House of Burgess's.......2007-09-13
Anthony Burgess was quite a character. Anyone familiar in the least with his life and work or who has read, say, the first volume of his Autobiography is aware of his splendid cussedness. He was also polymathic and erudite in the extreme. He's one of the few writers who read and reread and had (as well as any human being is capable) a grasp of Finnegans Wake - As his alter ego, Crabbe, muses to himself here, "Everything in Finnegans Wake made sense eventually, if one waited for it."---He was also, of course, a gifted composer and many other things.
The motive for my mentioning this personal information is that this "Malayan Trilogy" is highly autobiographical, and it adds verisimilitude (ach, what a dashed clunky but apt word) and zest to the reading of it to know a bit about its author. But, of course, one really need not know a thing about Burgess to enjoy his work.
In it, Burgess, in the form of Crabbe and other characters, doesn't fail to put his interests in language and musical composition etc. on display. But what really makes this book more than a pale copy of a Somerset Maugham work - Crabbe reflects, at one point, that he is the epitome of a character out of a Maugham short story - is the cantankerous humour and brio which enliven the book. It's not MERELY the gin-sodden Brit expats being swallowed into the jungle to which they came, ostensibly, to bring the "rule of law", but also a glowingly absurd and tragic account of the interactions between people and peoples, between husbands and wives, between rulers and ruled, all written in a way that, well, only Burgess could write.
Yes, I agree with the other reviewers, the Amaricanisation of what is now called Malaysia is a sad thing. - No more eccentrics in their linen flannels quaffing gin on their verandahs before noontide. - But, truly, the saddest thing is that there aren't any writers of Burgess's stripe around now to chronicle such things so richly.
A Must Have for Ex-pats and Students of Asian Affairs.......2002-12-29
This ranks as one of the funniest books ever written, while being at the same time a social history of Malaysia, or Malaya as it was known under British Rule. The first book of the trilogy deals with the last days of British colonialism (hence the title "The Long Day Wanes") through the misadventures of a remittance man named Nabby Adams, a civil servant, his wife, household staff, and local government characters. The second novel follows the civil servant and his failing marriage through the guerilla years in the struggling nation, and the third is The Coming of the Americans. These three events have been a sort of template for late 20th century global affairs. It's a tight trilogy that reflects historical and social changes through its characters in the satirical literary slapstick characteristic of Burgess at his best. If you've never read Burgess, this is the place to start. It will bring you an appreciation of "where he's coming from," literally: it is based upon his experiences as a British Civil Servant in the waning days of the Empire (upon which the sun set 30 June 1997 with the cession of Hong Kong to Red China). This review was originally published in June 1997 and with some site changes, my name got lost and Amazon was unable to transfer the review with my name attached, so this is a reprint of that earlier one.
Funny but true.......2002-10-29
One thing I have always admired about Anthony Burgess's novels is the compassion that he quietly conveys for his characters. They are all flawed: imperfect archetypes, reluctant saviours, apologetic swearers, gin mixed in with the orange crush. And we recognize ourselves in them all for this essential humanity, their endless struggle or acquiescence, for or against their unlikely fates. Burgess's humour is rueful and sharp: wistful disappointment and calm despair are the backdrop for his characters' heroic protests or desperate affairs.
He also writes with a playfulness and intelligence that shines through every page. His sentences are as angular and memorable as his characters. His debts to Joyce and Shakespeare unite in his own unique style.
The Long Day Wanes shows much of Burgess at his best, his setting and characters memorable vehicles for their fates and larger themes. The setting in Malaya is a world apart: inner struggles against human desires, social forces against cultural divides. While writing of a world that fast disappears, he tells us a story old as the Malayan jungle.
Fine Literary Satire About Ambiguous Future of Asia.......2002-08-19
I found this an absorbing, literary read, and like the other reviewers I first read this while living out East (in the 90s - Hong Kong & S'pore). I am amazed on re-reading it how many of the actions and attitudes of the characters - British, Malay, Indian, Chinese, American - along with so many of the secondary details, were still relevant and recognizable among Easterners and Western expats of today. The main story makes fine reading, too. In fine language, Anthony Burgess (who was a colonial civil servant in Malaya and spoke Malay) describes the last few years of British rule and the troubled handover to independance. There is a lot of enjoyable detail about life in the Malay peninsula at the time - many good scenes and vignettes, but what comes across clearly by the end is the uneasiness and ambiguity felt by Burgess about the future of independant Malaya and Singapore - he is worried about the hatred of the various ethnic communities for each other and the slim hold of British law, also the lack of interest among educated locals (besides the ones with marketable skills and talents who emigrated to new lives and identities in the First World) for anything other than technological development. Many of these concerns have sadly been born out - the split between Malaysia and Singapore, the second class status of the Malays in S'pore, of the Chinese in Malaysia, of the Indians in both places, the soulessness of the modern nightlife of KL and S'pore. Law in Malaysia is today a farce - witnewess the treatment of the politician Anwar, once Prime Minister Mahathir's 2nd-in-command, put in the dock seemingly forever for what was known in Singapore as "the endless buggery trial"; and Singapore under Harry Lee Kuan Yew has an even worse legal system (read Christopher Lingle's account, *Singapore's Authoritarin Capitalism*, or Francis Seow's, *A Dissident in Lee Kuan Yew's Prisons*). But this is a vivid, funny and moving novel above all - perhaps especially so if you have any connection with that part of the world, but of course it works brilliantly also if you're just looking for a good, cracking read. The thing I remember thinking after reading this was how sad it is that so many talented Malaysians and Singaporeans emigrate to other countries to get away from the sad realities at home. Burgess forsaw some of this, as well as much more. This is a classic about Malaya/Singapore the same way Paul Theroux's *Kowloon Tong* so accurately describes Hong Kong at the end (for which it was given the honor of being banned by China). Time for a Tiger!
The Sun Sets on the British Empire.......2002-01-10
Anthony Burgess' brilliant satire and mastery of linguistics become apparent and used at their best in this trilogy about the final days of British imperialism.
Burgess' use of social satire contextually set in the lives of a few warped individuals (as he did in Honey for the Bears, A Clockwork Orange, the Enderby tales and others)returns in this edgy but brilliant and amussing trilogy relating the end of Bristish imperialism on the Asian continent.
He runs with themes such as the predjudice of the white Europeans, and the reverse predjudice of the people that they had formally ruled over. These stories talk about a civil servent working as a teacher and trying to make a change in the lives of people who are already changing their own world as they give the boot the their one time British task masters.
The teacher turned administrator, Victor Crabbe, tries desperately to keep control of his own eroding life as he sees the rotting of the systems created by the British many years before. His own fall is much like the one that the British empire took, and like the workers in the empire: he tries to help and reform things after it is too late for him to cause any positive effect.
Crabbe wants to unite the different Asian ethnic groups that are taking control of Malaya (Malaysia now), but the only thing that they can agree upon is their hatred for the white man and also their hatred of each other.
This tale is edgy and gritty but at the same time, Burgess' wonderful wit and humor come shining through. Tragic and sad one minute, and absurdly funny the next, the one thing that "The Long Day Wanes" always has is brilliance and insight into the human condition.
A delightful and moving trilogy, "The Long Day Wanes" runs with Burgess' style in that he constantly plays with dialect and word games. The comedy of language and the way that people communicate (or fail to do so) is a constant theme in Anthony Burgess' work, and this trilogy makes sure to keep that alive and well; even if it is only a small facet of this masterpiece.

Wonderful study bible.......2007-06-02
I did a review of this same bible published by GEM--it appears that there is a new distributor?? Anyway, this is a fabulous study bible. It is the King James Version minus the thees, thous, and est verb endings. Other less well understood words have definitions at the end of the verse. This bible contains volumes of information ranging from history of the bible to end times prophecy. It is worth buying for the supplementary material alone, if you already have other bibles.
It is a big, heavy bible that is somewhat cheap in construction, but is still a remarkable value given the amount of good information you get with it!! The print is very large and clear, the paper decent.
This is a terrific bible--get one if you possibly can.
Great content; lesser quality.......2007-05-13
The content and way this Bible is put together is SUPERB. However, the quality of the binding/overall product is a little on the "cheap" side (but if you consider the very reasonable price, that is not so bad.) Would benefit from being in a cover is the main thing.
Having the words of God in the OT in red is a big help.

The Sword Bible - KJVER Study Bible - Based on the 1611 KJV - Special Margin Edition
The KJVER Sword Bible text is based on the beloved 1611 King James Version with minor word changes to make the text easier to read and understand. The KJVER does not change any doctrine or meaning but has merely helps to explain the text through minor word updates. For example: "Thee" is changed to "You" and "believest" to believe. An index of every word change is included in the KJVER so that you can reference the old English and the changes.
Text highlighted in red: This Bible uniquely red letters the places in the Old Testament where God Himself speaks as well as uses the traditional red lettering of the words of Christ in the New Testament.

Special Margin Study Guide.
The Sword have a unique easy to use margin study guide with over 90 topics from which to choose. This margin study guide allows the reader to go from cover-to-cover using the pure word of God as their study. There are many other study helps too numerous to list. To name just a few are: a topical concordance, maps, earthquake charts, flood information, the chronology of the bible (by Dr. Floyd Jones), Bible and Science (by Dr. Henry Morris), guide to the laws of the Bible, Jewish calendar, a survey of Daniel's 70 weeks, land and people of the Bible, the time of the patriarchs, judges and kings, and on and on.
The Received Text
Another primary difference between the KJV Easy Reading and other versions on the market is it follows the Received Text. The Received Text is what the church fathers have used for nearly 400 years. The Easy Reading follows the King James text almost word for word merely updating language. Among the many reasons for this is it allows one who has learned English as a second language to have an understanding of the scriptures without thee's and thous'. Please note this has all been done without changing one word of doctrine or touching deity.
Difficult Term Definitions
Underlined words are defined at the end of the verse in a different typeface. When an underlined word occurs more than once per column, it is defined generally in the first and last occurrence in the text column. The explanatory words are not necessarily to be understood as alternate translations, nor as corrective translations. These words, however, will often open up the meaning of a word or verse that often has been otherwise not understood or misunderstood.
Superscript P's
Many wanted the reliability of the King James Bible but were unfamiliar or uncomfortable with many of the old English forms and words. The King James Easy-Reading Bible changes all second person singular pronouns to their modern equivalents: thee (you), thy (your), thine (yours), and thyself (yourself). To distinguish the plural pronouns from the singular ones, the King James Easy-Reading Bible places a superscript p (meaning plural) after each plural second person pronoun. Accordingly, the old English forms yield to the modern equivalents: ye (you p ), you (you p ), your (your p ), yours (yours ), and yourselves (yourselves ). Whenever these forms reflect the name of deity, they begin with a capital letter.

Fantastic Bible if accuracy doesn't matter.......2006-04-04
I loved this Bible with all it's helps, (see other reviews for list of helps) I thought it was about time that the words of G-d were written in red to give the same importance as Jesus' words. I really loved the cover because I didn't want my Bible to look like everyone elses (it has a large sword on it and instead of saying THE BIBLE it reads WORD OF G-D). The large print is fantastic and there is enough room in the margin to even put your notes. I also liked the fact that if there was a quote from another area of the Bible that it was boxed and told you where that quote came from so you didn't have to dig to find it. Here is the only problem literally that I have found with this Bible and that there is misprints and typos and even in one particular verse a word was added, and a few references had forgot either a set of numbers to look up the verse or which book it was in such as Kings (1 or 2?) in one particular reference the verse was not there because the chapter was not there I had thought maybe transposed and searched many ways but could not find that particular reference. So you end up constantly checking with another Bible to see if what you are seeing is correct. I had contacted GEM publishing but had not rceived word back. IF accuracy doesn't matter this Bible is for You. Perhaps you will be more fortunate and the errors are corrected, if that is the case this really is a FANTASTIC BIBLE!!The question then is are you willing to spend the money without seeing it first to find out if they have corrected it!
Needs to be Completely Redesigned.......2006-02-11
The Sword Study Bible King James Version has its good and bad points.Off the bat, I prefer the King James Easy Reading Version much better than this, but that is neither here nor there. This Bible has a lot of helps, and nice, large print.
In the 'Con' department, it has the words of God in both Testaments in a bright, fire-engine red which needs to be toned down. The cover is absolutely gross, with what appears to be a hand-drawn sword, and large script writing, everything in gold, on the front cover. IMHO, all this needs to be totally eliminated. The Bible is also very large and very heavy, and I can't see a lot of people shlepping this tacky-looking thing around. As I stated, it has its good and bad points. The choice is up to the buyer.
Book Description
When he met the laird's daughter, Cait, Dylan Matheson found something to fight and live for in 18th-century Scotland that he hadn't found in the 21st. But then Cait was murdered, leaving him to raise their two children alone and live a quiet life as a farmer.
But now, Dylan must once again take up arms against the hated British-unaware that he's being manipulated by Morrighan, the goddess of war, who wants to change the course of history...

Read the First Two First.......2004-01-06
I picked this up because on the cover it is compared to Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series. Indeed, there are many similarities: time travel from the 20th century to 18th century Scotland, the Jacobite Rebellion, romance, etc. One more similarity: I think it would be more enjoyable had I read the first two books in the series first. Unfortunately it did not say on the cover that it was 3rd of 3. I thought it was the first.
That said, it was still a good read, and I have ordered the first two to make up for my not reading them first. Dylan is a hero we can relate to, with passion for his wife (sadly deceased in the book) and his two children. He has also traveled through time and chosen to stay in the 18th century (see another Gabaldon resemblance?). He attempts to make a difference in the outcome of the Rising, as he has knowledge of how things will end.
Bottom line, I wish I had read the first two first!! I hope that reading them will make this book seem even better!
Excellent histoical Fantasy.......2003-07-02
He is a man from another time and another place but fairy magic brought Dylan Matheson to Ciorran in the Scottish Highlands decades before the final Jacobite defeat at Culloden. He fell in love with the laird's daughter and after much hardship and many adventures, he married her. Their union produced two children before his precious Cait was murdered by her abusive first spouse.
Dylan has come to realize his home is with Clan Ciorran and he doesn't even want the fairy Sinann to try to return him to his own time. This is just as well because the bumbling fairy believes Dylan is the only one who can prepare the clan for the hard times ahead. Before Dylan can deal with his enemies (both English and Scottish) he must first defeat Morrighan, the Celtic goddess of war who wants to know the future and will use any means at her disposal to force Dylan into giving up that information.
Cross Sharon Kay Penman with Mercedes Lackey and Judith Tarr and readers will understand that the novel SWORD OF KING JAMES is historical romantic fantasy at it's very best. Hearts will go out to the beleaguered hero who still mourns his true love while trying to move the clan in the direction he wants it to go. J. Adrian Lee has created something wondrous with this haunting novel.

Highly Recommended!.......2007-03-06
If you are like me, you probably have many Bibles, many Study Bibles, and would like one Bible that has basically everything you need. The Sword Bible has everything you need in a single Bible. It has a concordance, articles about prophecy, articles about the creation, and many study helps on various topics, information about Jesus, the names of God, maps, and too many other things to list.
Here is what I like best: though it is listed as a 'Large Print' Bible, it has larger print than all of the Giant Print Bibles I own, except for my Super Giant Print Bible. It says 12.7 point type, but it looks bigger, and is easier to read than the 14 point type in two of my Giant Print Bibles. The second thing that I'm very pleased with is that it is a true easy to read KJV Bible. Unlike the NKJV Bible, it does not retranslate passages and change the meaning of passages. The Sword Easy Reading Bible is a true KJV, Only updating some clearly listed words, and only giving the defintion in textual notes of outdated or poorly understood words. This is the only true KJV update I've seen. All other so-called updates change words like "hell" to "hades", and insert other words that do not belong in the text. For those who believe that only the KJV is accurate and dependable among all the Bible versions--I think you will be pleased and satisfied with the Sword Easy Reading KJV.
There is not much on the negative side to this Bible. I think they could have made the bonded leather cover a bit thicker, and perhaps packaged it in a box rather than a slipcover. I believe they need to make this wonderful Bible available in a mid-range size for those who don't need large/giant print. This is a big Bible, not something you are going to tote around much. But it is a one-volume Bible that is easy to read, easy on the eyes, and also a study Bible.
Note that this edition comes in two colors. Black is isbn: 0966890736 The other color is purple, so beware which color you are ordering.
absolutely and AWSOME version of the Bible.......2007-01-22
This is the only version I know of that lists the words of God in red also, not just the words of Jesus. It's really great!
Also... the picture listed is of the cardboard slide-over box that the Bible comes in... the Bible is actually leather-bound in either black, purple, or red/burgundy; and has a gold-etched sword with the words "Sharper than a two-edged sword" on it, hence the name 'the sword Bible'... above that it also has the title "the Word of God" written in etched gold caligraphy. this Bible is available with and without finger indexing for the different books of the Bible.
I wish Amazon would tell us or give us a choice as to which version we're getting black, red, purple, indexed, or not indexed...

the text is small, yes... but it is the entire Bible both new and old testaments in one binding.... the letters of God and Jesus are in red... there is a silk bookmark attached.... very durable construction... there is no better pocket book that I've seen.
If you want a Bible to carry with you everywhere, this is it!
The print is Impossible.......2006-02-11
I ordered this Bible, and was expecting a 'sorta' smaller edition of their large, lumbering, cumbersome Sword Study Bible. What I got was a Bible that I immediately returned because the print was so tiny that it was impossible to read.
'Nuff said.
