      Book Description

Originally published in English in 1930, Sinners in Summertime takes a satirical look at sex, psychoanalysis, and the arrogance of youth. A group of students spend the summer along the Norwegian coast, determined to be honest about the nature of sex, in order to avoid the self-delusions they feel have plagued previous generations. What follows is a complete undermining of all their "enlightened" values, as they find themselves ensnared by romantic mischief. A novel of manners in an era when standards where about to break down, Sinners exposes the folly of youthful intellectualism, while also demonstrating the connections that bind all generations.

Sigurd Hoel was one of the leading literary and cultural voices of Norway in the first half of the twentieth century.

The daughter of medieval King Valerio is visited by a unicorn and dragon who plead to have the forests of the realm preserved. A lovely book about forest conservation perfect for children ages 3-7. The author and illustrator, Lynne Cherry, is deservedly winner of numerous awards for beautiful books. Recommended.

        Book Description

Valerio the dragon and Allegra the unicorn have always lived happily amid the majestic trees of the Ardet Forest, and in harmony with the animals that call the forest home. But one day Valerio discovers King Orlando cutting down trees to build a shelter. Only the king's young daughter, Arianna, seems sympathetic to the animals who are losing their homes. But can she save them all before it is too late?

        3 out of 5 stars Too preachy.......2005-07-29

Well, I'm giving this book three stars because my daughter likes it. But not five stars, because I don't like to read it. There is too much preaching disguised as dialogue. I believe that a moral should evolve throughout the story in the forms of actions and consequences, not in a moralizing dialogue.

Since I have to read it aloud, I figure I should get a vote too.I felt like I was reading propaganda--and I realize the book has a valid environmental theme, but I wish there had been more of an attempt to integrate the beliefs into the story.

5 out of 5 stars This is a beautiful and thoughtful book........2004-01-14

The illustrations in this book are magnificent.
Each page appears as an illuminated manuscript. The characters (the King and Princess) have 'off-white' complexions--which make them very appealing for some under-represented students.
The story is well written, though a bit predictable and is very meaningful in its strong environmental message.
We used it in school as a model for writing and illustrating stories with a message.

2 out of 5 stars My 7 year old was bored.......2003-11-16

Although the illustrations are lovely and we both love unicorns, the story was just not good. It was also too descriptive in places for the age range listed. The story is about mankind destroying the forests and a lot of dialogue between the unicorn and the little girl. It was really just plain boring.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting story, beautiful illustrations.......2002-06-04

At our library, I gather books for teachers to pick up and check out for use with their lesson plan subjects. I always pull Lynne Cherry's Kapok Tree for teachers who are teaching about rainforests. When I saw "The Dragon and the Unicorn," I knew I had to order it for the teachers and kids. I wasn't disappointed and don't think our library's patrons will be disappointed, either! The illustrations are not only rich and colorful, they're creative in their design and range. The plot moved at a good pace - not sluggish, nor too much detail, nor too much preachy "do this," "don't do that." Kids will like the gentle, but fiercely protective dragon and the wise, magical unicorn who he protects. Kids will also enjoy taking the journey with Arianna into the world in which the dragon, unicorn, and many other animals live, and where they are being threatened by Arianna's father's destruction of the forests. The resolution of the problem of the king's allowing the forest's destruction is satisfying without being too pat or easy.

5 out of 5 stars Great for Kids and People who like our World.......2000-12-28

This book was so beautiful. I love unicorns and dragons, so it was great seeing the two together. i liked this book because of the story it depicted, and that is that we can all be at peace with the world, and those around us. I recommend this book for people of all ages. it is beautifully illustrated and is full of love!

            Book Description

In a place where mystic creatures wander the forests and dragons rule the sky, where magic is common practice and the seasons are ruled by the natural order, the delicate balance of the land would forever be cast into turmoil by an innocent of the wild. With the balance already disrupted by humans, one unicorn would find herself imperiled by forces she could never have imagined. To rescue her heart, Shahly must rescue the stallion she loves from the clutches of the humans. Driven by the love of her stallion, she must enter the world of the humans, known enemies of the unicorns, and put all she is and all she knows at risk to free him. She can't know of the dark forces at work, forces that could be the very undoing of everything she has ever known, forces that could mean the very extinction of her kind, and youth and inexperience conspire against her at every turn, as does her own heart. Before she can realize, she is so entangled with the role she must play to free him that her quest becomes a blur, and at times her very survival depends upon the actions of those around her, some wanting to protect her and others wanting her dead! But treacherous humans and horrific monsters are only part of her problem as another invades her heart, determined to unwittingly take the place of her stallion-and end her simple life as a unicorn forever. To complete her mission, she must battle the unseen forces around her, see through the deceptions, and win a hopeless fight with her own heart. And with only three days and nights to do this, she must rely upon the help of her kind's greatest and deadliest enemy, unaware that he has an agenda of his own.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best books..........2006-09-20

To be honest, I had my doubts about buying a book of patterns without any examples whatsoever. However, I do not regret it, because this is one of the most beautiful and fantastic books on cross stitch I have ever owned. Each pattern consists of 3 or more colors and are clearly charted in color. There are different themes on each chapter (fantasy, oriental, magic etc.). Some of them are quite hard to do, but there are plenty of smaller projects which I am thankful for. I do have to add that a lot of the patterns use quarter stitching, which can get on my nerves after a while. Either way, I think it is a high quality five star book.

            4 out of 5 stars Nice Book.......2005-03-29

This is a nice book. I like Teresa Wentzler designs and decided to get this on a whim. I'm not disappointed. The designs are not too bad. The dragons are beautiful. I'm not thrilled with the mermaids and the nautical themes, but the rest of the book is nice.

            5 out of 5 stars A fantastic book for your cross-stitch library.......2003-01-10

This is a fantastic book for cross-stitch addicts! The book is full of charts for everything from wizards and unicorns to oriental dragons and zodiac motifs.

The charts are divided into 6 main categories: Myth & Magic, Winter Enchantment, Oriental Fantasy, Angelic Messengers, The Mystic Deep and Celestial Heaven. Within these categories there are charts for complex, intricate, time-consuming masterpieces, as well as for smaller motifs. While the complex charts are more suited to an experienced stitcher, many of the motifs are very easily done by the beginner stitcher.

The directions for working the charts are clear and concise. The charts themselves are in color, which some stitchers may not like. However, the designs themselves make-up for whatever lack this may cause. They also give the name of the designers of the charts, which is an added bonus in case you find yourself wishing to do more charts by that designer.

This is one book that I will buy and treasure for a long time to come!

            Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good, but Not for Everyone.......2005-06-08

There is accurate folklore information in this book, but it is mixed with random speculation and humor by the author so things can get a bit confusing. For the bits that were true folklore accounts there is not much indication of the source so it might not be obvious what information on dragons and unicorns can truly be found in other sources. I found it interesting, but if you are looking for specific, clear information on mythological beasts you should probably look elsewhere.

            1 out of 5 stars Don't buy it........2005-04-07

The authors warn the reader that this book is based entirely on theory and quite a bit of it is intended to be humorously untrue. That being said I didn't truly hope to glean anything I hadn't already learned about dragons and unicorns, but still counted on it being an entertaining read. It wasn't.

This is a poorly executed attempt at a joke, and it's extremely poorly written. A school child would have done a much better job writing a report on mythical beasts. Not recommended, especially not for Dragon and Unicorn enthusiasts.

            5 out of 5 stars A Must Have Book.......2004-03-13

This was one of the first dragon and unicorn books that I laid my hands on and its still one of my favorites years later. For those who like to learn about "real" dragons and unicorns that actually have a biological aspect, this is the book. While these species of dragons and unicorns don't have the magesty of the roleplaying dragons or unicorns, they have a nobility all their own. Definitely get this book and check it out.

            1 out of 5 stars Utterly Disappointing.......2003-06-29

This book was awful. It provided false information based on theory without any true research involved. For those wanting to learn about Dragons do NOT buy this book. It makes out dragons to be weak pee-brained animals throwing off the true powerful stature of the draconic kind. As I said for those interested in truly learning about Dragons go find sources elsewhere. I have studied dragons for many years and must say this book has to be one of the worst I read.

            3 out of 5 stars Pretty good.......2003-05-20

I wouldn't really recommend this book. It's great for historical references, but it's the kind of book that you read once, then put aside forever. That's what I did. If you really feel compelled to read it, try to get it out of the library.

The Vulgar Unicorn is the black heart of Sanctuary's corruption. When something bad goes down in Thieves' World, it always seems to start in this rundown dive. In this gripping adventure, what seems like just another murder leads to the unmasking of a terrible conspiracy involving Dyareelan cultists, Nisibisi refugees, and a dangerous plague that could destroy the city. Murder at the Vulgar Unicorn is the perfect starting point for a Thieves' World Campaign. In addition to the adventure proper, the book also provides full details and maps of the most infamous bar in Sanctuary: the Vulgar Unicorn itself.

I loved this book as a child and I still love it now. It's a great magical book for children. Who didn't pretend that they had magical powers? Love it!

5 out of 5 stars My 5-year old LOVES this book.......2006-01-05

Actually, my 5-yr old daughter and my 7-yr old son really enjoy this story. My daughter asked me just this morning if she could get another copy to donate to her school library. I wish it came in hardback cover!

5 out of 5 stars A Good Book for young readers.......2002-09-01

I first read this book when i was about seven and in the "fantasy" stage of life. LOL. it struck me as cute when i first read it.
Star the baby unicorn presents the perfect character for a child to focus on.
on the first page it tell about Star's birth, and then goes on to tell about why the unicorns and the dragons are enimies. after, star is requiered to learn about courage so she can be the final unicorn in a spell to make the dragons friendly(it requires eight unicorns but there are only seven). i recommend the book "the cabbage moth & the shamrock" by Ethel Marbach, in addition to this book.

                Book Description

Medieval castles, armored knights, dragons, and crests are among the scroll saw projects included in this pattern-filled book. The popular segmentation style, which involves applying a pattern to wood, cutting the wood according to the pattern, rounding the edges, painting the pieces, and gluing them back into position on a plywood backing, is introduced and explained in these projects. The effect of the segmentation method is that the finished pieces resemble ceramic tile and stone mosaics created by the ancient Romans. Beginner or intermediate scrollers can simplify or complicate the projects by deleting or adding pattern lines.

5 out of 5 stars Good book and well written.......2006-08-23

I was interested in this book when I came across it at a Bargain bookstore. I read that this guy lived at the time when Darwin was alive. I had to get this book when I looked through this book. I'm a creationist but nothing like this I really heard alot of. Charles Gould is pretty much trying to separate the mythologies with the reality. He does a good job in the book with showing that those myths could be explaining something that "really" existed and that this did "really" happen. I could go in to detail but this book is worth it to read it. It's a good book and is not a waste.
