5 out of 5 stars ****SCOTTISH HEAVEN****.......2007-02-10

This book is for all of us Scottish fans. They were all great and on my KEEPER shelf. Worth buying and reading.

1 out of 5 stars boring, boring, and boring.......2006-09-19

This was one of the most boring collection of stories I have ever read. I have liked most of Jude Deveraux's earlier books and thought this might be a good read. It was a good snooze. None of the stories caught my attention. I kept plugging away, hoping something would catch my attention, but no. I couldn't get interested in any of the characters, the plots were lifeless, and any romance seemed pretty much nonexistent.
Maybe I read this on a bad day, but I doubt it. I think it was just a collection of stories from authors who wrote them on bad days. No zing, no pop, no life.

3 out of 5 stars Jill Barnett outshines them all..........2004-03-16

This is a five story anthology by various authors all taking place in the Scottish Highlands. Some stories are much better than others. I will note a separate rating of each below, but the average of all five ended up being 3 stars, hence my overall score of the book.

In the first story, "Unfinished Business", by Jude Deveraux, Tyler Stevens agrees to fill in at work for her niece Krissy when she takes ill. Temporarily stepping into Krissy's secretarial position leads Tyler to travel to Scotland with Krissy's boss, Joel Kingsley. While in Scotland, Tyler and Joel unwittingly stumble into a ghostly murder mystery that piques their curiosity. Investigating together may lead them to find more than the answer to an old mystery. This story was pretty good, but not what I would consider excellent. It was a worthwhile read and deserves a rating of three stars.

The second story, "Fall From Grace", by Jill Barnett was the hands down winner of this lot. This was my very first Jill Barnett read, and since discovering her here, I've now read nearly all her work. The clans McNish and McNab have been at war for some time. Grace McNish and her band of merry misfits mistakenly ambush and capture the wrong man. Colin Campbell, Earl of Argyll, was on a diplomatic journey investigating the McNab/McNish clan war when Grace "captured" him. After catching a glimpse of the wild Scottish beauty, he decided to remain in her custody to be near her, and gather information for his investigation. This wonderful story is full of humor. From one clan member who is half deaf and misunderstands even simple instructions, to another who can't hit the side of a barn with the bow and arrow. I laughed out loud too many times to count. This story also contains the steamiest love scene of the entire book. After everything I've read by Ms. Barnett, this is still a favorite. Definitely a five star read.

"Cold Feet", penned by Geralyn Dawson, is the next entry. Texas cowboy, Rand Jenkins, gets lost in the snow-covered moors en route to a castle in the Highlands. Stopping off at a cottage for directions, he meets Annie Munro, a healer who is considered a witch by the locals. Rand ends up spending more time with the lovely Annie than he had planned. For some unknown reason, every cat in the surrounding area is attracted to Rand who subsequently develops an allergic reaction. Using her knowledge of herbs and potions, Annie attempts to ease his suffering. While Rand is fending off felines and trying to get rid of his itching, he begins to get an itch for Annie. This was my least favorite story. It just seemed too unrealistic and didn't hold my attention. I would give this one two stars.

"The Matchmaker" by Pam Binder is story number four. Kathleen MacKenzie owns a bakery in the Scottish town of Edinburgh. When American businessman Duncan MacGreggor leaves his wallet at her establishment, Kathleen sets out to return it. Catching up to him in the elevator of the Palace of Holyroodhouse, she hands him the wallet. Magically they are catapulted back in time to the sixteenth century where Mary, Queen of Scots still inhabited the castle. Now, together they must find their way back to their own time. I wasn't greatly impressed with this novella either. It seemed a little too far-fetched to be believable. I would rate it two stars as well.

Last, but not least, is "The Christmas Captive" by Patricia Cabot. Lady Mairi has fled her guardian's home to escape his rule, and his intent to marry her. Physician, Niall Donnegal, whose brother is the new Duke of Camden, finds Mairi who was injured during her flight. Not knowing she is related to his dreaded enemy, he takes her to his home to recuperate. Their relationship quickly grows. But they must deal with the curse she believes is real, and her guardian's wrath, in order to remain together. This story was quite enjoyable and an above average read. It earns a rating of four stars from me.

At the time I read this book, Jude Deveraux was the only author familiar to me. Her story here was better than the full-length novel I had already read. Overall, three of the stories were worth reading - Jude Deveraux, Jill Barnett, and Patricia Cabot. I would say three out of five would make this collection worth picking up. And with each entry being approximately 100 pages, no one story takes long to read.

1 out of 5 stars boring.......2003-10-14

I expected a lot more out of this book, especially from Jude. I couldn't even get through half of the stories before I gave up on it and marked it off as a wasted $3. Don't bother with it, you will probably fall asleep before you can finish it.

4 out of 5 stars wonderful anthology.......2002-01-19

I'll admit that as a big fan of Diana Gabaldon's OUTLANDER series I'm drawn to Scottish based romance. I bought the collection knowing nothing of anyone but Jude Deveraux, but if this is any example of their work I'll be hitting the search button after this review is finished. The book of 5 novellas was a wonderful escape from home and work.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS sneaks a ghost story into a sassy romance between 2 people who upon first glance couldn't be more wrong for each other.-- Tyler Stevens is convinced Joel Kingsley is completely wrong for her young cousin. Krissy is terribly infatuated with her older boss and despite Tyler's efforts to convince her otherwise, the girl thinks she's in love. Going to Scotland was Krissy's idea. If Tyler took her cousins place on the business trip she could keep an eye on Mr Kingsley for her while she recouperates from her terrible cold. What Tyler didn't count on was that "Old Mr. Kingsley" wouldn't be that old...in fact he was rather appealing. Having them thrown together to solve a centuries old mystery (complete with ghosts) only complicates an already tricky situation.

FALL FROM GRACE's humor really got to me. I felt so silly laughing out loud in the breakroom at work, but then that's what I needed the breakroom for....a break.---Grace McNish was fiercly protective of her clan after years of their being subjected to the McNab's theiving and raiding. When one of the McNab sons falls into her hands she and her rag-tag band of highland "merry-men" think they have it made. Ransom. One problem. He's not who they think he is.

COLD FEET who could resist a cowboy from Texas in the first place. This story had all of the things I love humor, romance and a bit of the supernatural.--Rand Jenkins is lost on the Scottish moors. He's supposed to be guiding his friends bride to the ancestral home, but as a Texan he's a fish out of water. Rand stumbles upon the cottage of a friendly local woman who takes them in out of the cold. She claims she's a witch and when strange things start happening to Rand he's convinced she has put a spell on him....and she has in more ways than one.

THE MATCHMAKER has modern business owner Kathleen MacKenzie fending off the efforts of the local matchmaker Harriet. She doesn't need a husband and even if she did she could find him all on her own. For example, the handsome American who stops by every morning for coffee and a scone. Harriet will not be thwarted. A little coaxing and (of course) a little magic will throw the hesitant couple into the past where they are not only fighting their feelings for each other they are fighting for their lives in the time of Mary, Queen of Scots.

THE CHRISTMAS CAPTIVE was read at the perfect time of the year...well Christmas of course. Mairi is on the run from her fiance. Niall is more than happy to keep her hidden after discovering the young runaway on his families lands cowering inside a hollowed out tree. She's full of secrets and a mysterious past that the logical physicain refuses to beleive. When her fiance comes looking for her, the Scottish lord has to deal with a murderous enemy when he admits that his soul mate will be staying right where she is... with him.

These 5 tales weave a pattern of magic, history and romance that really reel you in. I highly recommend them to anyone who needs to "get away". The shorter novellas let you finish one when you might not have the time to read a longer book. It's perfect for someone who really does need a vacation and a little romance but just doesn't have the time.

Book Description

Christmas is an ancient Roman festival, not to be celebrated by decent folk in the Scottish Highlands. Police Constable Hamish Macbeth has always loved the festivities, but this year he is stuck with the long, lonely Christmas shift in freezing Lochdubh. A cranky old lady kicks off the holidays by reporting her cat missing. Then the Christmas lights and tree in a nearby village disappear soon after the local council voted to allow decorations. As Hamish finds a way to bring Christmas to the Highlands and make a little girls dreams come true, he finds, to his delight, that he has the best Christmas ever.

Download Description

Police Constable Hamish Macbeth was fighting his own Christmas blues. It was the week before Christmas and bitter cold weather held the countryside in its iron grip around the Highlands of Scotland and the village of Lochdubh. He missed his family, who were vacationing in Florida. Hamish's family were unusual in the Highlands because they had always celebrated Christmas with a turkey, tree, lights, and presents. In many parts of the Highlands the old spirit of John Knox still lingered, blasting anyone with the threat of hellfire for even thinking of celebrating this heathen festival. For as every good Calvinist knew, Christmas was an old Roman festival. It was work as usual for Hamish, who had the entire Christmas shift. One of the more irritating complaints came from the cranky Mrs. Gallagher. This time her cat had gone missing. A neighboring town, a bit less rigid about the holiday, reported missing Christmas lights. For the first time, the village council had voted to put up lights along main street. Now they had been stolen from the community center along with a missing tree. Fortunately, there's no assault or murder cases, but Hamish thinks it's a real crime not to celebrate Christmas. As he makes a little girl's dream come true, finds a way to light the neighboring village, and soothes a lonely woman's fears, Hamish gets a very special present of his own (of the canine variety) and has the best Christmas ever. All in a week's work.

5 out of 5 stars No Plans for Christmas.......2007-05-17

Do you ever remember dreading Christmas? Did something happen to make it all turn out all right? If not, you will find good holiday cheer in M. C. Beaton's A Highland Christmas.

The sun barely peeks over the horizon for a few hours near the solstice in Lochdubh. Most villagers hunker down indoors and perhaps take a wee dram while wishing that the telly would offer some new shows rather than rerunning Miracle on 34th Street for the hundredth time.

Where is the festiveness of the season? The religious villagers see Christmas as merely a pagan festival that no true Christian would observe. The streets are quiet, the houses are dark, and Hamish is lonely as the book opens. His family has fled to warmer climes after his mum wins a contest for writing a soap powder slogan. Priscilla is off in New York working on a computer contract.

How will Hamish celebrate the holidays? Hopefully, without a murder investigation intruding.

In a change of pace, this story focuses on the role of community policing and takes Hamish away from most serious crime. The old recluse, Mrs. Gallagher, has lost her cat, Smoky, and demands that Hamish leave no stone unturned to find Smoky. Hamish turns curious about Mrs. Gallagher when he realizes that she seems afraid of something more than a lost cat.

In searching for the cat, Hamish addresses the town's schoolchildren and asks them to be on the lookout. He asks them what they will receive for Christmas, and the children seem mostly happy. But did he spot a worried face?

In neighboring, but unneighborly, Cnothan, an enterprising vendor has persuaded the town to raise money by donation to purchase a tree and lights for the very first time. But the hopes for a festive celebration are dashed when the supply shed is broken into. Hamish follows the trail of needles to some tire tracks.

Hamish decides it would be kind to take the new teacher, Maisie Pease, out for dinner. She's soon swept up in his attention and invites Hamish for Christmas dinner. Will it be grand? How will he respond to mistletoe?

While trying to find out about Mrs. Gallagher's background, Hamish stumbles onto a nursing home where the patients could use some holiday cheer. Soon, Hamish has arranged for entertainment and brings his own party to celebrate.

With the clock ticking down towards Christmas day, Hamish finds himself with an opportunity to play Santa Claus. But will Detective Chief Inspector Blair destroy the good cheer?

And wonder of wonders . . . what will Hamish get for Christmas?

Don't miss this heart-warming story. It'll be one of your favorites.

5 out of 5 stars 'A Highland Christmas' will make you want to pack your bags and head to Lochdubh to spend the holidays with Hamish and the gang!.......2006-10-20

Constable Hamish Macbeth has always managed to find a way to celebrate the Christmas holidays, even in the small, gossip-ridden town of Lochdubh, Scotland, where news travels faster than the daily post, and the local Calvinist beliefs have kept Christmas trimmings out of sight of the townspeople, and the thought of Jolly Old St. Nick nothing but a fairytale to be read about in books, or watched in films on the telly. But this year, with his parents away, his mother having won a vacation for coming up with a soap slogan, leaving him behind to watch over the quaint little town and its nosy occupants, Hamish finds himself feeling a bit lonesome, and craving the Christmas spirit he's always loved, complete with presents, turkey, fairy lights, and a large Christmas tree wound with sparkling tinsel, and shiny ornaments. But when the lanky lawman finally discovers the key to unlock the secrets to cranky old Mrs. Gallagher's fears; learns of an unhappy young girl named Morag, who has never had the joy of celebrating Christmas, calling someone a friend, or doing anything that her parents didn't approve of; and discovers that a group of hoodlums have been hitting local towns, stealing all of their holiday goods, along with their Christmas spirit, Hamish must muster up every bit of his Highland charm, along with his sleuthing skills, in an attempt to make things right for everyone, and create the perfect holiday for all those involved, before every bit of this years Yuletide cheer goes straight out the window, and leaves nothing but a dreary winter in its wake.

This was my first M.C. Beaton novel, but I can honestly say that it will most certainly not be my last. Hamish Macbeth is a dapper, dashing detective, whose sleuthing skills may need a little work, but are more than made up for in the good spirit department. From page one, he captures you with his witty commentary, and snappy thoughts regarding everything in his path, from the townspeople he encounters, to the weather, and even to the ongoing investigations he happens to be working on. His interactions with various townspeople such as the grumpy Mrs. Gallagher, the over-protected and somewhat sheltered Morag, and the over-expectant new schoolteacher he happens to be semi-romancing, Maisie Pease; along with his oft-times seemingly off-his-rocker boss, Lieutenant Blair, are natural, and flow at such an easy, believable pace that the reader literally feels as if they are a part of the scene, conversing with the characters themselves. A HIGHLAND CHRISTMAS will make you want to pack your bags and head to Lochdubh to spend the holidays with Hamish and the gang!

5 out of 5 stars I Have a new favourite Christmas story........2004-03-09

This is a wonderful little Christmas novelette. I didn't enjoy it any less because I was reading it in March rather than in December, but it will be a wonderful addition to my holiday favourties. I am a huge Hamish Macbeth fan and this book is Hamish at his very best! It's Christmas in Lochdubh and Hamish is feeling blue - there are no Christmas lights and decorations in strict Calvinist Lochdubh and his old flame Priscilla is in New York, of all places (so far away, so very far away he thinks). But all of a sudden Hamish is very busy with some crimes in his patch. He has to deal with the village grumpy lady over her lost cat, he is confronted with a lonely little girl, and someone has taken all the fairy lights and the Christmas tree from a neighbouring village of Chnothan. Hamish pulls out all the stops on his charm and his detective ability to set things right in his little world.

5 out of 5 stars --Very Enjoyable Story--.......2004-01-17

In the small Highland village of Lochdubh, Christmas is not celebrated with bright decorations, festive trees or gaily-wrapped presents. The old Calvinist ways still endure. Since Christmas comes at the same time as an ancient pagan festival, the strict followers of Calvinism continue to celebrate Christmas with moderation.

Police Constable Hamish Macbeth does believe in having a wonderful Christmas, but since he's on duty during the holidays, he knows that it will be a dreary and lonely time for him. Thankfully, there are no violent crimes; however, Mrs. Gallagher, a mean and crabby woman, demands that Hamish find her lost cat. He also has to cover crime in the nearby village of Cnothan where a Christmas tree and lights were stolen. When Hamish questions people about the lost cat, he meets the pretty new teacher and a little girl who needs some joy in her life.

Hamish ponders the situation and decides to organize Christmas carols and a party at the local retirement home. He also decorates the village with sparkling strings of lights and brings the true spirit of Christmas to Lochdubh and himself.

5 out of 5 stars My new favorite!.......2003-05-24

This is the sixteenth in a series of mysteries featuring the detective work of small town, Highland Scottish detective Hamish Macbeth, P.C. It's Christmas time, but there is no rest for Hamish Macbeth. When a mean old woman from outside of town insists that her cat was stolen, Hamish begins to investigate. And then, he begins to wonder why the woman is so mean and lives a fearful and solitary life behind locked doors. A second mystery materializes when the Christmas decorations for a neighboring town are stolen. For Hamish this is a Christmas of finding things that were lost (sometimes a long time ago), and finding new friends.

My wife introduced me to Hamish Macbeth and made a fan of me. Although there are no murders, this is a great book, with an interesting storyline, setting and characters. (Sherlock Holmes stories rarely revolved around murders, as I recall.) I really enjoyed this book, and proudly proclaim it my favorite so far. If you are interested in a story set in modern Scotland, or just a good mystery, then I highly recommend this book to you.

4 out of 5 stars Medieval Christmas romance.......2005-10-22

            From the back cover:

One Christmas Night Long, Long Ago...

A wounded nobleman falls in love with the brave young woman who rescures him in Ruth Langan's "Highland Christmas".

A Noble knight uncovers the secrets of a lady who is disguised as his servant in Jacqueline Navin's "A Wife for Christmas".

Two lonely hearts find themselves the objects of an intricate matchmaking plan in Lyn Stone's "Ian's Gift".

Join in the revelry of Christmas from the Scottish Highlands to the English countryside with these three tales of Medieval Holiday Merriment!

            And my review:

The first story, Highland Christmas, was only okay. The characters were well drawn, and ones that you liked instantly. My biggest complaint with this story was the author's frequent point-of-view changes. It was really annoying to read his thoughts, then her thoughts, then her father's thoughts, then one of the kid's thoughts, then back to hers again in a single scene. It got really confusing to keep track of who was thinking and feeling what and that really detracted from the story. Three stars.

The second story, A Wife For Christmas, was very good. This was the novella that I kept the book for and made it worth my money. There were no annoying point-of-view switches within a section, the plot was good, the characters were good, the history was good. I just loved the heroine of this one; she was so brave, willing to risk her life to protect those she loved. And he was a good man - you could see it from the beginning. This one was worth a re-read. Five stars.

The last story, Ian's Gift, could not hold my interest. I pushed through until the end of the second chapter, but my mind kept wandering so much that I gave up. This was one of the stories that felt like all plot and no character development. One star.

As always with romance anthologies, if you find one good story, you're lucky. This one has one that makes it worth the read.

One of the improvements of the new CLAN BOOK series over the original is consistency between the various installments. The new books all seem to include discipline variations and merits and flaws tailored to specific clans as well as all new sample character templates. (MIND'S EYE THEATRE stats are now always given for much of this) Often extensive sections on notable clan members are included in all of them. The only standard feature missing from the new CLAN BOOK: GANGREL is the sample coterie- too bad, because if there ever was group that tended to hang with their own (if anyone), it would be the Gangrel.

Overall, however, GANGREL is an outstanding addition to this series. The mostly new text (part introduced as a response to the narrator of the original) covers (as usual) the title clan's view of vampiric history and opinions of other clans and WoD creatures. The Gangrel are presented as a diverse group, often defying stereotypes but generally highly inquisitive and, of course, prone to wander. It deals with subjects like Gehenna, the political ramifications of Xaviar's recent break with the Camarilla, conspiracy theories and even Gangrel opinions about suburbs and the internet- in addition to the expected material on environmentalism, Lupines, etc. There is a very good section on the impact of the Gangrel weakness and some hints at larger mysteries, too.

Happily, there's also lots of Sabbat material- including how Sabbat Gangrel regard different Paths of Enlightenment. A follower of the Path of the Feral Heart is included in the character templates- the first template on a Path follower in the new series. (Wrong virtues, tho!) This is part of an examination of Gangrel bloodlines including some of the exotic and lost ones from DARK AGES. WOW!

I have been playing the world of Darkness system for some time now and came to realize what the clanbooks actually do for starting characters. This book not only helps in the Tabletop system, but also helps to increase the diversity of the Live Action game as well. This is a must have for those of you who are just like me and play both games to the fullest.

                5 out of 5 stars part of a series...........2007-05-13

Go figure, I started reading this series and they quite printing them...at least that's what I think happened. I found a few at the local Half Price Books, but I was still missing several of them. Well, I found them on Amazon and was very happpy to be able to finish reading the series.

3 out of 5 stars It was nothing special .......2006-05-25

Seriously it was a good book for the series but I felt that it was an ok series book a good book individually but no were near as good as the others have said, I liked the Ventrue book more then that one for the series and individually the Setite beats this book hands down (possibly slight bais since that one deals with Occult/Art dealings and the like) but really the book was slow going until the last chapter then all of this action happens and I was just left going well that is nice, sucks to be them but that is really all I wish to say because most of my arguements are plot related but either way I was just let down considering I thought this was supposed to be a fantastic book, which then instead makes me look followed to the ones that people dislike. Had this been the Series opener instead of Book 3 then I would have liked it a lot more, as is in that spot not so much. But that is just me, I am sure many would like it simply because it is the Gangrel and showing what they can do through the eyes of a relatively new vampire/kindred (which I liked)and shows the clan abilities very well instead of the paper/pencil method.

4 out of 5 stars Through An Eye, Darkly.......2004-12-21

For a change this is very much one character's tale. Ramona is a second year Gangrel, member of a tribe that is more independent than Camarilla, but less dark minded than the Sabbat. They are the wild hunters of the vampire worlds, often used by the elders for enforcement.

Ramona has never really bought into the vampire ethos, and is locked in a perpetual struggle with her beast. Her relationships with mortals and kindred are troubled. Now, her feelings for young Zhavon will drive her to finally face what she has become, at the same time that the bring her to the brink of destruction.

For the Eye of Hazimel, a true instrument of chaos, is loose in the city. Now the possession of the sculptor Leopold, the eye has little patience with vampire sensibilities. It brings insanity and ruin, and has an agenda all it's own. As vampire elders and clans struggle with events leading to a mysterious confrontation at Table Rock, Ramona must find a way to survive.

In something of a turn-about Gherbod Fleming, a long time maker of the Masquerade world, produces an enjoyable action novel. His insights into the life of the Gangrel, on of the games most troubled clan are unique. He is in tune with the grim realities of vampire life, where nothing can be trusted in the night, and sensitivity to the real nobility behind and outlaw clan give this book much of its depth.

Of course, the underlying style is still game-centric, where the novels serve the game. This means the story often makes jagged progress or gets lost in heavy detail. Flemings characters also tend to muse more often than they drink. But this is one of this series better efforts, offering a vision that will challenge many fans.

2 out of 5 stars Guess you have to like Gangrel........2003-02-27

The third in the clan novel series, this book does not even come close to being as good as the first two books in the series, Toreador and Tzimisce. It does center much more so around one vampire than the first two books, the Gangrel Ramona. She is trying to figure out who she is and what she has become.

The main plot of the series, with the Eye of Hazimel, continues to develop. Leopold, the Torry, has gone completely insane. Other elements of the New York vampires are showing up, namely the Tremere.

I didn't like this novel nearly as much as the first two. Maybe Ramona will develop as the novels progress, but for now, I could care less to read anymore about her. WHERE IS SASHA? Now she was interesting!

4 out of 5 stars An interesting look at Gangrel society.......2002-05-22

Gherbod Fleming's portrayal of the vampires in this book I found to be very close to what I had always envisioned. The book hits a few rough patches early on but it all gels really well about halfway through and you won't be able to put it down.

4 out of 5 stars The story flips.......2007-04-24

The courtly intrige has been left behind and we are thrust deep into the heart of untamed eastern europe. When i first started reading i had the thought that this book could well be the best novel of the series its only rival would be Brujah. It gave great insight into workings of the beast portraying it as almost a split personality and a voice in his head. As a online interactive chat gamer and someone thats playing a Brujah antitribu on path of feral heart this gave me great insight into the workings of the beast and how Gangrel strive to find balence with it. I think the writer benifited from a lack of constraining plots, like this this this and this has to happen and was generally given free reign to explore the nature of the the clan he is writing about and that which is at their very core, other writers have tried to tackle this to varying degrees of success. Hats off to the writer. This is a great novel though Brujah is still the best in my mind....only 3 more to go, looking forward to seeing if theres any better.

4 out of 5 stars The Beast Is Never Far Away.......2005-07-08

This is an interesting change of pace. In order to tell the Gangrel story in a setting more congenial to that vampire clan, Tim Waggoner turns from telling the extended tale of the 'Christian' vampires that control most of Western Europe. He switched sides to Jurgen's opponents, the tribes of Livonia. There, in pagan Europe, vampires are less creatures to be feared by mortals and more seen as spiritual powers to be cultivated as near gods themselves.

This is a rough world full of Tartars and Mongols - nomads and hunter-gatherers. It is a world made for the Gangrel. Nature is untamed, and the beast that lies in every vampire's breast lies much closer to the skin. Here are Qarakh, khan of his loose tribe, and Deverra, a Tremere who has turned on her own clans ways and serves as a priestess for a small Livonian village. Each has secrets, but they are bound together and now wait to see what Alexander, the ex-prince of Paris intends to do with the small army he has led into the East.

Alexander, who has made few friends in his past, has received a quest to Christianize Qarakh's countryside. Only a short while ago these primitive tribesmen defeated prince Jurgen's knights, and Alexander has even more reason to seek victory. For him success means an opportunity to retake his position as Prince of Paris. But Alexander is his own worst enemy. His proclivity for dishonesty and betrayal turns of the support of those he must depend on, and a direct confrontation with Qarakh seems unavoidable.

If you a bit tired of the courtly dialogue of the past few volumes, Gangrel should come as a breath of fresh air. These vampires are more likely to fight than orate, and the live close to nature and the earth. While Gangrel are often irritatingly self-willed, they have depth and courage. Those that cluster around Qarakh, Gangrel or not, have a natural nobility even if a rough nature hides it.

4 out of 5 stars An impressive Vampire tale.......2000-01-11

Clan Gangrel is one of my favorite clans, and was among the first that I played when I began partaking of the Vampire: The Masqureade roleplaying game. This book was quite a treat for me when I read it. The story follows a neonate Gangrel and her two companions who have very few ideas about who they are. During the course of their adventure, the heorine eventually discovers that she is a part of Clan Gangrel and must face off against one of the most horrifying monstrosities that the Kindred have ever known. This story follows strongly to the theme of the World of Darkness in which Vampire is set, with all the horror, action, danger, and loss that comes along with it. This isn't your Brad Pitt, suit and tie, Victorian style, English accent vampire. This is a story about monsters, which is what a vampire is, and how they interact with their own society.

Gangrel is one of my fav. clans and this book didn't do much in the lines of defining them.It didn't ruin them either. I liked the lupine structure to the book, but didn't you over do it?The background of the gypsies and the Gangrel gatherings were extremly interesting. Some things can help the stories, but I recommend this only if you are a true Gangrel fan; otherwise use your imagination. Of course there are a few helpful hints.

2 out of 5 stars Mediocre, neither great nor awful.......1999-08-21

The book was interesting and enlightening about some of the Gangrel's practices, but for the most part there seemed to be something lacking from the overall atmosphere to the book. It wasn't great or terrible, but I really think that White Wolf didn't quite know what kind of info they wanted to publish in these books when they made this.
