Customer Reviews:
Good intro book .......2005-10-18
In the 26 pages (between Foreword and Glossary) there is an awful lot of good explanation on canoe basics, complemented with many and clear drawings. As a novice in canoeing, I learned a lot more than one could expect from such a thin book. Some techniques like re-entering-the-canoe-in-deep-water and boat-over-boat rescue technique seem better explained here than they are in some thicker books. (I write "seem" as I haven't tried yet at the time of writing this :-) ).
It should be noted that this is -as the title says- a basic introduction book; the book has all the information you need to get started. It will enable you to row and control a lot better than the average newbee in a rental canoe, but that is about how far it goes.
Good first manual for novice recreational paddlers.......1999-11-09
The American Canoe Association's Introduction to Paddling, canoeing basics for lakes and rivers, is a short and clear introduction to canoeing. It describes the canoe and related equipment, how to use same, and several cautionary thoughts.
The strokes described are few and clear, and river maneuvers and safety considerations are clearly laid out.
A fine introductory handbook for any novice canoeist, and probably all that is needed for thye casual paddler

Unspoiled Waters of New York.......2000-08-19
An immense compendium of the pristine paddling spots left in New York State. The authors looked for lakes with one goal in mind: find places where the water has not been spoiled by development, pollution, or powerboats. Unquestionably, they succeeded. The book describes over 100 trips across the state, with an expectedly high concentration in the Adirondack Mountains. For each trip, the authors describe launch locations, scenery, notable areas on the lake, and any interesting wildlife seen during their paddle. Many of the lakes are a bit small for a full day trip, but if one only has a few hours to paddle, these are certainly places to go. The authors did a good job of including sites from across the entire state, and tried to include a number of lakes near New York City. Unfortunately, the authors almost ignored flat river paddling, but a few calm rivers and streams did make their way into the book. Overall, if you are a New Yorker who loves getting away from it all, this is one book to have.
Good general review of the NY region.......2000-08-17
For the novice, such as myself, this is a good book to get you started on exploring the canoeing areas of New York. They review the area, the water, and the wildlife. It is not an exhaustive list and many areas we found were seasonal, but that wasn't mentioned in the book. I hope they write another updated and more exhaustive review in the future.
Book Description
The first comprehensive flatwater paddling guide to Utah's lakes, rivers, and reservoirs.
Utah is covered with scenic waterways that offer a diversity of excursions for paddlers of all levels. Pine-lined shores, red-rock cliffs, quiet canyons, and high-altitude lakes make this state a year-round paddler's paradise, and this book a welcome resource for flatwater enthusiasts.
Packed with tips, gear lists, and natural history, this comprehensive handbook is a long-awaited guide to many of Utah's little-known waters and popular destinations. Logistical details help you find exactly the kind of excursion you seek, from easy day trips to challenging expeditions, and provide the information you need to make the most of your paddling experience. 15 maps,30 black and white photographs, index.
Customer Reviews:
Good guide to Utah flatwater paddling.......2007-09-16
I agree with the author when he says that this is the only guide to flatwater in Utah. Even though it is the default choice, it is a well thought out book. It hits the obvious places and a few out of the way places I'd never heard of. Each individual review does a good job of describing the location. The book would have benefited from individual closeup maps for at least the "best bets" destinations.
Also, for the destinations that are reservoirs (most of them) it might have been helpful to have listed the water level required for the paddling that is described. Some of the destinations flat out don't exist in a dry year.
Of course, any travel guidebook is outdated the day it is published and this book is no exception--the kayak rental place on Antelope Island is closed as of September 14, 2007.
While you could eventually discover most of the destinations yourself (there just isn't much water in Utah), this book can will save you a lot of time and miles. Recommended.

Book Description
Wilderness living in the late 1700s is captured and brought to life. Thirty-one paintings show how the rugged voyageurs of the North West Company worked and lived and laughed. This book was originally published in 1994 but has been unavailable for the past several years, until now.
Customer Reviews:
A Visual History.......2001-08-31
This book should be in all school libraries. The excellent illustrations bring the accurate text to life in a compelling way. I give 2-3 hr presentations in French or English as a voyageur. This book certainly covers more than I can in such a way. I would recommend it whole-heartedly as background for anyone interested in the period and the characters.
Great Read with Great Watercolors.......2000-12-03
Every spring in the late 1700's canoes would leave from Quebec and head for upper Lake Superior. At the same time trappers from deep in the central and Rocky Mountain regions of Canada would head for the same location with the fruits of their trapping labors over the winter. They would meet for a couple of weeks of trading and partying. Then they would laboriously paddle back to where they had come from.
Howard Silvertson captures this time with short clear descriptions and beautiful watercolors that really make the history come alive. It is a part of history that is often forgotten. It's fascinating to imagine what it was like to live in those times. This book captures the feeling. This book should be in every school library.

Customer Reviews:
Very useful guide for paddlers.......2006-10-21
As soon as I got a kayak this summer, I bought both this book and the "Take a Paddle" for western New York. This region is a great place to put a little boat in the water--with lakes of all sizes, from little kettleholes to the Great Lakes, plus streams, and rivers, and the Erie canal. It really helps to have a guide to tell you where you can put in and take out, the difficulty of a route, how to get there and where to park.
These books are well designed and easy to use. I've tried out several routes and found the information very useful. Can hardly wait to get out and try more paddles next spring.
Book Description
In 1907 I set out to journey by canoe down the Athabaska and adjoining waters to the sole remaining forest wilds—the far north-west of Canada—and the yet more desert Arctic Plains, where still, it was said, were to be seen the Caribou in their primitive condition.

Outstanding work.......2006-07-02
My wife and I bought this book and our canoe in the same week.
Coincidence? I don't think so. This book overs families a great chance to get outside and share time together.
The rating system is outstanding and the directions are great.
This is the type of book that screams out for a second volumn I would gladly volunteer to be a guest contributor should the authors ever decide to do a second volumn.

Book Description
"[Llywelyn's] subject matter is varied, including vampires, a sentient tree, traditional and untraditional ghosts, murder, disembodied talking heads, an examination of the commercial value of fairies, tales of Arthurian legend with unusual twists, immortality, and a man who really gets into his art . . . most are rewarding and I was particularly impressed by the story of a boy who pretends that a glass egg actually contains the dinosaur, and eventually discovers that pretense has become reality. I believe this collection is original to Wildside, so you won't find it elsewhere, and you really do want to find it." -- Don D'Ammassa, Science Fiction Chronicle
