When a U.S. Marine is killed in Bangkok, the task of finding the murderer falls to Detective Sonchai Jitpleecheep, seemingly the only member of the Royal Thai Police Force whose idea of justice precludes his fellow officers' customary system of bribery. This assignment's especially important to the devout detective for during the investigation of the murder scene, the methamphetamine-stoked snakes that bit the marine also kill Sonchai's police partner, best friend, and Buddhist soul-mate Pichai. Sonchai's pursuit of revenge will team him with a sexually frustrated FBI agent and leave them at the mercy of yaa-baa-fueled motorcycle-taxi drivers as they hurtle through neon-lit Bangkok and into the labyrinthine and deadly machinations of the international jade and drug trades in search of the killer.

As Sonchai himself notes at one point, "This isn't a whodunit, is it?" And, no, it isn't, but author John Burdett (A Personal History of Thirst, The Last Six Million Seconds) infuses the plot with enough suspense, detail, and dry Asian insight to keep readers rapt as the story careens about the bars and brothels of Thailand's flesh trade, through its cut-rate plastic surgery parlors, and ends in a climax with a fittingly Buddhist twist. Bangkok 8 is highly recommended for readers in the mood for Thai. --Benjamin Reese

Book Description

A thriller with attitude to spare, Bangkok 8 is a sexy, razor-edged, often darkly hilarious novel set in one of the world’s most exotic cities.

Witnessed by a throng of gaping spectators, a charismatic Marine sergeant is murdered under a Bangkok bridge inside a bolted-shut Mercedes Benz. Among the witnesses are the only two cops in the city not on the take, but within moments one is murdered and his partner, Sonchai Jitpleecheep—a devout Buddhist and the son of a Thai bar girl and a long-gone Vietnam War G.I.—is hell-bent on wreaking revenge. On a vigilante mission to capture his partner’s murderer, Sonchai is begrudgingly paired with a beautiful FBI agent named Jones and captures her heart in the process. In a city fueled by illicit drugs and infinite corruption, prostitution and priceless art, Sonchai’s quest for vengeance takes him into a world much more sinister than he could have ever imagined.

Electrifying, darkly comic, razor-edged -- a thriller unlike any other.

Under a Bangkok bridge, inside a bolted-shut Mercedes: a murder by snake -- a charismatic African American Marine sergeant killed by a methamphetamine-stoked python and a swarm of stoned cobras.

Two cops -- the only two in the city not on the take -- arrive too late. Minutes later, only one is alive: Sonchai Jitpleecheep -- a devout Buddhist, equally versed in the sacred and the profane -- son of a long-gone Vietnam War G.I. and a Thai bar girl whose subsequent international clientele contributed richly to Sonchai's sophistication.

Now, his partner dead, Sonchai is doubly compelled to find the murderer, to maneuver through the world he knows all to well -- illicit drugs, prostitution, infinite corruption -- and into a realm he has never before encountered: the moneyed underbelly of the city, where desire rules and the human body is no less custom-designable than a raw hunk of jade. And where Sonchai tracks the killer -- and a predator of an even more sinister variety.

Thick with the authentic -- and hallucinogenic -- atmosphere of Bangkok, crowded with astonishing characters, uniquely smart and skeptical, literary and wildly readable, Bangkok 8 is one of a kind.

1 out of 5 stars Neither funny, thrilling or exotic.......2007-09-16

I wanted to like this but it was ultimately disappointing. I could feel no human connection to any of the characters who were just stereotypes. There was little dramatic drive to the novel. Just read the first couple of chapters and the last couple and save yourself the time. The descriptions of western decadence, Thai and buddhhist culture were shallow. They left a bad taste in my mouth.

A very much better series in the same genre is Colin Cotterill's series of mysteries set in Laos - The Coroner's Lunch, Thirty-Three Teeth and Disco for the Damned. The characters in Cotterill's series are people who you care about. The descrriptions of the eastern culture are respectful and loving.

5 out of 5 stars Darkly comic, delicious peek at a complex culture, fabulous read..........2007-09-16

I love Sonchai and everyone else...the beautiful prostitute, the corrupt police chief...I laughed so hard at the prostitute's arranging a heroin sting for the Chief who would therefore be able to afford having a new hospital named after him, and (using a calculator) calculate the number of years removed from her bad karma based on the number of operations over the years that would be performed at the hospital. I mean, the convoluted and darkly comic shtick that occur in this novel make it a surreal circus, with police-transsexuals, CIA clowns, a policeman-pimp (the hero) and his madam mom, a tattoo'd psychopath, canny whores and Muslim kill-joys who live in a small town that is essentially a brothel - it takes your breath away. The plot is absurd, and yet not all that original. However, the writing - the wit and charm of it - is to die for. Figuratively and literally. You just do not want to stop reading. For everyone who loves this book - read his latest, "Bangkok Haunts." That's where he really comes into his own with the Sonchai series. It's deliriously brilliant writing, but I warn you: it's one of the darkest books I think I've ever read. Just thinking about the "elephant torture" makes me shiver. Another Burdett book to check out: "The Last Six Million Seconds," about the days just before Hong Kong became Communist. You'll love it.

4 out of 5 stars Something new.......2007-09-10

Something new for the genre. I liked Sonchai. The only way to compete in this genre is to write well and to develop an interesting character. Burdett is an ok writer who tends to ramble at times...good editing will help...but he's created some interesting characters and he's smart enough to let Bangkok be one of them

5 out of 5 stars Do you want to get a feeling for what Buddhism might feel like?.......2007-09-09

OK, I know, it is a detective story not a self help book. But honestly, it is hard not to be impressed by the power of the Thai Therevada Buddhism expressed in the book while this Buddhist Thai policeman deals with murder, family issues, prostitution, corruption, seduction, drugs, shocking violence, addiction, crushing poverty, fear of death, every type of gender issue, and the loss of his best friend. Reading "The Gods Drink Whiskey" by Asma suggests that Mr. Burdett's caricature of our detective is at least literarily functional and certainly to us "farang" very valuable. Given that in this detective thriller you come upon much of what you both fear and desire the most, might you view your own life differently if you saw it through the eyes of Detective Jitpleecheep?

5 out of 5 stars Stunningly wonderful.......2007-09-05

If you want to be transported away, if you want a book that keeps you on the edge, if you want something new and different and fun to read, get this book. This book rates in the top ten mystery/thriller books I have read in the last 20 years. It is exotic, it is exciting, it takes you places you didn't know existed. This is the first of the series, and I can hardly wait to get the other two. Right on, John Burdett, you are a talent to rank with the best of them, Crais, Connerly, Hall, et al.

    Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

    5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

    Book Description

"It lay beside her on the pillow, shinier than silver, glowing softly, with twinkling blue stones set all around....It did not occur to her to wonder from whom it had come; she was merely aware that it was hers by right."

Ellen awakens on her tenth birthday to discover a silver crown on her pillow. She delightedly wears her strange new crown to the park that morning, but when she returns she is horrified to find that her house has burned down and her family has disappeared. Dazed, Ellen knows she must somehow reach Aunt Sarah's house, but the only way to get there is to travel over the unforgiving mountains on foot.

Her journey turns treacherous when she and her travel companion, Otto, stumble across an ominous castle where evil rules and everyone who enters falls prey to the darkness within. Everyone, that is, except Ellen. She alone must conquer this mysterious force -- but how?

In this gripping and memorable fantasy, Robert C. O'Brien, acclaimed author of the Newbery Medal-winning Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH, creates a world where good and evil are locked in battle and the balance between the two can only be restored by one young girl's determination to set things right.

5 out of 5 stars One of my old favorites.......2007-06-01

This was such a great book when I read it many years ago. I've recently gotten ahold of a copy and have to say that it's still a great read, especially when we are surounded by object in our daily lives that seem capable of their own thoughts and motives. It's also nice to see young people painted in such a way where they're not just miniature adults but actual kids reacting well to tough situations. I always wanted to learn more about what happened to Ellen and Otto and imagined they both continued to be self-sufficient individuals who went on to do quite well for themselves.

5 out of 5 stars I gave my copy away many years ago and regretted it........2007-04-19

I first bought this book when I was 12 years old at a book fair at school. I absolutely adored it and read it repeatedly for the next year. I gave it away to someone and never got it back. Only recently have I thought about it again and decided that Amazon was the first place to look for it. When I had read it again I couldn't believe how much of it I remembered from many moons ago. It was the first book to capture my interest in fantasy writing and I have never looked back since.

5 out of 5 stars The Silver Crown reveiw.......2006-11-15

The Silver Crown by Robert C. O'Brien is a wonderful fantasy about a girl named Ellen Carroll. Ellen wakes up one day and finds a silver crown on her bedside table. Shortly after, her house burns down with her family inside. Not knowing what else to do, Ellen decides to hitchhike to her Aunt's house. But then she finds the person who burnt down her house is stalking her because he wants to kidnap her and take her silver crown.

3 out of 5 stars Well written but occasionally dated.......2005-12-26

The book begins with Ellen receiving a silver crown in the mail on her birthday. The next thing she knows, her house has burned down, her family is missing and people are willing to engage in mayhem and murder to find her. Ellen decides she needs to visit an aunt and sets out on foot to find her. She eventually meets up with a somewhat mysterious young boy and they attempt to solve the mystery of the crown and get Ellen to safety. This book was written in 1969 and at times it really shows. For example, that Ellen wears pants briefly and gets messy is considered striking within the book. However, in the end the book is driven by Ellen's determination and will.

5 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Dark Fantasy Story.......2005-06-26

I first this book when I was about 12, and it remains on my shelf to this day (I'm now 35.) I highly recommend it for kids who enjoy fantasy books. Yes, it's dark and has genuinely creepy moments in it--but I see no reason that should discourage young readers or their parents, as it's an extremely engaging tale of a little girl battling the forces of evil. Resourceful girl characters are in short supply in children's fantasy literature, so this shouldn't be passed over.

The issues raised in another review here (regarding the unhelpfulness of adult authority figures in the book, and Ellen's bad descision to accept a ride from a stranger) would be points well taken if this were a book for 5 year olds. However, any child old enough to read and appreciate this book should be well past the point of learning that policemen are generally good and that hitchhiking is unwise. Give kids some credit! And give them good books, like this one.

5 out of 5 stars Great to know how Albrecht came to have his crown.......2007-06-13

I'm a huge rol fan, and I like WEREWOLF quite a bit. Albrecht is one of my favorites characters, so I had to read how it was that he came by his crown. The book is good, I really enjoyed reading it, and it's good time spent. But I confess I prefer the tribe novels, because the characters have like... I don't know... more consistency, and the Albrecht, Mary and Evan you find in the tribe novels is a more evolved pack, something you don't feel as strongly on this book.

But anyway, it was a joyful read... even when I doubt that "joyful" would be the right word for it... XDDD

4 out of 5 stars The Silver Crown.......2000-07-29

The novel itself seems a bit strange in it's writing style; the writing is very personal. Aside from the sometimes lack of understanding of situations, and the few times you cannot imagine a scene taking place, this book does what it sets out to do: Rage. Werewolf lore, Garou society, and the legacy of the Werebeast are strong in this book. Fight scenes are great, and the writer obviously knew his World of Darkness. I give this book a positive reveiw, and if your into Werewolf, it is a MUST have for your library.

    5 out of 5 stars A great ending..........2007-04-11

A 3 book series that is well worth the read. Clever and well written. A little dated but hey, what can you do? Anyone interested in the Sci-Fi Fantasy genre should invest in these books. I went to the author's web page and mailed my copies to him, now I have signed copies! Hooray for me!

    5 out of 5 stars The finale.......2005-09-02

This is the third of the trilogy, but not end of the series itself. It fleshes out the characters and is very graphic at times. I wish someone would reprint all three in a nice trade paperback. They are not huge Jordanish novels and could easily fit in a nice trade. I consider them classics of fantasy.

5 out of 5 stars On the edge of a sword.......2004-06-08

Karl fights to free slaves and to destroy the slave guild. This is a good book especially if you like alot of fighting scenes with pretty graphic descriptions on how people are being killed than this is the book for you!

3 out of 5 stars The Sword and the Chain Redux.......2003-04-10

The Silver Crown is no worse and no better than The Sword and the Chain. Like its immediate predecessor, it seems to have no real theme other than the use of violent means to achieve noble ends. The promising theme of The Sleeping Dragon - the adaptation of people from our world to a fantasy world - has been all but abandoned. What we are left with is not much more than entertainment; enjoyable but neither provocative nor moving.

To be fair, there is a suggestion that the true plot of the series is a long-term effort by erstwhile professor Deighton to control the fantasy world. Deighton even makes an appearance in The Silver Crown. It could be that an incredibly complex storyline is about to emerge, in which case my opinion of books two and three may have to be revisited. For now, however, I remain of the view that The Silver Crown is a harmless read that should be enjoyed by most fantasy readers who don't mind a bit of violence in their stories.

5 out of 5 stars Can he do no wrong?.......2001-08-02

Joel Rosenberg has cemented his status in the fantasy-fiction world with his third installment of the Guardians of the Flame Series. The title in itself is prophetic, and to have Karl leading the region is somnething no one could have expected. As I said earlier in another review, Mr. Rosenberg does not mince when it comes to the question of likeable characters getting hurt seriously or killed off. There were many times in this book that I was upset about what happened to a favorite character, but I realize that Mr. Rosenberg is putting as much "reality" in it as possible. Characters do NOT live forever, and yes, sometimes the favorite ones get killed.

Once again, Mr. Rosenberg has outdone the preceeding edition, and I am sure that he will continue to do so.
