Book Description
Since the 1960 publication of her first novel, The Country Girls, award-winning Irish writer Edna O'Brien has been both celebrated and maligned. Praised for her lyrical prose and vivid female characters and attacked for her frank treatment of sexuality and alleged sensationalism, O'Brien and her work seem always to spawn controversy, including the past banning in Ireland of several of her works. O'Brien's attention to "women's" concerns such as sex, romance, marriage, and childbirth has often relegated her to critical neglect at best and, at worst, outright contempt. This essay collection promises to be a long overdue critical reevaluation and exciting rediscovery of her oeuvre.
Wild Colonial Girl situates O'Brien in Irish contexts that allow for an appraisal of her significant contribution to a specifically Irish women's literary tradition while attesting to the potency of writing against patriarchal conventions. Each chapter's clear and detailed readings of O'Brien's fiction build a convincing case for her literary, political, and cultural importance, providing an invaluable critical guide for an enriched appreciation of O'Brien and her work.
Book Description
`I long to study the purely national, natural character of an Irishwoman' When Horatio, the son of an English lord, is banished to his father's Irish estate as punishment for gambling debts and dissipated living, he adopts the persona of knight errant and goes off in search of adventure. On the wild west coast of Connaught he finds remnants of a romantic Gaelic past a dilapidated castle, a Catholic priest, a deposed king and the king's lovely and learned daughter, Glorvina. In this setting and among these characters Horatio learns the history, culture and language of a country he had once scorned, but he must do so in disguise for his own English ancestors are responsible for the ruin of the Gaelic family he comes to love. Written after the Act of Union, The Wild Irish Girl (1806) is a passionately nationalistic novel and a founding text in the discourse of Irish nationalism. The novel proved so controversial in Ireland that Sydney Owenson, later Lady Morgan, was put under surveillance by Dublin Castle.

Customer Reviews:
Beautiful illustrations and timeless stories.......2007-03-26
I took a chance when I bought this book. I like hardcover books with beautiful illustrations and this definitely meets both criteria. I grew up with Birbal stories and they have a very fond place in my heart. He is the clever court council whom the evil ministers are trying to get rid of, but with his wit, he manages, not only to foil their attempts, but also impress Akbar the king with his clever mind. The stories are just like I remember them, but what makes this book priceless is the illustrations. I believe pictures help us transport ourselves into the time in which the stories are set and the stories remain with us through our lives. I am sure my son will love this book as much as I have.
Great introduction to Indian Tales.......2004-05-31
My seven year old loved these tales about clever Birbal. A great way to introduce her to a different culture. Also good morals in the tales
Great Bedtime Book for School-Age Kids.......2004-02-01
This is one of those books that both parents and children will equally enjoy. My children are older now, but we still read together at night as a family "closing ceremony." An intelligent, funny book this like one just makes the experience so much more memorable. Our family reads a lot, but we've never read anything like The Birbal Tales. It is literally outstanding in its combination of history, world culture, cleverness, and surprise endings.
ENCHANTING AND CLEVER!.......2001-05-23
As an expectant mother, I am already thinking about how I will teach wisdom to my son. The Birbal Tales are not only chock full of wise and clever pearls, but are totally charming at the same time! I have ordered ten copies to give to other expectant couples and my friends who already have children! When will we see Birbal cartoons on TV or video???!!! Soon, I hope!

Average.......2007-06-21
I picked this book up due to the online line reviews and I was somewhat disappointed. The main characters were good but I think the action was very slow due to the fact that the author had some many volumes in mind for the series. Overall I didn't dislike the book but I would not really suggest it to a friend and it didn't interest me enough to buy any of the sequels.
An Epic tale that will surely please.......2007-04-01
I haven't finished the series yet but so far I have loved all the books up to book four. That is where I left off and have just ordered the remainder of the seven book series. King's Dragon is a rich tale with great characters. I would recommend this series highly. I have read and reread the first four books and they never fail to please.
Beautiful Series.......2007-02-19
Kate Elliott creates a complex world filled with strange creatures, forbidden love, politics, corruption, and everything needed to make a strong science fiction novel. The storyline is complex, and each book needs to be read right after the preceding one, but it is well worth all 7 books. By far one of the best series I have ever read in my life, and I would recommend it to anyone who loves tales with dragons and strange creatures. Bravo Kate, these books in the Crown of Stars are intelligent and amazing.
Elliot is a mesmerizing writer.......2006-11-17
Even when I was gnashing my teeth in frustration at the slow development of the plot, I kept reading because the characters are so finely drawn that it was impossible not to keep reading. I was familiar with Elliott's writing from her previous series BOOKS OF THE JARAN, and knew that no matter if it seemed like a digression, there would be a reason for the sidebars. It is entirely possible that much of the plot will not come together until volume five of the saga. In the meantime, I was fascinated by Alain, Liath, & Sanglant(I think they are the major main protagonists, but there could be more); even the Eika and Sabella with her tame sorceress, Biscop Antonia were fascinating. (I'm sure Frater Hugh, now Abbot Hugh, will turn up again in the pantheon of villians).I have PRINCE OF DOGS (vol 2) and am ready to see what the next step will be.
Hard to explain!.......2006-08-13
Where to start.....I have a hard time describing this book, It is so involved and I can't even say if I love it or hate it, but I couldn't put it down either! I think I kept reading it because I wanted so much for something good to happen to the main characters. I kept thinking "she has to get out of this situation!" Finally after three fourths of the book it does. Then I start waiting for her to get some courage and stop acting like a beat down puppy. But instead of getting frustrated with the book and giving up on it I keep reading! Why? Iam not sure! I must like something about it because I couldn't put it down I'm just not sure what that something is yet!

Why Kings and Queens Don't Wear Crowns.......2007-04-12
Great book. Brings back memories for me as I was a yearly visitor to Norway. I remember seeing the King and Queen getting married and have followed their lives and the lives of the Crown Prince and Princess. It is a loving and tender book. I can envision the real people that it is talking about.
Why Kings and Queens Don't Wear Crowns.......2007-01-16
Excellent. It is everything I thought it would be.
Priceless Heritage!.......2006-05-13
My daughter just received this book from her Godmother as a birthday present. Being that our family has a strong Norwegian heritage and background, it meant a great deal to me to be able to pass along such a valuable piece of "family history." I fell in love with the book so much that it drove me to tears! Not only is it a phenominal "fairy tale" story that is well written, it is also extremely educational about the Norwegian Royal family and their lineage. The version my daughter received also had an accompanying CD with the story read by the Princess herself. It makes it very easy to let her play the story and follow along in the book herself. I would recommend this for every little boy or girl that dreams of being a prince or princess....except if you are a personal friend of mine. Then, don't buy it because you will probably be getting it from us for your upcoming birthday!
A Delightful, Royal Story!.......2006-04-24
I was privileged to meet Princess Martha Louise on her recent U.S. book tour, and she was so delightful and charming. She read her story to our group in her enthusiastic, dramatic voice and then sat for hours autographing the book. If you're able to purchase the most recent edition with the CD (which she narrates) then it is an extra-special, great treat for kids of all ages.
A wonderful book about Real Princesses.......2006-04-16
This is a wonderful book about real princesses and how they live. The book is based upon the First King of Norway, who was crowned in 1905. It is a fascinating tale that intertwines history with fiction. We saw Princess Martha Louise read the book and know why the Norwegians love their Royal family. She was poised and happy to chat with our kids as she signed their books. A treat of a lifetime with a book of a lifetime.

Crown and Thistle - Captivating.......2006-03-21
In reading this book, one wonders if Janie Brians the Author, might really have some kind of proof of the existence of these Royal Twins. After all, the Author uses actual historical events to develope the interesting idea regarding Mary, Queen of Scots and her heirs.
I found the book not only entertaining but captivating and very intriguing.
I hope to read more of this Author's books in the future.
Highly Recommend this Impressive Debut..........2005-08-24
I thoroughly enjoyed this gripping story, Legend of the Crown & Thistle, by Janie Brians.
This story takes us from the memories of adventures in our youth to the excitemnet of rediscovering them as adults. Be transported back in time to find the secret identity of royal twins. Feel their pain as one of these brothers tells about their mysterious life and the heartache it brings them. A life story told through a diary found centuries later.
As Anne uncovers the twins story, she and her sister, Lizzie, are caught up in their own dangerous adventure. One friend already dead and another in deep trouble, Anne and Lizzie search for the truth behind stolen artwork and ancient artifacts. Traveling from their home in the Bahamas to as far as Scotland, these sisters deal with treachery and deceit, finding courage and true love along the way.
The love of family shines throughout the book. As Lizzie puts it, "Family, whatever form it takes, is one of the most important things in life." How true this is! The lives of the twins of long ago and the sisters intertwine as they search for answers.
The twisting plot keeps us turning the pages; I couldn't put it down! Find out if these two young women make it through the dangers to find the answers to the mysteries, murder, and even buried treasure in this thrilling book, Legend of the Crown & Thistle.
