Quilts of Virginia, 1607-1899: The Birth of America Through the Eye of a Needle
Congratulations to the creators of this book, the Virginia Consortium of Quilters. This is beautifully illustrated and very well written. I very much enjoy reading the history of quilting and learning about the States of America, this book is one of the best that I have read. Virginia is such a rich source of inspiration and the material that these authors have found is just wonderful. Sometimes history books can be a bit dry and technical, this is one that should find a home in every quilters collection.Well done and I look forward to any further works that may be currently a "work in progress".

I have almost every State Documentation book published, and this is one of the best. There are wonderful stories that go with every quilt. The pictures are in gorgeous color. Loved every page.

This book was a joy! It contained many beautiful quilts of the time frame. I loved the quilts, of course, but I really appreciated all the historiacal information that was included as well. Virginia is rich is early American history. Tie that in with quilts and I am hooked! I came back and bought another copy for a gift. Every quilter in Virginia should own this book!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful history of quilts in Virginia.......2007-01-25

This is a beautiful book, very well researched, that presents the quilts of Virginia along with the history surrounding the quiltmakers. Virginia was the home of so many early political and prominent figures in American History. In these pages you will find many familiar figures from Martha Washington to Willa Cather, but not only the famous and their quilts are highlighted. Reading the stories behind these quilts, one experiences a true connection to the times in which the quiltmakers lived. The book documents over 270 quilts made before 1900, all of which are beautifully photographed. The information is presented regionally and includes a partial listing of museums and facilities where the quilts can be seen in person. Of all the books of this kind which document the quilts of our ancestors, this is by far the best I have seen. This is a book to treasure.

Ken Follett is among the best at writing thrillers that hook you and never let you go.

In interviews, he acknowledged that "Eye of the Needle" was his breakthrough novel. It surely deserves all the praise it has received.

In 1940, the The Abwehr, (German Intelligence), has planted their finest agent in Great Britain---code name "The Needle." Using the name Henry Faber, he works as a railway clerk and attempts to be invisible.

Using his bicycle for transportation, he observes all the war preparations and anything that would be helpful for the German bombers.

As the war progresses, Faber continues his adroit undercover work---radioing the info back to The Fatherland.

Meanwhile the Allies are utilizing a disinformation campaign designed to convince the Germans that the European Invasion (D-Day) will take place at Pas de Calais. Ships and tanks that are merely rubber and timber, barracks that were a movie set, etc. were utilized to persuade the enemy that Patton had a huge Army ready to invade.

Double agents that MI5 had turned churned out radio reports furthering the deception.

If the Germans learn of the great ruse, thousands could be lost. The Needle chances upon the phony barracks and tanks and knows this info must be delivered in person to the Fuhrer.

However, he has to eliminate some Allied soldiers who spot him as he leaves the fake army base. Their discovery leads to cat and mouse chase.

His escape via U-Boat 505 off the North Sea coast is hampered by a violent squall grounding all sea and air transportation. Faber is shipwrecked on a remote rock island with four inhabitants. There he must perpetuate his counterfeit persona until the weather clears.

Meanwhile, MI5 is closing in while working on the scant clues Faber leaves in his wake. They too are hampered by the weather.

The novel moves at a measured pace that heightens the suspense with each turn of the page. Faber is great villain whose cunning keeps him a step ahead MI5. The crew from MI5 are dogged in their pursuit and thorough in the procedural methodology. It is a remarkable match up.

Using an economical cast, all the characters are fully fleshed out. You know everyone quite well.

While the last 48 hours before the weather clears are intensely gripping, the entire narrative is mesmerizing and attention grabbing. This is a breathtaking "what if" take on an important slice of history.

Since we all know how WWII turned out, the outcome may never be in doubt...but how MI5 closes the trap is a superb ride.

5 out of 5 stars Sharp, smart, well written!.......2007-08-16

Intriguing and breath-taking as Ken Follett is, a great thriller, with a very charismatic and well outlined woman character, and a realistic spy whose personality unfolds as the plot proceeds. A must read.

I can certainly see why this book is on all lists of the best suspense/thrillers ever written. The pacing is amazing. and the characters are flawed and believable.

Book Description

Among the enduring stereotypes of early American history has been the colonial Goodwife, perpetually spinning, sewing, darning, and quilting, answering all of her family's textile needs. But the Goodwife of popular historical imagination obscures as much as she reveals; the icon appears to explain early American women's labor history while at the same time allowing it to go unexplained. Tensions of class and gender recede, and the largest artisanal trade open to early American women is obscured in the guise of domesticity.

In this book, Marla R. Miller illuminates the significance of women's work in the clothing trades of the early Republic. Drawing on diaries, letters, reminiscences, ledgers, and material culture, she explores the contours of working women's lives in rural New England, offering a nuanced view of their varied ranks and roles—skilled and unskilled, black and white, artisanal and laboring—as producers and consumers, clients and craftswomen, employers and employees. By plumbing hierarchies of power and skill, Miller explains how needlework shaped and reflected the circumstances of real women's lives, at once drawing them together and setting them apart.

The heart of the book brings into focus the entwined experiences of six women who lived in and around Hadley, Massachusetts, a thriving agricultural village nestled in a bend in the Connecticut River about halfway between the Connecticut and Vermont borders. Miller's examination of their distinct yet overlapping worlds reveals the myriad ways that the circumstances of everyday lives positioned women in relationship to one another, enlarging and limiting opportunities and shaping the trajectories of days, years, and lifetimes in ways both large and small. The Needle's Eye reveals not only how these women thought about their work, but how they thought about their world.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars a most welcome addition to the history of America and the history of women.......2007-06-13

At the core of this wonderful work are six rich and evocative portraits of fascinating women from the early history of Massachusetts, each involved in the clothing trades. In her research, Miller has called upon diaries, contemporaneous journalistic accounts and public records, seeming to have left no scrap of historical cloth on the floor. Her careful attention to detail is as remarkable as it is welcome. For all this, the narrative is paced quickly and efficiently, and the result might have been fashioned--miraculously--from a single piece of cloth. Miller's vivid prose brings to life us an important and much-overlooked chapter in American history.

Book Description

George Mackay Brown was one of Scotland's greatest 20th century writers, but in person a bundle of paradoxes. He had a wide international reputation, but hardly left his native Orkney. A prolific poet, he was also an accomplished novelist and a master of the short story. When he died on 13th April 1996, he left behind an autobiography as deft as it is ultimately uninformative.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Orkney's Finest Weaver of Tales and Poetry.......2007-09-11

This is a highly readable biography of the extraordinary writer that was George Mackay Brown. He lived most of his life in Orkney, but his novels, short stories and poetry have the complexity, language, imagination and spirituality of a much-travelled man. GMB did not have an easy life and remained puzzled by (and uncomfortable with) his celebrity. He did not enjoy good health for much of his life; he lived simply and was a modest man but not one of those tortured souls grinding out poetry in guilt-ridden angst. He was more complex than he appeared, with a spiritual, almost holy, feel for the past that he was able to share through the prism of Orkney. I learned much from this biography, which dips into a range of sources, both personal and published. It is wonderful to see where some of GMB's inspiration came from. He was certainly one of Britain's greatest poets (and that's saying something). His writings are well worth exploring - they really are a joy. This well-written biography is a good introduction to the man, but you are likely only to find the real GMB through his writing, and that is a journey well worth making. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars George Mackay Brown: The Life by Maggie Fergusson.......2006-05-15

`George Mackay Brown: The Life' is compelling from the first word. It is a vivid, intelligent account of a complex man, beautifully written with a kind of passionate restraint and breathtaking honesty. The research is meticulous and the result full of integrity and insight - a remarkable achievement. Rooted in his island home, George Mackay Brown is often simplified, or pigeon-holed as some kind of backwater bard, or mystic sage. This book reveals the man's complexities: his self-critical toughness, his difficulties with relationships, his place both inside and outside the community in the islands he loved, his gifts as a sharp observer with a poetic intellect that shaped and honed his material into poetry and prose of a rare, distilled beauty.
Writing as someone who knew the writer in his later years, I heartily recommend the book to anyone who has any interest in the man or his work at any level. It is a work of art in itself and biography at its best: accessible, multi-layered and perceptive; in turn both searing and uplifting.

5 out of 5 stars A very highly recommended picturebook for young readers.......2001-05-30

The Eye Of The Needle is a retelling of a Yupik tale from the Alaskan northwest, with Teri Sloat engagingly recounting and colorfully illustrating the story of Little Amik, a boy who lived with his grandmother in a tiny sod hut on the shores of the Northern Pacific. In this Native American fairytale, Amik swallows an enormous quantity of sea life (including a whale) along with the ocean waters until he is to large to enter his grandmother's house. Grandmother releases the magic in her sewing needle and all that Amik swallowed comes flowing and tumbling out as he finally learns the importance of sharing. A very highly recommended picturebook for young readers ages 4 and up.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, if Westernized, telling of a Yup'ik folk tale........1999-09-26

This book has delightful and accurate illustrations of thearea. It is an exceptional outline or guideline for a storyteller, and helps students see another culture. The ending can be changed, or explained to children that the author decided to give Amik another chance. The book is a very good introduction to arctic and sub-arctic culture and traditional ways. Every group of students I have read this story to has absolutely enjoyed the story and helped with the swallowing sound effects.

Simon Camish, an embittered, diffident lawyer in a loveless marriage, would not have particularly noticed Rose Vassiliou had he not been asked to drive her home one night after a dinner party. Yet at one time she had been notorious-her name constantly in the news.
Now, separated from her Greek husband, she lives alone with her three children. Despite all the efforts and sneers of her friends, she refuses to move from her slum house in a decaying neighborhood to which she has become attached. Gradually, Simon becomes aware that Rose is a woman of remarkable integrity and courage. He is drawn into her affairs when her husband takes legal action to reopen the question of custody of the children-a scheme for getting his wife back. And, while the precise nature of their ties eludes him, Simon comes to realize that Rose and her Greek ex-husband are forever and inextricably bound to each other.

3 out of 5 stars Not Compelling Enough For Drabble .......2006-09-23

First of all this is my second Drabble book. I read "The Seven Sisters" and was delighted. Drabble has the bitter tone down cold. Simply put, I like how she captures the emotion of "heartlessness." But in "The needles eye" i've been having a hard time not getting distracted. It's not as followable. It reads like an old novel, like something people might have liked to read one hundred years ago. I keep forgetting who is the central character- rose or simon- and what's going on- and why I care about the Rose's legal problems. And why does Simon seem to be enamored of rose, and is there going to be an illicit sex scene here or not? And if Simon is just realizing that Rose and her ex-husband are meant for one another, what is the point? Who is Emily? I'm disappointed that it's not compelling enough. I want more exploration of Simon.... He is too invisible and yet he is the only thing that holds my interest .

I must say that this is one of the best books that i have read in a very long time!! Irene Radford draws you into the story,so it is like you are living the story yourself.I would and have recommended this book to everyone. And I have gave this book to family and friends for birthdays and christmas. I just finished reading "Guardian of the Trust" and "Guardian of the Balance" in record time...and I am a fast reader! I found myself staying up very late because I just could not put these books down. I have read many versions of the Arthur legend and enjoyed Bradford's original perspective. Her characters are very well-developed with just the right amount of detail. Like Marion Zimmer Bradley, her female characters are strong, articulate women who know their mind. While I love the story of King Arthur I sometimes grow tired of the Eve-like portrayal of the female chracters. Usually the reader is left with the thought that if it wasn't for the women....Not so with these novels. I highly recommend their addition to any Arthurophile's library!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic combo of historical fantasy & romance.......2000-03-11

Many believe darkness engulfs England due to the capricious, ironhanded leadership of the monarch. The Barons hate King John, who they blame for the Church Interdict that robs them of the grace of God. Neither John nor the Barons realize that an older force exists. John's half brother Radburn Blakely has the blood of Trylith, Demon of Chaos, running through his veins. Blakely plans to wrest control of England from his sibling and the Barons.

Other powers exist that run counter to Blakely's plan. Resmiranda Griffin descends from Arthur and Merlin, which gives her the power of the former and the magic of the latter. She is the Pendragon and the only living wielder of Excalibur. Blakely knows he must obtain her cooperation or exterminate his only viable opponent. Though he pulls the strings on his puppet John, she has allies such as her lover Robin Locksley. The fate of a nation and perhaps a world depend on the upcoming duel between Blakely and Resmiranda.

Gifted storyteller Irene Radford can hold her own with the giantesses of fantasy writing such as Norton, McCaffrey, and Kurtz. Using King John's Medieval England as a backdrop, Ms. Radford writes a delightful tale that freshens up Robin Hood and King Arthur in one brush. The novel works as the mundane blends with the magical into a novel that deserves an award even as it will provide a large cross- genre audience for Ms. Radford.

4 out of 5 stars Future Care of Your Disabled Child.......2007-03-31

"This book addresses a variety of issues related to planning for a child with a disability, including special needs trusts, guardianships, government benefits programs, and taxes. It focuses on the importance of developing a comprehensive life plan for the child and is written on a level that is fairly easy to understand. Because this book was published in 1995, information gathered from it may need to be updated according to more recent changes in the law."
I deducted one star for the publication date (1995), but the overall info is invaluable for someone facing this situation.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Book on Future Planning.......2005-09-06

I just wanted to share this book with those who may be interested. It is so detailed - I have never seen so much information in one place in my entire life about future planning for a child with a disability. The first section just blew me away - the second and third - same thing. I look forward to finishing the remaining 400 pages of this whopper of a book (which is 642 pages in length). This book has already answered every single question that I've ever had about the future, in regards to my son, who has Autism. I would venture to say that the education that I have received in the first 240 pages makes it worth every single penny - and then some. Everything from the differences in housing options to caregiver options to community living to managing finances to specifying your child's joys so that they may continue after your death (even down to writing a letter of intent which specifies that your child likes to bowl or go to the movies!). Over and over again I've seen the authors stress how important it is to GET INPUT FROM THE PERSON WITH THE DISABILITY and to TELL THE PEOPLE WHO YOU EXPECT TO CARE FOR YOUR CHILD about your decisions, which involve them. Readers are prodded to write a "letter of intent" and to revise it each year so that it's always current and changes with the needs of your child. The book is expensive but if you're looking into this topic, I would highly recommend making this purchase before consulting an attorney or hiring someone blindly. Please note that this is not my "formal" review but is my way of sharing this book NOW instead of waiting until I'm completely finished.

            4 out of 5 stars Spiritual Essence.......1999-12-21

One of the things I enjoyed was how simple the book explained the Spiritual Essence of Angels. Throughout the book as you read, you'll begin comparing and finding similarites between what the author wrote and what you're experiencing. It's also good if you don't have the time to read because it's a small sized book yet it contains so much interesting information.
