Book Description
Paul Artisan, P.I. is a new version of an old breed -- a righter of wrongs, someone driven to get to the bottom of things. Too bad his usual cases are of the boring malpractice and fraud variety. Until now. His new gig turns on the disappearance of one of a pair of twins, adult scions of a rich but tragedy-prone family. The missing twin -- a charismatic poster-boy for irresponsibility -- has spent his life daring people to hate him, punishing himself endlessly for his screw-ups and misdeeds. The other twin -- Artisan's client -- is dutiful and resentful in equal measure, bewildered that his "other half" could have turned out so badly, and wracked by guilt at his inability to reform him. He has a more practical reason, as well, for wanting his brother found: their crazy father, in failing health and with guilty secrets of his own, will not divide the family fortune until both siblings are accounted for. But it isn't just a fortune that's at stake here. Truth itself is up for grabs, as the detective's discoveries seem to challenge everything we think we know about identity, and human nature, and family. As Artisan journeys across the globe to track down the bad twin, he seems to have moved into a mirror-world where friends and enemies have a way of looking very much alike. The P.I. may have his long-awaited chance to put his courage and ideals to the test, but if he doesn't get to the bottom of this case soon, it could very well cost him his life. Troup's long-awaited Bad Twin is a suspenseful novel that touches on many powerful themes, including the consequence of vengeance, the power of redemption, and where to turn when all seems lost.

Don't bother.......2007-07-20
Although competently written, this book is not a very good stand-alone, nor does it offer any clue or value for the fans of LOST.
Nice plot - abrupt ending.......2007-07-12
Bad Twin is a well written beach-read type novel. The author does a nice job of keeping it a page turner, as there were many chapter where I just couldnt seem to put it down. However, I was less than pleased with the way it ended. The resolving of the plot happened way too quickly in the last 4 pages of the book and just didnt seem to flow with the tempo of the rest of the story. Not bad though overall - some interesting LOST references too.
An Interesting Mystery Based Only on Its Own Merits.......2007-05-14
As long as you don't go into reading BAD TWIN thinking you're going to solve the mysteries of the hit television show Lost, then you should be okay. BAD TWIN, on its own, is an intriguing mystery featuring twin brothers--one a bigwig in the family business, the other a ne're-do-well who has gone missing.
Oh, sure, there are a few references in the actual storyline to make you go "hmmm"--the philosopher John Locke, a trip to Australia aboard an Oceanic flight, the totally hyped numbers showing up as the twin's birthday, and the family name of Widmore. But besides those few basic tidbits, this book won't tell you squat. It really has nothing to do with Lost.
On its own merits, though, it's an engaging mystery that I read in one day, and if Gary Troup was an actual person (which he isn't), and had actually written anything else besides BAD TWIN (which he hasn't), I wouldn't hesitate to read it.
Quick read, but kinda "flat".......2007-05-11
This book was short and I got it used (always a good way to go when you are unsure about a book). It wasn't necessarily a bad investment, but the book wasn't all that great either. If I had the choice, I would probably have rated it a 2-1/2 stars or maybe even 2 stars.
Plot:
Paul Artisan, a private detective, is hired by a rich family to find a wayward son. In the process, he discovers that there are quite a few secrets held by this family that will help lead to the recovery of the missing son.
Good:
There were some great points to the book. I liked Paul and Manny's relationship (something you just don't see between two generations anymore). I also took enjoyment of seeing the Hanso Foundation mentioned (though how would they have let Gary Troup put them in a fictional book is beyond me). Other tidbits from the LOST show were interesting but not essential (which was upsetting).
Bad:
However, the story was flat. The traveling across the world to find the son gets old and feels contrived and more than a little like those connect-the-dots puzzles you do as a child. I had a hard time picturing straight laced, "I-want-to-find-the-truth" Paul with the Paul reminiscing about taking marijuana. The romance between Paul and Pru, which might have made sense if given more time, was rushed. For someone who hasn't had sex apparently in a long time, the thought is always on his mind and apparently every woman he has contact with. I am shocked at how many women are like "I wish I made love to you" after a thirty minute interview. The older son uses more gutter language than he really should (while it is completely absent from the younger). And some of the literary references feel forced (like the author felt he should allude to something later).
Dialogue/Sexual Situations/Violence:
F-word gets quite a work out in this book by pretty much everyone Paul gets in contact with. Sh**, d***, h***, God's name are also frequent. Paul pretty much wants to have sex with any woman he meets (no matter how long or short that is) and does have sex (moderately graphic) with Pru. It is suggested that Xander had a relationship with his brother's wife. The step-mom is having an affair. Violence includes two deaths and several attempted murders.
Overall:
For LOSTies (like myself), this is interesting but not necessary. Do what I did and buy it used. I find it difficult to believe that someone like Sawyer who is obviously well-read (i.e. Of Mice and Men) would enjoy something this mediocre and amatuerish.
Laurence Shames at his best!.......2007-04-19
I did not plan on reading this novel. It seemed to be nothing more then another way to cash in on the franchise. Then I discovered who the author really is. Laurence Shames, writer of many quirky mystery novels taking place in Key West, is a pure joy. I can't believe any one thought that Stephen King had written this. Three key clues should have caught anyone familiar with Shames' earlier novels. Scenes in Key West, an old man with an old dog with wise advice, and an actual line taken from an earlier novel's title (The Naked Detective).
Quirky characters and settings make for an excellent book for a weekend at the beach. The mentioning of elements from Lost just add to the fun.

Mom from Hanover, PA.......2003-08-22
Very cute story. My 3 and 5 year-old loved reading this book with me, even though they are not twins. They thought the "poodles from space" were hilarious! Great ending when the twins are asked to stop playing and do their homework and it says, "Even superheroes have to listen to their mothers!" We look forward to reading more of the books in this series.
Book Description
Everyone has always made fun of Sandra Ferris. She's gawky and shy, and people whisper about her everywhere she goes. But the Wakefield twins step in and change Sandra's life by giving her a new look -- hair, clothes, make-up, the works!
Suddenly, the ugly duckling turns into a beautiful swan, and that means trouble for Jessica. Now Sandra is getting all the attention. And even worse, Jessica discovers that Sandra is running against her for Sweet Valley's sixth-grade Citizen of the Year . . . and it looks as if she just might win. Jessica has to find some way to tame the moster she has created -- and her time is running short.
Customer Reviews:
Awesome book!.......2006-12-23
This is a very good book for someone who is shy, is worried about self-image, and doesn't believe in herself, like me.
Sandra Feris is anything but popular. She's shy, tall, gawky, and doesn't have strong self-confidence. Everyone at school makes fun of her. Until Jessica and Elizabeth step in.
They give Sandra a complete makeover--they not only teach her how to do her hair, make-up, and clothes, but also how to talk, walk, and smile confidently.
The next day Sandra is the talk of the town. People who used to laugh behind her back are now complimenting her new look. Bruce Patman is flirting with her. Even Steven gets tongue-tied around Sandra! And there is a rumor that Sandra has been asked to join the Unicorns.
All the attention Sandra is receiving is making Jessica jealous. She's used to being the pretty and popular one! So Jessica is determined to win a huge school contest that is coming up to show people how popular she really is. Jessica's sure she has a 99% chance of winning...until Sandra gets in the way.
The twins remind me of Mary-Kate and Ashley in the Two of a Kind books, so if you like that or the Babysitters Club series, I would highly recommend The Sweet Valley Twins series to you.
My Fair Lady,Sweet Valley Style.......2005-02-27
Sandra Ferris is awkward, and Shy.Jessica gives her a makeover, like in the movie,My Fair Lady, only Eliza didn't get a bighead like Sandra Ferris did. Sandra gets a new hairstyle, new waredrobe, everything. She gets a big head.
Swans and Ugly Ducklings.......2004-09-08
If there are any `swans' in this Cinderella-story of the transformation of a shy and awkward girl into one of Sweet Valley Middle School's most pretty and popular girls, Jessica Wakefield is, regrettably, more the `ugly duckling' than the swan. Jessica's idea is bad - not in its effects on Sandra Ferris, but in its effects on Jessica herself. Sandra's transformation only works to reveal Jessica's inevitable jealousy, pettishness and a surprising truth: that all bullies are, ultimately, insecure and torment others to disguise or evade a low-esteem of their own. There is very little doubt that Jessica is a bully, though her creator, Francine Pascal, and the author of the Sweet Valley Twins series, Jamie Suzanne, attempt to gloss over Jessica's ugly-duckling heart by dwelling (too much, perhaps) on Jessica's physical beauty and her interpersonal or social skills. Moments of genuine repentance and humility are rare for Jessica Wakefield: more frequently than not, she experiences genuine remorse at having been caught or exposed in some crime of the conscience, and it is this - the treachery of being discovered and uncovered - that makes Jessica cry, cringe, coax, beg, wheedle, or threaten. If Jessica is stung into repentance, the change is only temporary (long enough to last until the book's happy ending), and by the next story she is as hardened as ever a 12-year-old can be. If readers dislike Jessica Wakefield at this precocious age, they will enjoy her antics even less when she is 16.
Having drawn the shape of Jessica's ugly-duckling heart, it's also important to emphasize that even `swans' like Elizabeth, Jessica's twin, and Sandra Ferris also have ugly-duckling experiences and feelings. Sandra, in particular, gives readers insight into how an ugly-duckling appearance on the outside can lead to ugly-duckling thoughts and feelings on the inside - and not just about herself, but also how she believes others in school perceive her. Elizabeth, too, also shows her less winsome self in condemning Sandra so completely after Sandra's apparent betrayal of her friendship and trust. Whilst it's true that Jessica and the Unicorns would undoubtedly agree with Sandra's sense of shame and inadequacy about herself, it's also not true that people like Elizabeth, Amy or Julie would likewise agree. Elizabeth is never fully aligned with the outcasts and misfits of the school, but she does have a high sense of justice and sympathy for the bullied and the maligned - traits that cause her to better identify with people like Sandra than even her own twin in some instances. Readers applaud Elizabeth's endeavours to befriend the crowd on the fringes, just as we applaud Jessica's real moments of humility and repentance.
Sandra Ferris, marginalized by her tall stature and the accompanying awkward gait, also shows her readers that being a real `swan' is more than knowing about the right clothes to wear, the right walk to assume, or the right make-up to wear: it's also about how you treat others. Her own moral lesson in honesty and integrity neatly fits in with the story's ending - though, by now, readers of the series know that even ugly-ducklings in Sweet Valley lead very charmed lives.
jessica's Bad Idea.......2002-12-12
In the book jessica's Bad Idea, the protagonistis Jessica and Sandra. The conflict of the story is when Jessica gives Sandra a makeover and gives her new clothes, then the next day at school Sandra becomes more popular than Jessica is.A small summary for this story is when Jessica and Sandra both run for student of the year.the best part of the story is when Sandra actually gives credit to Jessica for giving her the makeover, and Sandra and Jessica become friends.
make-over fun.......2001-08-02
Jessica and Elizabeth decide to help a girl named sandra who is very unhappy as she is tall and geeky and unpopular.Elizabeth is delighted when Jessica gives Sandra a make-over.Sandra is shocked and delighted also,as she is made to look her best. But soon Jessica regrets the makeover as Sandra is almost more popular than she is...and has this gone to Sandras head or is she still insecure??

Book Description
Ex-stunt woman and champion wisecracker Mary is furious to discover that her twin sister Desiree — accused of murdering her husband — has been wrangled back to an Arizona prison by a grizzled detective named Tuttle. Fueled by an unnaturally obsessive love for her twin, Mary sets off on a homicidal cross-country campaign to free Desiree from the clutches of the law, recruiting a bizarre bunch of cohorts on the way. Flanked by fast-talking lawyer Mexicali Sally, frustrated punk-rocker Revolta, and a hulking but flamboyant mass of a man known only as "The Violator," Mary steals motorcycles, stages lethal stripteases, and generally wreaks havoc until arriving in Arizona, where she plots a prison break for Desiree and faces a final showdown with Detective Tuttle. Bursting with action, How to Smash Everyone to Pieces keeps the pedal to the metal from start to finish.

A Clockwork Orange meets Easy Rider.......2005-04-15
Some love the fact that there's a lot of cartoonish prose out there, some don't. Some celebrate the elastic impossibility of imagination, others wish Harold Bloom's literary aesthetic was the sole form of valuing anything anyone writes.
Well smash both of these preconceptions to pieces. This novella, while fast paced and full of porno sex and violence, has a certain subtle edge to its prose that makes the characters feel a little more real than heroes out of Voltron, yet without slowing down the pace of the read.
Mary, the protagonist, likes to slash dudes and screw gals. But what makes her beautiful is that the author does not write her as a one dimensional 'femme fatale'; instead we get as much about what she loves (like her sister and diner food and trees), as what she hates. We get emotion and grittiness, we get fat kids who play with dirty dogs, we get new and familiar forms of slang written phonetically and rhyming as well as Burgess at his best, and plenty of other things very much NOT cartoonish, which ends up making what is a little more vibrant in its color.
So if you want something zany and vibrant, but with a bit of subtlety that doesn't weight it down, I strongly recommend How To Smash Everyone To Pieces.
IF SHAFT & SUPERFLY HAD A BABY, IT WOULD BE THIS BOOK.......2005-01-09
THIS BOOK RECIEVED 5 STARS FROM FROM ME FOR THE FOLLOWING REASONS: (A): THERE IS A LOT OF NON-STOP ACTION IN THIS BOOK. THE ACTION IS SOMETIMES IN THE FORM OF GRATUITOUS VIOLENCE; (B): THE ACTION IS ALSO IN THE FORM OF GRAPHIC DEPICTIONS OF SEX (MOSTLY LESBIAN IN NATURE); AND (C): THERE ARE ALSO STRIPPING AND JAILHOUSE SHOWER SCENES, WHICH WILL RAISE YOUR CURLY HAIRS STRAIGHT UP. BUT MAINLY, IT'S A BOOK ABOUT A WOMAN WHO JUST HAPPENS TO BE MADLY IN LOVE WITH HER VERY OWN FLESH AND BLOOD SISTER. SO, IF YOU CAN GET PAST THESE ISSUES, YOU WILL FIND YOURSELF THOROUGHLY ENJOYING THIS LITERARY ROLLERCOASTER OF "SEX, DRUGS, AND ROCK & ROLL". ENJOY THE RIDE, BUT PLEASE, DO ME A FAVOR...AND FASTEN YOUR SEATBELTS...TIGHT!!!
The greatest book about a serial killing lesbian ever!.......2004-12-02
OK first off - you should buy this book. Its great. It's kinda like listening to The Who at full volume while destroying a yuppie bar with a baseball bat. On really great trucker speed. It's that good.
If you like your books quick, dirty and LOUD then get a copy of How To Smash Everyone To Pieces. I defy anyone who has ever laughed at a John Waters movie, gotten drunk and made a fool of themselves at a party, lost a tooth and cant remember how or recieved a death threat from an ex-girlfriend / boyfriend NOT to LOVE this book. OK thats it. As you can tell, I liked the book.

I love this one!!!This one is better than Milady Alex!!!.......1998-06-21
The twins in this story are much, much, trouble!! The funny part is when the twins lock Alex out of the house. Then she I think either used her telekinesis or morphed into a puddle and got back into the house using the back door. The best part is at the HAUNTED HOUSE, she scares the twins using her telekinesis to move stuff around. They were so, so, scared!!! Now that taught them a lesson!!
Lost in Paridise Valley.......1998-04-13

It was a great book, I couldn't put it down!.......1997-12-10
I liked the title but I think it could have been more creative. THE book really kept me reading though. I always would read it at night after I was suppose to be asleep. And I liked it so much I read it twice! My favorite part was when Alex was in the Hanted House and started to pick up all the furniture aand scare the kids out of their wits!! I love the ALEX MACK SERIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Blind Faith by Kayla Perrin

CAN'T PUT DOWN.......2006-01-01
This book is to die for...after all the disasters that occurred in 2005 that devistated so many lives makes you wonder...But this book will inspire you to have faith and to believe that miracles do happen. I would recommend this book to anyone!!
(RAW Rating: 4.5) - Feeling like Christmas.......2005-12-31
There are four enchanting stories which will enhance the real meaning of the season and the blessing of miracles.
"Shepherd Moon" by Rochelle Alers tells of Rhianna, a young woman who fled her hometown when her fiancé was killed in an automobile accident. The face of his twin brother was too painful a reminder of what she had lost. Ten years later Rhianna returns home because of a family illness and runs into her fiancé's twin brother and also her past. Now Rhianna can bring closure to her loss and accept the real reason she fled Shepherd, New York.
"Wishing on a Starr" by Adrianne Byrd shares the turmoil seventeen-year-old Gia suffered when she became a widow and a single mother in a matter of months. But Gia never saw her daughter, her aunt saw to that. The loss of her child forced Gia to leave Talboton, GA for New York City. Almost fourteen years later Gia still longs for her child and wants to do something about it. In a crowded department store, Gia bumps into Daniel Davis and his thirteen- year-old daughter, Starr. There is an immediate attraction between the two, and an answer to a wish even Gia could not have imagined.
"Blind Faith" by Kayla Perrin revisits Andrea and Mark, a couple who ended their relationship because Mark was snubbed by Andrea's parents. Years later Andrea's family has fallen on hard times, but Mark has excelled and is an entrepreneur. Their chance meeting is cordial but strained, still Mark is intrigued. An impromptu visit, a near fatal accident, and some blind faith are what Mark needed to propel him past his hesitancy about capturing his holiday miracle.
My favorite, "A Christmas Serenade" by Janice Simms, brings a world traveled concert pianist back to his roots in Charleston, South Carolina in search of himself. The best friend of his deceased mother welcomes him with open arms and southern hospitality. But this motherly matchmaker offers Jack so much more. She shares information about his parents and tapes of performances by her daughter, Callie. Callie is also a pianist, a blues singer and a magazine editor. When Callie and Jack meet the holiday suddenly feels and sounds majestic. But Callie is afraid that the difference between their respective backgrounds may be a problem.
THE SEASON OF MIRACLES is a Christmas Anthology filled with promise and hope. Grab a cup of eggnog, get comfortable on the couch and experience the joy of holiday love. This one will delight the heart.

Great book in the tradition of heartwarming Christmas tales.......2005-12-30
This book helped me to remember the true meaning behind Christmas and the value of embracing the spirit of giving.
A book of hope.......2005-12-30
There are times when you read a book at just the right time in your life and this is one of those books and times. Hurricane Katrina took so much away from Biloxi MS, but more than anything material, it took away the hope and spirit of so many, myself included. The holiday season started out so bleakly and I admit that I just wanted it to be over, but when you have children you know you have to find the strength to make it as wonderful as possible. It was a struggle until I read A Season of Miracles. I started the book and before I knew it I could feel myself smiling and just feeling good about everything. This book made me believe in miracles again but most of all the miracle of a better tomorrow. It makes you feel so good inside and you cannot help but feel a little sad when you come to the last page, as you feel as if you are leaving behind friends you have come to know and care about. This book is a miracle in itself and one which I will read over and over again.
You Will Believe in Miracles!.......2005-12-28
This book was awesome! All of these authors are phenomenal and their stories in this book were great and very touching. I am a big fan of all four so I knew even before I purchased this book that I would love it and I did! Each story made me believe that Miracles can happen if you open your heart and believe.

Hilarious fantasy for everybody.......2003-08-25
My daughter, who is 14 really liked this book, but I found it first ! (I reccomended it to her !) There is a little bit of a love story in it and alot of wise-cracking. The mishaps that the genies and humans go through are hilarious. As a parent I was happy that the language was clean and yet still funny. It was a real light-hearted read, and after reading it, we immediately bought a copy.
The book.......2001-10-13
This book is extemely boring in the beginning just talking about the genie but some how this arabic book had some sense in it. This book is not for everyone since to some people it's not interesting. But this book is worth buying
READ THIS BOOK!.......2000-01-06
This is the best book I have ever read. I think the very beginning of the book was a little boring though.
A GREAT READ!!!!!.......1998-07-15
This hilarious book has the same great kind of humor that peppers Patricia C Wrede's "Dealing with Dragons" series.
How a genie was sent out into the world to learn.......1997-07-20
This book is about Khalid, a genie student that was sent out into the world to study mortals...and how to be a successful genie. Being very intelligent, but not too much aware of the human world, he mistakes his first master, (a cat) for a mortal. Being a very proud genie, when he was sent out into the world to try again his luck, he becomes impatient, so when he meets his second master(a true mortal this time,) he becomes impatient and arrogant and, in uttering the important imformation that genies have to inform their masters before they can make their official wishes, he forgets to say a very important line which stated that masters can make 3 wishes and 3 wishes only, which made him bound to his master forever, until his master wishes him free. Khalid learns important lessons about himself, humans, and love. I gave this book a 10 because it is very amusing and is really an ingenious story because it was written very clearly that gave you a superb picture of how everything is, from the description of Khalid to turban, and the message of this story is very clear. The characters were true to life despites its fantasy-ie setting and characters
