Book Description

Following the tremendous success of Cross Bones, Kathy Reichs explores another high-profile topic in Break No Bones -- a case that lands forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan in the middle of a gruesome international scheme.

Summoned to South Carolina to fill in for a negligent colleague, Tempe is stuck teaching a lackluster archaeology field school in the ruins of a Native American burial ground on the Charleston shore. But when Tempe stumbles upon a fresh skeleton among the ancient bones, her old friend Emma Rousseau, the local coroner, persuades her to stay on and help with the investigation. When Emma reveals a disturbing secret, it becomes more important than ever for Tempe to help her friend close the case.

The body count begins to climb. An unidentified man is found hanging from a tree deep in the woods. Another corpse shows up in a barrel. There are mysterious nicks on bones in several bodies, and signs of strangulation. Tempe follows the trail to a free street clinic with a belligerent staff, a suspicious doctor, and a donor who is a charismatic televangelist. Clues abound in the most unlikely places as Tempe uses her unique knowledge and skills to build her case, even as the local sheriff remains dubious and her own life is threatened.

Tempe's love life is also complicated. Ryan, her current flame, has come down to visit her from Montreal, and Pete, her former husband, is investigating the disappearance of a local woman -- and he and Tempe are staying in the same borrowed beach house. Ryan and Pete compete for her attentions, and Tempe finds herself more distracted by her feelings for both men than she expected.

Break No Bones is a smart, taut thriller featuring the kind of high-stakes crime that makes the headlines every week. Reichs, the inspiration for the hit FOX TV show Bones, is writing at the top of her form, and Tempe has never been more compelling.

3 out of 5 stars A bone to pick.......2007-10-03

While I generally enjoy the Tempe books - and this is overall no exception - this is not my favorite of the series. Tempe is again undecided and scattered through half the book - does she love Pete or does she love Ryan? Is the guilty party Marshall or Daniels or someone else altogether? She's constantly "all in a froth" and "agitated," seemingly forgetful of the fact that she is not a member of the police force and should therefore, perhaps, simply give them the information she is aware of and then stay out of their way. Then again, that would make for a pretty dull book :-) However, I just don't care for the way Tempe is presented in this book - she is entirely too excitable overall and that state of mind seemingly has been transferred onto Andy Ryan as well.

However, the irrepressible Pete is as entertaining as ever and the sub-plot about Emma and her battle with non-Hodgkins Lymphoma is just heart-rending. The actual mystery - what happened to the people who had been killed and the mysterious fracture of only their 6th cervical vertebrae - is great also and keeps you guessing almost to the very end. Overall, I can recommend this to fans of the Reichs' series, as well as fans of the genre of forensic thrillers, as that aspect of the book is fabulous.

Although not my favorite book by this author, it was still very good. In general, I really enjoy this author and would highly recommend any of her books.

3 out of 5 stars Good but flawed........2007-09-30

This entry in the Brennan series is much better than the disasterous Cross Bones. The plot is good and kept me guessing. BUT... as Kirkman correctly pointed out in a previous review coroners do not do autopsies. This isn't a trivial error. Also, one of the bodies in the book has been hung. But the head has falled off. OK - the human head isn't attached to the rest of the body by bone, but only by muscles and ligaments. But the rest of the body is still hanging from the noose. What's keeping it there??? In reality the rest of the body would have fallen when the head fell off. This is a stupid error for Reichs to make.

3 out of 5 stars I'll give it 3 1/2 stars.......2007-09-27

This episode has Tempe Brennan in South Carolina filling in as a teacher at an archeology field school. But she and her students find a recent burial among the Native Indian burials. She's asked to stay in Charleston because the coroner there (who's also Tempe's friend) is ill. Soon another body is found hanging in the forest, and then another washes up in a barrel. Of course, Tempe can't keep her nose out of it and gets involved finding out why these people died, who did it and why. And during this week, she's sharing a friend's home with her estranged husband and her boyfriend. Yeah, right...like that would happen...this IS fiction.

This is a good book for a plane ride or rainy day. And, of course, there's plenty of fodder for the next book.

1 out of 5 stars Coroners do not perform autopsies .......2007-09-27

The entire premise of this book is incorrect. Charleston County has both a coroner and medical examiner system (forensic pathology). The office of the medical examiner would have been involved from the beginning, since the two offices work closely together. To think that an out-of-state anthropologist would be given free rein to evaluate the remains, including having the bones stripped without an autopsy first, is preposterous. She was not a physician, let alone licensed, credentialed and privileged to practice forensic pathology in SC. She may have been invited to consult because of her forensic bone expertise but she would never have been permitted to do what was chronicled.

I trained at MUSC and practiced in Charleston. And I could not believe what I was reading. Ms. Reichs had done her Charleston research well in terms of locations, restaurants and attractions (although two of the plants she listed I had never heard of and I lived there 20 years), but not about the coroner/medical examiner system, which was the crux of the story. I struggled with whether or not to finish the book because I was so incredulous. But I did.

I had read several of her other books and liked them, so I picked this one up at the airport. I thought she had some really great similes and metaphors, but by and large I found her writing self-conscious and superficial. I agree with the reviewers about the lack of character development and the situation with the dueling suitors was a bit far fetched. There was a lot of filler, such as (paraphrased), "I opened my Dell, booted it up, watched the blue screen and got online." I do not know why she had to refer to Boyd as "the chow" over and over. The "twirly eyebrows" got old, too. There were factual errors; veins don't pulse, arteries do. Writing "scrips" instead of "scripts," as an abbreviation for prescriptions. I expected someone in the medical field to know better. I, too, thought the plot was disorganized and strained credulity.

Perhaps I am being too martinetish about the details; probably because I was so off-put by the incorrect framework.

That having been said, I thought she shone when discussing technical aspects and I enjoyed those parts. I also learned that killing people to sell their bodies is called "Burking, "after a Scotsman, William Burke, in the 1820s.

I am giving it a one because of the factual inaccuracy; were it not for that I would have given it a two--it is just not as well written as her others.

    Product Description

Readers of Kathy Reichs's cool and clever first forensic thriller Déjà Dead will recognize the ironic voice of Tempe (short for Temperance) Brennan, the North Carolina-born scientist who winds up working at the Laboratoire de Médicine Légale in Montreal. Here she bristles at the conservative attitudes of some of her Canadian colleagues. Despite the cold weather, Tempe's workload quickly becomes heavy: the bones of a long-dead nun now up for sainthood have been moved and tampered with; a deadly house fire turns out to be arson; and a university teaching assistant disappears after joining a cult. Tempe must figure out where (and why) all the bodies are buried in the hard Canadian ground. Her investigations take her home to North Carolina, and to a strange colony living on an offshore island. Unlike certain other writers who specialize in forensic pathology, Reichs doesn't revel in the horror of death or rub our noses in gore: she uses the science of death to reveal rather than to shock or startle. It definitely makes for easier reading--especially at mealtimes.

I was asked to read this book as part of my training program as an art therapist a few years ago and I fell in love with it. It's as relevant to me today, as I am making my first steps in the field. It focusses on the existential angle of art therapy and is full of dialogues with patients and study cases , brought in an informal way. Mr. Moon is first and foremost an equal human being and only then an art therapist. He includes reference to his own journey as reflected through his own creative process. I will end with a quote: "Creation does not ease but rather ennobles the pain."

    5 out of 5 stars I love it.......2004-04-16

I read this book over a year ago, but i still remember can remeber how much i enjoyed reading it.
This novel is different from most fantasy novels in that the main characters have very little control on what happens around them or even control over their own fate. although extraordinary on their own, Karan and Llian are small in comparison to Faellamor, Rulke, Tensor and Mendark. They are pulled back and forth and are tangled in a deadly game where the entire world is at stake.
one thing i liked about this series is the way that your opinion of the characters changes dramatically over the length of the series. those people that seemed noble and good turn out to be the most evil characters of all and the most evil characters the most noble. It blurs the black and white lines between good and evil that are normally so sharp in fantasy novels.
This sets this series apart from others, it is unique in many ways and not as cliched as many fantasy novels are prone to be.

    3 out of 5 stars A question of trust........2003-05-18

I am really going up and down about this series. I found the first book lukewarm, while reading the second book interested me enough to run out immediately and buy the third. However, now that I have read the third I have to confess to feeling a little bit let down.

The two main characters, Llian and Karan, spend most of the book stressing out about whether they trust each other. Somehow, this point is more important than the lives of their friends or the fate of the world. I have to say that I still find Karan one of the more remarkably unlikeable female leads in recent fantasy. I sincerely hope that in the 4th book, they get a therapist offline and the rest of the book can continue without further whining.

That said, the adventure *does* continue and other of the characters become more interesting. I like very much the direction Rulke is taking and I am curious to hear more about him.

Not a terrible read, just not a great one.

This is the third book in The View from the Mirror tetralogy (after A Shadow on the Glass and The Tower on the Rift, and before The Way Between the Worlds).

Dark Is the Moon starts in the tower of Katazza, where Tensor has just opened a gate to the Nightland. In the process, Rulke the Charon has managed to escape from his imprisonment of a thousand years, while Karan and Llian have been sucked throught the gate. Mendark, Malien, Tallia and Yggur have to overcome their differences and ally against their common enemy and try to use the power of the Rift to seal the Nightland. Karan and Llian's lives are at stake.

And so in the Nightland, Karan and Llian have no choice but to team with Rulke, or they'll be trapped forever. But in the battle, the new alliance draws to much power from the Rift and Katazza collapses over them. Thanks to that diversion, Karan manages to escape throught the gate and lands in the rubble of the destroyed citadel. However, Llian is still stuck with Rulke, who compels him to tell the Histories but finally lets him go five days later. When with Karan they catch up with Yggur, Mendark, Shand and the others, everyone suspects he's become Rulke's spy.

After crossing the Dry Sea again, the group realizes that their only chance to beat Rulke is to make a replica of the golden Flute, a legendary artifact that is said to have the power to open the Way between the Worlds. But for this they need Aachan red gold, which is extremely rare, and information on how to use the instrument.

In this thrid volume, all roads diverge, to converge again at the end for another confrontation: Mendark sets off to Havissard in search of the gold, Yggur goes back to Thurkad where his army is at war, Tallia and Shand go look for young Lilis's father, and Karan wants to go back to her estate in Gothryme to see how her people are faring. Llian accompanies her, and on the way they stop in Chanthed, where lies the College of the Histories, and where he thinks he might gather new information for his Great Tale.

In the meantime Faellamor, with the help of her always faithful Maigraith, is searching for a way to break the Forbidding and tries to link with fher far away kin, the Faellem, and ask them for help. They manage to open a gate to Havissard.

Dark is the Moon is of the same quality as the previous books in the series, that is, full of entertaining adventures and well written, but nothing outstanding, although the characters have started to grow in depth, and me to consider reading Ian Irvine's next series, The Well of Echoes. But on to the fourth and final volume first.

I decided to buy this Mirror-Image field map because I have a Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope that also reverses viewed objects. I already had the true-image field map, but I had a lot of difficulty using it because I'm a novice of lunar topography. The reverse map made such a difference in my ability to see and identify landmarks. The map is laminated and folded, separating the moon into four quadrants. This makes it easy to handle and use without worrying about nighttime dew. I took it to an astonomy club star party, and showed several experienced amateurs. None had ever seen this particular map before. It got rave reviews from them too.

    Book Description

Alone after his mother’s death, homeless in a Minnesota winter, young Gordon struggled to stay in school, working at menial jobs and riding streetcars all night to escape the cold. Refusing to succumb to despair, he instead transformed his anger at poverty and racism into a creative force and went on to break down one barrier after another. He was the first black photographer at Vogue and Life, and the first black screenwriter and director in Hollywood, at the helm of such projects as the award-winning Shaft. And his novel, The Learning Tree, has sold more than a quarter of a million copies.

Spanning the major events of five decades, Voices in the Mirror takes readers from Minnesota and Washington, D.C., to the glamour of Paris and the ghettos of Rio and Harlem. His intimate portrayals of Ingrid Bergman and Roberto Rossellini; of the Muslim and African American icons Malcolm X, Elijah Muhammad and Muhammad Ali; of the young militants of the civil rights and black power movements; and of the tragic experiences of the less famous, like the Brazilian youngster Flavio, combine to form an unforgettable story.

Gordon Parks’s life is a metaphor for the courageous vision and extraordinary resilience of the African American community, while also serving as a testament to the spirit and generosity that are its hallmarks.

I'm surprised that this book has not gained more notarity. I am an admirer of Gordon Parks. His story is one of inspiration and challenge. An imperfect man who maximized his potential. Gordon Parks is an American Icon. Author, composer, photographer, and mentor his life is simply amazing. From being proclaimed dead at birth to succeeding at everything he touched; his life embodies hope and aspiration.

5 out of 5 stars Look in the mirror.......2006-05-07

This book is full of life lessons and was told by a man who had plenty of experience to tell them. He speaks about his upbringing, which was humbling to say the least. He tells about the first camera he ever purchased. Not having much experience at all, he took some shots, and the rest was history from that standpoint. He was always humble, and just enjoyed doing the things he loved: photography, literature, and music. He made the most of his opportunities when he was given them. His undying love and support for the poor and the less fortunate is well-chronicled, and his loyalty to fellow Blacks at the harshest of times put him in very compromising situations, but he was always able to adapt, sympathize, and relate to his subjects, and it showed in all of his work. He never compromised his beliefs for personal gain, and he was widely respected for it. This book is a reminder to all who may give up on hoping, dreaming, and staying positive. It's a reminder that life is full of twists and turns, hills and mountains. If you stick it out, the sky's the limit. He is an inspiration to all.

    4 out of 5 stars Picturesque Testament.......2005-11-17

I enjoy reading about a person's life and IN VOICES IN THE MIRROR, the autobiography of Gordon Parks, I found his story interesting, edifying and at times inspirational. Mr. Parks was born into a life where the world made differences in people based on the color of their skin and not their character. However, instead of using their biases as a crutch to not succeed, he worked hard to make his dreams come to fruition.

Mr. Park's life spans many decades, wars and social climates in America. At age 15, he was homeless and living a depressing existence. He worked menial jobs to survive. He persevered and went from working on the railroad to being the first African-American photographer for Life and Vogue magazines. His life's adventures took him all over the world to cover some of the most politically disturbed countries, America's civil right's struggles, as well as Third World areas where poverty was rampant, all which were captured for posterity with his camera. He also composed a musical concerto, wrote books and penned poetry. His first novel, The Learning Tree was made into a motion picture, where he was the director and executive producer, which was an unknown anomaly during this period of time. Let's not forget he was the director of Shaft. His stories and pictures touched the hearts of many Americans, and during his life he received many accolades for what he enjoyed doing. So from the dirt roads of Kansas, Mr. Parks graduated from the school of hard knocks but lived a life that is and was so illustrious, fulfilling and awe-inspiring.

This autobiography presents itself as an honest rendition of Mr. Park's life. He tells his story eloquently and allows readers to feel the emotions he was experiencing in each particular time of his life. He tells readers how powerful a picture can be and the pictures interspersed throughout are a testament to this truth. Readers get a glimpse into his marriages, children and even grandchildren and he shows us he is fallible as well. I truly enjoyed every aspect of this autobiography from the private conversations with Malcolm X and Muhammad Ali; to showing the people in his hometown he indeed was successful, because his life is a history lesson. He made great strides for African-Americans, and no matter how angry and depressed with the situations he faced, he continued to move forward. When the final door shuts on his life, his legacy will always remain.

    4 out of 5 stars AN ADVENTURE.......2001-02-19

Never before have I read a book with such honesty flowing off the pages. As Gordon Parks talks about his life from a young boy to a man you can feel everything he is going through. He doen't hide his feelings and lets you know how he felt at certain times in his life. When he talks about the hate he saw growing up and how he felt about white men, you can sence what it must have been like for him to challenge the odds and become one of the most powerful photographers of his time. Another thing that real made this book powerful was when he talked about his time as a Photo journalist for Time, having to tell people everything through the voice of a journalist and not an activist. He also makes the clear point that pictures speak louder than words. He remarks many times that he used his camera when others like red jackson used a gun. The camera is a powerful weapon in the right hands. If you have ever seen an of Gordon Parks's work or seen his movies, you will enjoy this book. It is a personal glimps in to the life of the man behind the camera.

    3 out of 5 stars Moon Mirror.......2000-05-16

This is a collection of short stories. They each have a different theme but the common thread of the book is that what starts out to be a disaster or problem ends up being the best thing to happen to that person. This is a good book for the young adult but as an older person I found it a bit boring.

5 out of 5 stars fantastic magical urban fantasy .......2007-09-04

She is a Warrior of the Celestial Blade and bound magically to the imp Scrap. Her job is to make sure that demons don't enter this plane through portals and if they do, she has to send them back to their own realm. Her morning gets off to a bad start when her friend Allie the police officer calls her and tells she saw a young woman emerge from empty space and is being chased by garden gnomes with sharp teeth.

As Tess Noncoire goes to fix the problems, she thinks it is unfair because just before this assignment she fought against a Wendigo who wants revenge because Tess killed her mate. She discovers the woman is WindScribe, a witch who disappeared to faery with eleven other witches thirty years ago. She committed a crime in Fairy and King Scazz of the Orculli gnomes seeks to imprison her once again. In addition to dealing with a vengeful witch wanted by the Powers That Be; Tess's husband's ghost is haunting her, she has to hold Donovan at arms length because though he is not a demon, he is something else. She also has to worry about her mother when Darren, Donovan's demonic father marries her mother, needs a refuge for half demons and wants something that Tess owns.

MOON IN THE MIRROR is a fantastic magical urban fantasy in which the forces of good battle different evil beings in a series of high noon confrontations. Tess is a strong woman who although is tempted by Donovan and the ghost of her beloved she has the will power to resist temptation especially when the beings involved may be tainted by demonic forces. The biggest mystery is what Donavan's foster father's plan is and how will it impact the human race.

        Book Description

This collection of 106 poems by 44 female Tang-era poets is the most comprehensive of its kind. Poets are organized based on their status in Tang dynasty society: women of the court, women of the household, courtesans and entertainers, and women of religion. While each poet's concerns vary with their social status, common thematic threads include heartbreak and the mysteries of the natural world. Thumbnail biographies of each poet and notes regarding individual poems complete this important collection.

Jeanne Larsen has published poetry, three novels set in China, and a book of poetry translation, Brocade River Poems: Selected Works of the Tang Dynasty Courtesan Xue Tao. She teaches in the creative writing program at Hollins University in Roanoke, Virginia.

        Customer Reviews:

        5 out of 5 stars Incredible.......2006-09-02

What Ms. Larsen began in "Brocade River Poems: Selected Work of the Tang Dynasty Courtesan Xue Tao" continues in this wonderful, slim and accessible volume. There is so much more to Tang Dynasty poetry then Li Po and Du Fu, as enjoyable as they are. Ms. Larsen's translations and exegesis of the poems of some of the female poets of the late Tang and Early Sung illustrate the humor, the depth' in fact the whole emotional range that poetry has the power to offer.

        5 out of 5 stars Couldn't be better........2005-12-02

Such an interesting collection. These poems are beautifully translated. Jeanne Larsen is a genius.
