers proved to be CIA assets, supported and even bankrolled by the American government in pursuit of shadowy foreign policy objectives. Levine's diligence in fighting the so-called "drugs war" brought him the ruination of his reputation within the DEA and ultimately the destruction of his career. The cynicism that Levine exposes within the highest levels of American government is breathtaking - and profoundly depressing.

/Deep in the Swamp/ is comprised of two parts. In the first part, charming rhymes introduce young children to the flora and fauna of a swamp. Each animal has a different number of babies, which allows children to practice counting as they move through the book. The second part is comprised of more expository discussions of the animals and plants from the first part, which should keep the attention of older children. The whole book is beautifully illustrated and captivated my two-year old.

Book Description
The time is the not-too-distant future. London is in ruins. A bombed-out shell. A picked-over carcass where the only rule of law is might makes right. What remains of the city is being fought over by two ruthless gangs of warlords. In an effort to create peace, however, a truce between the two families is suggested by Val, patriarch of the Volson clan. His collateral? The hand of his fourteen-year-old daughter, Signy, in marriage to his blood rival, Conor. A rebellious, headstrong teenager who has dreamed all her life of joining her father's forces as a soldier in the war against Conor, Signy is stunned by the announcement. To agree to such a plan is unthinkable! Conor is her mortal enemy. To live as his wife is no better than to live as a slave....for the rest of her life. But what of the alternative? Does she dare defy her father? And what of the consequences of her rebellion? Her decision will set in motion a series of events--events both horrifying and tragic--that will change her life forever.Melvin Burgess has fashioned a powerfully dystopian vision of a young woman's coming of age against the backdrop of war that is shocking, harrowing, and compelling.
Customer Reviews:
The grim future........2006-06-05
In a very grim but unspecified point in the future London, two warring families have finally come upon a kind of peace by marring of 14 year old Signy. But King Conor betreys her and her family and has all of them maimed or murdered. Brother Siggy is nearly killed but rescued and nursed back to health by a Menetaur. From there he forms a rebelluion against King Conor with the help of insane and crippled Queen Signy.
This is a very dark and brutal story with elements of revenge, incest, insanity, bad science and angry pagan gods. "Bloodtide" combines elements of other good stories; "The Terminator", Greek Myths, Iclandic Sagas, even the sword Excalibar makes an appearence.
It is the characters that really drive the story. Keep in mind there are no nice characters.Siggy and Signy are twins and are roughly the same; spoiled and selfish, only motovated to action when it suits them. King Conor is also ambitious and treatorous. In a way it is a very depressing novel, not offereing any hope for the future. Great if your into that kind of thing, and I was when I read it.
Scary, chilling and very very good.......2006-04-05
I've not previously read Melvin Burgess - I don't really know why. I've certainly read a lot about him and admire a children's writer who puts so many difficult and gritty issues into the headlines. Perhaps I didn't read him before because I was worried that he would be too issue-driven. Any way, finally, I've read one of his titles....
Bloodtide is utterly terrifyingly addictively readable and not a little shocking. I take my hat off repeatedly but also am somewhat mazed by the idea that any writer (even one as unflinching as Burgess clearly is) should think of the bloody and despoiling Icelandic sagas and find in them the inspiration for a children's book. Well - Burgess did and more power to him - as it springboards him into the most breathtaking showpiece. Bloodtide pecks vulture-like at almost every element of human emotion and gnaws wolf-hound style at the moral dimensions thrown onto the book's exceptionally violent battle ground. As you'd expect of a post-apocalyptic saga blood lust, ambition, greed, lies lay much of humanity to waste. A certain frisson is added by a bit of matricide here, some incest there, cloning, genetic engineering, oh you name it - but also some ill-fated trust and love.
Burgess plays with his characters - some mutant by dint of scientific tinkering, others mutated by simple human inhumanity - in an appropriately god-like fashion. And he plays his readers expertly too.
In short: I was gripped, sickened and exhilerated by bloodtide and think Burgess to be one of the most impressive writers I've encountered this year. I am positively jealous of his skill.
Bloodtide review.......2004-02-16
Bloodtide is a novel that will horrify ordinary readers, and make them feel quite disgust. However, the appalling plot of the novel is what made it so intriguing. The novel is unlike any other published works ever on Earth. I think the purpose of the novel is to portrait most of the human being¡¯s evil side of nature, and the unthinkable achievements. Throughout the novel, many morbid human nature are shown, such as hatred, vengeance, greed, and selfishness
The entire novel is about future London and the most important conflict between the two gangs that took over control of London. The two gangs have been fighting each other for many years over this parsimonious city with no real successes. Just when the leader of Volson (one of the groups) tried to appease the conflict and to unite London by betrothing his own daughter to his enemy¡¯s son; a dramatic twist occurred. One thing the Volson did not notice is that his nemesis is actually planning on something far more nefarious as ever¡
Bloodtide- A book to review........2003-10-22
Based on the Icelandic Volsunga Saga, this book has everything to keep you interested from beginning to end. The storyline keeps you thinking but the violence and gore keep you reading.
London is in ruins. But 2 families fight to keep their share and their power over the city. Val Volson, a high-rise gang lord who owns more than half. He is the leader of the Volsons and is one of the most powerful men of London. He has a 14-year-old daughter called Signy, her twin brother called Siggy and 2 other sons named Had and Ben. The family is very close and intend to keep it that way. Then in the red corner we have Conor, the owner of the rest of London. Between both the landlords many wars and fights have occurred. Until now. Val and Conor decide to make a treaty. This involves Signy, Val's daughter. She has to go and marry Conor , live with him and even fall in love. This can't seem possible, can it?
The main characters of the book are the twins, Signy and Siggy. We know this for certain because all the chapters are different characters point of view and many of them are named either Signy or Siggy. All of the characters ,human or not, are described thoroughly and give your imagination something to feed on. My favourite character is Cherry. She is a shape changer from the gods and helps the twins through their struggle. She is my favourite because instead describing her as one thing, she is a shape changer so she has many descriptions including a girl, a cat and a bird.
I would say this book is a thriller part horror. I think this because it deals with characters emotions and real issues but also imaginary evil that you expect to be in childrens nightmares. This novel is targeted at 15-18 year olds or maybe even older readers.
Instead of being written in 1st person all the way through, every different chapter is someone else's opinion and point of view. Melvin Burgess uses this technique in many of his books but I think it works especially well here.
I have read many of his books but overall this is my favourite. This is because it is one of a kind and the idea of realistic issues combined with impossible evil is great and very creative. The storyline is great, the descriptions are great and overall this book is great. I compliment Melvin Burgess for his unique writing skills and his creative and overactive imagination!
AMAZING.......2002-12-02
I do not want to ruin the story for all the people who had not read this book yet, so I'll be really brief.
This book is AWESOME.
Go and buy this masterpiece right now.

AWESOME.......2002-12-01
ok.......there is one thing i would like to say about this book. IT IS EXTREMELY SWEET. i have read many books in his series for example thunderbolt, sky fire, etc... This book follows the same format as many of his previous books in this series and always keeps you at the edge of your seat. If you are looking for and action-packed war novel this is the way to go. I have read almost no book better than any book in this series and i strongly advice you to check Cliff Garnett's, Talon Force.
