The Women's Murder Club pits four San Francisco women professionals against a serial killer who's stalking and murdering newlyweds in bestselling author James Patterson's newest thriller. Lindsay Boxer is a homicide inspector who's just gotten some very bad news. She deals with it by immersing herself in her newest case and soliciting the personal as well as professional support of her closest friend, who happens to be the city's medical examiner. The two women, along with an ambitious and sympathetic reporter and an assistant DA, form an unlikely alliance, pooling their information and bypassing the chain of command in an engaging, suspenseful story whose gruesome setup is vintage Patterson.

"What is the worst thing anyone has ever done?" the killer muses to himself early in the narrative. "Am I capable of doing it? Do I have what it takes?" Answering his own question, he embarks on a murderous spree that takes him from the bridal suite in a Nob Hill hotel to a honeymoon destination in the Napa Valley and thence to a wedding reception at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland, Ohio. Dispatching his victims on the happiest day of their lives, he purposefully leaves enough clues for his distaff trackers to discover his identity and put him behind bars. But just when the women think they've got the case all wrapped up, the killer turns the tables on them in a bloody denouement that even the most discerning reader won't see coming. Patterson, author of the popular Alex Cross mysteries, promises future adventures for the Women's Murder Club, which may give him an opportunity to develop his heroines' characters more completely and win new fans among those who prefer their detectives in high heels and lipstick. --Jane Adams

Four women--four friends--share a determination to stop a killer who has been stalking newlyweds in San Francisco. Each one holds a piece of the puzzle: Lindsay Boxer is a homicide inspector in the San Francisco Police Department, Claire Washburn is a medical examiner, Jill Bernhardt is an assistant D.A., and Cindy Thomas just started working the crime desk of the San Francisco Chronicle. But the usual procedures aren't bringing them any closer to stopping the killings. So these women form a Women's Murder Club to collaborate outside the box and pursue the case by sidestepping their bosses and giving each other a hand. The four women develop intense bonds as they pursue a killer whose crimes have stunned an entire city. Working together, they track down the most terrifying and unexpected killer they have ever encountered--before a shocking conclusion in which everything they knew turns out to be devastatingly wrong. Full of the breathtaking drama and unforgettable emotions for which James Patterson is famous, 1st to Die is the start of a blazingly fast-paced and sensationally entertaining new series of crime thrillers.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Patterson not at his best.......2007-10-05

First to Die is a great read for an airplane or when in the mood for something very light. The prose is very direct, probably on an early high school reading level. The mystery is not very hard to figure out and most readers familiar with the genre will get it long before the ending. I would not rate this as highly as Kiss the Girls or most of the Alex Cross novels. Still, you can do worse than read First to Die to kill a few hours.

5 out of 5 stars I couldn't put it down.......2007-09-27

It was actually a couple years ago that I first read this novel but I recently picked it back up and read it again and even though I knew the story line it was still a wonderful read, its suspenseful and twisted with a little side of sinister but also there is a real life appreciating lesson in the end of it all. I absolutely loved the first book...haven't gotten the other five in the series but I'm sure Ill get there because if they are anything like the first I will certainly enjoy them all. I definitely commend Mr. Patterson on his writing he is phenomenal.

4 out of 5 stars Riveting thrill ride.......2007-09-19

I had previously read When the Wind Blows and wasn't that intrigued by Mr. Patterson. Since it was more on the science fiction/fantasy side (which I'm normally not a fan of anyways) I thought I'd give this book a try. I have to say I was very impressed. It was by far one of the best mysteries I have read in quite some time. He created three-dimensional, interesting characters with emotional and physical struggles, a lot of suspense and intrigue, and kept you guessing until the very end. I thought that I had it figured out but I was wrong...

There was a little romance thrown in, with the heroine, Lindsay, falling for her partner, Chris Raleigh. But overall it was a riveting, edge of your seat, intense murder mystery/thriller. I hesitate to give it five stars because of the graphic nature and cringe-worthy details that were off-putting. Granted I understand why he described the crimes that way, they were grisly crimes but still some of the more suggestive details (i.e. position of body, etc) were grossly unnecessary. The ending was also too rushed- the epilogue especially, which seemed tacked on as an after-thought- making the intense scene unrealistic and anticlimactic. Other than that it was a thrill ride of a read and I am looking forward to reading more of the Women's Murder Club series. I am even more intrigued to see if the new TV show will be just as gripping (Fridays at 8pm on ABC starting October 12, 2007).

5 out of 5 stars Awesome....couldn't put it down........2007-08-11

I started this book in July and I am now on the fourth book in the series. I couldn't put it down and I still can't put the others down either. It was a great book and well written, totally held my attention. Loved it.

3 out of 5 stars My 1ST James Patterson book.......2007-07-31

I don't know how the title ties in with the story. The story moved slow for me in the beginning, but halfway through it picked up and moved very fast to the end, which was exciting, surprising, and had a lot of action. I'll definitely read another of Patterson's book. I liked the short chapters.

      Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Not equal to The Summer Country! .......2005-01-04

This book is the continuation of James Hetley's The Summer Country. This time around we barely ever leave The Summer Country, while in Oak's predecessor we visited the normal world quite often. The plot centers on Maureen dealing with the repurcussions of the death of Dougal and her battle with Fiona. During this process, Maureen falls into the clutches of her old friend, alcohol, which can't be good...

I only gave this book two stars because only the last fifty pages are worth reading, the rest of the book drags ON and ON. This will be worth the money for fans of The Summer Country but everyone else would be best advised to stay away from this book! Hope that helped.

4 out of 5 stars Avid Reviewer and Reader.......2004-10-21

Camelot is long gone. Merlin was not the benevolent wizard nor was Arthur the true hero. Very little about the legends are true - except that a magical place exists called the Summer Country. James Hetley has taken a modern fantasy tale and reminded us that happy endings never happen in the real world. Winter Oak is a wonderful follow-up to the Summer Country.

At the conclusion of the Summer Country, Maureen had come into her own as a witch by killing Dougal and defeating Fiona. Maureen rescued Brian from his half-sister Fiona's twisted binding and found a way to free her sister, Jo and David, Jo's boyfriend. Maureen suddenly finds herself in possession of a castle with slaves, a boyfriend, a very pissed-off dragon, powers she is just beginning to understand, and benefactress of a forest with unknown delights and dangers.

Winter Oak starts with Jo and David's return to the real world and all its troubles. Time has elapsed and Jo and David cannot just return to their lives as if nothing has happened. Too much has happened for all to be as it was. David and Jo must find a way to face all the changes and to decide if they do indeed love each other.

Childhood sexual abuse and other abuses have scarred Maureen and negatively effected Jo. Each finds a sort of solace and succor in a bottle. Of course alcohol only provides temporary relief and creates more problems. Jo is forced to reckon with her parent's relationship - the outcome of which will change everything for Jo and Maureen.

Maureen is haunted by all around her. She cannot accept Brian's love nor can she fathom why he remains. The bottle provides a means to deaden all the pain in her mind. Luckily, Maureen has the forest to support and love her unconditionally.

Brian finds himself thrust into a web of deceit and betrayal involving the Pendragons. He is unwilling forced to leave Maureen and in order to hang onto his own life. Much is revealed in his struggle to return to Maureen.

The wicked black witch Fiona lends a macabre presence in the Summer Country. Having impregnated herself with her own half-brother, Brian, she plots to destroy Maureen and Jo. Fiona crafts magic and science to bring ruin to those she feels threatened by. Fiona lies in wait, probing for weaknesses she can use to destroy Maureen, Jo, and Brian.

After reading Winter Oak, I was stunned by the depth of the continuing story started in the Summer Country. The dark, twisted, urban fantasy only expanded to another level while allowing us readers to enjoy the ride. Maureen is so burdened by all her problems that it is easy to understand how hopeless she feels. The addition of alcohol makes the scene that much more depressing. Maureen's descent into alcoholism is incredibly realistic and painful to read.

The realism of Jo and David's difficulties further validates James Hetley as not your average fantasy author. While most fantasy books rely on the fantastic to convey interesting stories, Hetley relies on the underbelly of what we all have come to believe in as real. Reality is gritty and has teeth. The Winter Oak is earthy, dark, and yet redeeming all at once. Each character plays a part in their own redemption. No one waves a wand or casts a spell that suddenly makes all their unhappiness and pain go away. Instead, magic only enhances their abilities to survive and to heal.

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent and powerful work of high fantasy.......2004-10-19

When the creatures of myth and legends were kicked off the human world they went to the Summer Country in another dimension that has portals allowing travel between the worlds. Sisters Maureen and Jo Pierce accidentally traveled into the Summer Country and learned that the blood of the Old Ones run through their veins giving them power to cast spells. Maureen fought against Fiona, the witch and her brother who she killed and a female dragon was killed with its mate vowing revenge.

Jo returns home with David to Naskaag Falls, Maine and troubles. Her mother is dying, they lost their jobs and the police don't believe her story insisting they produce Maureen and her lover Brian who stayed behind in the Summer Country. Fiona plots with the dragon to have their revenge on Maureen who has power but is drinking herself into oblivion to blot out the awful memories. Brian disappears and has to outwit the Pendragons in order to return to Maureen while Jo must come to terms with her power if she wants to find a place for herself in the Summer Country. She must also find a way for David to live there since humans are hated, unwelcome and many become slaves to the magical beings.

THE WINTER OAK, the sequel to THE SUMMER COUNTRY, is a magnificent and powerful work of high fantasy in which alliances change with the wind and nobody can be trusted because the bonds of fellowship are weak. Maureen accepts the power more readily than Jo does while Fiona proves a worthy adversary who underestimates her enemies; she is so evil that readers will hope she gets what she deserves.

4 out of 5 stars The ghosts come out to play while the plot thickens........2001-04-17

An apparent clue in the controversial missing girl case that Ethan Proctor's Black Oak took on leads to England and a unique haunting. What Proctor began to suspect in 'Episode' 2: The Hush of Dark Wings is confirmed here. Dark forces of some kind have marked him, but for what? The story arc plot grows thicker, the red herrings swarm, and the whole things builds to a nifty sword fight between man and ghost. Black Oak 'Episode' 3: Winter Knight is yet another delightfully creepy tale that will leave you begging for the next series entry.

      5 out of 5 stars Charles Grant = Underrated.......2000-06-02

Charles Grant is the most underrated writer in the horror fantasy/sci-fi genre. His body of work is ubiquitous, ranging from hard core horror to subtle dark fantasy. Winter Knight was a pleasure to read, and the Black Oak series is the most productive series going. "Hunting Ground," the forthcoming installment in the series, should prove to be another fine read.

4 out of 5 stars Fun, quick read.......2000-03-21

Let's face it: this Black Oak series is just plain fun! GENESIS and THE HUSH OF DARK WINGS start out the series. Grant introduces us to Ethan Proctor, the brooding but brilliant leader of Black Oak Security. If there is a creepy twist, Proctor and company are sure to find it!

WINTER KNIGHT finds Proctor in the quaint town of Pludbury, Englad. The townsfolk readily accept the legend of one of the town's forefathers who will grant them their deepest desires in exchange for their souls. Proctor, of course, digs and digs to discover the mystery of the resident ghost.

This series is imaginative with Grant's patented writing. If you are new to Grant, these are an excellent way to get an idea of the depth of his writing. Besides, each is so much fun to read that you certainly won't regret the investment!

5 out of 5 stars black oak, winter knight.......1999-11-27

The book was wonderfull just like his past books in this series. This book is not only thrilling to read but also keeps his readers wanting more, which in my case. Can't wait for the next one to come!

4 out of 5 stars Grant's best so far in the Black Oak series.......1999-09-22

While Black Oak #1, Genesis, was an intriguing introduction, and Black #2 was a bit confusing, I have to admit that I enjoyed Winter Knight the most. Clear, spooky, and more inspired.

              Book Description

NEW IN PAPER! Coming in September 2003 In winter, when the only things growing seem to be icicles and irritability, what pleasures exist for a gardener or for anyone who lives in a northern climate? In his distinctive daybook, Weathering Winter, Carl Klaus reminds readers that the season of brown twigs and icy gales is just as much a part of the year as when tulips open, tomatoes thrive, and pumpkins color the brown earth. From the first cold snap of late December 1994 to the first outdoor planting of onion sets and radish seeds in mid-March 1995, Klaus kept track of snow falling, birds flocking, soups simmering, gardening catalogs arriving, buds swelling, and seed trays coming to life.

Gardeners, lovers of the out-of-doors, and weather watchers will recognize themselves in the ways in which Klaus has come to terms with the harsh climate and chilly truths that winter embodies. His constant, careful checks on the temperature and on the geraniums overwintering in the attic, his contentment in the basil- and garlic-flavored tomato sauce he cooked up from last season's crops, and his walks with his wife in the bitter chill of starry January nights reflect the pull between indoors and out, the contrast between the beauty and the cruelty of the season.

                    Description:
This study explores the influence of temperature on the growth of six northern range margin (NRM) tree species in the Hudson River Valley (HRV). The HRV has excellent geographic and floristic qualities to study the influence of climate change on forested ecosystems. Indices of radial growth for three populations per species are developed and correlated against average minimum and maximum monthly temperatures from 1897 to 1994. Only positive correlations to temperature are considered for this analysis. Principal component analysis (PCA) is performed on chronologies over the entire HRV and at four subregions. PCA reveals a strong common signal among populations at subregional and regional scales. January temperatures most limit growth at the ecosystem level, supporting the hypothesis that winter temperatures may control vegetational ecotones. Surprisingly, growth of the oak-hickory ecosystem is most limited by January temperatures only in the southern half of the study region. Chestnut and white oak are the primary species driving the geographic pattern. As winter xylem embolism is a constant factor for ring-porous species, snow cover and its interaction on fine root mortality may be the leading factors of the pattern of temperature sensitivity. Species-specific differences in temperature sensitivity are apparent. Atlantic white-cedar (AWC) and pitch pine are more sensitive to the entire winter season (December-March) while oak and hickory are most sensitive to January temperatures. AWC is most sensitive species to temperature. Chestnut and white oak in the HRV are more sensitive to winter temperature than red oak. Pignut hickory has the most unique response with significant relations to late growing season temperatures. Interestingly, AWC and pitch pine are sensitive to winter temperatures at their NRM while oak and hickory are not. Our results suggest that temperature limitations of growth may be species and phylogenetically specific. They also indicate that the influence of temperature on radial growth at species and ecosystem levels may operate differently at varying geographic scales. If these results apply broadly to other temperate regions, winter temperatures may play an important role in the terrestrial carbon cycle.
