Richard Diebenkorn is an expanded edition of Gerald Nordland's authoritative study of the painter, first published in 1987 and now reissued by Rizzoli, a leading publisher of fine-art books. Diebenkorn, who died in 1993, long ago entered the pantheon of great modernist artists. He was an early abstract expressionist, then went through a less successful stage of figural painting. Abruptly changing direction in the late 1960s, he rediscovered abstraction in an extraordinary series of grandly conceived paintings titled "Ocean Park," produced over a span of nearly 20 years. With strong vertical and diagonal constructions serving as structure for large areas of fresh, lyrical color, the elegant juxtapositions and satisfying geometry of "Ocean Park" make it his masterpiece; almost half this oversize book is devoted to the series. Nordland's descriptions and analyses of the paintings, based on 40 years' study of Diebenkorn's life and work, guide the reader to a deeper understanding of the painter's intentions and achievements. The text is clear, straightforward, and largely convincing, though there is surprisingly little comparative material by other artists. Graceful, understated design that complements the paintings, and extremely sensitive color reproduction, make the book itself aesthetically satisfying and a pleasure to look at. This new edition of Richard Diebenkorn maintains the book's status as the definitive study of one of America's most influential 20th-century artists. --John Stevenson

Book Description

Richard Diebenkorn, who died in 1993, is generally acknowledged as one of the most influential American artists of the twentieth century. The luminous abstractions of his later career and the innovative figurative works of his middle years firmly established him as a master in the high tradition of modernism.

This revised and expanded edition of the first comprehensive monograph on the artist presents a rich selection of the artist's oeuvre. Until the mid-1950s, he painted in the abstract expressionist tradition (synthesizing, as he has since, such disparate influences as de Kooning, Gorky, Hopper, and Cézanne) before turning (unfashionably) to figurative painting along with artists David Park and Elmer Bischoff. He then embarked on the series of large abstract paintings for which he is best known--each titled Ocean Park after the beachside community where he worked. Reminiscent of Matisse in color and Mondrian in geometry, these are some of the most remarkable accomplishments of twentieth-century art. The updated section of this edition follows Diebenkorn's career from the mid-1980s until his death, focusing particularly on his adventurous late works on paper. In each "phase" of his career, Diebenkorn explored the intricate interplay between formal rigor and luminous, sensual color with the same masterful hand.

Along with several hundred reproductions of the artist's work, critic Gerald Nordland provides a thoughtful and informative study of Diebenkorn's life and career, an updated, comprehensive exhibition history, and a selected bibliography.

5 out of 5 stars An exemplary art book.......2007-04-10

One of the best art books I have read so far. The reproductions do justice to this master of color, virtually unknown outside the U.S.and, as a French reader, thanks to this book, I discovered one of the most impressive achievements in recent modern art: the Ocean Park series which Diebenkorn painted in the late 60's and early 70's. The other aspects of his oeuvre are, in my opinion, not as imposing, but to understand an artist, it is necessary to have a global vision of his output, and this is what this book manages to give.

5 out of 5 stars Richard Diebenkorn.......2007-01-31

I give it a 5 star because the content was exactly what I was looking for. To own a book by the author is difficult to find. The text is very informing and the photo's are true to color. I am always interested in abstract art, and I found it very informing.

5 out of 5 stars A painter all to discover.......2006-11-05

Excellent monography about a painter all to discover; all the periods and technics are overviewed in a very pleasant language; a lot of place for reproduction of works of Diebenkorn and reproduction work is very meticulos. So, probably the best book about the work and life of Richard Diebenkorn

5 out of 5 stars THIS IS THE ULTIMATE DIEBENKORN BOOK.......2005-03-03

For anybody that likes the work of Richard Diebenkorn, this is a must have. The reproductions and text are top quality. I have many of books on Diebenkorn and this one is by far the most complete and professional. It lays out all the development and changes in his work including many reproductions of drawings and studies that most of his books do not include. A must have for any young painter or collector.

_____________________________________________________________________________

Richard Diebenkorn is quickly gaining stature as one of world's great painters of the 20th century. This excellent book by Gerald Nordland contains an informative, though limited, biography on the life and career of the artist. Included are many exceptional reproductions of his consistently high quality work.

A wonderfullly versatile painter, Diebenkorn was a bit of a maverick in that he refused to allow himself to be limited by the type of work he pursued, being equally at home with figurative, landscape and abstract work. He refused to allow himself to fall into a mold and held to the belief that the work of an artist should be difficult and full of problems needing solution. This he did throughout his long and productive career, concentrating on different goals at various times.

Being somewhat isolated due to his west coast location, he managed to maintain a sense of freshness unique to himself and his lesser regional colleagues. This enabled him to avoid elitist and other constrictive restraints existing for those in the east. For example, Diebenkorn's abstract work - which reached a pinnacle in his Ocean Park Series - can be classified as Abstract Expressionism, but he really never was part of the crowd which included Pollock, Newman, Rothko, Still, De Kooning, Kline, et al. As a matter of fact, there is evidence supporting the claim that Diebenkorn conciously shunned this prospect. Several times in his career he was presented with opportunities to migrate to the east coast, but he always declined.

The greatly-sensitive, emotional and colorist proclivities which his paintings possess speak to his great love and affinity for the works of Van Gogh, Kandinsky, Matisse and other expressionist painters. This is where his study and great love of art drew from. So in some ways, his counterparts in the eastern U.S. and he arrived at similar ends, but by quite different means.

There is another good book out on Richard Diebenkorn entitled THE ART OF RICHARD DIEBENKORN by Jane Livingston which I recommend along with this one. Livingston's book is slightly superior in its narrative content, but this book, Nordland's, is superior by way of quantity and quality of reproductions of the artist's work (just my opinion). Both are 5 star books.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars New Mexico Masterpieces.......2007-08-24

This excellent collection represents the works produced by Richard Diebenkorn during his tenure at the University of New Mexico from 1950-52, comprising some of his most exciting abstract images. The companion exhibit at the Harwood Museum in Taos, New Mexico once again confirms Diebenkorn's stature as one of the most influential and important abstract painters of our time.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent look at period less covered.......2007-06-05

This compilation of text, 83 large scale plates and 21 additional reproductions provides an excellent look at a key period in the development of Richard Diebenkorn which is brushed by more quickly (and in each case with only a dozen reproductions) in the two major monographs on the artist by Nordland and Livingston. There are three essays, one quite brief, that could be read in less than 30 minutes were it not for the constant urge to study the large, full page color plate of the works discussed in each paragraph. Helpfully, one of the writers even includes small, supplemental reproductions of each piece adjacent to the paragraph in which the piece is discussed (in addition to the 104 other color illustrations listed above).

If you admire Diebenkorn's work, you are understandably going to focus on his figurative or his Ocean Park periods. But as auction prices demonstrate ($6 million for a 1955 Berkeley abstract piece in Nov., 2006), his earlier work at Albuquerque, Urbana and Berkeley are now being recognized as not only crucial stages of his growth but also as meaningful abstract expressionist works in their own right, influenced not just by personal interaction with Still, Rothko and Hassel Smith at the San Francisco Art Institute (then the CSFA) but also by shows of work by Gorky, de Kooning and others he was able to visit before or during his years at Albuquerque.

The book is large scale and the reproductions are of unusually high quality. After Nordland and Livingston, this is a "must have", along with the Elderfield's paperback of his drawings for his MOMA show.

On the process of painting, American painter Richard Diebenkorn once wrote, "I want painting to be difficult to do. The more obstacles, obstructions, problems ... the better." In part, he meant that the freest artistic expression was often the result of some sort of restraint. Much like Shakespeare writing within the rigorous poetic form of the sonnet, Diebenkorn found his format in the vertical, rectangular, human-size canvases that he used to paint his famed Ocean Park series, which occupied a large portion of his magnificent career and included many figurative works. This sequence consists of more than 100 paintings created primarily over the course of the 1970s. There is a tranquil, mystical quality to his works: geometric lines define fields of color evoking the tones, landscape, atmosphere, and quality of light in Ocean Park. His paintings thus hover on the boundary between abstraction and landscape.

This paperback exhibition catalog of the retrospective at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City contains a beautifully produced plate section, arranged chronologically, that spans nearly the entire second half of the 20th century. A special highlight are Diebenkorn's notes to himself on beginning a painting.

Book Description

Recognized as a major figure in postwar American painting, Richard Diebenkorn (1922-1993) was an artist strongly identified with California but whose work is beloved throughout the United States and the rest of the world. This catalog is the most comprehensive volume on the artist now available.
Jane Livingston's extensively researched biographical essay covers Diebenkorn's entire career and concentrates on the artist's inner life and purposes as revealed in his paintings. Ruth Fine deals primarily with the figurative aspect of Diebenkorn's work (1955-67), and John Elderfield concentrates on the Ocean Park period (1967-93). All three authors provide valuable insights based on their personal relationships with the artist and his widow, Phyllis. On both page and canvas, the reader can sense Diebenkorn's complexity and highly self-conscious working methods, as well as his formidable integrity.
The Art of Richard Diebenkorn will give readers with an interest in all phases of modernism new thoughts about the relationship between abstraction and representation. Stunningly illustrated, with 192 full-color reproductions, this book is an exhilarating testament to a distinctive American artist.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent art book.......2007-07-25

This book provides an excellent overview of the arc of Diebenkorn's painting style, from abstract to figurative and then to his final amazing abstracts. This is a good starting point for understanding Diebenkorn's art, with large beautiful color prints of his paintings. And, because it's a paperback edition, it's pretty affordable for an oversized, color fine arts book.

5 out of 5 stars fantastic source .......2007-07-03

Great reference on Diebenkorn with lots of color plates and in-depth text on the process of his work. It was recommended by my professor and I keep it by my easel!

If you love the Bay Are Figurative movement as much as I do, this book is the definitive volume.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for a fan of Diebenkorn.......2007-01-18

This is a great collection of Diebenkorn's work through the years. Though it's a paperback, the book is big, sturdy, and will last a long time. The color plates are very true to his original works.

5 out of 5 stars Modern Master.......2005-04-03

Richard Diebenkorn has finally achieved the status of Modern Master, but his success was only secured later in his life and after his death. Although he was at first an Abstract Expressionist artist who painted as convincingly as Still, Rothko, Kline and Motherwell, he was too much identified with the Bay Area, and therefore he did not have the imprimatur of the New York critics. Then, in the 1950s, he was viewed as having betrayed the New York Abstract Expressionists, when he turned to figurative painting with David Park and Elmer Bischoff. Eventually, until his death, he returned to abstraction with his much-acclaimed "Ocean Park" series. And then the critics finally realized what had eluded them for years: That Diebenkorn painted abstract realism, leaning more to one and then the other, all his life.

Jane Livingston does a fine job of portraying the life of Richard Diebenkorn through his stunning paintings, which exemplify fire beneath the calm. Be sure to read the Norland book as well, since his book is still the seminal book on Diebenkorn.

    Book Description

Collected here for the first time are rarely seen and largely unpublished figurative drawings and paintings on paper that represent a period of exploration and innovation for Richard Diebenkorn (1922–1993). Perhaps the most renowned West Coast painter of the twentieth century, Diebenkorn alternated between the figurative and the abstract. These pieces, dating from roughly the mid-1950s to the late 1960s, not only display his facility with the human form but also how his famed Ocean Park paintings were influenced by these explorations. Published in conjunction with the John Berggruen Gallery, this revealing collection features 42 drawings, paintings, and gouaches. Beautifully reproduced on the page, Richard Diebenkorn: Figurative Works on Paper fills a key gap in the literature of this premier American artist.

        5 out of 5 stars Thinking Print-expansive thinking /curating by MOMA's Wye.......2002-01-13

"Thinking Print: books to billboards..." was a groundbreaking late 20th c. exhibition curated by Deborah Wye, a most thorough and original cultural /art historian. Wye is a curator with a fantasitc eye and an obsession for producing exhibitions and catalogs which explore their subject in-depth. In this particular instance, Wye is re-examining definitions and boundaries for the print medium in a manner that had yet to be accomplished. Her passion and scholarship regarding print, as a medium of expression and a medium for dissemination permates the pages. This catalog is a must have for libraries, as well as any serious artist, scholar or collector interested in printmaking from traditional to groundbreaking--from ink and paper to pixels.

            5 out of 5 stars Hidden Excellence.......2007-09-03

When you think of fashion splendor, you seldom think of Cincinnati Ohio. Perhaps that is just as well because it keeps this treasure hidden. The Cincinnati Art Museum is a jewel box of amazing fashions and has been working diligently for decades to collect work which is at once art and delightfully wearable (if only in your mind). This book exhibits the things you want to marvel in front of, but can't. Perfect photos and text capture the feel of the garments to a tee. It is the next best thing to standing in front of a rich display of fabulous creations.

5 out of 5 stars Priceless photo detail plus timely social history.......2006-05-23

This book covers the years of 1877 to 1922. I purchased it originally for assistance in dating old photographs by dress clues. It's a great resource in that regard, and if I were a student of costume I would certainly want a copy of this book. There are color photos and detail shots on almost every other page that show the beauty and workmanship that went into the dressmakers' craft. All this is accompanied by a series of essays on Cincinnati, dressmakers, the social functions of dress and how it changed during this era. Beautiful and readable!
