Unlock the Elusive Code to Happiness
We all want happiness in life, but what exactly is happiness? Is it love, money, respect, health, or something completely different? In Secrets from the Delphi Café, authors Scott Friedman and Bob Rich explore the nature of happiness and the quest to attain it.
But Secrets from the Delphi Café is also the engaging tale of “Socrates” Smith, an ordinary person who is dealing with the everyday challenges of life when he meets a mysterious waitress named Sophie. In the days that follow, Sophie serves up not only good coffee, but also profound wisdom and insight, and leads “Socrates” to discover more about happiness, himself, and his family than he ever thought possible.

Book Description

Learn how to crack the love code and enjoy an honest, open, and fulfilling relationship with the right partner.

Following outdated "rules" or listening to relationship gurus who encourage flirting, tantalizing, and deceiving a partner won't help you find and keep real love.  So who can you turn to for the answers? Janet O'Neal-"The Love Coach"--has helped thousands of people find that special someone, and in Cracking the Love Code, she provides a step-by-step plan for creating a mutually satisfying, committed relationship.  Her realistic, up-to-date approach, comprising straightforward advice and eye-opening information, will benefit everyone, whether you want to walk down the aisle or simply stroll on a moonlit beach.

O'Neal knows there are no shortcuts on the road to a successful relationship.  To get there can be fun and exhilarating, as well as difficult and confusing.  To help you on the journey, she offers the "Six Cs," six principles that should be the foundation of a trusting, healthy relationship.  And because love is not a one-way street, O'Neal discusses not only how to find the best partner but how to be a good partner, beginning with:

CONCEIVING: What do you want from a partner? What do you have to offer? Setting short- and long-term goals for a relationship, whether or not you're already involved.
CONTENTMENT: The top seven needs of men and women; how to have yours satisfied; how to meet your partner's.
CONNECTING: Turn-ons and turn-offs on dates; spotting "critical flaws" in potential partners; practicing connection skills.
CHEMISTRY: The ten biggest sexual turn-ons and turn-offs for women and men; questions to address before physical intimacy; how to achieve and maintain a satisfying sex life.
CONVICTION: Knowing when and if a person is right for you and what to do if you're not sure.  Plus: Take the compatibility test and see how you score!
COMMITMENT: Resolving commitment fears; are you prepared to commit? Take the questionnaire and find out.

Complete with numerous exercises and quizzes to help you make the right choices at every stage, Cracking the Love Code will enlighten anyone ready for real love--it's a hopeful yet practical guide to creating the relationship of your dreams.

5 out of 5 stars Works Like Magic.......2007-01-31

I had this book last 1998. Within a year, I got married. I recommended this to my single friends and believe it or not, they also got married within a year after having this book. There is something in this book that makes you become attractive from within yourself. It sounds incredible but it's true.

4 out of 5 stars What I want is Normal after all?.......2001-03-27

This book provides the comfort of knowing what other men want in women and what other women want in men. It might help single people searching for someone who is ready, willing and able to love in return. For married men, it reveals why your wife is so disappointed and frustrated, and offers hope at satisfying the needs she can't and won't express. Best of all it could help men and women express and explain their unmet needs, so that lovers have a better chance to meet those needs.

5 out of 5 stars Remarkable insights into relationships.......1999-04-28

Janet shows remarkable insights into girls' and guys' turn ons and turn offs and solid, realistic views and advice on how to find and keep your soul mate -- I'm ordering eight more copies for friends.

5 out of 5 stars Real answers for real questions.......1997-01-22

Most (if not all) of the current crop of "relationship" books rely upon catchy techniques which are thinly veiled lessons in manipulation and deceipt...not exactly what you would want to base a long-term relationship on. "Cracking The Love Code" is a realistic, common-sense guide to honestly understanding, communicating, and getting what we all really want and need. Not just for lonely singles, this wonderful book is sure to enrich any relationship, whether it has been going on for two days or two decades. If I'd had this book twenty years ago, I might have never gone through my divorce. As it is, it has sweetened the life I share with the woman I love, and left both of us infinitely happier. Three cheers for Janet O'Neal!

5 out of 5 stars Should be in every household!.......2006-03-04

This type of book needs to be in every household throughout the world not just the country!

5 out of 5 stars Much Needed .......2005-01-28

Mark Bryan is my husband's cousin. I saw him on Oprah talking about his book and had to get it. However, it was out of stock. Mark sent me an autographed copy and I read it in a day. It was so helpful to me to learn to deal with some members of my own family, but more importantly with my husband's family. Now that I have the truth on where my husband "comes from", it is easier for me to understand how and why he thinks the way he does...that also goes for the rest of his immediate family. I am going to have my husband read this to help him work out his problems with his parents.

It was very touching and loving to hear about the extended family that I have not ever met. Jim and Mark's grandmother, Minnie, was an exceptional woman, and I can relate to her in many ways. I admire Mark for all he has done and for all he has accomplished.

He has been so supportive of us, but this book has really "tied the loose ends up" for me. The exercises at the end of each chapter are really thought provoking. I began to remember memories that I would have thought that I had forgotten forever. It is nice to know that they are there, and now I can incorporate them in with the "bad" so that the "bad" isn't that horrible. I feel that I have grown and matured, and am ready to Re-Frame and Remake my life. He is right...you can go home again.

5 out of 5 stars Family dynamics and how to deal with them........2004-05-11

This is a great read for anyone having a family or coming to terms with family problems. Bryan came from a disfunctional family and spent a decade of his life blaming his family for the letdowns in his life. Once he saw his family was not the problem and he was, he came to terms with his family and decided to become a member of the family again. This book mainly focused on the interaction between children and their parents, but it can be used with other relationships. This is a great read for any of us who have problems with their family, because it councils us in how to behave in the proper manner. As Bryan himself also states, he even has to work on how to see his family in the proper light. This gives great insight into family dynamics, and is useful reading for anyone.
I plan on using some of Mark's principles with my family. Family matters, and as Mark show, some of us have some pretty heavy baggage. Losing the baggage is a first step in coming to terms with your family. Good read and great advice.

5 out of 5 stars Shift from being Right to being Loved and Happy Now.......2004-02-18

Re-enter your family and find your own true loving nature with Codes of Love by Mark Bryan. Mark uses his own family life and the diverse lives of many clients and friends to help you change your personal family recipes from leftovers to exciting new meals that are deeply nurturing, satisfying and actually possible to enjoy.
Mark's carfully prepared program merges passion with persistence in order for you to digest your past and emerge in the present with new compassion for yourself and the other members of your family.
I personally used Codes of Love to graft into my being Mark's substantial experience in mending families. With Mark's vision by my side, I was able to find the courage, humor and new ways of viewing my past in order to enjoy and reconnect with my precious parents. I had been completely separate from my father (I thought) and almost totally separate from my mother for over twenty years. Mark showed me that they were actually never far from my heart or my mind.
During those twenty years Mark Bryan's wisdom paid various visits to my creative awareness through his books and through a one afternoon seminar in San Francisco. In book form, Mark Bryan and Julia Cameron came into my life first with the amazing Artist's Way and then with the profoundly transformative Artist's Way at Work. In the fall of 2002 my domestic partner came home with Codes of Love for me to use and hopefully help me find a better way to understand and forgive my family and myself.
Mark and his powerful books have brought me back into a full and loving contact with the only parents that I will ever have. Using Mark's words and work to reconnect with my parents has also set me free to engage in my own projects with more confidence, determination and respect for myself.
I sincerely hope that you can also use Codes of Love to further understand your past, free yourself in the present and rejoin your primal pack.
My parents are 80 and 81 and I also have a niece and nephew who are 10 and 13 -- we all needed to come together as an interactive and loving family before it was too late. Mark Bryan and Codes of Love were the ticket that eventually helped us to create the healing, to let go and to make merriment again with each other.
Working with the principles and exercises in Codes of Love gives us the capacity to strengthen our connections with ourselves, our partners, our families and with our worldwide families as well.

5 out of 5 stars Awakening words!.......2000-01-08

I received this book as a gift and it really helped me to see that I was interpretting things my family was saying and doing in a defensive and distorted way. This book has helped to re-examine these things and accept that my family loves me and just wants what is best. I have also tried to stop controlling family members, which has been something I was told and never believed until now. Hats off the the author for writing this insighful book!

Book Description

Her acclaimed story collection, At the Sign of the Naked Waiter, showcased Amy Herrick's gift for language, exuberant humor, and boundless imagination. In her charming debut novel, The Happiness Code, that gift has come to fruition.

"A few days or a few years" into the future, an ordinary Brooklyn family is going about the business of living. Pinky longs for a second child, but her husband, Arthur, broods unceasingly about the sorrows of the planet and feels it needs fewer people on board, not more. They are both seeking happiness in their own way-as are the novel's other indelibly drawn characters, from catastrophe-minded seven-year-old Teddy and Oedipus the family cat to Pinky's abrasive forensic psychologist friend, Fran. It is the discovery of a perfectly happy abandoned baby in their garden, and then his disappearance, that changes all their lives. The Happiness Code is at once a romance, a mystery, and a fairy tale-laced with hard questions about destiny and its new challenger, biotechnology.

4 out of 5 stars Unique.......2006-08-04

I liked this one. It's kinda SF but more of a good yarn. A female scientist wants to have a happy baby since so much misery has touched her life. A willing colleague helps by donating sperm. It gets somewhat complicated when she dies and her baby is found in his backyard. The baby was genetically tampered with while an embryo and has "the happiness gene". Many complications enter this man and his family's lives. Even their cat has exploits that is fun to read. The characters in this novel are interesting and I enjoyed reading about them.

5 out of 5 stars I loved this book.......2005-12-30

This book was so enjoyable to read. This is a book that so easily allowed my mind to create and visualize each character and event, as if watching a movie. Between the covers, I read of so much emotion; pain, anger, happiness, sadness, hope. But what really held my attention were the MAGIC and MIRACLES that the author so perfectly included. I highly recommend this book and look forward to more from this gifted author.

5 out of 5 stars Thought-provoking.......2005-10-28

You've seen the summary and plot-line of the book in other reviews, so I won't rehash. I will tell you, though, what makes this book a five-star read for me is the question that the book poses -- and ultimately answers. Is all-encompassing happiness truly that desirable? I don't want to spoil the plot points that spell out the answer (though it's never shoved down your throat), but I think we all know the answer anyway. Pain and suffering may very well be necessary in order to exist.

This was an easy book to read, but a hard one to forget. I am a speed reader, and rarely remember fine points, or even the titles of some of the books I have read. But this one ... this one sticks in my mind, and comes up at odd times. I challenge you to read "The Happiness Code" and not do the same.

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining read.......2005-08-15

I breezed through this one yesterday, and enjoyed every moment of it. This is not a book that will gather rewards, or one that will become a classic. I do predict that this is one of those books that you will pass around to friends and family, and suggest to someone looking for "just something to read"

Fun characters, interesting sideways sort of perspective, generally good fun.

5 out of 5 stars Another great one by Herrick-FINALLY.......2004-04-23

Over 10 years ago I read At the Sign of the Naked Waiter by Amy Herrick and absolutely LOVED it! (It's still one of my favorites.) I'd check every now and then and see if she'd written another, but always no. Now she's finally come out with another book. I wish it didn't take her so long, but boy is it worth it. A fantastic story, interesting characters, and riveting plot development. And lots of philosophy, specifically on the issue of the importance of happiness. Really gets you thinking. Ms. Herrick does an incredible job of writing about everyday life (granted a little in the future), with just enough whimiscal happenings to remind you that anything is possible.

            Book Description

The incredible follow-up to Steph Swainston's acclaimed first novel, The Year of Our War, No Present Like Time is a superb work of literary fantasy.

God is still on vacation, the Emperor still leads the war against the insects, and his cadre of immortals is still quarreling among themselves. But a new land has been discovered, one that holds the secrets of centuries, and one of their own, now exiled, foments rebellion against the Circle. In the brutal battle that follows, Jant Comet will discover that even immortals can fall. . . .

Wildly inventive, engaging, and witty, Steph Swainston's trilogy is building to be a landmark of modern imagination.

5 out of 5 stars Writing that restores fantasy by breaking it. .......2006-10-06

Something about Steph Swainston's books gives me the urge to make pompous declarations about her talent & compare her to Zelazny in the best possible way. I am really impressed by her writing, and look forward eagerly to her next book.

No Present Like Time is a follow up book to the brilliant debut The Year of Our War. Swainston combines science fiction, surrealism, and fantasy to create a really astonishing and unique style. Her main character is still the unreliable junky, the Comet Jant. Through his role as the Emperor's messenger, the reader is given a view of the various verses universes and characters as the book continues to explore the life of the lucky immortals who keep the emperor on his throne.

My review title is a paraphrase from an essay on the New Weird that was written by Michael Cisco. Steph Swainston is generally considered to be a member of the genre movement. I'm still not sure that New Weird is anything but Slipstream dressed up in a more fantasy-colored coat-- but there you go. Regardless how you categorize it-- Swainston is one of the finest examples of this new style.

Recommended for readers who like intelligent literary fantasy.

            5 out of 5 stars I'm glad there was a second book!.......2006-06-26

I read "The Year of Our War", the first book in this series, and I was fascinated by the imagination of Ms. Swainston. Creating a world with immortals, insects and such a vast history, with parallel but connected universe(s) as well.

I was unaware that there would be a second book. I am glad I found it. I understand book 3 is in the works and look forward to it.

The second book follows the immortals, specifically Jant Comet the Messenger, to new worlds and old parallel ones. The character development, especially of Jant and Lightning, continue to develop in this installment, as Jant battles doubts about himself and his addiction, doubts about the immortals, and physical enemies both human and non. More of Jant and Lightnings pasts are revealed, as are some of the Emperors past. New areas of the physical world are discovered, and new parts of the parallel worlds with new allies and foes are presented as well.

The conclusion leaves open many angles for the third book, including the return of God who created the immortals, more invasions by the insects and other possible parallel world bleed overs.

This is not your average fantasy. It reads well and quickly, opens the readers imagination, and challenges them to keep up with the leaps. I eagerly await more.

In the Fourlands several years have passed since THE YEAR OF OUR WAR, but now a rare challenge to a position in Emperor San's Circle of the immortal Eszai occurs. Shockingly the newcomer defeats Gio Ami, and replaces him as the Swordsman, Serein. Feeling humiliated by his defeat, as only the second immortal to lose the vaunted inner circle position in several centuries, Gio vows to regain his place of prominence and more.

Meanwhile San sends Eszai members Comet Jant Shira, the new Serein, and the Sailor to negotiate with the natives of a newly discovered island, Tris to obtain their agreement to join the Fourlands. The mission fails as the islanders, knowing they were once the fifth land of the Fourlands, want their paradise to remain out of the empire. However, a deadly Insect, who should never have been on board the Stormy Petrel, is released on Tris at about the same time Gio leads an assault on San's castle.

The sequel to THE YEAR OF OUR WAR is a fine fantasy that contains two major well written subplots: the future of Tris and the insurgency led by former Swordsman Gio. There are also several minor threads involving specific relationships between characters, but those weigh down the prime sagas even when Jant uses drugs to visit the intriguing and critical to this tale realm of Shift. Still this is a well written original thriller that fans will enjoy as more people see the "Emperor's New Clothes" while the Insects still cause havoc.

            Book Description

Sam Foster is a fairly typical modern American teenager who just invented a time machine. Sam didn't mean to bring back anything from his first trip to the past, but he returned home to 2005 with more than he bargained for, in the form Meg Clayton, a spirited pioneer girl from Oregon.

5 out of 5 stars No Time Like the Present: Partners in Time Series Book 1.......2005-02-05

For years I have been reading Kristen Sheley's wonderful "Back to the Future" fanfiction stories so when I discovered that she was publishing an original book I knew I had to get myself a copy. I'm happy to report that Sheley's original work is every bit as entertaining and quailty filled as her online fanfiction.

The book tells the story of fifteen-year-old Sam Foster, an average American teenage boy who has just invented his own time machine. At first Sam is thrilled, but then he accidently brings back a stranger from the past with him and learns that time travel is far from being a piece of cake.

The book is 244 pages long and is aimed at young readers, although I think adults could enjoy it, too. I'm 21 and couldn't put it down. If I had one nitpick with the story it would be that the Back to the Future (Sheley is a devoted fan of the movie trilogy and this book is like a homage of sorts) references did feel a bit forced but I didn't really mind them, since I'm a fan of the movies myself. I could see though, that non BTTF enthusiasts might find them tiresome, although saying that there aren't so many references that it takes anything away from the story, which is good. I also noticed a few glaring typo errors that were hard to ignore but I believe that would be the fault of the book's editior/proof reader/whoever rather than Sheley herself...

Overall though, I greatly enjoyed PIT: B1 and look forward to reading the seqeuls. The characters were all realistic and Meg Clayton was especially well written...I had no trouble at all believing that she was a girl from the 1800s, and thought her reactions to the mordern day world were perfect. Another refreshing thing about PIT: B1 is that there isn't any angsty romance drama in the story. The story flows excellently and the few final chapters were especially gripping.

If you haven't read this book, give it a chance. Even if you aren't a fan of the BTTF movies but like a good old fashioned adventure story filled with suspenece and twists then this would make a great read. I highly recommend it.

3 out of 5 stars Sheley knows her time travel.......2004-11-21

This is an entertaining read that ought to please anyone who's enjoyed Sheley's fan fiction. Despite the 9-12 age tag on the book it can comfortably be enjoyed by adults. The two main characters are the boy genius who's a little too full of himself after building his time machine, and the 19th century girl who's naturally upset at being yanked out of her own time involuntarily due to a failed experiment! There's a lot of potential for character conflict here and the author exploits it well. Meg's reactions to the 21st century are believable but rather laboured at times.

Sheley's debt to Back To The Future is obvious. In some respects it serves her well - she navigates the logical minefield of time travel better than many more established authors. Even in the clever time travel twist near the end, she doesn't falter. The movie in-jokes are also fun for hardcore fans. For others, though, the more overt references could easily grate. Was it necessary to give Meg the surname of a character from the movies, and have Sam comment on it, AND have a sequence later on where they go to a screening of the movie? After a certain point it gets tiresome for anyone who doesn't like the trilogy as much as Sheley does (and that includes me, though I like it a lot).

Overall this is a worthy first original effort from a writer whose talent keeps maturing with everything she writes. I will watch her progress with great interest.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best time travel books ever!.......2003-01-13

I just loved this book. I ordered it off the internet and I don't regret it. I am a Back to the Future fan and just enjoyed seeing all of those injokes. I hope she makes another book soon!

5 out of 5 stars A Boy With Time On His Side and a Girl Out Of Time-Literally.......2003-01-13

What happens when a teenage boy invents a time machine and accidentally transports a 15-year-old girl through time from 1850 to his present time in 2005? Author Kristen Sheley provides the answer to this question in her first novel called "No Time Like the Present." The story follows the adventures of Sam Foster and Meg Clayton, whose chance meeting through the use of a time machine, invented by Sam, sets the stage for the first of many time travelling adventures planned by Sheley for her "Partners in Time Series."

Sheley does a wonderful job in the telling of this story of two teens from different time periods who wish for larger-than-life adventures only to find more excitement than they bargained for. Both Sam and Meg narrate the story in alternating chapters, allowing the reader to see both of the characters' perspectives. Sheley is right on the money with Meg's reaction to her sudden appearance in 2005. And the character of Sam, who dreams of becoming a successful scientist, is a bright, enthusiastic, not-so-typical teen that finds himself in a precarious circumstance. Sheley takes time to introduce the characters and their reactions to their plight, and rightly so. This is the first in a series of books for young adults planned by Sheley called the "Partners in Time Series," which will continue the adventures of Sam and Meg as they travel through time.

Sheley will attract many readers to this series, because of the time travel theme. Time travel seems to appeal to all ages and "No Time Like the Present" will tickle the proverbial taste buds of those who enjoy the flavor of a good time travel-related story. Sheley's love of time travel began with her interest in the "Back to the Future" movie trilogy, in which Marty McFly and "Doc" Emmett L. Brown take many adventures through time. Her novel even utilizes various names, phrases, and references from the trilogy, right down to "The Ripple Effect" aspect of time travel -so well known among fans of "Back to the Future." Her novel pays homage to the trilogy through these references.

The novel gets off to somewhat of a slow start - Meg doesn't even leave the vicinity of Sam's house until almost a third of the way into the story. But this is necessary to give Meg time to get used to her immediate surroundings before she and Sam venture out into the vast, complicated world of the 21st century. And Sheley gives the reader plenty to chew on in the meantime. The meat of the story occurs during the last 9 chapters of this 23-chapter novel. But the setup during the first 14 chapters is needed to set the tone, introduce the characters, and build the story to its dual-climactic ending - an ending in which readers will find they won't be disappointed. Readers will ultimately find themselves wanting to know more about Sam and Meg - and Sheley plans on giving it to them.

The "Partners in Time Series" from which Kristen Sheley says she expects to turn out about one novel per year will no doubt yield many exciting time travel adventures by Sam Foster and Meg Clayton. Sheley's love for the art of writing, combined with her love of time travel stories, truly stands out in "No Time Like the Present" and she is sure to delight readers with her brand of storytelling for many years into the future.
