5 out of 5 stars "Some Sunday" will warm your heart........2006-04-01

In Butter Scotch blues we met Sandy, Martha, Britney and Janice. Where does life take you after tragedy strikes? At 34 Sandy found the love of her life and at 36, after only two months of marriage her husband Adrian was gone. As we know in "Butter Scotch Blues," Sandy lost her husband Adrian from AIDS it was a powerful kind of hurting that left her wary of ever loving again. Sandy's Feelings are re-awakened by Adrian's brother Winston right when Sandy thinks she's going to loose it in walks Randall a contractor who remodels her basement who also renovates her heart.

I really enjoyed this book. Margaret Johnson Hodge paints New York City with the vivid strokes of a master. She has written NYC as the fifth character in this novel. The sounds the smells the tastes are all in there. But most of all she takes a serious issue and shows it from different, interesting yet realistic points of views.

A good sequel should let the characters grow and Margaret does that with finesse, she took these characters to another level. You share each ladies struggle and you share their victories. The characters were so real they seemed to slip inside of you. She presented real issues about addiction, low self esteem and the fear of AIDS, but she never let the drama overshadow the characters. As they reached a new plateau in their lives and in their friendship, you were right there with them. Truly identifiable, "Some Sunday" will warm your hearts and will live up to all your expectations.

I read this book when it was first released and happened to be flipping through her new titles and came across it again. I automatically remember thoroghly enjoying this book. Characters are entertaining and the book is well written. I would highly recommend and don't forget to read Butterscotch first although I think this is better.

5 out of 5 stars Who we are........ and who we yet to become........................2003-10-27

OH MY.........

This sequel was perfect from start to finish. Margaret Johnson-Hodge does a splendid job picking up the pieces of our 4 ladies.

Sandy...a new widow, who falls for the comforts of her brother-in-law in order to safe guard herself from the hurt of loving the handy man Randall whose fear has him running from her.

Masterful Martha...the brillant A.D.A finally finds out that she can't live in a bottle and she wants more than her badge and Calvin is just the man to give it to her.

Janice...a crazy beauty finally realizes that she isn't okay and gets the help she needs in order to finally become a whole person

Big Britany...courageous, pregnant, and with a newly gained attitude and wits learns to hold it all together, home, hubby, health, and baby

These women are all learning to clean out the clutter that has plagued their lives and are slowly working in order to get to the good part. I didn't cry in this book but I was thrilled that "my girls" are moving full circle.

5 out of 5 stars The turning point........2003-10-06

An excellent follow-up to BUTTERSCOTCH BLUES, SOME SUNDAY picks up a little after one year has passed, and Sandy Hutchinson is still greiving after the loss of her husband, Adrian, because of his contracting the AIDS virus from his ex-wife. The repair of the house they shared together bring into her life Randall, a carpenter and renovator who owns his own business, and after a few awkward dates, a little piece of Sandy's heart. It's during this time that Adrian's brother, Winston, has shared his buried feelings for his sister-in-law. He doesn't want her to forget his brother, but he does want her to start over with him in her life. The best part of this story is that the triangle is filled with real feelings and fears of things that they don't fully understand. Another plus is that the players in this plot are not branded "good" or "bad", because each one has traits that we may not always agree with, and that makes them human. Add best friends Martha, who is trying to stay in control of her relationship with the use of a know-it-all attitude and alcohol. Janice, who is driving her man away with her obsessive streak of finding proof her faithful boyfriend is constantly cheating on her. Last, Britney, who is unexpectantly pregnant and find the well running dry on her and the hubby's finances, due to his insistance on not letting her work, so she can be a stay-at-home mom. One of the more consistant novels on the market, it's also one of the most romantic in both heart and head. A job well done!

4 out of 5 stars Good Sunday Reading........2003-09-13

This was an excellent sequel to butterscotch blues. Although it seems as if Sandy will never find true happiness.I would have also liked to have seen Britney's character more developed. Because even though life is not always a bowl of cherries she seems to be the one handling it better than all four of the sister friends. Janice makes you want to come through the pages again and smack her, while Martha is maintaining her life but is battling a horrible addiction. This book still reminds us that our closest friends are sometimes there for you when family is not.

4 out of 5 stars Historic Book Still Important Today.......2007-07-06

This book was a leading influence in religion education (i.e. Sunday Schools) from around a century ago. It continues to provide insights on how moral education may be implemented. Noting that "Jesus declared that the end of the education of the human soul is to live in harmony with the will of man", this book prescribes the virtues of politeness, morality, and humility as the goals of all civilization. The author sees teaching as a creative process that transforms a student into a new being. He urges that instruction reach the will of students and leads them towards proper living. "Character is God's currency" is what this book declares.

The author was a leading figure in forming education policies as well as religious instruction. He served a term as Pennsylvania's Governor where his pacifist sentiments were tested by the necessity that he serve as Commander in Chief of the Pennsylvania National Guard (in his role as Governor) during World War I. This book is informative to both students of religious instruction as well as understanding the thoughts of a man prior to being called to handle his conflicting views of resisting violence versus his duty to administer

The material is presented in a way that is easily understandable for a therapist without a background in chemisty or biology. The author looks at the whole person, rather than simply a physiological reaction to a drug.

                  5 out of 5 stars A must-have for ALL practitioners!.......2005-08-31

MD or non-MD, this is a keeper. Most psychopharm books (a number of which are gathering dust on my shelf) adopt either a strictly-allopathic medical approach or a strident anti-medication stance. This book manages to avoid BOTH "political correctness" and histrionics. It's an honest-but-no-axe-to-grind look at ALL aspects of psychopharmacological treatment as it relates to counseling. Moreover, it's short, readable and even entertaining in places. I found some of the biochemistry a bit overwhelming at first, but don't give up - it's one of the RARE professional/educational books I've actually read from cover to cover. This one won't be gathering any dust.

The authors are quick to acknowledge that some of the med info may quickly become outdated. However, in addition to well-researched biomedical info, Drs Ingersoll and Rak present the "bigger picture" of psychotropic medication that won't be going away anytime soon: issues like social pressure to take (or not take) medication, economics, direct-to-consumer advertising and FDA processes. They even touch on stickier topics like psychoactive drugs, herbaceuticals, and the ethical dilemmas that arise when counselors can be held legally liable for med-related concerns but must avoid all appearance of "practicing medicine without a license."

Most remarkably to me, the authors manage to challenge the Western "magic pill" mindset without apology but also without med-bashing. This book includes clear, helpful tools like side-effect profiles, diagnostic indicators associated with good response to medications, how to advocate for clients' access to the newest and best medications, and tips for consultation with prescribing docs.

Because it is not a blind endorsement of allopathic pharmaceutical treatment, this book will no doubt ruffle some feathers. However, since the authors are clearly NOT in the anti-meds camp, their thought-provoking little book is not easily dismissed. Highly recommended!

A Cowman's Wife is a fasinating account of one woman's adventure in south-western Arizona. Mary Kidder Rak captured this chapter of her life in very personal and humurous terms as well as giving us a glimpse into ranch life in the early 1900's. If you're looking for a book that gives you an up close and personal view of the life of an adventurous woman or of life in the American SW., this is a must read! PS: Check your maps for the ranch Mary and her husband lived on, it's still a landmark!

This very short book explains in detail how to hold a large-scale (town, mall, park) scavenger hunt. There really isn't much here that is new or different. If you need visual organizers and lots of hand-holding to put a scavenger hunt together, this book will be a favorite, but if you're looking for creative ways to put a new twist on a old game, this won't do it. Pretty pricey for the 25+ pages. Try this book instead:Treasure and Scavenger Hunts: How to Plan, Create, and Give Them! But beneath Hagia's ancient bargain with the A'Rak lay the direst danger. That mercenary kingdom had mortgaged its soul in its pact with the giant arachnoid. When the note fell due, death of the most hideous kind awaited the multitudes of that affluent and bustling nation.

As Hagia's debt falls due, two foreigners arrive in Big Quay, her capital: Lagademe and her team, foremost among the world's Nuncios -- deliverers of anything to anywhere -- and Nifft the Lean, thief and rogue extraordinaire.

Nifft and Lagademe, strangers to one another at the outset, will soon be struggling side by side for their lives -- and a nation's survival -- against the most hideous foe in the annals of Sword and Sorcery fiction.

I give this only 3 stars because I became annoyed at the alternating narrator device employed by Shea. For reasons only he knows, he wanted to present the story from a different perspective, so probably 40 percent of the book is from the perspective of Nifft's counterpart. The bad thing is that the female counterpart is honorable and adheres to a strict honor code. We Nifft fans want the old Nifft tales where rules were meant to be broken.

There is a lot of backstory in this book, and the plot contrivance is basic (i.e. chase from one goal to the next).

But there are some moments of great description, style, humor and action that is very "Nifft-like" that should please readers of the incomparable "Incompleat Nifft". Chances are, all of you have read that first collection. If not, drop what you are doing, and read it now. Its a rare 10 carat diamond in a sea of costume junk.

5 out of 5 stars The Indefatigible Nifft Rides Again.......2000-11-24

I have loved Shea's stories about Nifft the Lean since NIFFT THE LEAN, his first Nifft collection, came out in 1982. (I'd love to see what, say, George Lucas or Spielberg could do with "The Fishing of the Demon-Sea" or "Come, Then, Mortals, We Will Seek Her Soul," maybe starring Will Smith as the intrepid Nifft -- nbody else I can think of has quite the panache, the dash, the daring, the attitude, and the ability to clock somebody a good one before he, she, or it can do him serious damage that would go with Nifft.) _The A'rak_ continues in this same tradition. Not only is it a great adventure story, but it is one of the finest satires on our current political scene of any I've ever read. Long may Nifft wave!

4 out of 5 stars Minor disappointments...but still worth reading........2000-10-27

Having been a Nifft the Lean fan since the first book, I eagerly bought and devoured The Mines of Behemoth. In the final installment in the saga, The A'rak, however, I did not care for the changing between Nifft and Lagademe as narrators. That being said, I did enjoy every page and recommend it to all. A very vivid world, bizarre creatures and one of fantasy's most original heroes await you.

                    Book Description

The book is the most in-depth account of the fossil skull anatomy and evolutionary significance of the 3.6-3.0 million year old early human species Australopithecus afarensis. Knowledge of this species is pivotal to understanding early human evolution, because 1) the sample of fossil remains of A. afarensis is among the most extensive for any early human species, and the majority of remains are of taxonomically inormative skulls and teeth; 2) the wealth of material makes A. afarensis an indispensable point of reference for the interpretation of other fossil discoveries; 3) the species occupies a time period that is the focus of current research to determine when, where, and why the human lineage first diversified into separate contemporaneous lines of descent. Upon publication of this book, this species will be among the most thoroughly documented extinct ancestors of humankind. The main focus of the book - its organizing principle - is the first complete skull of A. afarensis (specimen number A.L. 444-2) at the Hadar site, Ethiopia, the home of the remarkably complete 3.18 million year old skeleton known as "Lucy," found at Hadar by third author D. Johanson in 1974. Lucy and other fossils from Hadar, together with those from the site of Laetoli in Tanzania, were controversially attributed to the then brand new species A. afarensis by Johanson, T. White and Y. Coppens in 1978. However, a complete skull, which would have quickly resolved much of the early debate over the species, proved elusive until second author Y. Rak's discovery of the 444 skull in 1992. The book details the comparative anatomy of the new skull (and the cast of its brain, analyzed by R. Holloway and M. Huan) , as well as of other skull and dental finds recovered during the latest, ongoing field work at Hadar, and analyzes the evolutionary significance of A. afarensis in the context of other critically important discoveries of earliest humans made in recent years. In essence, it summarizes the state of knowledge about one of the central subjects of current paleoanthropological investigation.

                        Book Description

Auto/biography in Canada: Critical Directions widens the field of auto/biography studies with its sophisticated multidisciplinary perspectives on the theory, criticism, and practice of self, community, and representation. Rather than considering autobiography and biography as discrete genres with definable properties, and rather than focusing on critical approaches, the essays explore auto/biography as a discourse about identity and representation in the context of numerous disciplinary shifts. Auto/biography in Canada looks at how life narratives are made in Canada .

Originating from literary studies, history, and social work, the essays in this collection cover topics that range from queer Canadian autobiography, autobiography and autism, and newspaper death notices as biography, to Canadian autobiography and the Holocaust, Grey Owl and authenticity, France Théoret and autofiction, and a new reading of Stolen Life, the collaborative text by Yvonne Johnson and Rudy Wiebe.

Julie Rak's useful “big picture” introduction traces the history of auto/biography studies in Canada. While the contributors chart disciplinary shifts taking place in auto/biography studies, their essays are also part of the ongoing scholarship that is remaking ways to understand Canada.

                            Book Description

The Doukhobors, Russian-speaking immigrants who arrived in Canada beginning in 1899, are known primarily to the Canadian public through the sensationalist images of them as nude protestors, anarchists, and religious fanatics--representations largely propagated by government commissions and the Canadian media. In Negotiated Memory, Julie Rak examines the ways in which autobiographical strategies have been employed by the Doukhobors themselves in order to retell and reclaim their own history.

Drawing from oral interviews, court documents, government reports, prison diaries, and media accounts, Rak demonstrates how the Doukhobors employed both "classic" and alternative forms of autobiography to communicate their views about communal living, vegetarianism, activism, and spiritual life, as well as to pass on traditions to successive generations. More than a historical work, this book brings together recent theories concerning subjectivity, autobiography, and identity, and shows how Doukhobor autobiographical discourse forms a series of ongoing negotiations for identity and collective survival that are sometimes successful and sometimes not.

An innovative study, Negotiated Memory will appeal to those interested in autobiography studies as well as to historians, literary critics, and students and scholars of Canadian cultural studies.

                            5 out of 5 stars A Must Read for a Forgotten War........2006-12-15

After reading "Crossing the Pa-Rak River," I gained a great insight into the life and philosophy of one man's struggle during the Korean War. Through the eyes of author Philip Kim, we are shown a montage of sorrowful and painful events sprinkled with specks of optimism. This is a must read for everyone who wishes to learn about the human struggle through a forgotten war.
