3 out of 5 stars Deep Freeze.......2007-09-02

This is a good book; however I didn't actually get into it until about the 15th chapter. I don't know what it was about this book, it seemed to have everything it needed but something was missing. And why does every character have a horrible tragedy in there past? You don't need to have something horrible happen to you to be a loner. About the epilogue, is there supposed to be another book? Why did it end like that? I do recommend this book though; just make sure you have patience to get to the good stuff.

3 out of 5 stars Average.......2006-12-02

This is my first Jackson book and it felt just average to me. Nothing to recommend it. The characters were written well. The characters had depth but something was missing. The side romance between Shane and Jenna seemed forced and lacking in chemistry and romance. Heres the scoop on the book:

Shane is the sheriff of this Oregon town where dead woman are showing up where other woman of there close town are going missing.

Jenna is a ex-hollywood actress who has come to this small town to raise her two girls away from the limelight. Jenna is sexy, beautiful, great bod and every mans fantasy. We know this because the author describes her in every format this way. Her daughters Cassie and Allie were the least likeable characters in the book. Spoiled, whinning, rude girls!

Jenna starts recieving phone calls, problems with her home, her private things going missing and so on. So she inlists the help of the town sheriff - Shane. The first time they met they did not hit if off. (He gave her a ticket for a broken taillight) Just because he was in a bad mood and she is a ex-hollywood actress. But anyways through this story there are supposed to be atttracted to each other, I did not feel that way while reading this. I felt the author through this on the side and it was sorely lacking in romance.

Then there is the suspense. Where was it? I was waiting and waiting to find out who did it and why and then was let down. Oh in the end you know the name of the guy who has been doing the kinllings but not why. Nothing about him about his reasons, no insight whatsoever. Disappointing. He's obsessed with Jenna Hughes but why her? Well you never figure that out.

Then there is the flashback to Shane's life in the past that he cannot get over. His friend Davids death and his wife Carolyn. There was no real understanding there to why the author wrote that in the story. It felt thrown in but never understading why. His friend David died while climbing and he has never forgiven himself? And Jennas sister getting killed on the set of a movie. It was mentioned over and over but no details. Don't mention something over and over without explaining. Then when Jenna finds photos of Caroyln in Shanes pocket after they had sex, he never explains and she never asks him to, she says she does'nt want to know. What woman would'nt want to know? Then they have a little argument and then the end Boom! Thats it, yes there was a epilogue but I felt things not being wrapped up very well.

5 out of 5 stars What a thriiling book.......2006-11-10

Just discovered this author. This book is the best thriiler I have ever read. I have read Stephen King and Dean Koontz but this author surpasses anything I have read.
I am looking forward to reading more of her books.

4 out of 5 stars Good Suspenseful Story.......2006-09-13

This was a good book. The story line has good twists and turns and held the reader's interest. There was a good level of creepiness to the story. It was nice to see a strong female character, rather than a stupid, whiney one.

I enjoyed this book. Worth reading!

Book Description

In Deep Freeze, Dian Olson Belanger tells the story of the pioneers who built viable communities, made vital scientific discoveries, and established Antarctica as a continent dedicated to peace and the pursuit of science, decades after the first explorers planted flags in the ice.

In the tense 1950s, even as the world was locked in the Cold War, U.S. scientists, maintained by the Navy's Operation Deep Freeze, came together in Antarctica with counterparts from eleven other countries to participate in the International Geophysical Year (IGY). On July 1, 1957, they began systematic, simultaneous scientific observations of the south-polar ice and atmosphere. Their collaborative success over eighteen months inspired the Antarctic Treaty of 1959, which formalized their peaceful pursuit of scientific knowledge. Still building on the achievements of the individuals and distrustful nations thrown together by the IGY from mutually wary military, scientific, and political cultures, science prospers today and peace endures.

The year 2007 will mark the fiftieth anniversary of the IGY and the commencement of a new International Polar Year—a compelling moment to review what a singular enterprise accomplished in a troubled time. Belanger draws from interviews, diaries, memoirs, and official records to weave together the first thorough study of the dawn of Antarctica's scientific age. Deep Freeze offers absorbing reading for those who have ventured onto Antarctic ice and those who dream of it, as well as historians, scientists, and policy makers.

2 out of 5 stars Accurate but Somewhat Boring.......2007-09-29

The author did a commendable job of accurately explaining--ad nauseam--how the US established a presence in Antarctica. However, I really wasn't interested in reading all the stuff about the logistics of getting there. While that may interest some people, I would have put it at the end of the book. However, I had to read over 300 pages before I got to the material of greatest interest to me--what it's like living there under horrendous winter conditions. The book is worth buying, but I recommend you start reading at Chapter 9.

5 out of 5 stars An Outstanding Institutional History of a Significant 20th Century Scientific Pursuit at the South Pole.......2007-02-22

This represents something of a personal recommendation for me, for it deals with a subject of special interest in my specific work as a space historian. The movement of America into Antarctica came with fits and starts in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, but it was because of the International Geophysical Year (IGY) in 1957-58--a broad scientific effort involving more than 60 nations--that the formal outposts so significant to current scientific efforts there were established. This same IGY led to the beginning of the space age, for the United States and the Soviet Union both agreed to launch scientific satellites as part of the effort. The Soviets, therefore, launched Sputnik 1 on Octover 4, 1957, ushering in the space age. No less important was the effort to understand the poles, and this is a very fine institutional history of the National Science Foundation's efforts to create and sustain the American foothold in Antarctica. It is based on extensive research in documentary sources, a good use of oral histories, and something for which I am most envious, field work at the pole.

5 out of 5 stars From someone who actually was in Deep Freeze.......2006-11-09

Deep Freeze is a terrific book about the IGY/Deep Freeze program and the beginning of the "modern" age of Antarctic exploration and research. It also provides the reader with a frame of reference many books omit: well-summarized information on the "heroic" age of exploration as well as a more contemporary perspective. With meticulous research and documentation, buttressed by oral histories and interviews, it was obviously a herculean task. It is extremely well written, with each
chapter's conclusion leaving you eager to read the next, smoothly and logically transitioning you along. I was particularly impressed with the candid descriptions about the behind-the-scenes events of which most Antarctic buffs would have little or no knowledge. The presentations on
Antarctic science were particularly well written (especially helpful for any layman). This book is nothing short of monumental, and a very important reference for all those interested in the coldest, windiest, emptiest, most remote and largest desert on earth. I'm buying several copies for my friends and family, because: (1) I've been there, done that, and got the Tshirt (several, actually), and (2) it will make a great Christmas present! Undoubtedly the finest non-fiction book I have read in the last decade.

Book Description

Yorkshire newspaper reporter Laura Ackroyd and DCI Michael Thackeray are finally trying their hand at living together after years of carrying on a tumultuous affair. Though they care deeply for one another, each seems to constantly have one foot out the door, reluctant to allow their personal relationship to interfere with intense professional ambitions that often conflict.

Neither is surprised when their new domesticity proves complicated as they end up investigating the same controversial case---the fatal shooting of a young teenager outside a women’s health center and abortion clinic in town. Tensions in Yorkshire are running high anyway, because the tragedy coincides with the visit of a notorious American right-to-lifer, and the vicious murder adds fuel to an already out of control fire.

Ackroyd and Thackeray must use their vastly different investigation styles to find the truth about what happened to the young victim, and before they are finished they just might be forced to work more closely together than they ever have before.

Patricia Hall’s Yorkshire mysteries are highly praised both for her intricate and authentic procedural style and for the engaging and complicated relationship between Ackroyd and Thackeray. In Deep Freeze, Hall once again delivers a tense, emotionally involving, superbly plotted, and suspenseful mystery.

5 out of 5 stars Wow! Why didn't I know about this author before.......2006-05-19

This series is new to me. I read one by chance and have quickly sought out more and enjoyed them all. Solid police procedural, but in addition, Hall has a great eye and ear for the nuances of human culture and social stratification in a medium-sized town. Her characters are well-developed and believable, the plot is well paced and in general, makes for a truly enjoyable read.

4 out of 5 stars Gotta love Laura...........2003-01-23

Patricia Hall's latest novel about Yorkshire newspaper reporter Laura Ackroyd (apparently a Nicole Kidman lookalike) and her friend DCI Michael Thackery takes a sad turn in DEEP FREEZE. Hall has never shied away from tough subjects (she probably covered them as a reporter) and her latest novel continues this trend.

A young girl named Dana Smith is shot dead as she leaves the hospital where she recently had an abortion. Was she killed by an aggressive member of the anti-abortionist crowd badgering the clinic daily? Was her death simply another aspect of the crime wave being carried out against her gypsy family by local skinheads? Or, did her death have something to do with the fertility work underway at the clinic? Laura is a female reporter and thus never asked to write the "crime" story by her male chauvinist editor, but she soon turns her "woman's" piece into an investigation of suspicious medical practices, antagonistic anti-abortion activists, and unhappy ex-wives. Meanwhile, boyfriend Thackery has his own clues to pursue and his own ghosts to fight.

I have read Hall's books from the gitgo, I find her protagonists Laura and Thackery well developed. Hall also does a fine job of developing minor characters such as feisty grandmother Joyce Ackroyd, who turns up regularly to protest outrages against women; Val Ridley, the blonde cop who lusts after Kevin Mower her counterpart on the Bradford police force; and Kevin Mower who seems to be going off the deep end over his recent losses. To truly appreciate this series, including the current angst Mower is feeling, the reader should begin at the beginning. Reading Hall's books is akin following a good police/reporter series on tv. Hall is not into forensics, nor does she do graphic violence. Her plots are clever and her characterization is well done. This is exactly the kind of book her Grandmother Joyce would enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars strong British police procedural.......2003-01-18

Deputy Chief inspector Michael Thackeray has finally taken the first stops towards making a new life with his lover Laura Ackroyd. He has filed for divorce from a wife who is confined to a mental institution with no hope of recovery, and he and Laura have moved in to a flat together. Although Laura would like a child with Michael, she dare not bring the subject up since he has never recovered from the tragic death of his own son.

When a thirteen year old girl is shot and killed on the steps of the May Anderson hospital after receiving an abortion, Michael and Laura both work the case albeit from different perspectives. When a nurse who works at the hospital is also killed, the police know there's a link because the same gun killed the two victims. Using their own resources, Laura and Michael come to the same conclusion about who the killer might be, but proving it to the point of an arrest remains difficult.

Patricia Hall writes some of the best British police procedurals on the market today. Her two protagonist are very independent individuals trying to make a life together while trying to cope with the baggage of their past. The who-done-it it is intricately complex with so many blind allies that readers will want to finish the book in one sitting to learn the identity of the perpetrator.

4 out of 5 stars Well, I had a good time.......2007-01-15

I don't know about the reviewers who were so upset by this book; I wasn't expecting Joan Didion. I got a solid thriller with a premise that seemed pretty ridiculous (well, that is intil this weekend when the lows in LA hit the low 30's). Is it slightly silly? Sure. But it's also a great big bon-bon of a book that I defy you to not consume in one sitting. Like one of the better disaster movies of the 70's, you may have a few minutes of "well that couldn't possibly happen!" moments afterward.

Then again if we were having precipitation in Los Angeles this weekend it would be snow....

4 out of 5 stars Praise for Deep Freeze.......2005-10-24

This was my first experience reading Thom Racina. I picked it up at Sam's because it looked interesting. I read Deep Freeze within about 3 days, and was happy with it. With the recent weather problems around the world, the story is somewhat believeable. I enjoyed reading this book, and may check out his other books. I know some others give him bad reviews, but I do not judge a book by reviews or by it's "movie potential". For me, if it is a good story and written well enough that I do not notice any errors or screwups, then I am happy with it. I would reccomend this book to anyone as it is a good story with decent characters.

1 out of 5 stars Absolutely Horrible Writing.......2005-09-30

Even reviewing this bomb seems somewhat pointless! However, it was so bad that I just felt it my duty, as a avid reader, to warn people off from this atrocity. Deep Freeze held my attention (barely) for maybe twenty pages before I knew it was going to be a collosal groaner. The writing is...well...surprising for a multi-book published author. To call it plodding would be generous in the extreme. The characters are paper thin and BORING! The author seems to realize this and gives almost no effort to developing the absymal cast. Sometimes a great story can save bad characters but not in this case. Let's put it this way, if you are stuck on a desert island with the options of counting sand or reading this book...count the sand!

One other thing...I noticed that Amazon's # 1 reviewer gave this book a 5 star rating. Hmmmmm?

1 out of 5 stars Pointless and Boring.......2005-08-20

I just finished reading Deep Freeze and what a disappointment. It was 366 pages of...well, nothing I guess. After reading about 50 pages of people describing the snow coming down I felt like saying, "enough already, get on with the story!" And that was the problem, the story never really progressed beyond that point.
The only character I even remotely cheered for was the "bad" son. He was the only one who had even a little bit of depth to him. The other characters were flat and dull.
Finally, I still don't get the whole radical faction aspect of the novel. It didn't come into play to any great extent like you're led to believe on the back cover and basically was a minor distraction while reading at best.
Save your money and go purchase a novel by Rick Mofina if you want well developed characters, great story lines and suspense.

5 out of 5 stars Irwin Allen would be proud..........2005-08-15

Veteran soap & thriller writer Racina combines the best of both his worlds wth this juicy read, perfect for vacation or a long plane trip. He imagines the City of Angels undergoing a "deep freeze" and all the disasterous consequences that would follow---of course, complicated by various sublots with an assortment of colorful characters.

He knows L.A. and he knows showbiz, so he is particularly good with his characterizations and dialogue. It also helps that he penned the famous "Ice Princess" storyline in GENERAL HOSPITAL's heyday, so he's more than familiar with what happens when a metropolis undergoes a meteorological snafu!

Lots of fun to add to your beach bag or summer cottage library collection!

Book Description

-- Url Lanham, Professor of Natural History and Curator in the Museum, University of Colorado

How does bison meat taste after being frozen for 30,000 years? Were Ice Age cave painters trying to create "art" or just record history? How did ancient oil spills occur, before there were oil companies to create them? Those are just some of the questions renowned paleontologist Bjorn Kurten answers in this collection of lighthearted essays on fossils, ancient life, and related topics. Written for the general reader, these lively pieces range from a look at how scientific theories are created to some new views of old myths. Among the topics Kurten examines are the history of the Mediterranean Sea, the origin of birds, the theory of plate tectonics (continental drift), and the discovery of Piltdown Man, the "missing link" fossil forgery that fooled scientists for more than 40 years.

And, true to its title, the book offers a humorous "recipe" for freezing a mammoth that is tundra-tested, if not totally foolproof. "You may have to expend a few hundred mammoths before everything works out," the reader is cautioned, "But there are plenty of them." (Although the author hasn't tasted the fruits of his mammoth recipe, he did feast on some ancient bison meat that dated from 30,000 years ago. Kurten described the taste as "agreeable.")

Throughout these essays Kurten brings the prehistoric world alive with enthusiasm and humor, emphasizing that paleontology is the study of those that lived long ago instead of those who are long dead. As he says, "Isn't it more fun to see a dinosaur as something that used to live, rather than as the monstrous heap of bones which it happens to be at present?"

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great collection of popular science essays .......2005-05-26

_How To Deep-Freeze a Mammoth_ by Bjorn Kurten is a collection of fourteen essays of about four to ten pages each. Most of the essays in the book were originally published in a Swedish version, which were then translated by Erik H. Friis, and then rewritten, updated, and expanded for this book by the author (the Swedish version is copyright 1981, while this work is copyright 1986). A number of black and white drawings by Hubert Pepper accompany the book. The book is 117 pages long and was a quick read; I read it in a day.

A rather enjoyable, for the most part easy to read book, the first four essays dealt with the author's opinions about the world of science as a whole, contrasting it with the world of pseudoscience. Along the way Kurten attacked some of the more egregious examples of pseudoscience, such as several Nazi "scientists", the Soviet "geneticist" Trofim Lysenko, Creationism (which he dealt with only very briefly), and the Swedish writer Ivan Troeng, who wrote a book claiming that the moon originated in the Pacific Ocean 11,800 years ago as a result of collision between the Earth and a smaller celestial body. Kurten disliked the fact that pseudoscientists point to individuals who truly revolutionized their fields, like Darwin, Mendel, and Galileo, and when the pseudoscientists offer their revolutionary ideas and are rejected by mainstream science, claim that they are being persecuted just as these individuals were (Kurten asserted that simply so much more is known that a true and utter revolution is just not possible anymore). Additionally, Kurten pointed out that the pseudoscientist sets out to prove something; he or she has a preconceived notion of what really exists, and unlike a real scientist his or her mind is closed to alternative possibilities. By way of contrast Kurten provided an example of a successful revolution, of a theory that was met with a lot of skepticism at first but was later accepted, that of plate tectonics.

The remaining chapters dealt more specifically with issues and ideas in paleontology, with essays on the geological and paleontological history of the Mediterranean Sea (which I thought was a bit too brief), ancient natural oil spills, the science and politics of _Archaeopteryx_, the process whereby mammoths and other Pleistocene mammals were preserved more or less intact, and the first Europeans (I found that chapter a bit technical).

One of my favorite chapters dealt with an unusual 20 million year old fossil, that of a Miocene rhinoceros of the genus _Diceratherium_, discovered in 1935 in Grant County, Washington state. The fossil was found by hikers, who thought at first that they had found a very odd cave with some bone fragments. Upon investigation it was discovered that the cave was a mold of an extinct rhinoceros, one apparently formed when flowing lava engulfed the (apparently bloated) carcass of the animal, a mold not unlike those found at Pompeii. Kurten discussed how the lava was able to preserve this form without igniting the body and what was learned from the fossil (the wrinkles and folds of the skin were even preserved).

Another chapter I enjoyed was one on Piltdown Man, without a doubt the most famous forgery in the history of paleontology (if not science as a whole). Not particularly familiar with this history of this controversy, it was interesting to learn that even when the fossil was first produced it was not immediately accepted. "Dualists" believed that the braincase belong to a man and the lower jaw to that of an ape, while "monists," who believed it, pointed out that no anthropoid ape was known from Pleistocene Europe and that teeth were worn down in the same way as found in humans. Even after the famous second Piltdown "discovery" ("Piltdown II") and before the specimen was dated using fluorine content, there were problems accepting the Piltdown Man as real; originally it was thought in hominids that the brain evolved first, then the teeth and jaws, but instead _Australopithecus_ proved that this was just the opposite, that it had human-like teeth but a brain closer to that of an ape. Piltdown Man just didn't fit in. Kurten in the end debunked every find associated with Piltdown Man, even the idea that the fossils could have been found there in the first place; it was later shown that the chemical properties of the Piltdown gravel were not conducive to fossil formation and preservation.

Another interesting chapter dealt with Neandertals. Kurten speculated that the prominent eyebrow ridges had evolved to give the Neandertals an intimidating glare, a threatening glance to frighten other organisms, a feature not unlike the false eyes developed by some defenseless animals such as several butterfly species.

The chapter on cave art was excellent and was accompanied by a number of illustrations. Kurten mentioned in passing that the larva of a gadfly is one of the animals found represented in a particular cave; a small figurine made from jet of a larvae was discovered. This may have represented one of the animals eaten by man at the time, as these larvae, which are found inside the skin of reindeer, are a delicacy among modern Inuit. Kurten discussed the role cave art played and discussed their possible religious and magical purposes (briefly mentioning that the term cave art may be a misnomer, that likely the late Pleistocene landscape was "studded with pictures" not unlike highway billboards, with art placed on rock walls, tree trunks, and boulders). Kurten favored the notion that it may have been used for instructional purpose for children, noting that the animals were often rendered with very precise detail, so precise that it took zoologists to notice it (for instance animals clearly in heat were depicted), and that it was produced for its own enjoyment (noting the many very erotic depictions of women, something generally passed over in popular surveys, a few of which were produced here and are not for kids).

2 out of 5 stars For juvenile readers only.......2006-11-10

In my early teens I devoured the Hardy Boys series. Recently I reread one of them : how simple and predictable it was! So too with this story. Likely it will appeal to those on a seventh grade reading level, where descriptive writing, basic character development, a creative plot, and an attentive editor's red pen are secondary to simple action. The writer seems to have just plowed along with his tale, and whenever he ran into an intractable situation he'd just pull out another Deus Ex Machina to resolve matters. I mean, who put that first saddle on Esteron?

If improbable happenstance jars you, avoid this book. If you're uncritical in your reading and like your fantasies quick and easy, enjoy!

1 out of 5 stars This is not good........2004-12-22

I should qualify my title. I liked this trilogy while in my early twenties. Over a decade later I go back to find a great concept poorly executed. There is next to no description, the character names and dialogue are infantile, and each event in the story is predictable. I think Jefferies has envisioned an interesting reality here, but he hasn't translated it very well. I really want to like this book (and the trilogy), but I can't. Just the grammar and punctuation errors make me want to scream.

            2 out of 5 stars Very ultra-traditionalist.......2004-02-26

It's basically a good book if you like traditionalist fantasy. But I give it only two stars because the characters seem more like archetypes than real flesh and blood people (The Wizard, The Chancellor, The King, The Lady in Distress, etc.) For a good read for me, the book would've had to have at least one good and decent Chancellor, and at least one bad and greedy Hand ;-)

5 out of 5 stars Only series to keep my attention.......2003-05-05

I read this series about 8 years ago, and it was amazing. These books have been the only ones thus far to keep me on edge and into it. I dont care to read, but these were well worth reading twice. Would highly recomend the series to anyone.

            4 out of 5 stars A Brilliant Read.......2001-10-01

I think what the reviewers who rated this book poorly, calling it 'dull & uncaptivating' & 'dont waste your time' are forgetting is that this books is meant for readers U16. The hero is a child, and if you're a child who reads this book, it is simply amazing: There's pretty graphic magic & action sequences, hero's, villians, treachery & love. And a boy who, against all odds (with the aid of friends) becomes all he can be & leads the fight against evil. I read this book when I was 14. It was amazing. Much better (at that age) than Tolkien, who I thought spent too much time describing the countryside than advancing his plot. For children, this should be next in line after Harry Potter.
